I love Malaysia... I can honestly say that Malaysia TOPS my list of Favorite travel destinations on earth. The capital, PUTRAJAYA (next to KL) is especially beautiful.
Seriously this is the best video of Malaysia. Everything is on point! I was laughing a lot especially when you mentioned the funny way of wearing a jacket for motorcyclists. I never thought it would be weird to other people. another thing you might have missed is motorcyclists putting their handphone in their helmet near the ear so they can talk hand free! Regarding the local tourists getting excited with souvenirs, you are right! but only those who come from far away or from the countryside as it is not easy for them to come back again. and there is this common practice of bringing souvenirs to those who are left behind which could mean the whole village. Hence the active purchase of sourvenirs. Thank you guys for your kind words. Yes we are eager bunch of people who would go out of our way to make sure you are experiencing the best of Malaysian hospitality and we are honoured to have you here on Malaysian soil. I wish you all the best and hope to see you back here again. There lots to see and do. Till Malaysia chance upon you again, terima kasih( accept our love) dan selamat jalan(have a safe journey).
Not just countryside. Many Malaysians have this habit telling their extended family/co-workers on their vacations, and the souvenirs also been given to their family members and colleagues. I don't do that (haha i am not nice) but my officemates most of the time do that to me.
And another reason malaysians make sure the tourist has a great time in Malaysia is because people across the world look down at malaysia, so we want the tourist to come back to malaysia (something like that) ahahahahaha😂😂😂
Your 2nd fact is a little wrong. Malaysia has 13 states + 1 federal territories. That's why in the Malaysian flag there are 14 stripes and the 14 pointed star. Out of the 13 states, only 9 have their own royal families, which will take turn to become the king of the country every five years.
sogekingable 13 states + 1 federal territory as stated by the original comment is wrong. I am correcting a little of that statement. There are 3 federal territories, all under the administration of the federal government. The administration center was originally in KL before it moved to Putrajaya during the tenure of Dr. M. It remains, though, as the capital city of Malaysia. And Labuan, as you said, is an economic hub. Especially of off shore activities.
I'm a Malaysian and I was watching you talked about my country. You got a new subscriber here! You are such a wonderful vlogger with positive vibe... Keep on posting and have a good travel...
About Malaysian hospitality there is one time an Indian guy from India asking me about some toys for his kids at toys r us. He assume me as worker there. I told him that I'm not. But eventually I take him around and show him the toys. I thought that I was the only one who were kind enough to help but yes maybe u are right Malaysian people love to help.
About your comment on the language of Malaysia and how many of the words are very English-sounding. Because the country has been at the cross-roads of the maritime trade routes between east and west for many centuries, the language has absorbed vocabulary from many different cultures. Southeast Asia, including what you now know as the Malay Peninsula, in the past had been very much culturally Indianized. What is now Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and the southern Phillipines and southern Thailand then became Islamized converting mostly from animist, Hindu and then Buddhist belief systems. Although Malay is an Austronesian language with many ancient basic root words that haven't changed much (for basic concepts such as numbers, fire, water, father, mother, etc) that you can find in similar related languages spoken as far as the Phillipines, Madagascar, Indonesia and Pacific islands, a great proportion of older Malay vocabulary is derived from contact with Sanskrit, Tamil and various Chinese dialects. Islamization starting in the 12th century saw an infusion of many Arab and Persian words. With the coming of the western powers during the European age of exploration, the Malay language began absorbing vocabulary from Portuguese, Dutch and English. You mentioned "sekolah" for school. The term "sekolah" was a converted loan-word from the Portugese "escola". This is similar to the other Romance languages e.g. French "ecole", Italian "scuola", etc - sorry if I'm misspelling as I don't have the European character sets on my keyboard. The British colonial period saw the absorption of many English words into the Malay language and due to the continued importance of English as an international lingua franca, many Malay words see the replacement with Anglicized versions. For example we have a traditional word for "business" that is derived from the Sanskrit word for commerce which is "niaga" but nowadays we see a lot of times it is substituted by "bisnes". I personally don't see why we need to do this but that's how I suppose languages evolve. By the way the "porijj" one I think is just an attempt at creative wordplay from a marketing person for that food company. The correct word for porridge is bubur and no one in their right mind would use "porijj" :)
OMG thank you so much for taking the time of explaining this, it's so interesting and I love when "our" channel becomes everyone channel and we can exchange information and knowledge, seriously, thank you with all my heart!!!
