We no longer take a lot of liquids with us, instead we take toothpaste tabs, solid lotion bar and a solid shampoo bar. With a capsule wardrobe using black, grey, brown and blue, I can pack 4 tops, 1 hoodless sweatshirt, 1 pair of blue jeans and 1 pair of black jeans, 5 pairs of Mereno wool socks, 5 undies, 2 bras, lightweight PJ's, a sleeveless quick dry turtleneck for layering, and long sleeve fitted quick dry top for layering, 2 pairs of black leotards for layering and 4 thin linen scarves. By mixing and matching I can create at least 12 different outfits. Everything is packed in a 36 litre Osprey Farpoint wheeled backpack. We are planning a 3-month trip to Europe and UK with just this bag and a personal item bag which will double as our day bags. Instead of a bulky water bottle we take a 9-ounce Swell bottle, keeps water super cold, keeps you hydrated and doesn't take up a ton of space. There are so many way to save space, weight and stress when packing carry-on only!

I invested in a couple of space savers recently & couldn't be happier. I bought the bar shampoo and conditioner from Lush and then bought the Matador soap bag to carry them in. The shampoo lasts forever, works great, doesn't count as a liquid, and takes up minimal space. The Matador soap bag has some sort of technology that allows the shampoo bar to dry without getting goopy. It's been a game changer.

I bought a 5 pack of contact lens cases at dollar tree and filled with different toiletries. One has face scrub, another case has face cream, and another case has Vaseline in one side and Vicks in the other side. Used a marker to write what is in side. And had left overs even after a week traveling. This made carry on The best experience and learned a long time ago to wear clothes more than once, mix and match. . Great video … thanks so much.

We have a 7 kilo weight limit in Australia with most of the airlines for carry on and you have to pay more for checked luggage. I go for a bar for shampoo and conditioner as I’m highly allergic and bar deodorant. I don’t use a toiletry bag as I use zip lock plastic bags as less weight and see through. Sunglasses are important to have UV protection as you can develope macular degeneration and can protect you from skin cancer.

I travel a lot. I have shoulder problems. I will gladly pay to check my bag and not have to deal with possibly hurting my shoulders (which ruins my trip) by putting my bag in the overhead. I keep an AirTag in the bag, and I carry a small backpack with my most important things like my meds and documents. My checked bag still is carry-on size but it’s 100% worth the investment to be able to get in and out of the plane easily, and not have to hurt my shoulders. I have never lost a bag. I guess the only drawback would be that I have to wait to collect my luggage at my destination, but I use that time to get caught up, use the restroom, and stretch my legs. Never heard of a buff but in colorado we call it a neck gator. I prefer bringing a bandana or two. Even more useful, because you can use them as a washcloth, a scarf, eye cover, shade cloth, hair tie - so many uses and very easy to wash and dry.

I sometimes pack disposable cloths. On a trip to Peru, we started in Cusco, 9,000 ft elevation. I intentionally packed a rolling duffle with kids winter clothing and gave it to the hotels house keepers. Very appreciated. I left behind my own sweater, next stop the Amazon.

If you are bringing an iPad or kindle, you can also check out ebooks, including guide books, from the library in advance. I do bring a black pashmina-like shawl that also functions as a blanket, scarf, pillow (in a gallon ziplock bag). Using a Buff as an eye mask is a great idea!

I had to find a place to put my reply, and this appears to be the most relevant. I have travelled nationally and internationally for over 60 years. I’ve used the whole range of transport options, public, air, land and sea, own vehicle, hitchhiking, flying, - what have I left out? There is nothing new under the sun for packing and preparing appropriately for travel that I have not discovered, tried, tested, accepted or rejected. I watch your videos, and others of similar nature, always hoping that there is going to be one magic item or method that will revolutionise my travelling experience; so far, no. So I suppose your videos are useful to people who haven’t had the chance to develop their own methods, people who are relatively inexperienced, or perhaps not clear thinkers. Still, as always, I’m disappointed that you haven’t (yet?) introduced me to that “one magic item…….”

When hubby and I drove through the Yucatan peninsula decades agoI found an incredible painted clay statute of a Mayan woman. I carried her home on my lap. When we went to Jamaica I bought a large wooden carved statue of a woman and carried her home as well. It was worth the hassle as I still have them and they are a great remembrance of those fantastic trips.

