Cutting off your breast and taking hormones to grow muscles does not make you a man. They are living a lie and there are, obviously, people in their lives helping them to live that lie. But despite my opinion, I really am not bothered by this. I could care less what a grown adult does with their life. Their choice does not physically hurt me. But I draw the line when this is done to children. That is purely insane. Even if a child really believes this crap, they can wait until they are of legal age -- an adult -- to mutilate their body. Your years as a child are nothing compared to your years as an adult. A drop in the bucket. If by the time you are a grown adult, you still feel the need to do this to your body, then go ahead. Despite the 'success' stories out there, there are many who have regretted doing this and have committed suicide because of it. It depends very much on which age the masc transitioned to femme. Depending on when a person could transition fully, and pay for the full transition, those of modest means have a harder time of it until they are older. The previous generation, who are already middle aged, or in their 60's, masc to femme, struggle a bit more with body image, and passing effectively. Since the age of 18, is the legal point when a young person can consent to more radical, and permanent transition, it's usually very effective. Also, the actual body TYPE of the person makes a difference too. But hormones, and living in the other gender as early as advisable is better for the transition to be more complete. You raise a fair question, but that's the reason why. As we speak, states across the country are creating laws to ban transitioning at all, and based on misinformation and bigotry. Which will only make the process unobtainable when it's best to start. Nothing worse than laws based on fear and ignorance, instead of actual facts and scientific results.

Or is it that you readily see/hear some people who are not 'doing' their chosen gender well? I think the people you are seeing who seem to be trans-women are just not doing the women thing very well. (Vica versa for trans-men.) Surely there are trans-women who are transitioning so well that it no longer occurs to you that they might have once been men? I've met one such woman, before she was finishing the trans process and I would never have been able to tell she was born male if she had not told me. A lot of it has to do with the voice box and its size. That's usually where you notice the difference first. There are some hosts on YT channels who have never mentioned being transgender but sound like the opposite of their appearance. I was really confused with some of them at first and thought they might be putting on a cartoon-like voice until I realised that this is what some Americans actually sound like! I no longer judge people by their voices. I've met quite a few cross-dressers (NB not the same as trans but the example still applies) over the years (at some funky parties put on by some very open-minded friends). Some cross-dressers made a real effort to get into the character they wanted to be. Others looked terrible. Cross-women whose makeup was awful and hadn't shaved anything and had dressed really badly. (Just the same as the rest of us! Ha!) Until boys and girls hit puberty they actually have almost the same body strength, endurance and stamina. So many just don't realise this still. It's society (and mostly parents/grandparents or other parents at school) that encourage kids to act or feel like a certain gender. And they also make them feel 'wrong' if they are not dressing/acting like their born gender and this is often reflected in the way their kids tease these other 'wrong' kids. It's unfortunate that after puberty so much in our bodies change, including upper strength differences for men and women; and much lower strength and stamina women have when they are menstruating. Everyone has the right to dress and act and talk in the way they feel is genuine for them (so long as it's not nasty or inciting others to be hateful/cruel, etc). I actually don't think some people would feel such a deep need to try to make themselves seem more acceptable as one gender or another if we accepted them exactly as they are REGARDLESS of their gender. We're all different types of people who all have our own struggles along the way. Accept people as they come; whatever they want to wear; however they want to do their hair and makeup. See the REAL person WITHIN and get to know THEM individually. If we accept and value people individually I think there'd be a lot less trauma and people feeling the need to change anything. They could be just AS THEY ARE and still be BEAUTIFUL and WHOLE within themselves if only the rest of us were willing to see them deeply and genuinely. It's time for us all to stop being so superficial and judgmental. There are tonnes of people all over the world (particularly on social media) who spend so much time on their outward appearance and having all the right 'things' in their lives. There's nothing wrong with wanting to appear well, healthy, presentable and have some nice things. But imagine the difference in the world if all these people decided to CULTIVATE their MINDS just as much or instead of things which don't last for long? Imagine if we all focussed on the things that are really important for the longevity of our humanity and planet? Imagine people working really hard to be better at how they think and value others? Imagine people valueing integrity and honesty above appearance and ego? Imagine what a change could be made that goes far beyond gender-reassignment?

I agree that people, mostly, are born with a certain DNA. I also agree that no-one should encourage people to think about changing themselves based on a feeling. But see my comment posted a moment ago for a fuller explanation of the following:- I think the fundamental reason people don't feel 'right' in their bodies is because we put pressure on 'girls' and 'boys' to act/feel/look a certain way. If we took away that pressure and accepted people for WHO they are (not HOW they look or behave) I don't think we'd have nearly the same amount of people wanting to change their gender.

I think it was a Feudian slip, because a female can NEVER become a male; every cell in her body contains XY chromosomes. Same with men. You can cross-dress and multilateral yourself, but you cannot change from a woman to a man or a man into a woman. I think low self esteem is contingent on people wanting to transition .
