One of the great joys of knapping: breaking into an unassuming nodule and having that "Ooooohh, this is NICE stuff" moment!! :) Even more fun when you are finding your own rock...of course, finding that perfect looking (on the outside) nodule that took you 30 minutes to chip out of the host rock was actually a chert rind over an ostrich-egg-sized ball of soft ocher (or turns out to be just a freeze-cracked mess o' shards) is equally disappointing...

Yeah, Eddie was one if my first influential knappers too. Mainly because he had a variation of techniques and had gravel videos...stuff I could obtain for free to learn on. Learning what gravel has it's own learning curve but allows the pains of breakage to become lessened by a large margin. I still look for his videos everytime I get on yt. Scooby makes a pretty good costar 😄 The hollow boppers helped with expense as I learned and have had excellent success with them though I use cedar handles and unweighted pieces. I do, however, add a flat washer that's ground to fit in the caps to maintain the shape and my handles are friction fit to help eliminate deformation as well. I use a punch to dimple the base of the caps so they don't come loose from the swiping action when using the side, scraping the edges, or using it for pressure like Eddie does at times.

The sound is a little off in this video, even after processing it through a video editor. I think this happens sometimes when the video runs over an hour in length. Oh well. My current tools: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AeianYkdLec.html

When you started with the "doo doo" thing, it sparked a memory. A country song back in the 1950s and 60s was "Do what you do, do well" and we kids interpreted it as , of course, "Doo doo well", simply because that is what all of us Beavis and Butthead prototypes did. It is still available on RU-vid. You will get a kick out of it.

When it comes to archaeology the dogma in that field shocked me recently. I thought the whole "actively denying real findings or just siding with false findings just to fit a narrative" thing was rare. Oh how wrong I was.

They used to rely mainly on peer pressure and job opportunities. Now they are combining it with moral posturing and censorship.

Jack, if your bopper hurts your knuckle you could drill and tap a hole in it and screw a long bolt in it to make a handle/hammer.

Jum Redfern does that double strike on a flake to drive a larger flake off or to drive through a hinge that the initial strike created. Tried the technique myself with success.

Happy Thanksgiving ! I turned 20lbs or Texas cobble into 20lbs of gravel the stuff was really difficult for me. It was the only time I ordered material and had zero success

Not all Texas chert is the same. If you order the Texas cobbles from eBay then that is bull gravel and can be quite tough raw. The Pedernales ameoba like in this video is pretty high grade rock even with the slight concrete spots.

If you're starting with a potatoe shaped rock, is vhf it considered ok to cut it in half with a diamond blade?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
No. Half a potato-shaped rock is actually harder to knap.
