I noticed that too. Mary Jane is much more relaxed and happier in Italy. Maybe that's why former emigrants to the USA and Canada founded native clubs. Sometimes you just miss your or a similar mentality. Of course, sometimes a person wants to step back a bit and visit other cultures and customs. The United States is the best opportunity for that because it is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. Of course, the only real Americans are the original ones who thousands of years ago were the only inhabitants, the Indians. :)
1st thing i noticed when I travelled from US back to Eu: people are not as overweight lol, food/ pastry is so much more delicious and not as much diversity, more of the same people everywhere.
You can just live without AC everywere!. I found several time hotel Rooms occupied by american's with 20°C and sleeping with "Piumone" on the bed with 35°C esternal temp. The earth is one and AC needs a lot of energy, to use Ac and resources in general american's way is the worst thing for earth health! And for the point 13...is not only pay attention to wear, is "buon gusto" and it's because we are surrounded by art, wonderful nature and good style everywere: it's the italian style!
I envy the Italian pace and enjoyment of life, what you call "chill". I would love to visit Italy & experience the wonderful food...and leisurely meals, not rushed. The reason we put month/day/year is because one naturally says "April 5th", not "5 April". Anyway, your episodes are always so charming!
#10 I am from England and have lived in the US for 23 years - I am STILL not used to writing the date the American way! When asked for my birthday I always say the name of the month and then the date rather than give the number for the month, just so I don’t get it all mixed up!

Very good points...it's so true...the pulse in certain places in Europe and Italy is so subdued and laid back compared to NY. Everyone seems so laid back and innocent. I also agree that people in Europe put pride in their fashion. For example, so many women in Italy do not even wear T-Shirts I noticed...unless they are going to the gym.
It's amazing how living in a foreign country changes your perception of your home country (for good and bad). You see things you never noticed before. It's an eye opening experience.
We do the line thing in Norway, too. We just form a jumble around the cash register, and it works because everyone who joins the line knows they're behind the people already there. Norwegians are pretty chill compared to Americans, too. Don't get me wrong, Americans are a good poeple and I love the USA, but yeah, things are definitely more relaxed and informal here.
I'm from Southern California and the first time I saw the Atlantic ocean on the east coast of the US, I was surprised the ocean waves didn't come rolling in the same way they do on the west coast. Though when I flew into Rome Italy, the surrounding plants and beach reminded me of Southern California. That is probably because we have the same "Mediterranean climate."
You must come see it. 😊 Though keep in mind, it's a colder ocean than the Atlantic because it flows down from Alaska, where as the Atlantic is warmed because it flows up from the Gulf of Mexico. (At least here in the United States anyway). 😉
Hi Mary Jane! I still remember my first journey with my mum in England and Ireland. We -my mother in particular- were shocked someone could have beans, sausages and even ketchup for breakfast (I mean: she is still rather young but she's never tasted ketchup and she's never been in a fast food, always refused to).
LOL ... it was same for me coming back from Ireland. * Boarding on plane in Dublin had people perfectly queued while boarding the connecting flight in Bergamo airport had the usual "cluster of people" near the forward and rear entrances XD * Disembarking at Bergamo and being able to find the connecting flight's gate was some kind of adventure, with personnel sending us to left queues, then right queues, then again left queues, checking passports, PCR tests, location forms, ... Welcome back to Italy, I guess!
Having air conditioning everywhere in the US goes along with the fact US has one of the highest cunsumption (waste) of energy per capita, kudos to Italy, sorry guys
With all the art we have in Italy, Italians have developed a strong sense for beauty and they look at you because you are pretty, if you were ugly no one stares at you, sure.:)
Great video, as always. The thing about breakfast in North America is that they mostly eat non-sweet breakfast but North Americans shouldn't be shocked at eating a sweet breakfast because they do eat pancakes with syrup.

For me, the breakfast MUST be something sweet to eat. Yoghurt, fruit, cake, or somethig like that, with a coffee and milk. One time, my mother in law was visiting us( she´s from Ecuador) and she was preparing a breakfast in the kitchen. I smelt something frying at 8 in the morning....and I almost got sick....Con mia moglie siamo andati in Italia per viaggio di nozze e la prima colazione nel caffé di ogni cittá ogni mattina é stata una bella abitudine. ;)