Not sure if you remember me but I was the one who first told you that anyone could visit a mosque outside of prayer times. Glad to see you've learnt a lot about the country and many of your observations are spot on. Very perceptive. If you have other questions you can always message me and I would be happy to provide you the perspective of a local. In truth you have become a very good ambassador for Malaysia through your vlogging. This inquisitiveness and enthusiasm should be applauded.
Of course I remember!!!! At least half of what we know is thanks to you and all the people that are commenting and giving us so many tips and info about Malaysia! Thank you so much for all the nice compliments, I soooo much appreciate! :)
I'm laughing while watching this video's, thanks for the generous comments for Malaysia. we really love to hear if the visitors love our country & please come again to Malaysia.
Lessilu if u ordered food and u don't want onions and garlic, and the food still come with onions and garlic, actually the problem is the waiter forgot to tell the cook or the cook forgot that u dont want the onions n garlic.
Malaysia is actually more than those 3 races mentioned. There are East Malaysians from Sabah and Sarawak (Borneo) with Orang Asal (indigenous) Iban, Kadazans, Bajaus, Murut, Dayaks etc., not to mention the aborigines (Orang Asli) from West Malaysia itself.
Yup, there are lots of other "full" cultures in Malaysia besides Malay, Chinese and Indian. there are hybrid cultures as well like the Straits Chinese, Kristang, Chetty and Jawi Peranakan.
garlic and union is practically the base ingredient in our cooking.. most of Malaysian dishes have a hint of garlic or onion.. hahaha.. anyway, i hope u enjoy our food :)
this is what u see in your eyes, actually if you go more rural areas we call as perkampungan so many delicious food there. im working as oil n gas person, all around the world ive travel, but for the food my country is a heaven... this is true.
at the time of globalisation, the deepest root culture of malaysia is begining to fade away. its a relief when you still able to get some of them. you are a sincere explorer.
Psssst!!! @7:44 The Malay(sian) word for school is “sekolah”, it came from the Portuguese word “escola”, meaning school of course. NB: Portugal was the first European power to establish its presence in the Malay Peninsular when it colonised the then Sultanate of Melaka in 1511 and stayed on for the next 130 years (1511-1641).
Nice video! Happy to hear that you have enjoyed your stay here. Hope you come again in the future : ) It would be really hard to have food without onion and garlic, especially the onion. It is mandatory for Malaysian food lol so even if you already specified that you don't want any in your food, the chef or the cook would probably too used to not put them. Those two are usually the first thing you put in so it would be very awkward not to have them. The shopping mall lol I myself sometimes are sick seeing malls are being build everywhere! But yeah since the whether here is really hot all the time unless it's raining, it is convenience to have shop lots located in air conditioned malls. Walking outside is just a torture lol The souvenirs! it is like a custom or tradition that we bring something to the family, friends, relative, colleagues and even neighbors whenever we go on holiday or go visit places. Yes, even the neighbors hahahaha Key chains and t-shirts are the usual stuffs we bought. I can say that we travel within the country a lot. We go to different states to taste the food, visit places etc. since we are relatively a small country but every state are unique and have different attraction in terms of the dialect used, the food etc. Almost every state have amazing islands and beaches and historical spots. The short distance + different attraction, give people sort of valid reason to travel. And yesss everyone is like family to everybody here hahahahaha unless you are in official situation, you can just call the elderly pak cik (uncle), mak cik (aunty), or literally anyone kakak/kak (sister/sis ) and abang/bang (brother/bro) unless you can see them being a lot younger than you then call them adik/dik (for both genders). Another name to use to call the owner of the shop/stall is tauke or the waiter at Mamak restaurants, bos. So, don't be shocked if you hear people calling someone a boss when ordering drink or any other names stated. That is just the way Malaysian connect with each other =)
