@@CielHellsing Lifts practically never fall. Instances where cables break are extremely rare (it's almost impossible for all 3 or 4 cables that are holding it to break at the same time). If the brakes fail, the lift will accelerate upwards and crash into the top of the shaft.

Worked on elevators for a lot of years, and I think you have been fed a lot of stories. Many have died on elevators, but the free falling idea would be very hard to pull off ... they are like a fail safe brake. I did have one clown, that was told by a state safety inspector, that the cables were getting rusty, so he oiled them up. I got called to the site, checked a few things, got on board on the first floor, and the car shot up 4 floors (Free-lifting), The counterweight on the other end of the cables weighs a lot more than an empty elevator, or a car with only one person on it. It got going pretty fast until the counterweight hit the floor, as I hit the top of the shaft, being lifted 2' off the ground. Safety brakes only work on the way down ... not up. For a drive cable to break, and a governor cable to break at the same time (Not even on the same pulleys), that would be almost impossible. If the governor cable is not working, a lot of other things come into play.

I thought that too - that elevators don’t fall. Then my college friend got a tibial plateau fracture when she and her toddler son were in a elevator that fell from the first floor into the basement. They had been on the second floor of an older medical building in New Jersey, stopped at 1 (their intended floor), then the elevator fell….onto a water main in the basement. (She only knew that from the noise and the water eventually seeping in). The buttons did nothing, but she eventually pried the door open and waded put through knee deep water carrying her son. This happened about 12 years ago and not exactly a free fall, or a short one, but still pretty terrifying, especially with the water rapidly rising.

@@Hellya38 If the car is within a few inches on an elevator, the retiring cam pulls, allowing the doors to release, but this is a very short distance (3"-4") The car is then in what you might call a levelling mode. Makes me think of the poor people on the Costa Concordia (I think that was the cruise name) who were in the elevator when it crashed/the blackout happened. I believe they eventually drowned because no one came to look for them as it sank, if it wasn’t for the captain leaving literally no one would’ve died from that crash (yes if he didn’t crash it that would be true too, but things could have been fine afterwards if he had done his job). I seriously can’t imagine what it’s like to have time to process the fact you’re going to die, especially if it’s not going to be a quick or painless death once it begins.

One of the worst elevator accidents I've heard of happened some years ago at an industrial plant in Germany. A worker had been loading a huge freight elevator and was now standing inside it close to the edge. Between the edge and the unprotected shaft wall with the doors there was a 15cm gap. After the doors closed behind the man, and the elevator slowly started ascending, apparently some of his gear or clothing got caught in a nail or protrusion on the wall near the doors, tugging him against the edge and the moving wall. He did not manage to slip out of his gear, and the poor chap was forcibly mangled little by little into the narrow gap. His remains would later have to be scraped off the shaft wall. Today they are using this accident as a warning example at many industries to emphasize safety in hazardous working environments.

I’m traumatized by elevators and here’s why: My grandparents used to live in a small apartment thats only 4 stories high, they lived in the 3rd story, and once I was staying at my grandparents house for 3 days, on the 2nd day the worst thing imaginable happened. I was going to get groceries with my grandma. While me and my grandma were in between the 3rd and 2nd story the elevator stopped, and make some loud noises. After about 5 minutes it slowly continued lowering and than it just went into a free fall. It wasn’t a really high fall, but it was a very scary and painful one. Before we could blink or even say anything we were already on the ground. I broke my ankle that day and my grandma dislocated her knee and shoulder and broke her hip… But we both recovered

A worker died in an elevator accident at one of my old schools. From what I heard there was screaming as he was being crushed and many classrooms full of children heard the last cries of the man. The teachers ran out of their classrooms but couldn’t do much except call 911. Really scary and traumatizing for those kids and teachers

With all the safety devices and safety systems on modern elevators in the United States the chance of a elevator malfunction is still quite slim.

Exactly, lifts are one of the most over-engineered pieces of machinery and are incredibly safe. If the lift has been made by a reputable manufacturer and has been maintained properly, chances of a malfunction are very slim.

Last second jump won’t work! During free fall you’ll experience zero gravity! You’ll need to grab on to something to reach the floor, and by “jumping” you’ll be pushing yourself to the ceiling and effectively only delaying the impact a little bit.

I build elevators and can tell you with 100 percent certainty that elevators are the safest mode of transportation for the general public. It is very dangerous for us who build and maintain them.

I feel like the engineers have already thought about thhe elvator wires and stuff snapping so they probably have got some sort of system that protects you so you dont get 2 hurt

On my first day of a summer job at a Bronx hospital in 1966 I took the elevator to the ward where I would be clerking, and on the way had a brief conversation with the elevator operator. He was my age (16) and it was his first day on his summer job too. As I got off on the fourth floor he said, "See you later" and I said something polite in reply; I don't remember exactly what An hour later he was dead, crushed to a pulp. He had been helping a patient out of the elevator and apparently it slipped and started to move as he was stepping back into it. At least that was most prevalent story making the rounds of the hospital; there were all kinds of speculation and the real story never filtered down to the non-professional workers. It was a terrible shock as you can imagine. I'd never known anyone my age to die before, and even though I scarcely knew him I was still very upset. I haven't thought about him in decades until I watched this video. He was a nice boy. I wish I could remember his name.

Doing a semi-sequel to this with escalators would be neat. Theres an entire documentary about how dangerous they can be.

If you jump at the end you'd miss the air compression of the final feet before hitting the ground; lying down near the side allows the cube geometry to crumple without springing into you and lets you benefit from the compressing air phenomena, while falling debris piles into the middle.

@7:17: That Empire State Building elevator had a buffer, which is a giant shock absorber, at the bottom floor of the shaft. The lady whom was driving that elevator was saved by that buffer along with the accumulating cables. All cable traction elevators have buffers to comply with safety codes.
@Doni094
@Doni094 2 года назад
the thing is that elevators in developed countries have breaking system that lock the elevator in place.. so when the cable rips.. its not too bad, as the breaks immediately kick in and hook the elevator on the leading rails.

I thoroughly enjoyed the humour ridden morbidity of this video. The narrator has the perfect tone of voice for this type of tongue in cheek narrative. I haven’t laughed so hard all week - it’s not the unfortunate deaths that were funny - it’s the narrators exquisite hilarity ridden delivery ‘wot dunnit’ for me. Thank you for cheering me up. More of the same, please! 😅

being slided in half from elevator doors is hard to do. If there’s someone in there, they press the open doors button. If there’s no one in there, you have enough time to react before going into the elevator, besides, you have to press a button. If the elevator goes into a free fall whether you are fully in it or halfway, pray. If you’re only halfway in it, you get decapitated. If you’re fully in the elevator, then maybe you’ll survive? If the floor falls out beneath you then uh.
