Instead of paying about $6 for the embossing buddy, I put cornstarch in the end of a knee-hi stocking that I had a run in. Just knotted it, so it has a little handle. Works fine. DIYing it=priceless!

I am one that likes to re-purpose things and recycle things. I took my empty laundry soap pod container and cut the top off and use it for my crafting waste can. It is small enough to put on my table and I had it on hand anyway. Helps me to spend what little money I have on more important supplies.

Starting up can be expensive. Buy an awl instead of a branded pokey tool; a bag of cheap make up sponges work as daubers; cheap men's shaving brushes blend inks beautifully and finally, chop up pantyhose and fill with cornflour or talcum powder to make anti-static bags. Love this video and everyone's suggestions.

Amen to starting up!! Also, never forget DOLLAR STORES!! IT'S ALL $1, DOLLAR TREE. I have found some of the best crafty supplies, storage,mediums, and surfaces at one of the Dollar stores. Also---in the past 22-23 years, since meeting my current husband & raising 2 sons, HARBOR FREIGHT, HOME DEPOT, LOWE'S!! I LOVE Harbor Freight. Have found so many fantastic buys there--crafty things, again. The things I use may not be branded, but I'm not sponsored with free items to try, or compensated. SO I use what I like or can $$.

The stamp positioning tool SAVED ME! A bought a MISTI first and then a Stamparatus because it has removable hinges that you can use to do crazy cool stuff with. Before I had one, I would waste so much time doing things over when I didn’t stamp a clear image the first time. It was always impossible to line it back up 🤯😤🤬. Now, that is no longer an issue 😃🥳🤓

Baby wipes or microfiber clothes are a crafting must-have. Great tutorial and ideas for the newbie, JD!! 😃👍🏾✨
@snowmangrandma
@snowmangrandma 5 лет назад
I was just at a retreat and learned that baby wipes can leave fibers on the stamps which, eventually, can cause them not to stamp the best image. I never realized this or paid attention to it until learning about it and they do leave fibers or tiny "pills" (like pilling on a sweater). They said the best thing to use is a "shamy" or a stamp scrubber (like Stampin' Up has or similar). Just wanted to throw that out there!
@ItsMeJD
@ItsMeJD 5 лет назад
Wipes are a great crafty tool ( I get the costco size, and haven't noticed fibers yet). I also have the shammy and I always *intend* to use it (if I can ever find it, lol)

A game changer for me was getting a magnetic bowl to put metal dies in when I'm in the middle of a project and just need a place for them to go before tidying up. I got mine at walmart in the hardware section. It's meant to hold things like screws and bits. It's a metal bowl about 5" wide and has a VERY strong magnet on the bottom.

I love your tips & videos! Here's one for you. Another idea for an alternative glass mat is to use Cricut transfer tape! (I like that brand because it's sturdy.) It already has a grid on it. I just cut off about an inch of the backing sheet on each side, then stick it to my crafting desk. Wipes clean every time & if it gets too icky, I can easily replace it. Thanks for all your money-saving tips!

I absolutely agree with every one of these supplies. I’ve been crafting for over 20 years and all these things are so useful. The only other things I would have added are....coloured pencils, heat gun, baby wipes and a cheap paint palette, not just for paint but I find it handy for storing embellishments or brads etc while you are making your project. Great video.😊

Baby wipes! Game changer for me! My hands stay a lot cleaner than using microfiber towels. Might be a bit more expensive but my stamps get cleaner, they’re handy and easy to use and I don’t have rainbow fingers all the time! Love your videos, JD! 👍
@nonamason2642
@nonamason2642 4 года назад
Do you use a stamp cleaner as well? I bought Grandma's to try one out. It has done well. However, it does build up and dries in between use. So when you spray it again and go to clean a stamp you get a lot of ink residue, which I wipe off with a baby wipe. From time to time I have to run it under some warm water and mild dish detergent, and it is ready for use again. I still have rainbow fingers, but not as bad!

This was awesome!! I’ve collected lots of supplies over the years for scrapbooking but I just recently started card making and I love it! I even joined Crafter’s Companion’s monthly card making box subscription and every month you get a kit that makes approximately 20-25 cards using new techniques each time. I’m building up my die stash, paper stash as well as flowers, pearls, etc to decorate the blank card bases; and, each month I’ve learned a new technique from water based pens, to 3-D cards, to metallic pens, and the list goes on! It’s been lots of fun to learn! 💜

I use a toothpick that I’ve put Tombow Mono adhesive on the end of and let dry. Because the adhesive dries still tacky, it is the perfect jewel/sequin picker tool and I didn’t have to pay a dime. I’ve been using the same one for about 6 months and it’s still working great! I also swear by swiffer duster cloths. I have a swiffer hand duster, and I clean everything with it when I’m done with projects. It cleans up glitter, embossing powder, little teeny tiny bits of paper from trimming or die cuts, cat hair (oh, yeah. The struggle is real), everything. Lint rollers are great, too.
@patcontant9284

I use empty cereal, tissue, food boxes and bread bags to put my paper and two sided tape bits into and then straight into their recycling bins. I also use a square plastic pencil case to put my unwanted die cuts in to for future projects or accumulate and then donate to daycares. And of course a garbage and a little brush and dust pan. My craft room floor is hard wood and until I can vacuum, those items work like a charm!

