WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

wow, that "whack your flaker" style is awesome. I don't know how to say that but I've never seen anybody do it that way, super cool.

I call it "supported indirect percussion with a horizontal punch". Or "indirect" for short. 😁

Jack, I'm a drywall finisher. On occasion I've found myself teaching someone else to do it, or at least explaining what I'm doing. It's amazing how many things I'm doing from long experience that have been burned onto my sub conscience, and I'm just doing automatically without thinking them through. In fact, if I'm trying to explain it to others while I'm doing it, it throws me off my game, and I realize its throwing me off my game, making my moves redundant and kind of out of order and no longer fluid. There's all these details about how to do it that you havent thought about, you just do them, and you also know that when you start explaining these details, they probably wont be understood well enough to help someone else do it anyway. It takes enough practice so your own sub conscience can take over and oerform.

It's interesting that you mention drywall finishing. My kids used to watch me do remodeling around the house. One of my daughters observed that the drywall finishing is something she found difficult to do herself, so it's the one thing she gave me credit for. It's the one thing that was "really hard".😁

When you mentioned bottle dumps in the woods it reminded me of being out Racoon hunting with hounds one night and walking up onto a huge pile of brown chlorox bottles. I still remember where they are. I'm gonna go see if they're still there. Free material is always nice.

If anyone is looking to get something like the glass gators used to prevent flakes from going in your shoes, you can cut the sleeves off an old long sleeve shirt and slide them up over your shoes with the wrist cuff holding nicely against your leg! Just thought I'd pass this off since it's been working well for me :)

Back in the day country folks didn’t have trash pickup…. They had to burn it. They separated the bottles so they didn’t have to clean out burn barrels so often.

I had some Obsidian from Dennis Kerns that he called Mexican green, or Mexican motor oil, I can't remember. But it was really dark with green undertones. When you held it up to the light, the edges would be green, very similar to that bottle bottom.

For old bottles watch for coal and coal sinders , people back in the day would toss their glass over the hill with their coal ashes from their coal furnaces.

You have measuring devices on you hand. Measure the sections of the inside of you fingers and find one that the sections are 1" Everyones hands are different so find a finger that works for you. On my hand, tip of the bird finger to base of palm is 7"

I just use broken grinding wheels from harbor freight and abraders you can buy from knapping tool suppliers. www.harborfreight.com/6-in-x-34-in-x-1-in-bench-grinding-wheel-57246.html flintknappingsupplies.com/products/flint-knapping-coarse-abrading-stone-4x2x1-3-pack-20grit

Really nice point. I didn't know they made arrow heads out of glass back in the day. If I heard you right. I'm thinking if you know a little bit about angles and pressure and such it makes it easier to knapp, outside of the practice, practice, practice.🤔
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
Yes, knowing about the angles, abrading, the amount of applied force, etc. does help: unless they are wrong. Then it doesn't help. 😁 (edit) And yes, Native Americans made some arrowheads out of glass, especially out west.
@smokes1973
@smokes1973 Год назад
Not sure how historically accurate it is, but I read somewhere that the natives would steal the glass insulators from telegraph poles to make arrowheads, so the repair men would leave piles of insulators on the ground at the base of poles every so often just so they wouldn't have to repair the wire! Thought it was an interesting story.(if it's true.)
@KnapperJackCrafty
