In 1866, the method for making tjendol (Cendol) aka dawet, was published in the Dutch East Indies Cook Book. This is written evidence that cendol has been a part of Indonesian people's lives for 400 years. The word "tjendol" is also in a Dutch dictionary published in 1869 which shows it as a Javanese food.
I've been going to Malaysia now for over 20 years...your video shows why I keep going back. They have some of the most underrated foods. Admittedly it doesn't look that great, but put it in your mouth and WOW! You get some of the best flavors in the world. Some of my favorites that you didn't mention is Baby Kai Lan a veg dish (must be "baby" not the regular one), Butter Prawns (unbelievable taste), Chili Pan Mee (don't put all the chili in 🥵), Laksa (not the Asam/sour one), Prawn mee (the bigger the better), and Ais Kachang (I like this over Chendol)... These are not all Malay dishes, some are Chinese, but I can't find them anywhere outside Malaysia. The cultures have blended and the food is great. If you get a chance give Indian food a try, it is so much more flavorful that what you get in the US. Sharing this video with all my friends on FB that don't understand why I keep going back to Malaysia...I just got back 3 days ago from a 1 month stay in KL. May be going back again in May...the food is calling me.🤣🤣
Right? Malaysian food is SO underrated internationally. The deep flavours, the variety, the way you can find dozens of dishes on any given block. It is food heaven. We were lucky enough to spend 4 months and it wasn't nearly enough to try everything. We're also already talking about where we'll visit when we come back. Hope we did the food some justice so your friends know why you keep returning! 😂
@@hishamshah7 Nasi Lemak about 4x a week...I thought I was sick of it at the end of 1 month...what did I eat at the airport on the way out of Malaysia? 🤣
We , Malaysians are blessed to grow up eating Malay, Indian, Chinese,Thai,European, foods.N happy to share with the world, the joy n pleasures they bring.when all peoples come together we are enriched tremendously.
Greetings from Ontario, Canada❤❤❤ I was an expat living in Malaysia for few years. I agreed with you both! Malaysia has one of most diverse food range in S.E.A! I love all those foods you mentioned! Impressed with your Malay and how you pronounced the food name. Malay language is one of the easiest language to learn!
Hi Lee! Angela is from Ontario! Seriously, have you found any good Malaysian food there? We're going to miss it so much. Glad to bring you back fun memories of delicious food!
Excellent Segment. It needs Part II for these Dishes and Desserts; Nasi Dagang, Nasi Kerabu (Blue or Yellow Rice), Nasi Berlauk, Pulut Pagi, Naan with Chicken Tandoori, Rava Tosai Telur, Tosai Telur, Nasi Daun Pisang, Goreng Pisang, Rojak Mee, Ampan Balik, Nasi Kukus with Herb Deep Fried Chicken, additional side order of Grill Beef slices and assorted Vegetable Dishes, Desserts - Akok, Lompat Tikam, Jalur Mas, Seri Muka.
It's surprising that Malaysian food isn't as well known around the world because it is so so good! Great to discover new dishes in this video. Those giant prawns look amazing, and we'll definitely have to look out for that golden tofu! 😋
Hi! Seriously, there should be Malaysian restaurants on every corner around the world! Yes, don't miss the prawns and golden tofu. When you find it, I'm curious if you love it as much as we did, let us know!
@@PureDetour I know right! There's a laksa place in Sydney that I was addicted to - the curry mee version. Yeah definitely not as ubiquitous as Thai or Chinese. yes we'll definitely let you know when we manage to hunt down those dishes. yum yum!
Malaysian food use a lot of local fresh ingredient and spices that are difficult to be available in other country. I think that's why Malaysian food is a bit difficult to be replicate in country outside Malaysia. For example, the Assam laksa, without the fresh ginger flower this laksa doesn't taste the same.
We feel like you could eat in Malaysia for a lifetime and never get bored. You are so lucky to live in such a foodie paradise! Thanks to all the Malaysian people who were so welcoming and patient in explaining all the amazing food to us!
Thank you for coming to Malaysia and promoting our food. There are many delicious food that you need to discover in Malaysia. Just come to Malaysia and you get to taste Malay food, Chinese food and Indian food. Thank you for this video. 🤗😊
Hi! I think you could eat your whole life in Malaysia and still not taste all of the delicious things to eat! Thank for watching and for your nice comment!