I agree most Americans are “sciatto” or sloppy when it comes to dressing for running errands. I think it has to do with the culture of always being in a rush.
I’m Italian-American. That’s part of it, but generally speaking, 50% of people in America are just lazy/low class. And I say that as a lifelong American. Even when I run errands, I’m in dress pants and a polo shirt. I always look respectful and presentable. Most in America don’t care at all about looking presentable or respectful. Also, many people here are depressed and/or doped-on drugs. This creates carelessness.
I disagree this is the reason. I also disagree with the 'truth teller' reply. I am British/Australian and one thing I notice in Australia is how much more relaxed people are about clothing- I think this is the same in the US. People can dress however they want and they take the liberty. Don't get me wrong, I like dressing smart-casual all the time in the UK (as in most of Europe including Italy) but I miss being able to go to the shops in bare feet and a raggedy old tshirt haha. So I actually think it's the opposite to what you're saying- Americans that are in a rush are normally professionals who do dress nicer- those who dress more casual/sloppy are those that are more relaxed about appearance.
Interesting and fun observations. Definitely some very recognizable ones, haha like the last one. It strikes me most when Americans are traveling especially. As you say more in general not to say all Americans do that of course. As well as AC usage in the US. On another note, looks like you are feeling right at place being back. Lovely to see that. When watching you just seem more at ease and happy.

You are correct Mary Jane, the meals have become smaller and it is not just Italian sized.. i have flown. many times before COVID and on the same airlines they always gave larger meals.. they are all doing it... and no drinks ect... I had to ask for water.... numerous times.

Bel video. A giorni parto anche io per l’Italia e probabilmente farò un post sulle differenze o sul reverse culture shock. Penso che a volte accada un effetto strano legato al tempo. Più vivi all’estero e più ti sembrano normali gli aspetti della vita all’estero. All’inizio noti tutto e ne sei meravigliato, shockato, indignato ma poi tutto diventa normale. Però allo stesso tempo si intensifica il reverse culture shock quando torni in Italia e alcune cose che davi per scontate ti sembrano particolari o in alcuni casi assurde. Ed è molto delicato parlare di questi aspetti perché se non stai attento a come ti esprimi potrebbero dirti: ecco, è arrivato l’americano/a! Noi expats dobbiamo camminare in punta di piedi sia in Italia che all’estero. :)
When I went to New York I thought everyone dressed fancy, not to Italians I guess. Also when I went to Morocco I saw the meeting point of the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean, you could see the different colors in the water.
What I observed in New York is that the higher social class, the better people dress and viceversa. If you've been to rich neighborhoods in New York (which are the touristy ones) you've probably only seen people not only well dressed, but wearing very expensive clothes. It's different in Italy, you don't need to wear expensive clothes to be well dressed and you can easily find very low income people being dressed much more elegantly than wealthy individuals.
You don’t need to be wealthy to enjoy quality of the life in Europe. For some reason in US quality of the life and almost everything depending of the money and income. Like money is the ultimate goal of their life. Not sure why it is like that but respect this perspective as well. In my opinión, money is just achievement and nothing else. For some reason the same ideology you can find only between extremely rich people circles in the US. Overall what is is considering Rich and Fancy in the US, is affordable even for the low income people living European lifestyle. It is all just my opinion and conclusions after life in EU vs USA.
I worked for an airline company and have been Alitalia’s headquarters. Alitalia is not a good airline and went bankrupt. But American Airlines are not very good either. Asian and middle eastern carriers are excellent and serve great meals. Rome and Italy is very beautiful and the people are great.
Fun fact about plane food, no matter your country: Airplane food is always slathered in sauce, because airplane humidity is so low that both food and noses alike dry quickly, affecting taste and sense of smell. Me, I've liked plane food since I was little, because I like sauce. 😉

Ciao Agnese! As a woman I agree it's a bit annoying because it makes you feel like you're considered as a sexual object, but sometimes I wonder if that might be just the filter we look at it with. I try to explain: Maybe not necessarily all men do stare at women as a sexual gesture. After all I myself think that women are in general very beautiful creatures, much more than men, so I can imagine that many men just look at us to look at some beauty, the same way you'd turn your head to look at a beautiful blooming tree or at a work of art. Maybe the fact that we immediately consider it as a sexualized gesture is due to the era we live in, which is highly characterized by the emancipation of women. What do you think?

Ahahah omg I don't know if this is accurate information or a joke, but I never wondered who came up with children's clothing. Up to a few decades ago children used to were the same clothes as adults (shirt and dress trousers, a tie on Sundays). It actually corresponds with American culture being imported that kids started to get dressed in t-shirts and sweat pants and then adults started to do the same...
Another difference is that, in Italy, you look...(even) better! You get tanned and your hair gets a little curly... Odd effects...😊(Yes, I'm italian...). But, given I listen to you as an English teacher, I have a question: why do you pronounce "fo'reigner" instead of " 'foreigner"? Is it a New York pronunciation? Or am I just wrong?