Hi JD. A tip I learned the hard way. When working with delicate paper, the blue painter's tape can be too strong (unless one remembers to play with it the way you do). I found the yellow Frog tape a great one to use on any soft/thin paper. It also does great on my Thinlet dies. Thanks for the video.

That makes sense, CAT, I purchased the yellow Frog tape where I needed a no-bleed outcome on a clay pot surface and it was a huge disappointment! it has lousy adhesive qualities, so using it on something softer/thinner makes sense. I'm glad you said this because now I have a use for it - the stuff is a bit pricey for me to not be using it. Thanks for the tip!

The garbage can was a great idea as well! I was using a big garbage bag hanging from one of my storage bins on wheels. And the multi power strip was a great idea, even though we have a few around the house, in the craft room is a great place for one! Great video!

The misti stamping tool. I didn't think it was necessary, but now it is my most used next to the paper cutter.

I LOVE intricate die cutting. It took me too long to get the precision base plate, and a Spellbinders tool n one. If you use a sizzix machine, I hugely reccomend both of those! Great video!

I purchased a car wash Shammy from Target and cut it into a bunch of pieces. I keep a few pieces wet at a time and switch them out as they become full of ink. They can be washed and reused-no more baby wipes.

I have my ribbons stored on cards, so when I unroll them, they have creases in them. Simple solution: instead of getting out my iron, and needing space to iron out the wrinkles, I spent $3 at a yard sale and bought a flat iron for hair. Warm it up and pull the ribbon through the hot flat plates. Easy-peasy!!

Great video JD! Thanks for sharing your products and ideas. I pretty much had everything else except the power outlet and the rhinestone picker-upper thing-ee, which I have now placed in my Amazon cart. Thanks again and I really enjoy your videos, techniques and ideas - please keep 'em comin'. Sending prayers, hugs and love to you and your family. Happy Crafting!! Carla

Just came across this video. :) I LOVE my Stampin Shammy to clean stamps! You can just buy a car chamois and cut it, but I've had one for several years and while it looks awful due to staining, it still cleans the stamps beautifully!

Great video! Raising hand for dumped glitter jar :-) I would say an adhesive eraser and a Tombow eraser are must haves, especially for newbies! Though I still have glue splooges and ink smudges, there are not as frequent as when I first started. I threw away so many almost-finished projects because of unsightly glue or smudges! Wish I had known then how easy that was to fix. I can't live without my Misti either. I had to stamp yesterday without one (too lazy to bring it upstairs from my designated crafty spot on the couch to the craft room for one sentiment). Yeah, should have gone down for it. Took me 6, count 6, tries to get a clean stamped image.

erasers, yes! I always tend to just cover it with a sequin because I can't find my eraser. and love the misti too!

Great video! I’m super surprised, I’m spot on. The only item I don’t have and didn’t know about was the white gel pen. This whole time I was using white paint or white puff paints. Thank you ! I’m going hunting ASAP. Funny thing is, I have two trash cans on each sides of the room. A large one for any packaging trash after shopping hauls.

I had bought a huge roll of blue painter's tape before and started using it to position my dies, but sometimes it was too sticky. Thank you for the tip of de-sticky-ing it a little by tapping in on my skin first.

Yes, agree with so many of these. You're so helpful and honest. I truly am grateful for being a subbie. JD, have you done any craft storage videos, like, what furniture works for what? I've been dealing with a 2 person crafting area for quite a while. I really need to organize and create a space that works for both, yet doesn't look like a crafters mess when not in use. Thank you for any suggestions, you or any of your subbies may have. And please dont suggest that giant crafters box cabinet. If I have 3 grand I'd of already bought it.

I have tried several (over a dozen, easily) different jewel pick up-tools and I have found that the absolutely best is something that I made myself; little bit of blue tac on a toothpick or a skewer. Recently I found out that Im not alone, many diamond painters like it better too. And some wax based pickers leave residue to the gems, my blue tac gerryriggind doesnt. I highly recommend it.

Hi JD, Are you ever coming back to RU-vid? You were one of the very first card makers I watched on here. I was definitely learning most of my info from you and viewed so many of your videos but didn’t realize that you stopped making them. You are very excellent in explaining everything and demonstrating your ideas. Wish you were still a creator here!!

A light box! I found a small one at Walmart. It is helpful for the dry embossing with brass stencils (in days before emboss folders). Also a variety of ziplock bags. I use square and rectangular snack bags all the way up to gallon sized. Also, freezer paper, Glad Press n Seal, and foil. You wouldn't believe what these kitchen staples can help with! Bent, straight, and reverse tweezers! No words needed, here!

I really love the bamboo boxes they have on Amazon that hold all these different bags as well as rolls of foil, press and seal. It is a box that can go on the wall or in a drawer. The best feature is the blades that cut perfect pieces of foil or cling wrap. No more trying to undo big wads of cling wrap for your projects.

art glitter glue is so awesome and I think should be in everyone's stash. I asked people for a long time which glue to use and tried everything but when I purchased the art glitter glue I never use anything else. It has a small point and you don't waste any glue and it aim is so precise. tfs your list I had most of them but will definitely get the surge stopper. You have so many good ideas good tutorial.

Everytime you use your cricut mat wipe it down with a babywipe that is 99% water ( no alcohol). It picks up all of those tiny paper pieces and lint and really extends the stickiness of the mat. Thanks for the painters tape tip. Great idea!
