14 Band Spectrum Analyzer Part.1 | Tutorial using Arduino & WS2812

This spectrum analyzers is not two 7 band analyzer operating in stereo. This is a true 14 band analyzers, with accurate frequencies beginning from 40Hz to 16KHz.
This project uses the Arduino Mega 2560 because it has a large enough memory and better performance.
Si5351mcu boards are used for programming masterclock IC frequencies (MSGEQ7).
The Si5351mcu library is needed for this programming.
Special thanks to Pavel Milanes for his outstanding work.
The MSGEQ7 IC is very rare because of limited stock and many sellers sell it but cannot work. if you are having trouble getting an msgeq7 ic you can contact our seller. We guarantee the MSGEQ7 IC can work well.

HI I am confused how you can achieve 14 bands when the MSGEQ7 chips are fixed at 7 discrete bands? Looking at your schematic you just have everything wired in parallel with the same signal fed to both chips so wouldn't both MSGEQ7 chips just output the same data or am I missing something here?

(copy from reddit) you can run 3 MSGEQ7 chips at slightly different clock rates. Such as clk1 = f, clk2 = (1.3572 *f), and clk3 = (1.35722 * f). Now you have three 7-band analyzers, but their center frequencies are offset by 1.3572X,So you get a 21-band analyzer with 21 different bandpass filters at 21 different center frequencies.

Im confused, how are they able to get 14 bands at all different freqs from two MSGEQ7 which looks to be set at 7 specific freqs only?!

The frequency set for the MSGEQ7 can be altered based on clock input. Often, you'll see this hard wired with a recommended resistor and capacitor, giving you only 7 specific frequencies. But in this case, they are using a clock generator board and precisely offsetting the frequency set of one chip. This is how they are able to create 14 separate bands.

Your scematics are not correct. The same Signal is on both msgeq7 Chips, so no Stereo... There is also no need for the si5351...

PLATINUM KIT your shown scematics are wrong... If you combine the two audio channels like this, you feed the same Signal to both msgeq7. Look at 1:07 in the right corner... I built it myself over two years ago

This is not from the code. code doesn't have a problem many people have tried it. Maybe this problem from master clock si5351 or try using the original msge07 ic

@@PLATINUMKIT The thing is, if you would upgrade to a much better Controller (like for example the STM32F103 that is available for only 2.50$ on a PCB) you could do an FFT of the raw input signal and get how ever many bands you want. This 32-bit Controller can run at 72MHz and has a lot of useful hardware components, like a DMA that can automatically collect input samples from the ADC and store them in a large buffer without interrupting the main programm. It would eliminate the need of the MSGEQ7 while having more freedom and much less components all around. If you need code for the FFT itself i could help you out I've also seen you have split the 2 MSGEQ7 with different clock speeds to get a higher frequency resolution, really nice! I've done a similar thing with the LM3915, they have 3dB resolution, so i fed one of them with a 1.5dB attenuation and had therefore doubled the resolution. Oh boy, good times

USB 5V only works for 25% brightness. use 5v 2-5a adapter for maximum brightness

Thanks for your link. That can be an option for those who can't use MSGEQ7. I suppose in a case of using just libraries for calculating bands is too expensive for performance. The author there mentions about performance. So it's better to outsource that work to hardware.

Im looking for the DMS-308V2 14 Band Spectrum Analyzer Module or the schematic and board layout files to make my own board. Can you also release the arduino code from part two and three as well how to hook up the potentiometers and buttons.

The control knobs are already settings in the part 1 arduino code. All you need to do is create some code to make those setting reference to a voltage coming from the potentiometer(dial). Simple voltage into the dial and then a measured output to the arduino. That voltage is then translated to a number for the delays. Same deal with colour settings on buttons.

im having problem whit this, plz help! i need this project for the university. - first of all sorry for my bad english. I connected everything correctly. but when i connect arduino, all 14 bands of the leds light up as if there was noise, but the aux is not connected to anything. also I have provided that your msgeq7 scheme is different from the one searched on the internet, as you can see, the pin config is different.

maybe something's wrong. Check the Arduino pins and Si5351 board connection pins again. And i recommended use original msgeq7

Thank you so much for the schematic and codes. I was able to build it with slight modification: 7 band left, 7 band right, with 30leds on each band - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--eV4D99hUYc.html I have two questions I hope you can help me with. One, how are you powering it using external power supply. I had tried 5v and from 500ma to 5m with no success. The arduino powers up but will not run the code. I also tried using the 5v pin with ground connected together with out success. Second question is what part of the coding can I modify to have a rainbow effect in each band? Thank you again. I had fun building this spectrum analyzer.

You must use a minimum power supply of 5A for above 200 LEDs. Arduino must be as close as possible to the LED and use Shielded wire signal cable. for coding the rainbow effect it cannot be explained because it is very difficult. thanks😀

it's only a board for ic msgeq7. if you look at the schematic is the same. it can be less than 20 LEDs, just change the number of LEDs in Arduino code. but for more than 20 LEDs it can't because of memory limitations
