I quick reminder to those on this side of the pond. (I feel a bit foolish but I certainly clicked back 10s to hear the wire guage and diameter again and thanks Rob for mentioning units there at the end.) He's using SWG which will be a couple higher for the equivalent AWG. Not a concern at this project but don't go crashing a Marian lander or overloading your wiring because you missed the units.

My God, just watching and hearing this bring me back 40 years when I started studying advanced electromagnetism. It's truly a wonder no one has figured out, or cracked how to tap the great voltages that sparks / or are displaced when you open a energized coil circuit. Talk about the potential for true solid state harnessing / generation. I guess I'll have to put on my self generating LED thinking cap, sure is brighter than the bulb. Thanks Rob, here we go again.

Thank You so much for being about the same age as myself!! I sometimes feel like a dinosaur, when I was seeing graphine and batteries, And, all the young people were here, with thier fresh spongy brains and I felt very, very Old! Bless you, I was very briefly in the WRAF, so if you knows your onions then you can probably guess approx age, Lol!! I Was an Apprentice Aircraft Engineer, Hahaha!! Luckily for the brave lads and thier crews, I had to go back home, as my mother needed me..... Yeearrk!! My life would have been so different... There again, probably saved(many!) lives, can you imagine Anyone allowing Me Anywhere Near an Aircraft?! They must have been stuck for enough recruits, with the correct amount of brain cells?! I hope you are well and have a wonderful holiday week ahead! I'm going to be hiding under the stairs, please don't tell anyone, Lol! Once again, I thank you and I hope you and yours will be having a good Christmas and a Happy New Year!! Kindest Regards, Andrea Dingbatt. XxX

A few thoughts: 1. Small neodynium magnets, with appropriate polarity, glued to either outside of the rotor hub might increase the magnetic field. 2. If you're willing to modify the rotor, the fan blades are most efficient when pushing air -- a simpler turbine, like your rose turbine, might increase the speed of rotation. 3. I think those out-runner hubs and stationary could be "stackable", perhaps allowing you to use two modified generators to be combined. Great video, and explanation. Thanks.

Stronger magnets mean more resistance to turning under load. I think it's better to let it rip than risk it stalling nd not turning at all in anything less than a hurricane

I find the output from microwave turntable motors is pretty good, it's probably nothing special about the coil or magnet arrangement, but rather that the enormous gear ratio is causing the magnet to spin so fast, a wind turbine built around this would be interesting especially if you could make the gearing (speed) change proportional to the wind speed.

Interesting TY! 4 thoughts to increase power? 1. Use longer thinner stronger wire like graphene , titanium, irdium, hafnium carbide wire. 2. Was wondering, if a special dialectic used for structure where wire is wrapped might increase magnetic field? Not sure but worth a little research. 3. Strongest magnets you can get to increase magnetic field. Lastly, another RU-vidr was able to break 95 efficiency by positioning the wire and the magnets in such a way as to capture more of the magnetic flux through the wire. 5. Lol Well does not meet Roberts reasonable goal of average Joe and low cost, but high temp super conductivity wire. Still has to be quite low temp but has crazy good magnetic field, no resitance and high efficiencies. Had to through that in. :)

Low voltage and current stuff can be fun, but it’s difficult to optimize for efficiency, as demonstrated here. Meaningful power output vs useful power output are different and people need to understand them better. If the stock fan can’t light an LED, why not add a joule thief to its output? The transistor should send out higher voltage pulses well above what it takes to light the LED, fast enough that we won’t see it flicker. When light isn’t required, the energy could be sent to a storage device for when there is no wind and light is required (or heat or an electrolyzer for fuel or…)

So an idea I've been kicking around since I've recently replaced the alternator on my truck and have a spare to tinker with, aside from modifying or removing the voltage regulator, what would be some drawbacks for using an alternator versus something like a 13 amp AC motor from a vacuum for wind generators?

Would I be better off using fans made for 24 volts than those for 12, or is the wire the same in both and the little circuit board different?
@dougaltolan3017
@dougaltolan3017 2 года назад
A 24 V fan will have thinner wire with more turns than a 12 V fan (probably twice as many turns) . Exactly along the same lines as this vid, but probably only half the way there as this demonstration managed 4 times the turns.
@bknesheim
@bknesheim 2 года назад
Increase in volt is not the same as increase in power. If the ampere goes down, as it will, you end up with the same power. The difference is a higher voltage on a lower fan speed. That often make it easier to use for something.
@ThinkingandTinkering
@ThinkingandTinkering 2 года назад
that has nothing to do with the wiring mate output power is always less than input power - a generator doesn't function as a creator of energy - it is a convertor - amps are really dependant on the load not on the generator per se - but you are spot on on the second part of your comment
@dougaltolan3017
@dougaltolan3017 2 года назад
The current is dependent on load, for the same load, you will increase the current as the voltage increases. Where does the extra power come from? Higher torque at the fan, leading to better efficiency extracting energy from the air flow.

I recently read some guy saying that all the power from wind turbines comes from the edge of the blades so the way to improve the power output is to remove all that heavy stuff in the middle. Yes, really. Not sure if a troll or just an idiot who doesn't get that he does not get it.
@fins59
@fins59 2 года назад
The power output doesn't change. All rewinding the coils has achieved is a lower current at a higher voltage. Now it can light a LED! Well whoopee!
@ThinkingandTinkering
@ThinkingandTinkering 2 года назад
yes - and that makes it easier to use - which is the point
@DoubleBob
@DoubleBob 2 года назад
So what's with the increased Watt output then?
@dougaltolan3017
@dougaltolan3017 2 года назад
Higher voltage = higher current = higher torque = greater efficiency, which is where the extra power comes from.

@dexterdixon2000
@dexterdixon2000 2 года назад
This doesn't "improve the output" it just changes the V/rpm relationship. Its not an increase in output. Yes you get a higher voltage and can run the l.e.d. but it doesn't increase th.availablr power. Your windwall is the perfect opportunity to prove this - take 2 un-rewound fans and wire them in series (after rectifying) - the output would be identical to two rewound ones wired in parallel. No extra power.
@DimitriPappas
@DimitriPappas 2 года назад
It's a higher voltage output, which is an improved output for people who want higher voltages. Really no need to be so pedantic about this, it's really not difficult to figure out what's implied because that can be easily inferred from the demonstration unless there's something wrong with your cognition.
@markflint9089
@markflint9089 2 года назад
Pretty sure Rob said he increased to four times the wire length, so perhaps even with thinner wire the coils are now a bit bigger and there is more copper by weight in the coils, which I would expect to give more power.
@dexterdixon2000

@@DimitriPappas The title says it dramatically increases the output. I don't think it's pedantic to point out that it doesn't increase the output!
