I was surprised when you added the 90 degree drill attachment, I can only imagine it was to take the load away from the little stepper motor bearing/bushing? I would wager that 90 degree gearbox is you’re biggest efficiency drop, was it making all the noise? Great video as usual!

@@Bushybowl Yeah, he made a rowing machine with a generator powering up small battery or capacitor so kids had to take turns power up the console. Pedal generator would work perfectly leaving hands free for playing the game while generating the power needed at the same time.

a big motor would have a lot of torque mate - the motor doesn't generate it converts my mechanical energy into electrical energy - I can only generate so much as I only have so much arm strength - 50 Watts or so would be the most I could manage I would think

So, if you connect the output of the stepper to a step down transformer, you could get 12v and a couple amps, which can be used to charge batteries

I have discovered that the AGNI or Lynch motor makes a fantastic hand cranked generator as well as other input DC motor/generator/dynamo, with no gearbox required. They are fantastic motors for many applications...The Agni/Lynch Motor is a unique axial gap permanent magnet high power DC motor gives up to 93% efficiency, and it maintains high efficiency over a wide range of loads and speeds. It runs on D.C. up to 60 volts at which it can produce 9 Kilowatts (12 horsepower). The low shaft speed and high torque enable the use of a simple, cheap and efficient transmission in most applications. A 22 lb motor, it will run on a couple double AA batteries very slowly but with surprising torque, all the way up to running on an 90 volt EV battery and installed in a racing motorcycle!!! I would recommend them to anyone as I consider them a little known disruptive technology if they were to be mass produced at different scales/sizes.

Very cool! I always wondered why everyone pedaling at the gym was just going to friction and heat, rather than lights and air conditioning. Put some batteries in each machine to smooth out the variability in available power maybe, but still absolutely viable!

I don't think that is the case mate - exercise bikes are a first world phenomenon and we love increasing complexity - take peloton as an example

I do agree with something like dumping into a supercap and into a simple USB charger.. it's just a little hard to justify trying to take that energy elsewhere when humans are such an ineffecient source.. the novelty of charging your own phone or as an emergency supply I think has merit.

Today it is feasible to provide good lighting with as little as 5 watts . A big difference to the days of 100 watt incandescent light bulbs . Bycycle power wasn't feasible for incandescent light bulbs; a generator was required.

love the plaster .reminds me of kenny everitts sketches .but serious . i always pour some hydrogen peroxide mix with water on cuts as it aids recovery and cleaneses the cut quick .having myself had cellulitis from such i learnt my lesson and do it all the time now

finally a stepper motor build. ive made a few that have a small crank on them, and then put some led's forwards and backwards across the stepper coils. with a little extra weight you can swing it around and around and make a really fun blinking led light show. i also put an old boxfan on one and it will turn in about a 7 mph wind. Im alittle curious why you used the handy little 90 degree drill adapter, and didnt put the stepper below your flywheel with a pully on the stepper direcly? looked like there was space down there. anyway fantastic. you ive been quite impressed with the voltage one can generate even without any gearing or stepping up.

Blood hell 150v that’s mental. That ripe for a transformer. That mains electricity with a few tweaks. I’d only need a human hamster wheel with a cat to make that work. £150 life time supply of electricity. Well done rob!

Coincidentally, I recently acquired a floor bicycling unit (that you put in front of a kitchen chair) for a whopping 30$ because it was open box and the counter doesn't work. I don't care about the counter and figured it could easily be transformed into a generator 😁 Step-motors are usually high voltage, low amps and tough to get going (by hand, at least). They normally last a very long time, but they're not made to spin like that, so I wonder how long it would last.

wow - that's a crazy price - awesome - I have had a few of these things apart - the bearings are good so I don't see why it wouldn't last and with out brushes I am guessing it will last longer than a dc motor

robert how much torque do you get out of this, at the "generator" shaft point to get? or a better question is how many "generator" can you put on this little shaft before it becomes to hard to spin... can you put 20?, 30? more?

