DIY Wind Generator Made From Old Drills & Fan Blades

I made a redneck wind generator out of some junk I had lying around, plus a few bits from the local surplus store. The blades are from a broken ceiling fan, and the generator or alternator is a DC electric drill motor. This is a bit experimental and jury-rigged right now, I'll be examining how it holds up in a future part 2.

Oh my god, that "weird plug you'll probably never use" is used in a bunch of vintage audio equipment and people pay big bucks for them now. They are almost impossible to find..

They were also used on 70s test equipment and are sometimes referred to as HP power cords.

Ha, that sounds about right! Think I found it in the trash at work, so at least it's getting partially used for something instead of going in a landfill!

Blades can be made from large diameter PVC pipe, I have a 5' machine running. I think your right about more windy days lately in the Midwest.

Cool, I have just put up a load of solar panels in my garden, I have them grid tied so it goes straight to the house at 240v (UK) It is amazing to see the sun come out and get over 1kW in November! Let us know how it goes.

Save the chucks from those broken power drills even if the motors are wrecked. You'd be surprised how often they come in handy. I hope the generator works out at Sandland.

Looking good and fun to build, if prop is not well balance won't last a gust. I'm concern about the center bolts attaching the prop.
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 2 года назад
The balance seems pretty good on the blades. It's not so good on my tail boom, and as other people have said I'm probably torquing the 90-degree adapter too much.

Heh, some people get bored with too much build detail! It's always interesting finding a balance. I'm already thinking of ways to do this better. Maybe a more traditional motor with slip ring for power transfer would be better.
@aceadman
@aceadman 2 года назад
@@saveitforparts yeah, I get it. But I watch @mustie1 videos and never skip a second, so I can take the heat of the details. 😊. I’d be interested in building something like this so the more I see that works, and doesn’t, the better. Hope you do more with it. Your channel is really good stuff. Many thanks.

an alternator is NOT better than your brushed DC motor, it is LESS efficient due to it's rotor winding. A 3 phase brushless DC motor & 6 diodes could be most efficient easy setup. Look for the LOWEST KV motor you can find. for your current windmill: you NEED to brace the 90 degree somehow. Those shafts don't like torque and bending loads at the same time; they will fatigue and crack. Try bracing between the PVC post and the fan somehow. An alternator can put out like 1.5kW of power. You would need 8 ft fan blades for something like that lol. for your setup id guess a few hundred watts, depending on how stiff the breeze is?
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 2 года назад
Yeah, the 90 is one of the weak parts I'm concerned about. I think I might go back to a more traditional design next time. I don't necessarily need a LOT of power right now, this would mostly be for topping up small batteries.
@dandil
@dandil 2 года назад
@@saveitforparts right, but what I mention are the upper limits of what is possible if everything is designed right. Reality will be uhhhh... instructive. Any sort of little issue in the system will add up to a whole lot of not much output. blade efficiency, bending shafts, bevel gear losses; by the time it even makes it to the generator there won't be much left. If you then have to spin up the fan blades in the alternator as well, while also putting power into its rotor...well you get it. Even the brushes in the DC motor aren't great. if you use diodes, you need Schottky ones

At sandland on the mono-rail isn’t there an electrical control and regulator still on the master control panel ? Just hook up some batteries and use that system with your generator !

I know they're not airfoils, so it's not as efficient as a real wind generator. It still spins around just fine though!