@@francescoprato2351 That's called IPA and it's an international phonetic alphabet. To give you some help in your doubt: when you check the IPA of a word like "foreigner", the stressed syllable is the one that comes right after the ˈ mark. In this case " ˈfɔrənər " has the first syllable stressed.

I definitely prefer European quality over American quantity. Restaurants in america (mostly chains) might have a lot of food but it tastes worse than in Europe

You nicely listed the differences between the US and Italy. Although the Italian example may apply to most of Europe, there are still differences. Eg. You stated that in Italy you often eat sweets for breakfast, which is not the case here in Croatia. We usually eat something salty in the morning. These are most often eggs in some form, sausages, bacon or some pastry with milk. You also said that Italians often drink espresso from their feet, standing in front of table or bar. In our country, people most often drink coffee with milk, which in the coastal parts of Croatia is called "Big machiato". People try to sit as long as possible and talk relaxed over coffee or beer. If they have time these conversations or as the Spaniards say “siesta” can last for hours. As for the queues of people while waiting here in Croatia, people know how to wait in line, one after the other, but they do not like to wait and often verbally protest if they have to wait longer. In the end I can only add how the mentality of Europeans can be divided into two types. The first is the Mediterranean, which encompasses all countries along the coast, from Portugal in the West to Greece and Turkey in the East. Mediterranean people are much more relaxed, but also more temperamental than northerners. People from the north are much more serious and I would say they are much more similar to Americans than southerners from the Mediterranean. Of course, it is not the same everywhere in the USA, and it is certain that people from New Orleans or California are much more similar to Mediterranean people from Europe than, say, people from New York, Boston or Chicago. Of course there are exceptions everywhere, this is generally the case.
As a ‘Northern’ European from the U.K. your comments on the differences between Northern and Southern Europeans is pretty spot on. However that’s one of the main things I like about Italy.. it’s so chilled compared to the U.K. I go and escape my ‘Americanisation’ for a bit… U.K. breakfast is one where it’s about 50% salty (full English of bacon, sausage, eggs etc) and about 50% sweet (cereal, croissants 🥐 etc), we do love bakery goods in the U.K. 😋 but also early morning meat feasts (especially if we’ve been on the beer the night before)
Without thinking too much about it, I agree with all you said. Especially I like your distinction between Mediterranean mentality and Northern European mentality, I think it's very true. I'm between the two but I feel personally I belong more to the second one.

It's interesting to me how Italy is a lot like Brazil - it figures given how many Italians emigrated here. And very good comparisons with the USA... it's really staggering how much their average lifestyle consumes; definitely an outlier in the world.
I would say that the American style of dress is casual, comfortable, and relaxed and not so much sloppy. This style has probably been popularized by the likes of (now deceased) Apple founder Steve Jobs, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg etc. Certainly no slouches, either one. "Business casual" is a definite thing here. The hope I would guess is that comfortable casual workers are happy productive ones.

Many decades ago when I was in Italy in the middle of the summer I was amazed at the lack of air conditioning because to me it seemed totally impractical (It was really hot!) even though I grew up in the southern US without much air conditioning. It was still considered a necessity in commercial situations and most office buildings, if not at home. The thing that always got me was that with public transportation being the norm and people often times crammed into small spaces, the smell of “humans” ( and no aircon) was quite interesting. Schiatto. I think in English that might mean “SHODDY” - Poorly made. Americans had become slobs and I don’t we don’t know how to dress I don’t care and this is part of the culture of the 60s later translating to the culture of gym clothes as acceptable sportswear in public.
Do the Italians stare like the Germans? Many Americans say that Germans stare at strangers on the street. As a German, I don't feel that way. In my opinion, it is actually more of a sign of respect because it is disrespectful to ignore someone. In Germany, especially in rural areas, it is common to look each other in the eye for a short moment when passing. What do you think? Are the Germans staring, are they rude? No it isn't a good trait. Simply look at Germany and England, both can form lines and also lead Europe in productivity. Productive society uses systems that are logical and equitable. Lines show a respect for others and display that you too desire that same respect as you extend.
it's true…….. you're right, we Italians always look at women! but what do you want to do with it, we are so used to beauty that we cannot avoid looking at the perfect creation, you ……… women, with respect and admiration
America values speed, invention, new things, efficiency, money, maximizing profits, and freedom, and yes, we are not relaxed. Fast food, microwaves, drive thrus, Amazon, online banking, etc. People here live to work. Making money is primary. Everything else is secondary.
