My parents come from the south of Italy and have been living in the north for 30 years. They have shared with me the main differences between northern and southern Italy!
Who knows the difference better than them?

The sterotypes we have been sold in USA is much more that of southern Italy, which kind of makes sense because the majority of immigration to USA by Italians came from the southern regions of Italy. Little Italy in Detroit was known as Little Sicily in the late 1800s and early 1900s

So basically a quick summary a very good summary I mean is that the south of Italy basically is really conservative vs the north has more like liberal. The north is all about modernization versus the South us all about traditions and family culture and values mostly. Also I feel like the Catholic church has a very strong grip over the South compared to the North.

no, no one is against modernization, the question is that since the unification of Italy there have been a series of countless events that have meant that southern Italy was unable to keep up with the economy of the north, the church itself allow has nothing to do with it.indeed if we want to put it all the political parties of the "right", therefore the "conservatives" are voted more in the north than in the south

@@ignaciomondragon99 all wrong, pretty lady. The “Germanics” destroyed the old Rome and brought the “dark ages” on to Europe. “North European” wealth is historically a very new thing, only about 5-600 years. Everything of value comes from the south! PS-I love your lovely Greek name! Στεφάνια! Means “crown” in Greek language.😉😉
@obabas80
@obabas80 2 года назад
@@ignaciomondragon99 look, I love you Italians, but do you think the “Greek south” is over-exaggerated? Many also believe it is UNDER-exaggerated! The greatest cities of southern Italy (Naples, Syracuse etc.) were founded by ancient Greeks. These areas were HEAVILY colonized by Greeks from various parts of Greece. There was even a point in history where many historians believe that Magna Grecia actually had a higher population of Greeks than mainland Greece itself! No, no one discounts northern and italic influence in the south, but there is also much southern influence in the north as well (genetically speaking). Believe it or not, the majority of Sicily and southern Italy spoke Greek as the main language and were Greek Orthodox as recently as the 1300s! This is because the eastern Roman Greek speaking empire ruled those areas for a very long time after Rome fell. The “Latinization” of these areas are historically speaking, very recent (7-800 years about). Check out many southern Italians and Sicilians dna tests on RU-vid, most commonly they are majority of Greek DNA. Anyway, I’m not here to argue about Greeks vs Italians, both are European and great! And no, maybe the Greeks had cheese baked on bread before the Italians, but you guys added the tomato sauce! 😂😂
@obabas80
@obabas80 2 года назад
@@ignaciomondragon99 The Italian peninsula was the center of the Roman world, as such, many came and went. Of course, there is even “Nordic” influence as far south as Sicily, as evidenced by the “looks” some Sicilians have. Italy is a blend of peoples. Nothing wrong with that. Greece as well. Both are two sides of the same Greco-Roman world and the two pillars is western civilization. My Greek surname is an Italian derived one being my ancestors were from Crete, which is an island that the Venetians controlled for 500 years. It comes from the word “Vero”, meaning truth. Many Greeks have Italian derived names. We also share the same blood. For fun, I took one of those DNA tests. It came back as 17% NORTHERN Italian. The rest was Greek/south Italian. The south Italians have Ancient Greek DNA, so similar to ours that the company groups Greek and south Italian into one category. Regular Italian is its own group and includes northern Italy. Very interesting stuff. Take care Bella!

Pretty accurate except for the holiday part. I'm from northern Lombardy and I don't know anyone that goes on holiday in southern italy on a regular basis (my parents went to the south only once or twice, pretty late in their life) and some people even have never been to the south in their entire lifetime. Most northern italians go on holiday in the mountains (Alps), abroad or in north-centre italian regions like Liguria, Veneto and Emilia Romagna. There are also a few people who never saw the sea!

So basically northern italy is more americanized. Southern Italy is more the stereotype people think. I feel like there's a good balance to have here. It's nice that Southern Italy is laid back and remembers the importance of family get-togethers. With that said, if a lot of Southern Italians go North for job opportunities, there's something to be said about that as well.

