This is why RU-vid is one of the greatest inventions can go back and watch old videos from past sporting moments and old football ⚽️ in particular from past eras have to love the underdog the crazy gang one of the iconic teams from the 80s 👊🏼🔥
I'm a Liverpool supporter through and through, but always had a soft spot in my heart for the Dons of yore and the Crazy Gang. In fact the team I played with in '92 we actually dubbed ourselves the Crazy Gang and played a similar rough and tumble style, and ironically won our league cup 1-0 against heavy favourites in a very gritty match where we were mostly playing reserve players because of all of our injuries and suspensions, and our 3rd choice goalkeeper had probably one of the greatest amateur performances I have ever witnessed. This and we played most of the match with 10 men when our version of Vinnie Jones decided to punch one of their players in the face and got sent off. Ah great memories.
I still go on about this now. Got very very drunk in Wimbledon village after. Couldn't speak the next day as I was shouting so much at Wembley. Greatest day ever
Some great comments about the media hating Wimbledon & the appalling act of duplicity in allowing the theft of an entire football club. Wimbledon were, for me, the absolute epitomy of the spirit of football. The heart & soul shown by such a tiny team with an average attendance of 27 + a dog, a rickity ground that resembled the nearby greyhound track, and the green stains of bile from the media & snobs from football's elite was STUNNING! How they over-achieved for so long was a demonstration in unity, passion, belief & playing to your strengths. As someone mentioned below, R.I.P John Fashanu, R.I.P Wimbledon F.C . . . LONG LIVE Real Football, and A.F.C. Wimbledon. Thanks for this.
You've confirmed my memory, Asif. I'm sure no-one on the box bothered to mention the titanic difference in finance, fan-base, talent, etc, & the fact that, against these seemingly insurmountable odds Little David did defeat Goliath by a combination of determination, cunning & sweat.
See you're missing the point of the move. Wimbledon FC was dead; the attendances dropped to below 1,000, they didn't even play in their own stadium for fucks sake. Amoungst all the chaos at the club, it was willingly sold what with the club being in financial dispair, the club would've been liquidated within months anyway. So do not jump on the band wagon saying that "AFC are the true Dons" or "You stole a club!" because both those statements are NOT true. The AFC fans that were Wimbledon fans contributed to the downfall of their own club when it needed them most.
Sean, sorry, but it matters not one iota whether Wimbledon was dead, or not (to which point, I actually agree with you). There is absolutely nothing to justify the shutting down & relocation of any club. The club was/is WIMBLEDON. A club should be allowed to be born, prosper, and, if fate intends, die in its place of origin. This action would never, ever have been sanctioned by the F.A. for any other club. We're likely to beg to differ on the morality of what went on those years ago. However, looking at things purely objectively, the whole saga has actually been the making of AFC Wimbledon, and the saving of "Wimbledon". Long may AFC Wimbledon prosper . . . and my hope is that their ambitions to finally build their own stadium in Wimbledon will not be at the expense of the old, traditional greyhound club.
+Martin Hugh Henley True they could've stayed at Wimbledon and the move to MK was not necessary. But AFC didn't save Wimbledon if anything they helped kill it as they formed before the club had even confirmed its move. I agree the move was immoral but among those to blame were the now AFC fans. They didn't save Wimbledon because they didn't even show up to games and help the club when it needed them the most. Just like AFC's formation, the other thing that came from this was giving a town a football club to support, Wimbledon had and has another club now and didn't appreciate the one they had, so now they have AFC and we have MK Dons. The club was shut down already, no one was going anymore so if the club was stolen, who was it stolen from? I understand the moral issues but I feel that only a small number of AFC fans can complain as only a minority stayed with their club at Selhurst Park. Whilst the franchising was immoral it was practical and the positives outweighed the negatives in my opinion as it gave birth to 2 teams as opposed to none.
Good day. Thank you so much for the posting match. Enjoyed of course. Bravo. Clicked the like button with pleasure. Lots of love and greetings from your subscriber. County Azerbaijan, Baku city.
Ahhhhh.... brilliant to watch! I was there as a 13 year old. Magical day, and the Liverpool fans were great to us - beers on the train on the way up, and they didn't kick out heads in on the way back. Amazing scenes in Wimbledon on the saturday, and i got my mum to let us watch the Town Hall parade on the sunday from the second floor of the Woolwich which was bang across the street. Fooking magic!
So I'm wondering, since the team no longer exists who does the fans Wimbledon support today? Did they start supporting other teams in London? I'm from America.
@@Ze_Moose Hi Muse. The team that won in 1989 still very much exists. We had to reform (as AFC Wimbledon) and playing back at our former home. Author John Green is a sponsor. I met him last week at our stadium.
I remember looking forward to the FA cup final for weeks before the game. Then there was the build up to the game and the incredible atmosphere at the old Wembley. These days clubs don’t value the FA cup anymore. The big clubs just put out their youth sides to save the best players for Europe.
That's what happens when you have a lot of European spots for the big leagues in Europe. It used to be that only the league and cup champions represented a country in the European Cup and the Cup Winner's Cup.
