Instead of a padlock, I carry a cable lock. I use it mostly on trains as I'm a solo traveller and I can lock my bag when I go off to the bar or toilet. The cable is adjustable so it works as a padlock too. It's also lighter. If someone wants to steal they will, this is just so they move on to easier targets.

Carabiners. I use them to secure the zippers on my backpack, to hook my keys to my purse, hang my backpack, secure gear in a boat. Secure my purse to a shopping cart. Lots of uses.

I've been a semi-full-time traveler now for about 20 years. I always carry a partial roll of toilet paper with the tube removed. I can't tell you how many times where the only available toilet is out. I carry a TSA compliant multi-tool in my pocket (currently Gerber Dime). I always have enough cash hidden to get back home (I had to use this in Benghazi in 2011). Depending on where I am going, I sometimes carry a SAT phone - governments will turn off cell and internet systems during civil unrest. Just a couple of plain handkerchiefs are nice. I do not carry a spork, but I do carry an old titanium long handled spoon. I have an old expired gift card wrapped in Duct tape - it has come in handy dozens of times. I carry a small rechargeable flashlight. I carry a color copy of my passport - on the back, I have the phone numbers of nearly everyone I know. I carry a Sea to Summit clothesline.

I'm amazed your Gerber never got seized. I've had ostensibly TSA compliant items taken away too many times to mention. There's no arguing in the security line. No matter how right you are, they're not going to lose face.

I always travel with my "emergency kit" even when at home , it doesn`t leave my carry on , just refill and put back in it The container... a trifold pouch( 4x4x10 inches closed) 1-sewing kit, (just 2 needles, some thread, some bobby pins and elastic) 2- meds with the description and use of each drug, 3-mini notebook and pen, 4-tiny embroidery kit with a 4 inch hoop, for long stopovers( strangely a good way to start conversations on airports) 5- a small 10.000 mAh powerbank 6-a plastic picnic cutlery set that I had for more than 10 years now and still in perfect shape 7-toothbrush with tiny toothpaste + soap sheets and some compressed towels 8-travel size wet wipes + makeup wipes +feminine wipes 9-ultra basic makeup kit ....tinted cc-cream, 4 color MAC palette (nude beige, taupe, chocolate and soft coral ( works for eye, brow, liners and blush), Mac`s FIX+( transforms shadows into liquid liners ;) ,sets and refreshens makeup) , tiny lipgloss, tiny mascara, 2 brushes and an old LÒreal Infallible pro-contour brush that i LOVE ( just 1.5x1.5 inches and 1/8th of an inch thick and it really does it`s job! ) 10- 2 carabiners and 2 small TSA approved locks 11-fast charger and cable AND YES !!! all this fits in it ! :)

I have recently started traveling (especially flying) with a plastic grocery bag that I fold up (think, folding a flag) into a triangle as tiny as my thumb. This seems silly to some, I know, but my husband and I do worry about drinks, finished food, wrappers, etc, just sitting on an open tray table until a flight attendant can come by and pick it up. This tiny little triangle gets opened up as part of my "getting settled" in on the plane. It follows my disinfecting the tray, etc around me. I simply open it and tie it to the tray table and it serves as our personal little garbage bag until the trash is picked up.

It’s always interesting to see what other people consider essential for their travels. On this list the only item I travel with is the portable power bank. My essentials: original birth certificate (to recover lost passport), Cipro (for food poisoning), ginger gum (nausea), antibacterial wipes, hand & face wipes (can double as tp), nail clippers and tweezers. I have a folding spork that I take to work with my work lunches. I rarely take an international adapter - I have multi chargers from various countries that are lighter weight and have up to 4 USB ports.

With frequent trips to Africa I have found 2 useful items. Oregano Oil capsules are great if I have eaten some questionable street food. The capsule will kill bacteria while in the stomach before it gets to intestines where it makes you sick. Secondly, 3 or 4 different sizes of bathtub/sink stoppers. Often not provided in hotels or hostels.

