I can usually get 10 maybe even 16 to 1 with my billet…but that’s only the ratio on my flakes ; ) The thinnest thing Ive gotten so far was a nice leaf shaped blade out of dacite. Spalled off of a big chunk, worked the spall down for a while then switched to indirect. This was my “aha” moment with indirect. I was directing flake travel and cleaning up issues and the blade was getting thinner and thinner. I was down to 9-1 except for one little lump. I put it away for the night and then returned to it the next day only to snap it on my first blow 😂. Learned a lesson there as well. I love this activity

I'm glad that the audio settings were adjustable for you. I knew when I mentioned it that it was consistent and sure looked that way. It's always easier to figure out an issue when there is consistancy....even with the rocks we knap.😉

Just keep practicing is what I needed to hear. Working on bucket 5 forever. Seems like eight is miles away.

When you were talking bout thinning with a billet, uniformity and convexity are key for me to have good results. I don't try it on uneven preforms. Regularizing the edge makes a lot of difference before starting. It reminds me of setting up for a flute as far as surface regularity goes...in the basic principle. It requires running ridges almost exclusively and planning the pattern...not expedient,lol. Indirect shortcuts the heck out of it and I prefer it myself, but i like to practice all aspects that i possibly can. I never imagined that I'd use a bopper to do what i do now back when I started.

I just ordered some 3"-6" Georgetown flint spalls, some copper billets and pressure flaking tools. I only knapped obsidion before just using a small hamerstine and antler tine for pressure flaking. Going to practice making bifaces and hopefully get some n I e points made... .

You said your not that good at direct for thinning, I would have broken it 10 strikes ago.🤣. But I keep trying. Mostly tough stuff though.

Use a smaller bopper so you Don t take those big flakes..less scary. You know that though.

Also want to figure out the inderect percussion. It looks a lot easier to be more precise with your flakes.

I have enjoyed your videos, they have been very helpful with my own knapping journey im almost ready to move from antlers and hammerstoned to aluminum. If you're interested I would love to discuss an avenue to try with your drawings to expand your reach and bring your knowledge of stone tools and knapping techniques to a broader audience. I dont want anything in return as you've already compensated me with your videos

god step fractures are the woooooorst. I'm still very new to the hobby so ive ruined a ton of good gt flint by getting steps when I spall
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
Oh yes. Step fractures are evil.

Wouldn't you be better off rather than grinding your metal tools, gently hammering them smooth? I have a couple of copper pressure flakers and I give them a few taps with a pin hammer to 'iron out' the gnarled up ends and round them off a little. Obviously with copper, it helps to work harden it and maybe it's the same for aluminium
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
It's a good idea but I might be the only person who is constantly plagued by rock fragments in the tool tips. Only grinding gets those out.

What’s a good angle to use while percussion flaking? Or does you’re angles change on different platforms?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
The angles remain the same. Only the grinding is different.

Have you ever boiled any raw rocks and if so did it work?🤔
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
Nope. Boiling doesn't do anything to the rocks anyway. The temperature is too low. You need at least 275° F.

@@KnapperJackCrafty how about frying the rocks in oil🤔(not trying to be a smart a**)
