This might be the weirdest sounding race I’ve heard in a while. Complete silence right next to the most ear-shattering, offensively loud mosquito I’ve ever heard
The Banshee evolved from the RD350 (air cooled ) but none of the parts are interchangable. However parts from the RZ350LC that was available in the US and RD350LC in the rest of the world are interchangable with the Banshee.
@@petergriffin4629 Yes. Here in India, it only came with the Air Cooled setup. But there were 2 variants, A High Torque and a Low Torque. Both were not exactly the first names when it came to Fuel Economy, but in a country filled with Royal Enfield's, the RD's power and Torque figures are still unmatched even to this day
its not just power to weight, that will only get you so far, but the banchee also had a far smaller frontal area leading to a power to weight and aerodynamic edge
@@benjamindavies1188 Still interesting to see the power to weight ratio, no? It probably has more baring on a shorter race, or at least the start of a race before the speed gets high enough for the aerodynamics to have a meaningful impact.
I love the Plaid races for several reasons: - we've all seen it against some of the best supercars as a benchmark - it is crazy consistent regardless of driver - it allows us to listen to whatever it is racing
Good to see everyone was safe out there! Could only imagine trying to explain this scenario to the doctors at the hospital. Doctor: has the patient had anything to drink or eaten anything in the last 24 hours Crew: 6 cans of NOS energy
40 year old bike engine strapped to some metal “chassis” designed for ultra short distances nearly beat 120k 1000hp electric car, im incredibly inpressed
Sorry, but as a petrol head, car lover and motorcycle guy… I’m still struggling to comprehend how damn quick that Tesla Plaid is!! 😲🔥 Before the race I thought the Banshee had it on power to weight ratio! I have no idea what that Plaid weighs and I pretty much missed his bhp claims.. But jeez that’s fast!! 🏁💨
There's something magic about a well setup 2 stroke that self-supercharges with those expansion pipes. They are just too cool. Love the snap crackle pop sound and high rpm sound because since they fire every stroke instead of every other like a 4 stroke, the same RPM sounds like twice the rpm of a normal 4 stroke. So they sound almost like the glory F1 V10 days at 20k revs.
@@johndc2998 Resonance is the key factor for 2 stroke engines, your exhaust gases expand in the bigger part of the exhaust pipe and get compressed when they reach the end, sind the pipe gets smaller. That way the gases bounce back and build up backpressure inside the exhaust so that fresh air doesn't leak out of the cylinders exhaust port before its combusted. It's technically not supercharging, but that way you could force more air into the cylinder than you could at ambient pressure. So the right resonance sets the stage for a supercharged 2 stroke, although you wont get nearly as high boost pressures as with a 4 stroke.
The banshee had the Tesla beat in power/weight ratio, but the Tesla did not need to switch gears, and had the advantage of having more traction. An excellent matchup to be sure.
521cc of old, old school Yamaha Angry Bees makes noises that really appeal to those of that grew up with ringy-dingy bikes being sold new. The chambers on that exhaust system are artwork.
@@bassmunk They said it's for both. Yes, weight reduction, but he also said with the radiator it actually kept more heat in the system for longer, but with just straight tubing they could dump ice water through it which cooled it down after a run pretty much right away and was good to go for another run near instantly.
THIS is the content I live for. Something completely off the wall versus something that is paving the way for the future. Well done Hoonigan, well done!
Best race ever , couldn't be two more different vehicles in the world and being so close in a race. Congrats to rider of death machine he is really the Legend and such a honest racer . If it wasn't for extra weight of his oversized cojones he would be miles ahead .
Hold up, in that final race the front tires of the banshee were ahead of the Teslas. In drag racing it doesn't go by who's bumper passes the finish line first, its who's tires pass the line first. The Banshee won that one.
*That's literally a motor with a roll cage built around it to help keep it safe...NOTHING FOR THE DRIVER EXCEPT GETTING INTIMATE WITH EARTH AND ASPHALT*
Can anyone else appreciate that something as simple as a light weight two-stroke can keep up with one of the fastest cars in the world. Especially a electric one. Thats impressive!