In our 60’s now, my wife and I have been travelling the world for decades and here’s my advice for today’s travel. Unless you like the taste of a tongue depressor, take your own spork or better yet, my wife and I each take a knife, fork and spoon camping kit. They are not metal, some kind of heavy duty plastic, but they have never been rejected in my carry on. As so many food outlets and airlines have gone to wooden ‘tongue depressor’ utensils, these make eating airline and fast food great again. Next, only travel with a small carry on bag and a daypack. We no longer check in luggage. Whether you go for 6 months, 6 weeks or 6 days, you can live out of a small carry on unless you are doing specialty adventures. The secret to packing is to lay out everything you think you need and walk away for a day or two. Then come back and remove 1/2 the stuff. Walk away again and come back later and remove 1/2 again. Do this until everything you are taking is just the essentials and easily fits in your small carry on bag with room to spare. Don’t be afraid to be cutthroat! To alleviate the anxiety, take twice as much money or credit/debit cards. Unless you are truly going off the beaten path you will be able to purchase whatever you may need. We take quick dry clothing including only a few pairs of underwear and socks, which we then wash and dry even in hotels and B&B’s. If you really want to, you can travel with just 3 pairs of underwear and always be wearing clean ones. We don’t go quite that extreme but usually 4 or 5 max. I still like photography but have no desire anymore to carry a full-size camera body, various lenses, tripod etc. Although phone cameras are pretty good, a good camera still beats them in my opinion. I’ve gone to a very small, high end ‘professional’ point and shoot. All the major brands have an excellent selection that give excellent results unless you need a full frame mega mega pixel camera to make your living. Even though the cost to fly and travel seems to be on an exponential rise, I hope everyone gets the opportunity to get out and see this great big world and all it has to offer. Safe travels.

My best suggestion to date is in regards to packing lists. Most people will make a list & check things off as they pack. I recently discovered a new way of doing this. To avoid over-packing, I write down everything that I have put into my duffel as I pack it. This helps in several ways; I know exactly what's in my bag because I have written it down & it helps keep me from overpacking as I think of new things to add because I can look to see if I have already packed that item or not.

Great for hanging your gear when you are in situations where you don't want your stuff to be on the ground OR to hang something from a bag or something else for a moment when you can't carry it around for a second. I have travel the world. Three must have items to carry with you at all times when traveling interanationally is, Imodium, compact power adapter and samsung smart tags. Imodium because it will get you back on the road quickly. Power adapter shown in this video is traditional. I use Mogics Power Donut / Begal to safe space. It is basicaly a power strip in shape of a small donutl that includes two usb ports allowing many electronics to be plugged in at the same time. Yes, Laptop phones and watches at the same time. This strip is made for international and domestic use. Finally, I use Samsung Galaxy Smart tags becuase most of the world outside USA uses galaxy products giving me a better chance for accuracy of location for my luugage, personal bag and vehicle. One of my bags was lost by the airline in europe and I found it with the tag.

I definitely travel with a spork. I just got home from Switzerland and used it multiple times while I was there because restaurant food was crazy expensive. Instead I went to the Coop grocery store and was able to eat well for a third of the price. I also keep a spork in my car because you never know when you are going to need it for yogurt or a pint of ice cream or whatever.

I like the lock idea … definitely going to add that, plus the travel towel. I have a bamboo fork, spoon, and straw that I bring, plus, I bring a collapsible silicone bowl! It can be used as a cup for hot or cold liquids, soup, cereal, ice cream, yogurt, snacks, leftovers, etc… I also bring a small nightlight (domestic travel) and a door jam for some extra security. I like the buff idea, but I carry a shamagh style scarf in a neutral color - so many uses. I throw in a strong reusable shopping bag (it just lies flat in the suitcase) and a silk pillow case to cover hotel pillows. I love reading everyone’s travel tips!

I always bring at least a bamboo spoon to all my trips! I just invested in a set with fork, knife,etc which comes in small pouch! At one point I always buy yogurts, soups, etc..as you don't always eat healthy during a trip and I always supplement restaurant food with some more healthy choices... I always bring a bandana: you can use it around your neck, as a handkerchief, a napkin, to seat down anywhere and not get stains on your pants,etc....

I chose the Anker 733 Power Bank as my all-in-one power adapter and power bank. It operates on 120 and 240, has US plugs, two USB-C and one USB-A outputs. I also bought an inexpensive adapter plug set and only take the adapter needed for the country to which I’m traveling. That reduces my tech by at least one item, and saves me the trouble of linking my power bank to my adapter.

Essential for long trips - tri-braided stretchy drying line - no clips needed & soak brand laundry soap packets - the smallest. Individual packaged wipes (always have one or two in a pocket), listerene breath strips (smallest for fresh breath), ricola lozenges - for dry planes & helps pressure changes. Small hand drying towel. Filtering water bottle - you can fill up literally anywhere! And I always have a small art kit to sketch on the go.

I've started carrying a small reusable food container/ bag for anyone on a budget. It's something you could find easy enough most places so you can buy one once you're off the plane. But handy to have when buying a cheap bread roll/sandwhich or lose nuts as snacks from the supermarket rather than buying all meals. Also handy if you don't eat a full meal to take the rest with you rather than letting it go to waste or taking some sneaky snacks from a buffet breakfast for during the day 🤭

I have 2 things to suggest you try adding to your small essentials: a couple of clothespins and a couple of S-hooks. We have found that they come in super handy when we need to do some quick laundry. The clothespins also come in handy when we buy snacks that we don't finish (like chips or cookies) -- they seal the bags so the rest of the food doesn't go stale.