Krazy Gang beat Kulture Klub, classic closing line. Hardly anyone liked Wimbledon, but this was a classic underdog v Top Dog mtach up. Great drama, fairytale ending. You can dream in footy, sometimes, just sometimes, dreams do come true.
The good days before money, sky sports, bt runied football, the players played for love of the game & they weren't diving like they got his by a bus, if these players played today could you imagine what money they would be on,
As a Liverpool fan I tip my hat to Wimbledon. Definitely not a penalty. Cracking save by Beasant. Liverpool were weak in the air and shrewdly Wimbledon capitalised. That Wimbledon team was put together for pittance. Gibson at 175k was their most expensive player. Bear in mind Wimbledon's victory in 1988 was at a time, where unlike now, the FA Cup was taken seriously.
The Truth They Were In The Same League, But Liverpool Were in great form coming in to the game and Liverpool were the greatest Team in Europe at the time, it was like Crystal Palace Beating Barcelona. Liverpool were the best team in Europe, it would be like crystal beating Barcelona in the modern day. And Also He Said FA Cup Final Shocks! Not FA Cup Shocks!!!!!
Wimbledon’s kit only ever had carlsberg on it for that one game. Before, it was truman, and at the start of the new season it was something else.. strange. But Liverpool at the start of the next season had it as a sponsor
Wimbledon was founded as "Wimbledon Old Centrals" in 1889, and won the FA Amateur Cup and the FA Cup. Great archivement!!!. With a great history, in the great amateurs leagues with great honour. Big Wimbledon. well now is AFC Wimbledon. and will play against Liverpool in the FA Cup. :D
I grew up watching all the cup finals before moving to the US in 1983. I hadn’t realized that John Motson had passed. That voice is tattooed on my brain like Bob Wilson, David Coleman, Barry Davies Frank Bough and others. There’s nothing like the old FA Cup finals. Something has been lost in the game since all the money started pouring in.
Only criticism I had on Liverpool that day was i felt Barnes didn't take on the game .He had Al the skills in the world but I remember watching this game live from Australia me and many others were screaming Out to Barnes to take on players a little mate break that line .Wimbledon played smart defending really deep waiting for Any sort of fouls as Wise was brilliant in taking Free kicks .I think if Barnes played to his full potential Wimbledon would not have a chance.
Absolute fucking WONDERS by the Wimbledon keeper, what a cracking save towards the start! As a Wolves fan, we’re dirtier on the pitch than off it, and I’d be very scared if our players ever had to lay eyes on the likes of Vinnie Jones again.
From non league to cup winners in 10 years is a great achievement, just a pity the beat my team, lol. What's worse is I was at the final, a long journey home I can tell you, lol.
Didn’t Beardsley dribble the ball into the net after being fouled? The ref blew, no advantage was played and he just carried on to “score” . Just before Sanchez did?
I remember this Classic Cup Final....Fist Final I remember! Wembley Stadium looked beautiful better then what is there today the twin towers the walk out on to the Pitch from behind the goal.....small things but still nice things and the Football......when Football was Football....
What happened to Wimbledon was a complete disgrace. I know they were struggling financially but they should have been relegated to the lower leagues, just like Rangers were so they can reorganise and get themselves back together. Instead, MK were created and what have MK achieved? Fuck all!!
Notice how the referee is running away from the wimbledon players when he gives a penalty because he knows vinnie jones will come and batter the shit out of him
@@noobsaibot2856 There's a massive difference between playing like a man and deliberately trying to injure players. Brian Clough was right, some of these dirty tackles should be criminal offences.
@@Puppy-ew4be ifkr, i dont understand this obsession of calling players like vinnie jones manly or calling any other player who wouldn't bat a second eye giving a player a career ending injury just to get any kind of advantage over a player or a team for a game. Yeah, today's brand of football is cheap and terrible in its own ways, but so is this thuggery so many toxic cunts label as "manly"
Most fans other than Liverpool wanted Wimbledon to win from what I remember. I even took the day off work from Saturday job at Texas home care to cheer for Wimbledon, I’m an Arsenal fan. 1 year later we turned them over as well to win the league at anfield.
I watched this game. The violence of some Wimbledon players was frightening. The Vinnie Jones hit the Liverpool player was criminal. Nowadays he would be excluded in any league in the world.
That's the kind of stuff I miss. My local club I played for had a player like that. He spent half the season suspended, but the other half in game injuring opponents and a few times actually punching other players in the face. But he was also one of our best goal scorers so coach kept him on the team. Back then it was nothing more than a one game suspension. Today he would face criminal charges. I liked it better the old way. What happened on the pitch stayed on the pitch, and if you were too weak to take it, then you best not participate. Guys today are a bunch of pansies. There were some like that back then too, floppers and drama queens, but they usually ended up getting permanently flopped 🤣. Shit was rough. Had several teeth knocked out playing GK from boots to the grill, because I liked to come off my line back in the days when we had an actual sweeper and being a sweeper keeper was unnecessary, and dove head first at attackers like an idiot. Then I decided it was (slightly) better for my health to play an outfield position.
