What are your thoughts on using metformin to reduce your insulin level while on a true ketogenic diet? Been on keto (less than 20 carbs a day) since September and I'm down 90 pounds. My A1C down to 4.7 but my insulin level is 12. Will a low dose of metformin help reduce my insulin levels? Thanks
@drekberg
@drekberg 5 лет назад
Typically I would say that Metformin could speed things up if you are on keto, but if your A1c is already 4.7, I don't know that it will do much. Lost 90 lbs. Nice Job.😀 That means something is working. If you are getting results, i would not add chemicals to the mix. I would probably suggest longer fasting periods to get the insulin to release it s grip. Try 24h, 36h, 48h etc. See how you feel and when and if you're ready try 7 days or so. Just be sure to monitor closely, because taking medication on a fast could make you hypoglycemic.

@@drekberg Thank you for your response. Prior to keto I was on two different medications for diabetes. Now I have come to a point that I backed off everything but a single 500 mg dose of metformin ER once a day. Next blood draws in 4 months. Will reassess the metformin's value then. Thanks again for your thoughts on the matter. I love your videos and share them often to help people understand how bad the SAD is for their bodies.

When I was diagnosed with type2, my doctor said to eat oatmeal and blueberries. I looked at her with a puzzled look and asked if she truly believed that carbs will help with type 2 diabetes. She skipped right over my question as she explained how Metformin would help. I took neither her advice or her medication. I did exactly as described here. Needless to say, I do not have type 2 diabetes any longer and feel like a million bucks.

Same here, although I did take the meds for a while, went on a strong keto diet and lots of exercise. Things went well for a while, then I started getting complacent and indulging in a bad diet again and also not exercising as much, then relying on the meds as a crutch. I am back on the diet and exercise, and plan to come of the meds again, soon.

@bain5872 8 месяцев назад
@@hrh-xj4fh I disagree. The diet I was eating caused the condition. My blood sugar is perfectly normal and has been so for years. I have reintroduced limited carbs back into my diet and I'm normal. The important point here is carbs must be consumed in moderation. A person that is type 1 diabetic is an actual disease and this condition must be treated medically.

The most prophetic thing I have heard on this subject was written by Dr Jason Fung in his book the diabetes code is “ type 2 diabetes is a dietary disease, and the only solution is a dietary one”. The pill pushers at the doctors office just want to give you meds that will make you gain lots of weight. They won’t advise you to fast. The absolute worst drug you can use is a long acting insulin, you will do nothing but gain weight. Fasting and exercise is the answer.

I am an internal medicine physician and i totally agree with you regarding the diet recommendation .. unfortunately most of the physicians lack the appropriate information regarding healthy diet .. and this is the main problem I had treated alot of type 2 diabetes with healthy diet and reversed the situation .. many of them are living healthy life now Our main problem in this modern life is our bad diet habit My regards

The reason they lack the information is that in our for profit health care system the large pharmaceutical industry and food trade organizations are funding the studies and those creating the training information. Naturally anything that would interfere with the flow of profits is left out.

I just diagnosed T2D yesterday with 7.4 a1c. The doctor straight away say I must take medicine. I said I am in process of reversing my Diabetic, doing fasting. She said fasting will do no good because it is not because of the food, it is because your body insulance resistance. 1 part correct and 1 part wrong i guess. And the doctor said Fasting will make me weak, but I told her I have 24hrs fasting and I feel OK. very confusing with these doctors.
@wakeup6759
@wakeup6759 2 года назад
the reason why most physicians lack education regarding diet is because since big pharma owns the medical schools, they deliberately don't include diet education for doctors. because if everyone starts getting diet advice from their doctors, they'll start feeling better which means less meds and profit for big pharma. as a doctor, you should know that because non-holistic doctors work for big pharma.