try to visit waterfalls (air terjun) in Malaysia such as Sungai Gabai or Sungai Congkak in Ulu Langat, Air Terjun Pelangi (Rainbow waterfall) in Sungai Lembing, Pahang, Sungai Chiling in Selangor. There's a lot of hike and river trek there
You made me want to cry...😢 Thank you & Vincent for visited Malaysia. 🙏 We hope to see you & Vincent again in the future, probably with your children and maybe even your grandchildren. 😘 Next time, you can also try to stay with the tribes in Borneo (which is located in East Malaysia) or have a home stay at a kampung (traditional Malay's village). For your reference: 1) Homestay with the Malaysian tribes www.bordersofadventure.com/staying-at-a-longhouse-in-borneo-experiencing-indigenous-sarawak/ 2) Homestay info in Malaysia thesmartlocal.com/read/kampung-malaysia 3) A bloger's Homestay experience with the local www.adventureswithfamily.com/kampung-dorani-malaysian-homestay/
Sweet Jasmine, thank you so much for all the love, your comment is so touching! We will definitely come back and will always bring Malaysia in our hearts (btw there are still some videos coming up about Malaysia)! I didn't even know about the possibility to stay with tribes in Borneo, this is amazing!!! We did it in Vietnam and it was wonderful, so we will totally do it in Borneo too! Thank you so much!
Lol! I was giggling all the way till the end😂😂😂That was extremely funny! I luv it😍 *AWESOME!* Keep it up Alessia! Send a big hi-five to Vincent! Bye...
Love all of your fun facts!! I am a Malaysian and am very happy to know that you are happy visiting Malaysia. You have really mastered interesting facts about Malaysian! ;-) The only thing is the 9 states info..its actually 13 States and 3 Federal Territories(Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan). But, you nailed all other facts pretty well. Love your video and have just subscribed to your channel. Have a safe travelling around South East Asia!!
Thank you, Alessia and Vincent for all those amazing videos about Malaysia, I watched them all. No.9, not just you, even we as local, it is very normal for restaurant to mix up or forgot the remark of the order. BTW, I agree with No. 10, we really hope and want everyone that visits Malaysia to enjoy their time here and we wanna make our country proud as well. Hope you will come to Malaysia again to explore other interesting small towns.
Thank you so much for watching Victor! Hope you'll like to keep following us and watching also other amazing countries that we are visiting! Will come back to Malaysia for sure! :)
thank you for your beautiful comment about malaysia. In the same time u are promoting my country to others. Come visit Malaysia again, we r welcoming all tourist from around the world to visit my beautiful country MALAYSIA❤
to be frank, some of the facts are not accurate, especially facts number 2, but I still respect it because from what I see, you got all your answers through your own travelling experience, self learning and self observation, and not by searching from Google or Wikipedia etc. for this, I give 10/10. salute and please comeback here again. thank you.
the greatest F(un)act I've ever seen so far. you're the first one who talked about the reversed jacket, buying a lot of souvenirs and so on..you got the good eyes.. i like it and enjoy watching this Vlog.. thank you for visiting Malaysia.
You got that spot on bout Guinness, one of the best Guinness brewery outside of Dublin is in Malaysia, a little ironic since its a Muslim country. But I'm not complaining, Once you go black, you never go back. Cheers Alessia !
Muslim are not allowed to drink liquor but muslim also are not allowed to prevent non muslim from drinking liquor or selling or making them, same goes to pork and cigarettes. We are still allowed to tax them, so it is a win win. Of course extremist would say otherwise.