We were lucky enough to spend almost 4 months in different cities and feel like we learned a bit about the cuisine. But I feel like it's such a vast and varied cuisine that we could spend years and still not know enough. Hope we get the chance to come back one day!
@@mohdzaki1089 It will have to wait until our next trip, we have to leave because of visa. But we're already planning to come back to explore more. So much to see and eat! and we love surprises!
Malaysia is a secret gem. We don't overpublicize, overcommercialize & oversell ourselves like some other SE Asian countries. Only those in the know are aware of Malaysia as a haven for many things including food, and many pristine beautiful untouched tropical islands. Foreign tourists planning to visit Malaysia for first time know next to nothing what to expect of Malaysia. Until they set foot in our country and explore it themselves!😊
@@byteme9718 Find the damned fact yourself! I ain't no damned secretary of yours! You want pristine islands, you do the damned search yourself! Goddamn it!
Couldn't agree more with all the food you chose and thankyou for showing this to the people. As a malaysian, the thing that we miss the most when travelling to another country is definitely our food. And i hope it will be the same for both of you. Thankyou again
Oh wow, we weren't sure if people would agree, so it's fun to see someone who has similar taste to us. We will certainly miss the Malaysian food, it's unbelievable the taste and variety. Like nowhere else!
Thank you for your efforts promoting Malaysia food🥗🍲🍨☕🍖 to the world and hopefully Malaysian will try to create more good food in future to all travellers visiting Malaysia.... Bless you guys 👍👍👍👍💖💖💖💖
Asam laksa is probably the best of them all. The mixture of different flavours and textures, and each flavour and texture can be tasted separately, yet combined so well. Amazing.
Wow thank you for showcasing such a wide variety of our local cuisines. I hope you get to try even more dishes! PS. I'm so impressed with how well you pronounced all the names of our dishes!
We loved loved loved the food in Malaysia, it was our pleasure to try such a vibrant and diverse cuisine! We did our best to pronounce properly, and hope we didn't butcher the language too badly. Thanks so much for watching!
Glad you two tried all of these. A few of them doesn’t get the recognition they deserved from other tourists. Also love your description for each of the food, simple yet very informative. Your pronunciations are impressive as well. Good job!
Geoff and Angela .. well done on the coverage of the food in Malaysia. You guys show so much passion and love in your videos … you should be made food ambassadors for Malaysia. Geoff you are right I hardly found any Malaysian food during my visits to North America ..
We have read that too! We haven't tried much siu yuk outside Malaysia, but I'm worried that we started with the best, and now we'll be disappointed anywhere else, lol. Oh well, guess we'll just have to come back! 😂
@@PureDetour haha exactly! just like durian once you have tasted the top range you will not go for so called lower grade! Glad that you guys enjoy Malaysia food scene!
So true. We've only had the chance to visit a few cities and we're already in love with the country. We can't wait to come back to see more of this beautiful place
Malaysia is trully asia..hopefully you can try more foods in Malaysia..especially like Nasi beriani..Nasi Dagang..Nasi Kerabu....Nasi Ambang..Ayam percik..Nasi Goreng Ayam..and many more..and the best to time is during Ramadhan@muslim Festive season..you can find so many delicious foods and deserts..thank you for your very nice video and information about Malaysian Foods..#haveaniceday
Thank you so much for the nice comment! We did try many of the foods you mentioned and it's all delicious! We really could have made this list easily of to 50 dishes long! But we didn't want to make a 3 hour video 😂
@@TuN77, Good point, but I think we would need to make a 4th video to cover all 50. Then another 10 videos to begin to cover what we have not even tried yet. 🤣
We only have the Malaysian people and their hospitality to thank. The star of the show should be Malaysian's, they did all the work.! We only babbled like idiots about how much we love the food. Malaysians are the star of the show in our minds
Thank you so much! And thanks so much to the lovely Malaysian people for feeding us so well. Not only the food, but the people in Malaysia were so amazing!
@@PureDetour I hope you’ll return to Malaysia and try to plan around the first few weeks of Hari Raya because that is the time most festive food is bountiful.
There are so many version of laksa in Malaysia. Every state you go, you can get laksa but of different taste.still the main ingredients are minced fish broth...and all the condiments.
Hi Meg! Big country with so many unique regions, we will have to come back one day to visit different places and try more foods! Sarawak and Sabah are certainly on the list for next time!