At the point of writing I have lost about 11 stones (150 lbs or so) since July of 2018 - But 8 of those stones since January 2019... Having been fat for around 20 years, I finally found explanations which made sense over Xmas of 2018 reference my own over production of insulin. I have found that if I don't provoke my pancreas into overdoing the insulin, the weight just falls off me. This is not about over consumption of cakes and biscuits... this is about not eating fruit, Weetabix, Shredded wheat, corn-oil; not eating 3 times a day and instead eating when properly hungry etc, etc, etc. My HB1AC has fallen from 6.5 in May of 2018 to 5.1 in July of this year. I no longer take any meds for the diabetes and my blood pressure is now very nearly normal. If only I knew what I have recently found out but 20 years ago. Too much insulin makes you fat and stops you losing weight - good luck everyone - is someone like me can do it *so can you*

Make sure you keep your electrolytes up (NOT sports drinks though!). Get a hi-potency potassium supplement, take a dime sized sprinkle of salt (I drink it down ini one gulp with a tablespoon of water follwoed by a nice big glass of water. Otherwise you're gonna feel dizzy & weak as you get dehydrated. Oh and invest in some good recipe ingredients like almond & coconut flour to stave off cravings for wheat & sweets, and some stevia --w/o maltodextrin. Lots of pitfalls to navigate. Dr Berg on youtube has lots of info on that. Good luck!

6 weeks ago I tested my blood glucose and it was 115, it was a shock to me as I'm very fit at 45 years old with about 10% body fat. I was prediabetic!!! Knowing that I have a long history of diabetes in my familly, I searched the internet ways to prevent T2D. Found your channel and plenty others I considered starting a low carb diet and was hesitating between Keto and carnivore diet I finally decided to do keto mostly because I found easier for me to get saciated with fat as the volume of food is less. 5 weeks after starting a keto diet my morning glucose is between 85-95. and the benefits are huge, mental clarity among all. But the most intersting is that even after losing 7 pounds in this time period I gain strenght at the gym, it came to a total surprise to me because I always taught the strenght always comes with weight gain :) At least on a high carb diet. Been measuring my blood sugar and generally in the low 100s which corresponds to an a1c of 5.4 or less. I am confident this approach is working and plan on following it going forward. Any doctor who recommends a high carb diet to any diabetic, Type I or 2, should go back to med school and try again. NO doctor should ever encourage carbs, especially processed carbs, to a diabetic. It's a known fact however, that many doctors know little about Diabetes. My husband is a T1D and has been for 55 years. One clueless doctor nearly killed him years back, and I fired him! Meanwhile some true experts moved to our area and things became much better for diabetics. Don't ever be afraid to fire a bad or less knowledgeable doctor; they are certainly not all created equally and the good ones are worth fighting for to be under their care!

@francesknighton2836
@francesknighton2836 5 лет назад
@@catalinacassineri6435 Yes, we have lost weight. It is coming off slowly for me and quicker for my husband. We are focusing on the blood sugar numbers. This is the first "diet" (now a way of eating for us) that has made a huge difference in the blood glucose. When I started my fasting glucose was 182 and it came down about 10 points each week. It is still not where I want it, but is much better. I have also gradually cut back on the Metformin over 2 months. After a week, my husband found he didn't need to take insulin shots any more. He monitors it very closely, but without the carbs, his numbers stayed good without the shots. No doctor had ever told us we could improve our diabetes if we cut out the carbs. They always said to take the drugs and lose weight, but the plan to lose weight had too many carbs and never worked long term. This is like a miracle for us, yet so simple.

I was shocked when i heard it! I just wanted to report this to you, cause it was a very dangerous statement that lots of people can follow and get into an even worse situation! Mqybe you could make a video about these terrible misinformation that is around and warn the people about this! Thanks for sharing with us all your knowledge, making our lives a lot better!

I suspect insulin resistance can be created by fats--it matters what kinds of fat you eat even on keto! PUFA fats cause abnormalities in membranes in mitochondria and cells and this can derail healthy metabilism. They are not as easily metabolized/removed either. Am thinking clean high quality saturated fats are not a problem for more people, except for some people who have a gene that causes them to convert it to pufa fat--SCD1 I believe. We are not all the same, so it is likely that certain people can develop diabetes from fat consumption and clearly there is also huge variability in carb tolerances.