And another fact besides that we call uncle, auntie. We also call friend to someone at the same age that we don't know. We also call boss to mamak or person who sell things. Just try to say it when u want to buy food. Example: boss teh Tarik satu, roti canai satu 😄
as for fun fact #06 and #07. I believe that you're seeing Malaysians or locals that have not visited the tourist spots or places that you're visiting. And the other thing is the "Selfie-Culture". As for the statement "they became strawberries themselves", that's probably the "kawaii-Culture" related to "Selfie-Culture".
Thank you so much for the fun facts about Malaysia.. The fun fact that i love is the way malaysian motorcyclist wear their jacket.. hahaa..actually i'm wearing like that too... 🤣🤣🤣🤣.. when you mention about that, then i realize why i'm wearing like that?? 😅😅😅 ..
Malaysia is not very popular for Southeast Asia backpackers, and you have definitely help other travelers to think of Malaysia not just as layover destination!! Lot of loves for both of you for exploring and posting videos on our country!! Am waiting Port Dickson vid now. Also now watching your Luang Prabang videos, coz planning to go there next month!!!
I don't understand why backpackers don't visit Malaysia as much as they visit the other SouthEastAsian countries, its the BEST country! :D ohhh so nice that you'll go there, let me know what do you think about it! You must visit the waterfalls, are amazing!
OMG fact no.12 is so true! I'm am a malaysian and basically that is how i address people, it is so easy to call them aunties or uncles. And when i went to study abroad i realised how weird it was to call older people aunty and uncle and they gave you a weird facial expression - like who the hell are you to call me your auntie?! LoL then i realise, it is such a malaysian thing! Maybe singapore too? Idk
actually Malaysia has 13 state: (nine hereditary malay ruler state - Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan) and (four non malay hereditary state - Penang, Melacca, Sabah and Sarawak) maybe what you are refering are the Malay Peninsula. BTW love your video
Hola. Ja, vlog finally here. When Alessia gesture "Fact number 9. Why are u doing this?". Time for everyone to leave the planet...ahahaahaha. Had so much fun following. So so much luv to both of u like the taste of the durian its so difficult to describe. It got stuck in the head like the crazy music from Pen Pineapple Apple Pen, took me a week to shake it off. The candles and flowers in Bali is just super amazing. Kram.
Ciao!!!!! ahahahahaha was I scaring? :P you will see us trying Durian ice cream pretty soon!!! ;D ahahahahaha the Pineapple Pen song, it got stuck on us too! ahahahah Oh Bali is sooooooo stunning! can't wait to share it with you guys!!!
I love this video! all the facts is right😁 and you really understand the country before you make a conclusion about it. and u really respect to our culture 🙌.
Thank You lady for the value information , about Malysia and Malysian people , how amazing this country I feel as if I will be there , thank you so much.
funny how we Malaysians have this ask me look but when it comes to people asking "is there any question?" most of Malaysians will be quiet although they are dying to ask the question mainly because we are afraid our questions sound silly. it's a habit we need to break though. anyway, i love your facts! it's really fun!
What a nice facts about Malaysia, I'm from Sabah, Malaysia. I would love to suggest you to visit Sabah (north borneo) of Malaysia, a lots of stunning places to visit !
Not only that, as sign of respect (and also it is also convenient when we don't know their name) we also address someone older as abang (older brother) or kakak (older sister) and someone younger as adik (younger sister/brother)...
You probably find it funny because modern Spoken Malay uses a combination of vocabularies from many different languages. The ones you probably will recognize came from English, Dutch and Portuguese, only with localized spelling. However, Spoken Malay also incorporate many words from Cantonese, Arabic and Hakka. Also, sorry about the onion and garlic thing. If you eat hawker food, they generally have no idea how to cook without onion or garlic. Malaysian food generally must have both.