Hi Gabri Ele, thank you so much for your comment! Please allow me to say this, I am of Italian decent, my parents are both of southern Italian decent, my mother is from s icily and my father is from pulia. They immigrated here to Canada, from very humble beginnings. Now, after many years of hard workings and many sacrifices, they have achieved many goals that perhaps not all native North Americans have been able to . They both have height paying careers that required years of education to acquire. They raised all four of us , each , of whom are university graduates and have never been involved with lewd or illegal matters. We are all property owners and are contributing members of our society. Allow me to say, I thank my parents for instilling the wisdom of the Mediterranean culture in us . Although we are southerners we hold very strongly to our traditions, dialects, beliefs , morals and religion. I wonder if the Italian Northern society were to perhaps change perspectives, they might see that the south of Italy is in fact a flower of Mediterranean culture and heritage. Beauty is in diversity, the Northern people are beautiful and have their unique beauty but so too does the south, with much love.

Separately, there is Sicily that belonged to Carthage (today Tunisia and part of Turkey) invaded by the Romans and when it dissipated it was taken by the Arabs although it was short-lived due to Ostrogothic pressures (Germanics) and in the end the Normans (Germanics) prevailed over said territory. You're gonna get a lot more confused or unsure expressions if you try to be esp. friendly/outgoing north of the Alps, esp. in certain locales of Germany, Sweden, Poland, etc. That doesn't mean that Germanics (and Slavs) are more unfriendly on the whole comp. to Mediterraneans, it just means that it often takes a while for the average Nordic person to open up to you... Pewdiepie excluded, that guy is quite friendly, yes. 😁😁😁😁 2.) Since Northern Italy is more Germanic than Southern Italy, thats where/why you get some of those differences... 3.) Germans in particular DETEST criticism, I have found, esp. criticism directed at German culture and stereotypes. And ESPECIALLY, anything having to do with the four letter N word... For obvious reasons. They will not tolerate it (criticism of German/Germanic traits, etc.), not one little bit. Again, since Northern Italians are much more like Germans, you'll get a bit more of a "scrutinizing" sort of look if you lay into the comparative unfriendliness of N. Italians compared to S. Italians... Not just because of the putdown. You'll get a degree of frostiness and social reserve, as opposed to the generally more fiery, emotional, temperamental south... Of course S. Italians will likely not want to take things too seriously, and may find these different national and regional qualities more humorous than most. 😁😁😁😁👌👌👌👌👌 Its a different sort of deal obviously if you are talking to a generally more pleasant, understanding, mature, and patient German, etc. person, someone who knows you better as well, and the nature of the conversation/subject matters revolve more around things that are not so much qualities found more commonly in Germans, but in the person themselves, etc. As for everyone else, I dunno man, that would take too long to explain in this comment at least...

It is also important to mention the amount of people of southern origin living in the north--they outnumber people of northern origin. You are not going to find any proper cultural traits or habits in cities like Milan, Turin, or even Venice. If people want to get exposed to proper Northern Italy, your best bet is going to either very rural areas or areas with little industry, and thus places not affected by internal immigration. This is not an insult to Southern Italians (and those of southern italian origin) - they have a nice culture, but people need to understand how much Northern Italy has changed since massive, uncontrolled immigration from the south started in the 1950's.

I don't even speak Italian that well, but Italy doesn't feel like a foreign country to me because my grandma is fluent and we have lots of relatives in Italy. When I actually go to Italy, it feels like people's decor and style is quite similar to my grandparents in a way I can't explain. Gotta finish learning Italian and brush up on what I knew. Also, as an American... I don't think northern Italians are as crazy busy as we are.

There is really no similarities besides language, and Italian is not the native language (Lombard, piedmontese and Sicilian languages are native) what makes northern and southern 'italians' different is many things: 1) genetics; southern Italians have east med influence, northerners are celto-ligurian. 2) approach to work and organization. I don't care how controversial it is, northern Italian societies are far more organized and better run than in the south. Although most northern cities are full of second/third generation southern Italians. 3) families, southern families are definitely more old school than northern Italian ones. This can be a good or a bad thing. Overall, northern Italians are more influenced by the Alps and west, southern Italians are more influenced by the sea.