Before my injury I was very active, playing sports, hiking, hunting and fishing. My job was labor intensive as well. Then my doctor told me I had developed type 2 diabetes and prescribed medication. When I got home I looked up the medication on the internet. It said to use this medication where diet and exercise did not work. I was kind of ticked off and only used the medication for a short time. On my next visit to the doctor I told him that I had stopped taking the medication. He asked why. I told him what I found on the internet about diet and exercise and that we hadn't tried either one. I also told him that I thought that was sheer laziness for both of us. After that I cut away back on sugar and try to be as active as I can be despite my injury. Since then I have lost 60 pounds and lower my blood sugar significantly. Berberine helps improve insulin resistance, so that would be unlikely. Dr. Ben Bikman has addressed Berberine. Same with Mike Mutzel. You can look them up. Perhaps they will mention something that sparks a connection for you and you can figure it out. You can also try stopping the Berberine for a month and see if your body responds differently. Best of health to you.

I feel like I have been lied to! Thank Dr. Ekberg💕💕💕💕 In February I weighed 504 pounds. I started a keto diet on 3/18 and have lost 30 pounds. I was taking Humulin R 500 23-26 units twice a day, I am now taking 10 units twice a day. My sugars were still a bit high I thought, but did not want to crash and eat sugar. I had my A1C tested. From February to June it went from 8.4 to 7.1 on LESS insulin. I have not started IF yet and have not even started exercise yet... my clothes are loose, I think more clearly, I am less hungry! IF is next step! Right now I am down to having 3 hard boiled eggs at 8am, an Atkins shake at 2pm and a fatty protein and green vegetables at 7pm. No food intake between 7pm and 8am. I drink plenty of iced water and Zero calorie Power Ade. I want to thank you for your clear breakdown of why Keto works! I finally feel like I am on the right path. Also I tried to explain to my endocrinologist why I was taking less insulin, at first, she was totally against, then she saw how much my A1C dropped. She told me to keep doing whatever it is I am doing. 😊😊😊😊

Berberine has also been shown to lower glucose levels in people with insulin resistence and type 2 diabetes. Studies show that it helps your body respond better to insulin and prevents your liver from creating more glucose. As a result, people with diabetes may find berberine helps lower their blood sugar levels.

Thank you so much, Dr.Ekberg. I understood that video very well. Trying to understand insulin resistance can be very confusing. You explain very well and are a great teacher. You're changing the future for me and lots of other suffering people who have very few sources of correct information. God bless you.

Becoming healthier because of these videos. A1C is now good. Have not gained weight for 6 months and have lost some but not enough. I eat once or twice a day in the middle of the day, eating within a four or six hour range. I stop eating after 4:00 p.m. thank you

I agree with the comments of others. Sometimes you need to get whacked with some common sense.... You're right, the only way out is to reduce carbs and try and burn more calories. Thank you!

Lots of good information. My A1C is slowly dropping as I've really limited the carbs. I am on Metformin, but it shouldn't be bad since I've gone low carb. Metformin does have a lot of other good components that are actually good for you in other categories. Hopefully I'll be out of pre-diabetes soon & I will be able to drop it.

Truly a great ability of a teacher is to be incredibly smart yet bring things to common understanding and actionable outcome options. Many thanks indeed for your gifts of time, and passion to serve, with little expectation of remuneration. I will support your channel when I’m working again! Thanks kindly

Dr Sten, I hope you live a very long, happy life. You have helped so many people including myself. You're more informed than my gynaecologist and my endocrinologist together. I'm sick of getting medicines and treatments which cause me more imbalance. Attacking the root problem changing eating habits (since you are what you eat) is the answer. thank you so much for all this valuable information.

Dr. Ekberg, David Sinclair who does research at Harvard wrote a book called Lifespan where he explains that Metformin has the function of poisoning mitochondria. Impaired mitochondria pushes the body to more anaerobic respiration, which makes glucose burning more inefficient (fewer ATP per multiple of glucose), which is how people lose weight with Metformin. Of course, there are side effects, but it's not one of those things that work by cramming more sugar into the cells. If anything, it has a laxative effect that can also interfere with absorption of sugar from food.