Hi Lessilu, thank you for visiting Malaysia! As Malaysian im really happy to see tourists that came to Malaysia and went back with happy and amazing experiences. If it happens you and Vincent are visiting Malaysia again, let me know here, i can treat you guys with some Teh Tarik. heheheheheheh
haha, thanks for this. you say Raja correct the first time. you are Spanish speaker right? so most Malay words, you can pronounce the same as Spanish, except letter J is like English J, C will be like English CH (chocolate) and the Spanish C is K in malay. believe me, you'll sound like you speaking Malay normally compared to native English speaker, they'll sound funny with the accent. haha. thanks for coming to my country and hope you'll come again!
Did you went to Putrajaya and Malacca? If yes, hopefully we can watch the video soon. Anyway good luck in your travel and thank you for visiting Malaysia :)
As a Malaysian I never realize it until u said it in fact malaysian people always giving more help than what u ask for . Hahaha this is really cool right ? XD
A lot of the words in Malay come from Portuguese. You mentioned the word Sekolah (school) - this comes from Escola in Portuguese. Another example is the word church which in Malay is Gereja. In Portuguese, it is Igreja.
hi lessilu.. the videos are sooo amazing. i like 100% how you described malaysia. you even described the little tiny things such as the souvenirs and moto jacket. well that's not something tourists would noticed i assume. hihi.. i hope for the best in whatever you do. you guys are such a sweet couple. :)
YES! I am a Malaysian and i have experience this many times! When i order something that i dont want it spicy, they give me the item spicy! So whenever i order the item, i have to repeat my order after the waiter has taken everyone's order. This happens usually in mamaks (indian coffeeshops)... :(
I always watch your video..but this time, i really need to leave a comment! because it is so funny when you called Vincent your voice sounds like Donald duck "Vincent " it's so funny.. 😂😂
no15. kiss is alright in public area but hopefully not 10-15mins french kisses lol. The sign apply specially to our muslim friends even though we are a muslim country but we respect a lot to each others specially to non-muslim. I would say malaysia is one with most freedom among the muslim countries in the world. no.10 was so true lol somehow we just worried if you are lost or wont get the best out of it. Your are a beautiful and positive minded person for sure, enjoying the fun side rather than the other.
about the onion and garlic haha i have to agree on that. you see when you eat at mamak/indian restaurant usually the waiters are not from malaysia. they're mainly from india/nepal/bangladesh. so there will be a slight langguage barrier. believe me we malaysian encountered the same problem to when we eat at mamak restaurant. we asked for this food but then came along other food. at first you will find it annoying but as time goes by you'll get used of the problem. that's the funny side of malaysia i guess. 😆😆😆. but i hope you will come again and explore malaysia more. good video btw. you are a smart traveller
The malaysian language specifically is called 'lingua wacana' which is a mix of arab, indian, chinese, english and whole lot of other languages based on our history until Ican't remember how many because there's a lot, I think we take portugis's language too.
Hello Bridgette! Thank you for watching! we actually have been to Sandakan, Sepilok and Selingan! You can see the vlogs in the playlist Malaysia! Hope you'll enjoy them!
about the pronoun-cation and spelling, we malaysian borrow some words from english, arabs, indian, chinese, dutch and etc.. we make it our own words and interpretation... somehow it is really normal to us
tiket is quite highly-recognizable word in Malay and Indonesia, you can even buy many kinds of tickets from a site called tiket.com (maybe only in Malay ?)
LoL.. bout onions & garlic. Not only tourist hv problem with that, we in locals also smtimes faced the same problem coz the waiter r not locally frm Malaysia (mostly frm india or east country) so they not really understand 😁 sometimes we hv to make sign language too if we had too lol
hi miss, great to watched ur video review on ur trip in Malaysia. but i think u missing one of the best beautiful place in Malaysia, both you should go to Sarawak, Malaysia (the one state in borneo , Malaysia). both you will find beautiful nature, yummy exotic food and others interesting thing there..
is it wrong or any have problem with that? ya la, swk one of the state in borneo.. borneo island is not belong to malaysia only... include brunei and indonesia too... what ur problem?