I agree with everything but the travel blanket! I get cold easy and it has saved my life I hotels! I use a blanket scarf so it’s versatile. I also bought a small clear plain toiletry bag, learned that lesson in Spain when they were sticklers about my liquids and made me put it in a ziplock bag but let my husband leave his in his small plain clear case. It’s all I use now even if I don’t travel abroad lol

Totally agree. This was going to be 1 of my comments. And given that these items have SO many other uses (towel, picnic blanket, table cloth, scarf, poncho, skirt etc etc) they're totally worth the space (Especially since they're outer wear, so throw it around your neck and it doesn't even count as carry on)

I never use sleeping mask on the plane. Instead I always wear a good hoodie. When I want to get some sleep and the light borders me, I pull the hood down to cover a half of my face - it gives enough privacy and it is available at any moment if my trip. 💖

I agree with all your items except the checked bag. It’s all fine and dandy not to travel with checked luggage when going on an island vacation but how do you travel with only 7kg (that’s including the weight of the bag) for a 6 week vacation? 7kg is our carry on limit. We use our plastic liquids bag as our toiletries bag to cut down on weight too.
@daveperry5063
@daveperry5063 5 месяцев назад
That is our issue also. Getting there from overseas there isn't usually a kg limit for the carry on BUT the flights I take within Europe or whatever country I am in definitely does have a limit on their carry ons. And it is usually 7kg as you said. Like you said that includes the weight of the bag so how in the world do I pack everything when I only have 3-4kg to work with. (meds, camera, shoes, all the clothes I will need etc. And we pack the minimum and wash clothes and stuff.) So we always end up checking one bag between us. It is not that big but that way it takes care of what we can't fit in our carry ons because of weight restrictions.
@susie9893
@susie9893 4 месяца назад
I did a 6 week trip over Christmas in Canada carry on only (and yes, the whole 7k limit etc). The first rule: leave the laptop at home. 2nd rule: leave the tablet/iPad at home. 3rd rule minimise your tech (yeah, you're not gonna be able to bring your video camera or slr, much less, audio equipment). 4th rule: minimise your liquids (liquids are heavy) - look at dry shampoos, soaps, deodorants, moisturiser etc. 5th rule: think about your wardrobe in creative ways and TRY to take only 1pr of shoes (which you'll wear on the plane; personally I wore snow boots on the plane/s - several flights, international+domestic - and packed a pair of foldable ballet flats)

I’ve been to too many hotels that run out of shampoo or body wash. The front desk calls housekeeping which takes forever if they come at all. Even in nicer hotels. I will always bring my soap & shampoo bars. Last trip to Atlanta they didn’t even have sheets on one bed. They never came. Finally a worker brought a blanket. No pillow or sheets. This was a nicer hotel too.

as a frequent traveler I agree with most of these! I will GATE check my luggage in a heartbeat (my husband refuses LOL) but it's super rare for me to intentionally pack in a bag that HAS to be checked. I do keep a compression bag of a few items of essential clothing in my personal item bag in case of lost luggage (in case of a connecting flight or some other random mishap with a gate checked bag). I dress in layers, including (even in summer because I am ALWAYS cold) a cardigan style chunky knit sweater that is large enough that I can kind of wrap around me and it even covers up my legs enough to work as a quasi blanket, Ive bundled it up and used it as a pillow (I almost always get a window seat so I can lean against it). Some things I ALWAYS have in my personal item bag (which this video isnt about but I thought I'd mention).... zipties (just a few), carbiner clips, and a couple of bungee cords of different sizes. small, light, don't take up any space, and have all come in handy more times than I can recall! Oh, I DO bring my stainless steel cup but its not quite as large as your stanley. I pour all my drinks in it. And in the case of turbulence or a jerked knee- or careless neighbor-it doesnt spill on me.... or anyone else. ;) (though this can be accomplished by lighter cups also with a lid, but I prefer my cup. We all make our choices as to whats important to us lol)

I agree with not having the huge toiletry bag and neck pillow. But I will never give up my checked bag. I tried 2 weeks on a tour in Europe - and ended up needing to get another suitcase because of the stuff I bought. Lesson learned, I will always have a checked bag. The travel size toiletries also a big agree! The only thing we will bring is toothpaste. I need my toothpaste for sensitive teeth. What I like to do is bring samples. I get samples of moisturizer, serum, perfume, etc. As I use it, I toss it and I have less to bring home.