Man…who’d have think such a mishmash of a head to head would have been straight up the best and most clean head to head I’ve basically seen on here. Hats off to both for keeping it clean with no douchebagary off the line. Awesome machines too.
@Mr Crash I posted the exact thing before reading the comments. 🤦🏼♂️ but I do feel like he was not holding throttle through the finish. He let off at the finish instead. Killer race though.
@@NBSV1 you definitely could be right. It just seems like even his posture changes from leaning forward to sitting upright at the finish instead of past the finish.
I rode a modded Banshee once that was making about 60 horses (no wheelie bar) and that thing was *LETHAL!!* I can't even imagine adding another 70 hp. to that.😱 I would say that's the equivalent to being strapped to Wile E. Coyote's "ACME" rocket! I *KNOW* he would have had the race on the 3rd run if he hadn't had to back out of it a bit to keep it straight. What a freakin' rocket!🚀😮
I hope everyone has the chance to at least once in their life get on a Banshee with aftermarket pipes and and get it in its powerband,! Damn what an engine and sound, even stock with DMC 916 exhaust mine sounds like a 80’s Formula 1 car.
Lots of things beat a Plaid. It runs what it runs and that's pretty much it. Then there are 1000s of drag racers out there going faster to much, much faster than a Plaid even in street legal trim. They just didn't come off an assembly line that fast.
Theoretically speaking, the plaid can go just as fast in reverse if the electronics would let you. THAT would be the ultimate flex. Beat some in reverse.
The 2T engine can do the same, and you can use all the gear in reverse. You just need to put the gear down while you push forward the car/motorbike, the engine will start rotating in the opposite way.
It is built for 500 so it was kind of expected If they went to the 1000ft the thing wouldn't stand a chance But obviously they wanted to keep this race even
@@mjbakedbeans He actually said this was built for 300ft, and he was trying to stretch it for the 500ft here. You notice at the end of each run it sounds like he runs out of gears, and has to back off to not blow the engine. So yea, 1000ft would be impossible for this thing to compete with this setup.
See, I would love to see a full size car with a scaled up motor like the one in the banshee. If you guys have seen Rudezon or whatever that v8 2 stroke car on youtube. Not quite the same power to weight ratio as the banshee in this video but it would be really cool to see one like that.
Third race the Banshee won for me! He let up off the glass before crossing the line. He actually did the same on the second race. But hey, a win is a win, regardless to how it comes out LOL! So props to the plaid! Nice race though!
he didnt say the banshee was running on methanol did he? Now that makes me wonder, are there pipes capable of creating enough increased boost over a stock pipe to take advantage of a methanol 2 stroke?
Wouldn't be fair to such a car, the Speedtail. The Tesla's gimmick is its instant torque and powerband, any ICE engine will have to overcome this when dealing with a EV engine, which is difficult to do but not impossible. However the Speedtail's strength comes from pretty much every other aspect except off the line, its top end, its handling, and it breaking. Basically the Speedtail is a racecar at the end of the day, not a drag.
@@CharoletteJC you forget the speedtail is over 1000hp, 1,300lbs lighter and also has an Electric motor. What's the matter, scared to see a $4M car lose? LOL
Why am I not surprised the Tesla owner would flex about his plane instead of sheer awe and admiration that something like this can even give a Plaid a good race...
You can see that coming into play at the end of the run. But what killed the Banshee was wheel spin, especially off the line. With a chassis that gave better weight transfer, wrinkle walls and TC, the outcome would have been different.
Yep, it should be judged on the front tire, not which car has a front end that sticks out farther, lol. If the Tesla was stripped down without a bumper (like the Banshee is super stripped down) it would have lost there.
#3 was the best launch for both yet i think, fast and completely together i think. These are so very well matched, while being so extremely different, really cool.
I really want to build a drag banshee now!! I had one back when I was in high school in the late 90’s. It had a few bolt on upgrades and was very fast at the time. Wish I had never sold it!