@@PureDetour Peninsular Malaysia is just as big as Florida but the variety of food is tremendous here! not to mention the variety of food in East Malaysia as well
Negeri Sembilan has a variety of masak lemak cili api, yellow gravy with smoke duck, smoke beef, smoke cat fish, smoke burung puyuh, telur itik, rebung with perut lembu, cendawan, siput sedut, sambal tempoyak daun kayu dll. We also have a different kind of rendang called rendang maman and rendang kerang. Yummy. Mak ai terasa lapar pulak. Cheers
Everyone keeps saying that! We have left Malaysia now due to our visa expiring, but we would love to come back one day and explore different areas, these sound amazing!
I lived in the states for five years during student days and also stay with my foster parents, therefore I tried varieties of western food. Never would I imagine that someday Americans would love Malaysian food as it doesn't look good as it taste 😀.
Hi Syed! It's funny you say that, I think that almost anyone would like Malaysian food if they have an open mind and give it a chance. There is such variety in the cuisine that there has to be something for everyone, right?
That's fair. I think that more and more people all over the world are now more open minded and willing to try new cuisines all over the world. Outside of Malaysian food, what is your favourite cuisine?
@@PureDetour I would not say cuisine but the food I missed so much. 1. Christmas Coconut Grated Cake. I tried once but it is unbelievable. In Malaysia we use varieties ways of coconut in food and desserts, but grated in Christmas cake is beyond my imagination. How on earth a tropical coconut land on American cake 😀. It is so good. The other one is Gyros (Greek Food)
That's your favourite? We have tried durian in a few different ways since we've been in Malaysia. It's a very new experience for us, as north americans, but we like it! But it's not as smelly as people say it is 😂😂😂
Nice video... Thank you.... Malaysian people very creative in cooking... Alter foreign foods to meet malaysian taste buds is one of our specialties... Maybe you able recognise some food had similarity with western food with more flavours... Have a safe and happy journey ahead.. 👍👍👍
Hi! Thank you so much for the nice compliment. We still feel a bit awkward on the camera so it means a lot to us to hear you say that. No, we never worked in TV or anything like that, we just started this channel in September 2021 and have been practicing. It gets easier over time I think.
Having grown up in Ipoh and now living in TN, I thank you for these videos! I yearn to find a way to do what you do and get out of this corporate grind. But until then, I am living vicariously through your travels.
Hey Andrew! You're in Tennessee now? Bet they have good BBQ there, but it's not the same as back in your hometown I bet. Glad to bring you happy food memories!
Few more to try are ikan patin masak tempoyak (it has durian paste in the ingredients) and all the salai/masak lemak cili api dishes. Those are distinctive taste as well.
So much more to try, I think you could eat for a lifetime in Malaysia and not try enough. We hope to come back one day to see places and eat food that we missed the first time!
Norhaslina! We didn't try it with cockles, but that sounds so good. We have had to leave Malaysia because of visa, but if we come back one day and go to Kelantan, we're messaging you first to take us to the good food places!
I heard this before I arrived, but really didn't know how true it was until we came here! It's really a special place to eat, so much variety and quality and everyone here is crazy about food. Malaysia is our kind of place!
Eating in Malaysia was 100% our pleasure. And the Malaysians love for food just shows in how generous with their time they were to explain and prepare this food to two clueless foreigners. We'll never forget the people and food here. 🇲🇾❤🙏

It's just amazing how food is everywhere in Malaysia. You're lucky because there isn't that variety and passion in the food culture everywhere. And it's so fun to try the same dish from different cooks. Thanks so much for watching!
This is such a surprise to us. Knowing how passionate the Malaysians are about their food we were expecting a lot of comments telling us how wrong we were. So glad that we had the chance to spend 4 months exploring this beautiful delicious country and get a good feel for the amazing food they have to offer. We'll come back one day to visit new areas and try more delicious food. Maybe we'll make an update to this video then. Thanks for watching!
Next time we visit Malaysia we will certainly visit those areas. We loved Malaysia so much, but really only got to see a small part of it on this trip. So much more to see (and eat! 😂)
HI! We did a few fun fruits at the start of our Kuala Lumpur video and tried durian a few times too! The fruits are lovely here. Thanks so much for the nice comment!

Malaysian living in the states . Tq for visiting our country .I'm heading bk to kl in December for a holiday n can't want to hv all of these dishes.malaysia truly Asia.