We don’t typically travel with cutlery because we’re always given free cutlery on international flight. It even comes in a nice little plastic bag and frequently comes with same salt and pepper. Yep, after our meal we toss our cutlery bag in the bag it was given to us in and put it in our travel bag. You then have a full set. This of course will fail if you travel on budget airlines that don’t serve a meal. Other small things to travel with: a pen, a flashlight, similar to the towel there are small backpacks that scrunch into a bag half the size of that towel. Very handy for getting groceries and such when you’re coming back from a day of sightseeing or popping that extra layer of clothes you needed for the morning. Lastly the never go on any trip without it, earplugs. Not just for your flights but for train travel, super loud screechy metros, hotels on busy streets, and for my wife if I snore. ;-)

@davesteen2622
@davesteen2622 Год назад
@erinlikesacornishpasty4703 I found the wood ones on the last flight good. The knife is serrated, making it easier to cut bread. The fork and spoon have held up well, too. I suppose some have an issue with wood touching their tongue. No question carrying something is a good idea, especially if you're using it daily. My point was more to think about the plane cutlery as an option. And hey, this way, you reuse what would otherwise be a single use item. You also don't have to pay extra for them, and if you lose them or wreck them, no big loss.

We take most of what you have shown. We also take a packable backpack and a couple of packages of pocket tissues. We don't take a spork but we do take a travel cutlery set each that is small and compact, knife spoon fork and chop sticks, just add on the handle and away you go. The set comes in very handy as we like to make picnic lunches which includes sandwiches. Don't really need the chop sticks but they all snap into a small thin plastic container and they do make great stir sticks! We also take a small collapsable cup, great for making instant soup or instant noodles in (we take a few packages of instant soup by knorr, just add hot water). We take a small bottle of crazy glue which comes in handy for things like when I broke my glasses in Norway! Crazy glue to the rescue!!

I also bring a foldable daypack and reusable shopping bags (nanobags pack up tiny), bring or wear a Buff, and bring a travel towel - it can double as a blanket on the plane, use as an impromptu cover up (a sarong works for this, too), picnic blanket, etc. One thing I really like to bring when I travel is UV blocking cooling sleeves, which are an extra layer of warmth that you can take off and put in your pocket if the temperature changes, and also screen from the sun, and can keep you cool if you get them wet. (Oh, cooling towels are also important if you are going to be somewhere warm.) thanks for the tips. :)

Spot on about the buff. It is wonderful. Spend the money to get a merino wool buff, wool retains heat, you won't be breathing in microfibers and not shedding microfibers too. Instead of a travel plug adapter, just buy a plug in the country. EU and many Asian countries use the same plug. They are more dependable than those travel adaptors sold at big box stores. Also most hotels will have adaptors they will loan you. Instead of a travel towel, I carry a natural fiber sarrong ( piece of cotton sheeting 1.5 m X 0.75 m) it can be used as a towel, coverup, hammock, even to help shimmying up a coconut tree. Doing a long haul flight on Tuesday, will try a spork I carry a small pair of needle nose pliers and a small bike multi tool; numerous uses, can literally be a life saver. Have never had a problem with it in my carry on in Europe or Asia. Essential if renting a bike with dubious maintenance. I carry a life straw water filter, so I don't have to buy bottled water. Maybe not essential to every one but I have a collapsible coffee filter holder, not only makes coffee but can be used to filter out debris in water before boiling it.

I travel with a reusable spork also. It’s super handy and convenient not even if you’re just a budget traveler but if your environmentally conscious. Also, if you have ever ordered delivery food and they didn’t bring you utensils this can come in handy. I bring pretty much everything you mentioned on this list. I also bring toilet paper/toilet wipe tablets. Some countries don’t have tp readily available or handy. A lot of places charge money for bathrooms and toilet paper so they are super handy and take up very little space in my day bag because I’m a one bagger.

I always travel with a spoon and dessert-sized fork, and since they're lightweight, I bring the antique silver ones I inherited. I HATE eating with plastic crappy utensils, that always clog the oceans & earth, sometimes break off in my mouth, and affect the taste of my food. Live large and economically!

Any TSA lock can be opened with a hairpin, I carry a cheap master lock for visiting gyms and other uses. There's a distinct difference between a power adapter and converter. You can get an adapter at almost any convenience store in Europe but finding a converter is almost impossible once you leave home. I like the buff idea, that's gold. Also, I carry those laundry soap sheets now-- the ones that look like a small piece of paper and quickly dissolve in water. Takes up zero room in the luggage.

