These are 13 tips that would have been really great to know when I started out in magic. If you're new to magic, I hope you'll find this helpful, and if you're a longtime practitioner, I hope there's something here for you too! Maybe the way I've articulated some idea is a bit different than what you've heard before, or maybe you agree/disagree with some position I've taken...let me know in the comments!

The opening suit production sequence is a slight adaptation of the opening of Darwin Ortiz's routine "12 The Hard Way" published in "Lessons in Card Mastery." The riffle shuffle production at the start of the sequence comes from Steve Freeman. This all-at-once production was inspired by a suit production from Ben Earl on his DVD set "Past Midnight." The idea of producing a full suit of cards likely originated with Ricky Jay. The thirteen "tips" are a combination of discoveries through personal experience alongside ideas I've encountered in the magic literature and through listening to magicians and performers of all kinds. In a short video, the best I can do is to briefly summarize some of these points, but for a deeper understanding, you should go to the original sources: "Strong Magic" and "Designing Miracles" by Darwin Ortiz, the chapter on Magic Theory in "Card College Vol. 2" by Roberto Giobbi, and "The Magic Way" by Juan Tamariz. I first heard phrase "zero is zero" from my mom -- thanks! To learn more about habit formation, read "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. The footage of my performance at the Hollywood Magic Castle was filmed by Dru Morgan and the footage of my performance at the Chicago Magic Lounge was filmed by Jack Brandtman.

As an amateure and no pro, with a finally quite good double, I wanna give some addendums... I'm quite anxious and I use sleight of hand to overcome some personal issues. Therefore I'm "practising" a lot... okay it's not just an excuse for playing around with cards nearly every day... It's not just about the speed, while practising. It's about taking your time. Muscle memory is a funny thing. I once tried to get a move down, I tried to force my fingers to do what I want them to do, but they don't... So, I gave up. Over the following days (or weeks, maybe even month), I forgott about the move. After a while I remembered the move and I tried again... and... surprise... I got it right! So, be disciplined, but don't force it, play with it. And there is a second thing. Even if I don't perform... If you see an effect, a methode or an principle... don't just take and copy it, that won't work. Take it, deconstruct it and make it your own. Find a story that fits your personality and adapt the effect to it.

Great point about taking time off. I’ve had a similar experience coming back to a move after a delay and seeing improvement. And originality is always a good thing to attempt!

This is something I learned, but when you don't have a deck, practice mentally. Go through the steps slowly and apply it when you have a deck. It helped me with a lot of sleight techniques.

cool story bro mode /ON: I do some moves (more like ruin them)/ simple tricks for fun or when I'm bored just for myself, I was super bored at work (yeah at work :D) and started to busy my hands a bit with my deck of cards, first of all from my point of wiew what I'm doing is obvious, I like the "mechanic" involved in moves and practice them but at the end of the day I'm definitely not "gifted", anyway, I was playing with my deck and my colleague came to see me, I ended up doing some basic stuff (basic, very very basic triumph, card sandwiches with some basic fake cuts and controls involved ) and he was clueless, then other mates came (we were bored as hell) and one of them was a kinda heckler, and I don't know why tried to use a move I don't properly do well: I did a sloppy Hermann style pass (yes I'm that bad :D) to control his card and he jumped on me "you did something there, hold on I saw it! you did something!" we were just messing around but I ended up explaining what I did and he had no clue, he might just have seen my fingers doing weird stuff and for him it was it but he was right! because he saw "weird stuff" happening and not "magic"... moral of the story: you need honest feedback, not polite feedback. other moral of the story: when it seems obvious to you, it's not ready to perform, period :D

I think if we start with Tip#9 "Make Practice a Habit" then all other tips can be practiced. Else, no use. I always say I'm getting occupied with office work a lot and unable to take time to practice, though, I know this skill makes me happy, but still!! Daniel, you punched me!!! I will stop reasoning for not practicing!

Well, you have once again proven that my deeming you the "Young Professor" is absolutely earned. In 1950, many a magician would have seeked out Mr. Vernon for such advice. To paraphrase from the classic movie Jeremiah Johnson, "You have done well Pilgrim..."

And I thought you were good enough to take advantage of my tips for you. I’m going to watch more of you first. I used to feel awkward around other magicians I used to feel I wasn’t as good as other magicians. Fact was I was even better but that had nothing to do with it. Do not compare. Nobody can do what you do the way you do it. ITS OUR FLAVOR WE ADD. We do the same things but we each add our Thing to it. A piece of YOU is added to your performance. Early I acted as if I were a magician and did clever tricks people couldn’t figure out. My teacher taught me how to do Real Magic. People witness bonafide actual miracles with no explanation whatsoever I just recorded my stuff for the first time. I see some things to work on. I do have things to give you. Not bc I saw anything to do better but bc you deserve some underground stuff not in print or limited number of copies. I spent 5 years on Hyper Twist and hyper perfected it and just thought of a move to do that’s better than displaying 3 as 1 if I buckle off 2 under spread and show a single. All these years. Just came to me.
