The Cologne cathedral should at least get an honorable mention. It's massive, it took centuries to build, and it even has the ruins of part of the Roman city in the basement.
Hagia Sophia is a Greek word. Hagia means Holy, Sophia means Wisdom. Holy Wisdom. Arabs didn't turn the church into a mosque. The Ottoman did, and Erdogan did.

Nobody can claim to have seen them all - or even a quarter - but among the most awesome cathedrals in the world I count Cologne, Strasbourg, Reims and Albi (the only one in bricks but just as voluminous as the others). Milan’s Duomo is also quite a sight to behold.
@@MeesterJ That’s very true. Chartres lies in a plain with no buildings or geographic landmarks. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Strasbourg’s cathedral is surrounded by narrow streets with 4-5-6 storey high houses so this incredibly impressive structure is only visible as you literally stumble upon its forecourt. Same with Brussels’ magnificent Grande Place. Invisible until you get in it.

The Lord Jesus Christ thinks they are worthless. The Rotunda church in Mosta, Malta has the third unsupported dome in the world. The design of the church is based on the Pantheon in Rome. It was the site of an air bombing during world war II. A bomb fell right through the dome and did not explode.
I was a guard for 25 years in the Pantheon of Rome (what Memories i can tell you!) And One day during a chat someone from Malta told me about the air bombing of their church, it's incredibile! The Pantheon's dome too Is unsupported becouse dont have any internal skeleton.
As a French from the country which invented gothic and which has the most cathedrals , i can say the Sevilla cathedral of Spain is the most impressive and best to visit
The 'reconquista' was not Catholics recovering Spain from the Moors, it was Christians reclaiming Spain for Christian Europe. At the time of the reconquista, the Reformation had not yet taken place.
The reconquista was undertaken and completed by "Their Most Catholic Majesties" the Kings and Queens of Spain over a 700+ year period. Martin Luther was 8 or 9 years old when the reconquista was completed, so it most certainly was the restoration of the Catholic faith in Spain.
St Sava Temple ( Church of Saint Sava ) in Belgrade is missing, also Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow or Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. Make part two !
Because they are "Anti Pravo Slav". Pravo Slava = Orthodox Christianity. It literally means "True Glory" and predates both Islam and Catholicism. It was the faith of the Greco-Roman Empire, as decreed by Emperor Constantine, who founded Constantinople. Slav is a derivative of "Pravo Slava Vera".
My friend was one of the carpenters who built Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and his mark is still hidden on the back of the altar. Feels strange seeing it amongst these, but it is an incredible experience, especially when singing, transcendent.
@@Alfred5555 yes, I used to like to go when it was quiet and have a little song of praise, the acoustics are phenomenal. I think it is also the biggest non-catholic cathedral in Europe, but people build and it's a long time since I checked.
@@debramoss2267 If not the whole world, but it's unique Anglocanism is worth recognising too. I still almost always visit when I go to Liverpool, atleast the park. I love how you can see that brief moment in history when Liverpool was the centre of the Victorian world from America to India, with the cathedral being built well after that time had passed, but almost like a crowning recognition of its history.
@@debramoss2267 I imagine you fit in like anyone else by now, Liverpool had that long history of port town, mixing all sorts of people together in no time at all. I have a friend, born in Peru, raised in southern Spain, moved to England 7 years with hardly any English, now today you wouldn't know he wasn't born and raised in the city.
He's talking about the wrong cathedral in Liverpool. The one he is describing is the Catholic cathedral which can be seen in the distance (looks like a big teepee or rou d tent) and not the one in the video which was built 1800s early 1900s.
And then there is Lincoln Cathedral in England, which was for a while the tallest building on Earth, having been the first to surpass the Great Pyramid of Giza, and had its tower not collapsed, would have remained so until the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889.
Spot on, I Wiki'd my memory. Started 1072 (yes us Brits are old and we can build stuff, so can the French but don't tell them) earthquake in 1185 rebuilt to be tallest in the World at 160 meters ( 525 Feet for the Americans ) The the Spire collapsed in 1548. (no nothing posted on Reddit !). I remember how spectacular the flying buttresses and the size of the Rose window and how cold it can get. I was a Choir boy and sung (tried to) in Lincoln Cathedral, If you visit have a look for the Mouse carvings. Thank's EdMcF1 I can see Liverpool Cathedral over the water from my gaff, it may be larger but not spectacular as Lincoln.
At 12:52. OMG, a modern church interior that I actually like! I was dreading seeing the interior from the plain exterior. But, wow, am I pleasantly surprised! It doesn't look like an overglorified office building cafeteria. It doesn't look like a church was put in a parking lot with some white walls. This is a wonderfully beautiful interior. It's riotously colorful, but also graceful. It uses the enormous space to full effect, with those huge mosaics under the dome shimmering so brightly. The mosaics themselves are also so delicate-looking, and proportional. Love that there is this electric blue tinge underlying most of the mosaics and the space itself. Truly a sight to see! I would love to visit now! Reminds me of the breathtaking modern interior of the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona.
This beautiful church you liked is in Brazil, my country. I also like the interior of the church. The thing I like the most is that the painting is contemporary but still looks sacred and holy. It doesn't look like you are in Starbucks like everything modern today.
"Duomo" is another italian word for "the most important house of God in the town", so a Duomo is present in every city that can afford it. BTW, this list is so approssimate; the Duomo di Firenze, Florence's chatedral, is bigger than some of these church and his dome = Cupola it's the biggest of the world!
Inaccuracy about St. Peters Basilica. St. Peter was not the founder of the Catholic Faith, it was Christ himself. (Mt 16:18). St. Peter was the first pope.
Yes, Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is more than just "worth a visit." But then I am a native of the fair city-hopefully not biased by this. Also, about 1000 yards away along Hope Street is the more modern ["circular"] Roman Catholic Cathedral-not to be overlooked by visitors.
Not only is there the Liverpool Anglican cathedral and the metropolitan cathedral, not a cathedral but a church however is the bombed out church, a church that is completely hollow in the middle
@@carharrttrbx2530 You are referring to St Luke's church some 1000 yards from each cathedral. It is a monument to the city surviving the WW2 Blitz by the Luftwaffe. Well worth a visit : it has a website which is most informative. Thankfully time has mitigated the terrible memory of such attacks on our city-and the likes of Jurgen Klopp [LFC manager] have more than just helped the healing process.
Liverpool cathedral is also home to the heaviest complete peal of bells rung full circle in the world. It’s almost easy to forget the scale of the bell chamber. Two double decker busses could drive in a circle around the bells and a garden shed looks like a toy! I agree it’s well worth a visit. It’s a large cathedral built on a grand scale even during the Second World War the building did not stop. An amazing statement for the Liverpool people.
I attended Liverpool Cathedral's completion service as an air cadet (1128 Sqn). I remember the day very well, mainly due to the kid in front of me not being able to co-ordinate his arms and legs whilst marching, tripping me several times.
I didn't know middle eastern countries still tolerated us middle eastern Christians, I'm so happy! I'm an Assyrian roman catholic, and every day I wonder how my homeland would be, but it has been torn by multiple events. I wish to see it one day, flourishing!