@@ThinkingandTinkering wouldn't it be something worth showing? serious usable power would be around a few kilowatts 30 watts demo's a principle and it is a good concept to use, a lot of small generators, to make lots of power look at the human body, billions of cell each making a few micro watts, collectively at nominal is around 120? watts on average and at demand it can make up to around 1700 hundred when called for so i do agree with the "cell method" but then, when is the "cell method" become to hard to implement without to much effort, when does it become hard...? i do understand it would have to do with the mass, and resistance of the bearing? and how about losses do to friction? could EMF be a problem? wouldn't it be something worth showing? or at least share a few thoughts about?

I think more emphasis needs to be placed on efficiency. Generating 30W is great but if you are putting 100W into it you aren't going to be able to crank it for as long as if it only needed 50W to turn.

it's a balance between cost and efficiency really - plus I am a fat old man - there is no way I am putting 100 watts in - I would guess with my arm strength I could manage 50 watts top

I have seen old bikes on stands that turn rollers and one roller is attacked to a medium sized motor and after about 10-15 minutes excercise they have charged a battery.

If you come across an exercise bike with a digital readout, you can disconnect the digital gauge and test it to see how much electricity it is producing. I had one that I through out not too long ago, and it never occurred to me to clip and strip the wires and test it for output. I doubt that it would have been all that much though.

It doesn't generate anything. It's just a pulse sensor. The "load" on these bikes are either a belt that is squeezed around a wheel or a magnetic induction brake. No generator, no electronics really.

@@zaprodk No electronics? You clearly don't know what you are talking about. Some of those machines have digital readouts for miles, time ridden and calories burned. Others go so far as to have a complete video system on them so you can watch a trainer while you ride. It was obvious that the bike Rob took apart didn't have electronics, but the one I tossed did.

@@scotttovey Yes i know what I am talking about. We're talking about "any electronics" in the mechanical part of the basic exercise bike. The panel that counts up has a lot of electronics, scaling from a single chip (blob) solution to TV-screens etc. I was talking about the basic part that makes the friction. The signal to the electronics is usually a reed relay that is passed by a magnet, since it's cheap and doesn't use any standby power.

Not bad. It's a lot of power for this motor I think. Maybe a bit too much. Does it specify voltage, Amps and steps/revolution ?

why do think it is a lot mate? the motors I looked at are rated around an amp or more peak current - this is a quarter of that so it's unlikely to get hot - when I checked the voltage breakdown of the lacquer it was around 5kV - not sure what I missed here - what were you thinking?

i'm way off topic here but... regarding the hydrogen generators, using an air stone to bubble hydrogen and oxygen into one of those cells full of electrolyte, can they be used to generate electricity from the gas?

a silly idea, how about horse farm to power electric generator by running on a treadmill, it's bigger version of hamster wheel, since hamster don't have that much stamina...and horse eats grass, it's a green power and grass take some of carbon from the air

A top cyclist can generate maybe 400W for short periods. A fit person should manage to keep up 100W. for an hour or so. Somebody said here in the comments about harvesting that energy at the gym... If you regularly had a bunch of ten fit guys you could expect to run the gym almost! One to two KW/h. You may need to hire a guy with a whip. Edit: Generators can be very efficient too so minimal losses with careful design. 30 watts seems absolutely in keeping with a single arms power, just about exactly what you would expect.

poor little stepper. try put a hoverboard motor on it (3 phase/bldc). broken hoverboards can be found for free to 10 euro and comes with 2 motors. they are great as generator.

Any advice on where to go looking for them? I always hear about people getting them free or close to it, but ebay seems to run around $50 or more with shipping, and I never see broken ones on craigslist.

I have tried a couple mate - I don't know why folks keep suggesting them - in my experience they are no better or worse than a plain old dc motor

@@ThinkingandTinkering Wierd. I remember seing some people on YT using them in micro hydro powerplants or on home trainers to get 130-180watts in suboptimal condidions. In a small bench test of my own i got like 25-30w with minimal effort (in both energy and test setup). Your hand crank with a this motor should get over 100w. I just found your video on the hoverboard motor on the bike(1215). Something isn't correct with those amp readings. Spinning it by hand i got over 1 amp already.

That was very interesting but a bit painful to watch/listen to. Something has gone wrong with the transitions during editing , the audio overlaps where there should be a pause. It’s like trying to read a paragraph with all the full stops removed.