The trtl neck pillow is a sleeper hack.... In more ways than one It has a secret feature. The plastic's memory allows it to go nearly flat. Don't be afraid to flatten it out a bit in your bag, it will always go back into shape. But to be honest I tend to use my rab synthetic down jacket (packs into its own pocket) and put that into my buff around my neck. And believe it or not...i put my flare earplugs in then pull up my buff over my eyes and ears. Yes I look insane but it couldn't care less 😂 it screams "leave me alone"

I have all my toiletries in solids, a large thin merino woolen scarf for my blanket, it folds up really flat if I don't want to wear it, and a Trtle neck pillow which fits beautifully in a corner, and I never sleep anywhere without an eye mask. And I have a super lightweight bottle carrier for the bottle of water that I buy at the airport. And a mini painting/drawing set and sketchbook. Thanks a lot for the video. I never used/needed an eye mask, but I love my neck pillow. 😉 I don't need any liquid bottles because I take a soap bar for hair and body and tooth tablets instead of paste. The only liquid I take is my small deodorant. The problem with travelling only with carry-on is the weight limit of the airlines. Cathay Pacific - for example - allows only 7kg for carry-on, including personal item and - I can't pack for 2 months in 7kg....... The idea of lightweight luggage is wonderful. But here in Germany the lightest I found has 1.4kg..... und that is to much having only 7kg for all.

I have had to travel domestically for work and I watched several videos before I left. Nearly all of my space is filled up with a CPap sleep apnea device and I have several maintenance medications that I have to get in 3 month’s worth. I’ve been told that it’s ideal to travel with the original container for them. The CPap case is 13x14x5 it holds the device the headset and the power supply and I’ve added a extension cord from experience when staying in hotels. I travel 3 times now for 4 days each time with a carryon wheeler and a 30l pack. I’m still trying to figure out how to get it down further . I’m trying to get a smaller CPap for travel, but I have to work through the doctor to get a script for it and I have to save up for it as insurance doesn’t cover the second one. Have you looked at stuff like that? Thank you for all your videos as you two where a big help in getting ready for these trips.

Ask your pharmacy for labels and smaller bottles for your meds. Most are very accommodating and that saves a lot of space. Also, the CPAP case isn’t supposed to count against your carry-on and personal item allowance. While they are very expensive, I finally got the travel CPAP and it has been worth every cent I paid. I did luck out on a sale last December that reduced it a little.

I would agree on the eye mask if you don’t fly much. But when you do one or more multi thousand mile flights a week for 30 weeks a year you learn that anything you can do relax on a flight is worth it. An eye mask can help and takes less space than a couple credit cards. And a well made one will keep it off your eyelids unlike a buff. But pillows and bulky blankets should leave behind unless you are on a longer flight. Sometimes those 10+ hour flight are much better with a gravel blanket. And for toiletries get the reusable toothpaste tubes from matador. The small gets you 3 weeks of toothpaste and the large is a couple weeks of shaving cream.

To be honest, I find not checking a bag and dragging a suitcase behind me, as well as carrying a backpack to be far more stressful. I used to travel carry-on only and it just added a layer of complication for me that made travel so much more anxiety-inducing. I'll take the risk and check a bag. However, I'm visually disabled, so for me it's one more thing I have to worry about the whole time, or make the airport assistant worry about. But as much as it sucks to not see well in situations like travel, it also means I do tend to get through security and customs a bit faster because there's a staff member guiding me and they're very helpful, great people. I also have to be pre-boarded so the flight attendant can physically lead me to my seat and help me get settled, they're also great people.

This is spot on! The only things I am not willing to sacrifice is the book and the water bottle 😂! But everything yes 💯! I always just do carry-on unless I am going home (Puerto Rico) because I know, I am coming back loaded with goodies and it is a direct flight. However, I made an exception when I went to Vietnam , April 2023 everything carry-on as usual BUT with an almost empty check-in bag (18 pounds out of the max 50) it was candy and toiletries we were planing to drop off at an orphanage and with the plan to bring it back with goodies for friends that have not visited their country in a while. Well shame on me for NOT doing my research they weighed mine and my husband’s carry-on! The lady at the counter (Eva Airline) said you will have to check it in is too heavy (mine was 21 husband was 24) I panicked because we each had EVERYTHING in our carry-on. What save us was, that almost empty check-in bag that I NEVER check-in for international trips! We took some items out from the carry-on to the check in bag it what a relief it was to keep our carry-on. Our layover was in Taiwan (12 hours) so we got our check-in bag went for a short stroll in Taipei came back to the airport early (3rd person in line for check-in) and bang both carry-ons were taken way from us, because again they said it was to heavy (VietJet Air) they took our carry-on right off the bat no chance to dump more on the check in luggage that was still under weight. Also when in Vietnam we took 3 domestic flights, in all 3 domestic flights they took our carry-on and the flights were literally EMPTY 😂! No luggage was lost for or delay but it was nerve racking and a lesson learn on my end. Do my research 🧐!