You should also try Nyonya food. Nyonya cuisine is out of this world. It's complex and refined. Best Nyonya food can be found in Penang and Melaka. You can try Lin Neo or Nyonya Lin's Kitchen by Baba Ricky both in Kota Laksamana, Melaka. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks to the beautiful Malaysian people for feeding us so well! 🙏🇲🇾 And for taking the time to explain their wonderful cuisine to two clueless foreigners 😂
Thanks for watching Andrew and thanks to all of the gracious Malaysian people for being so kind and patient with explaining and preparing these amazing dishes for us!
You're very welcome, but we feel it us who should be thanking the people of Malaysia for their warm hospitality and delicious food. We honestly did nothing here but eat the best food we could find

I'm really enjoying this video 🙂 I'm still in Morocco, met some very nice Canadian's today that are on a huge motorcycle tour. Only one month to go until south east Asia yay Thanks for posting ☺️
You're on right track to come in malaysia next month. Starting 23rd may is ramadhan where muslim celebrate fasting for a whole month before eid. There'll be bazaar ramadhan sort of food festival for a month all over the country and you can find hidden food gems. On side note careful. You might get a food coma.
@@ma-rc7sw Hahah, we totally already understand the food coma already. Unfortunately we have had to leave Malaysia due to Visa expiring and we're off exploring a new country! We will come back to Malaysia one day, but probably not this year. But it sounds like a lovely time to visit ❤
Relative to other nations in South East Asia, our population is quite small. Hence the Malaysian diaspora overseas is also quite small. That explains why you don't see many Malaysian restaurant overseas.
Malaysian food is exclusive and premium, if u want to eat just come and visit to Malaysia.. Never same like the others food.. Never found or sell at other countries.. So special.. Only made in Malaysia..
YEP. Foods in Malaysia is not like in certain countries when you can get the best in short period. You need to explore the whole states then you can find hidden gems. Unless there's a local suggestions.
Anyway please ignore Suhanjaya Lian comments. This culprit always provide provocation & racism comments in every channels regarding Malaysia. Indonesia is Indonesia. Malaysia is Malaysia. Every countries have their own unique & way to shape em. He wants to 'Indonesianizing' Malaysia. He needs to move on.
Yes, we always ask locals for suggestions, it's so fun to explore and try to find your favorite. And there is so much more of Malaysia we haven't seen yet! Looking forward to coming back one day to see more!

@@PureDetour oo really..thts good..i think both of you need to the gym as well while you are here as you gonna put on a lot of weight before you know it😂
John, i have been in the Philippines for almost two months now. my next trip to Malaysia will be to Sarawak and Sabah. And to be honest, my teh drinking will be cham. If not cham it will be kopi before I ever order teh. Also, Teh, kopi and cham C are available everywhere in Malaysia
I've never eaten stingray before! How would you describe the texture? Similar to fish or something else? I think that anything in Asam Pedas sauce would be delicious, right?
Yes! We keep hearing that we must go! We have to leave Malaysia because of visa, but one day we'll come back to see the places we missed on this trip. So much to see (and eat 😂) and not enough time!
Wow! So many more dishes you still haven't touch. Thanks for the tips! This was just a comparitive list for torusits to try when they come to Malaysia. I was in Malaysia for 4 months and limited myself to 15 for this list. If I listed everything that I loved, this video would have been 6 hours long😀
If you like extremely good fried rice or fried kuey Tiao go to Sin Nam Hong Cafe in George Town just beside Komtar its an old cafe & the owner has been doing this for 25 yrs
Love this video , as a malaysian we proud about us food but we also like to hear more , like n dislike so we can learn more , for example this dish Assam Laksa malaysian love it but always give difference view other people or foreign , its like durian
Hi! Malaysians should be proud of their food, it's really something special. I'm surprised to hear that some people don't like Assam Laksa, it's my favourite! Durian on the other hand, I can see how some people aren't crazy about it. I think it's OK, depending on the variety, but durian isn't something I NEED to have like the Assam Laksa. To each their own I guess, right?
Wah ! You are both epicureans ???? I am malaysian and also a diabetic; so i have to watch what i eat !!!! I really do envy you. Selamat Datang ke negara-ku !!!!
You're very welcome. And you are correct. I spent 4 months in country and had to limit this video to 15 dishes or else the video would have been 74 hours long
Impossible in my opinion. But we listed 15 that we thought tourists would appreciate and get a nice introduction into Malaysian food. A cuisine that is HIGHLY underrated.