I always take: 1. A length of paracord or super flexible rope to tie up a broken suitcase, use as a clothes line, tie a door shut for a little extra security, etc. 2. Binder clips to hang up clothes to dry, keep train or hotel curtains closed, keep important documents together, close a food/chip bag, etc. 3. A large scarf/shawl to add a layer of warmth, cover my head in the wind and rain, use as a blanket on the plane, provide a clean/warm surface to sit on, tie into a makeshift bag, cover my head/shoulders/shorts when culturally appropriate 4. A shallow plastic dish or plate with a cover to use for eating food from the store, storing leftovers, providing a clean surface to set something down, a place to coral your small valuables, etc. 5. Ziplocs, Ziplocs, Ziplocs for everything.

Love, love AG1! We're vegan and it has been a life saver. We usually have a green smoothie at home. But on the road that's not possible. So I went looking for a substitute. I tried it and WOW. Now we use it everyday. I let my brother try it and now he's hooked. Then my sister and brother in law, my Dad, and now my daughter too. It's a little pricey, not gonna lie. But nobody here would consider going without it now. It's THAT good!

Even though I am allergic to wool I have been using Marino wool tee shirts, shirts and socks. Wear them for a week, some people say a month without washing. I have two of everything and switch every second day. And surprising not hot in the summer! Fantastic cut my clothes in half. I use a Canadian company called ice breaker and they are having a summer sale on right now. August 2023. Cheers

It might sound funny but an essential for me is a small pack of disinfectant wipes on a flight so that I can quickly clean the tray and arm rests. I learned that from a seasoned traveller I sat beside who shared that they observed people coughing, sneezing, spilling, drooling and even changing a baby on the trays. Well that stuck with me! They usually comes in handy for other places as well. I'm definitely considering the apple airtags on the next trip. The Humangear GoBites Duo have been my favourite travel utensils thus far.

It's saved me many times. lol Zip ties too. My raincoat folds into its pocket and has a little carabiner on it so it's small and easy to pack or clip to the backpack. I actually have a camping cutlery set that is super compact but has a knife, fork and spoon. Very handy for travel to pop in the backpack and I've used it many many times. Sometimes you just need a knife too. lol

I bring a bamboo spoon and use it often. Instead of a towel, I bring a handkerchief weight cotton sarong. It's also only a few ounces... it can be used as a towel, sheet, beach cover up, beach blanket.... they also dry in the sun in about 2 minutes. I travel with backpacking gear so I use a super lightweight nylon backpack the double as both a day hike, day sight seeing, grocery collecting bag, but also since my backpacking gear is ultralight, I can shift things into it to create a carry on size and under the seat bag for flying to avoid checked baggage charges... Just returned to the usa after traveling in europe and non schengen countries for 15 months. If planning day hikes a mosquito proof head net can double as a stuff sack. Better yet a midgeproof headnet for scotland, Ireland and maybe all of uk. Anker is most definitely an excellent choice for a powerbank. Another is the nitecore nb 10k or 20k. Super quick charge and carbon fiber caseing so it's smaller and sleeker, ha! Cool looking. Time tested by thru hikers over some years. Available at garage grown gear.

I started traveling with handkerchief and soap sheets- the tiny ones in a pack that are smaller than a pack of gum. Have come in handy traveling all over esp when there isn't soap but there is water- can use to wash other things like my spork, clothes etc and handkerchief takes place of towels. I also always travel with a packable bag- either a tote or daypack that packs down to size of my palm or smaller. I use these bags when shopping or if I find I picked up some souvenirs and need more room. Usually i have a small pack of body wipes as well because you never where the day will take you and it can help freshen you up. I bring a couple ziplock bags- the reusable kind - use it for so many things. Also i have a caribiner on my backpack- have used it for so many things- hanging things up in hotel, using it to attach a bag or shoes to the backpack etc, Thanks for your tips!

I agree with the Spork or any eating utensils in your pack, so I didn’t find that as weird at all, it is very necessary. I travel for work as a tour musician and lately, internationally……so it’s hardly the same level of travel as you guys are doing. I”ve discovered that utensils are not always offered with Take out, as well as I have packable food with me so I don’t eat out the entire time when we’re on location. That was a good video. I had already been thinking about adding the air tags to my travel gadgets. I have one for you and you may think it's crazy. I travel with a 6 inch extension cord. I started taking this because I found sometimes electrical outlets are in places where it's really next to impossible to plug one of those charging bricks into the socket. I probably wouldn't take it if I were a carryon-only traveler but if you are packing a bag its the kind of item where you can always find a space for it.

"A towel, [The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough." I like the microfiber, easily packable towels. They dry quickly and yet absorb a lot of water.