Carry on only can be more difficult in SE Asia and Oceania where not only are you restricted on the size of your carry on, you are also limited by weight. Usually 7kg, sometimes that's total (your carry on plus personal item), sometimes it's 7kg plus personal item, occasionally it may be up to 10kg. And they can and do weigh it! We've seen people having to dispose of things from their carry on or pay exhorbitant gate check in fees in Australia, Thailand and Malaysia.

Also an Aussie... I've done carry on only for long weekends away in SE Asia, but for longer trips when you add the DSLR camera and accoutrements, video camera etc. 7kg can be tight! Travelling from Perth we often use low cost carriers, in which case the allowance is 7kg total (carry on plus personal item weights are combined) - even some of the full service airlines now consider it a combined weight (e.g. Malaysian Airlines). Also, as soon as you have any essential equipment (e.g. CPAP machine) it becomes even more difficult.
@susie9893

@@LeesreeNSubbi well my cousin travels in Asia all the time and he says his cpap never counts as carry on. And I don't carry all that camera gear etc anymore. Worked very well and I regretted nothing (except I probably need to get a smaller powerbank - mine's pretty heavy duty + a little old school now - wireless charging option would be great)
@LeesreeNSubbi
@LeesreeNSubbi 4 месяца назад
@@susie9893 It can be pretty hit and miss on the CPAP. They're definitely exempt if travelling to and from the USA as there are rules that essentially say medical equipment cannot be counted towards carry on. AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Jetstar and Scoot all advise the CPAP machine is included in baggage allowance for SE Asia flights, though there are reports out there that it's not always enforced. Essentially though, the same ease of travelling carry-on only doesn't apply in this region because your allowance is weight limited (generally somewhere around 7kg or 10kg) whereas in the USA the restriction relates to the size of the carry-on but not the weight.

You refusing to mention that most all foreign brand airlines limit of each bag weight is only 7kg, 15 lbs. So your packing carry-on is crap. I worked for years as an A&P aircraft mechanic and rarely are the fresh water tanks sanitized and bacteria grows in them. On long flights you must drink a half liter per hour as the air in the cabin is dryer than any desert, also additionally it helps curb jetlag. Do drink alcohol as it increases jetlag. I started using 2, 1 liter you use backpacking I have multi pocket jacket for when going through TSA as I put all loose idems in it so it scattered in the tray. Also I wear in layers then jacket over. Most my flights is to the Philippines. If destination is cold then I take a puffy coat. Rarely go to the EU especially now they have new rules for Americans. I leave my shoes untied so easy off and on 😮 dark socks, on long flights using compression socks. Women should not hose and shorts or short skirts, in case of an emergency and the slides used they will melt and bare skin will be friction burned. I am 6ft 200# and packing can be an issue in carry-on. I use the 3-1-1 liquids. I have Mono check hard side bag and a mate to as carry-on my wife likes. My carry-on is a Osprey farpoint 40 which great. Roller are heavier and makes the bigger. Usually I have just my carry-on and personal item. For reading I quit the kindle as it does work anymore without Wi-Fi so I installed kindle app on the tablet on. Do carry the laptop. Just more weight. Check the carry-on weights. I refuse to use the USA branded airlines as too many drunk pot smokers causing problems. Wished they would ban alcohol at airports and on flights. If alcohol to fly stay home.

I am going on an international trip for 2 weeks using only a person item (18 liter backpack) My biggest concern is my heavy winter coat. My time will be spent in a large city.

Wear the coat (and as much gear as you can) on the flight. Also, technically outerwear doesn't count as carry on - I've turned up to flights carrying my coats + big blanket scarf in 1 of those cloth shopping bags and not even been questioned [but other times I've felt like I should pile it on before I get to the gate - but once you're on the plane you can strip it all off if you need to]. Also, umbrella + waterbottle don't count as carry on so you can attach these to the outer of your bag. And many airlines won't count a small bag (sling) you wear close to your body containing valuables (but if you feel it might be an issue just cover it with your coat)