Until the late 19th century Salisbury (404ft) had the tallest spire, It was a decision of Kaiser Wilhelm the second to give Ulm its spire to wind up Queen Victoria.
@@oceans6515 At 157 m , the Kölner Dom is the tallest twin-spired church in the world, the second tallest church in Europe after Ulm Minster, and the third tallest church of any kind in the world. It is the largest Gothic church in Europe and has the second-tallest spires. The towers for its two huge spires give the cathedral the largest façade of any church in the world. @@LadyDragonsblood Hun, maybe you could try googling Seville Cathedral instead of reading a guide book. Have a great day, and yes it should have been on the list!
There a lot of modern being building around the world today but nothing can compare with the stunning, marvellous and full of details from the churches architeture from Europe
Aya Sofya isn't important for its size and decoration, but its architecture. It's the first building with a dome in history, and a model for practically every church and mosque since then. It's really underestimated even by Greeks for the sake of the Parthenon, which is actually not so hard to build.
What happens with the Koekelberg Basilic Bruxelles? Or the Cathedral from Cologne? Or St.Pauls Cathedral London? Or Stephanadom Vienna? Or Cathedral Straatsburg? I missing a lot of big churches in this video
suprised to see Liverpool Cathedral and not St. Pauls Cathedral which although over 300 years old still ranks as having one of the biggest unsupported domes in the world.
Liverpool is bigger though. The Roman Catholic cathedral there was supposed to be even bigger but was scaled back due to ww2. It’s still got it’s original crypt though which is huge.
well you can't argue with statistics. Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is biggest in U.K. there is another Cathedral very close by, the Catholic Cathedral known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King. both are sperated by a short street called 'Hope Street'. both are worth a visit when in City of Liverpool.
Not all -St Paul's in London was built by Anglicans and the big cathedral in Berlin that looks like it was built by Lutherans. Many many examples of cathedrals built by Protestants but generally speaking the biggest and most opulent are Catholic as that religion sets more store on that type of thing.
Again, it is sense of faith we wish the very best to home our Lord. Poor parishioners with monetary help from their bishop, have the same sentiment, their own homes may be most simple, but as they contributed to the beauty of their church building, they are proud and share in its beauty and honor of their Lord.
@@jurgentreue1200 Also the beautiful domed Frauenkirche in Dresden -destroyed during World War Two but rebuilt. Then there are the vast Protestant cathedrals in the U.S.A.,Canada and Australia -like St John the Divine in New York and National cathedral in Washington,St Pauls in Melbourne.Riverside Baptist church also in New York City.

As far as I know, the tower of the Ulm Münster is the highest of any churches. Probably that'a why it is listed. But this shortlist is a bit weird anyway. That one church on SA looks like a train station. What about Cologne Dome, the largest north of the Alps. Or the Dome of Speyer, the largest church in Romanesque style in the world?
To put things into perspective, Angkor Wat in Cambodia is still the largest religious structure ever built and is still being used for religious purposes today. Number 10 is known as Anglican Cathedral of Liverpool, close to the Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral. The architect is Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, not just 'Gilbert Scott'.

Funny story about St John The Devine: They had peacocks on the church property and one day someone stole one of them. But the next day they bought it back because it was too loud.
The Basilica of St. Joseph in Montreal, Canada deserves a place here. It is one of the largest in the world, also, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico.
One thing is evident. The more modern of these churches that try to imitate or mimic the classical architecture of the past do a woefully inadequate job of doing so.
