The absolute audacity of the BBC having a video about casual sexism that includes clips about equal pay when only last year one of their own news anchors had to sue them for equal pay!

Some of these examples were not "casual" sexism, they were explicit, aggressive sexism.

My grandmother is currently 93 and obtained a degree in chemistry. She remains one of the smartest women I know. Unfortunately she was not able to get a job in her field because she was a woman. She taught school for many years. I’m sure that she touched many young lives but being prevented for doing what she truly loved because of her gender....that’s a lesson that has stayed with me.

Some of this sexism is hardly "casual."

What strikes me as ironic is that Phyllis was facing the same issues as the "libbers" she opposed; she approached it from a "conservative" viewpoint. Seriously, the same issues!

This is great but I'd love to see something like this set in the present day, with the same kind of scenes. I think most people would agree that things have been bad in previous decades but these settings give a sense of it happening 'way back then', as if it's all fixed now. Happens a lot with racism on tv too. It's like they're worried the viewers will feel attacked if they hold a mirror up to them.

The number of times Phyllis shalfley had incidences where the era would have helped her in the first episode followed by her being against it is enraging!!!

Asking someone to smile is not sexism. HE was smiling. Asking someone if they wanted to start a business is not sexism. Arguing about who is going to pay for law school is not sexism. I have seen other clips where men's abilities to care for children are openly mocked. Were these attitudes sexist against men?

This is sexism, yes. But some of it is also just a failure to connect with another human being, especially on a basic level. Of course women want to make the same as their male co-workers. Is it success to compliment someone on their work and success they use their skill to create an independent self-owned business as a woman entrepreneur? That's not sexist or patriarchal. And we all know that men are encouraged to frown and look grumpy on TV talk shows. Just turn on to a major network at night and it's nothing but frowns, right? All those gloomy, frowning TV hosts looking sad and not wanting to have fun. Plenty of the other clips do depict men being insensitive jerks and even showing chauvinist anti-woman prejudice. But the political bent of the show is clear when the Women's Libbers are not once shown as being frustrating. Even if you're on their side, they could test one's patience as well as any casually sexist male boss. There was plenty of intolerance, extremism, sexism, and prejudice on both sides of this debate. Plenty of women who really _weren't_ for the freedom for women, but only wanted women to be like them and disparaged anyone who freely choose something else. There were _vicious_ divisions among feminists about sex, the value of men, homosexuality, transgenderism, pornography, marriage, violence, political philosophy, authoritarianism, socialism, the proper role of government in resolving the issues of their movement, and many other issues. But sure, the really annoying things women involved in gender politics back then faced were men telling women to smile more, complimenting them on their domestic skills, and encouraging them to start their own businesses and become financially independent. In real life, no matter who you are it tends to be positively received when someone admires your smile, your cooking, or encourages you in business. They're compliments. Women faced greater challenges and restrictions than being complimented too much. To depict mere compliments as insidious oppression is to depict women as weak and privileged to not have significant problems. Phyllis Schlafly would never have admitted to being upset that someone said her baking skill was professional quality and could be used to launch a successful business. Who wouldn't want to be told that about their baking? Perhaps some of the truly frustrating more radical feminist women who disparaged any traditionally feminine or domestic skills like baking and were proud to be incompetent in the kitchen. Though baking is really traditionally neither masculine nor feminine in association, especially among professional bakers. People who actually bake, men and women alike, want people to enjoy their baking. That's why they serve it. It's good to learn that people enjoy your baking. Most of these clips are not abuse or even harassment, although most are uncomfortable and some demeaning. People nowadays still make one another uncomfortable all the time, but we do generally avoid doing so in these particular ways which we now recognize as to be avoided.

The real Phyllis is tremendous and this show was such a hit job because they’re mad she beat them at every turn. RU-vid the real Phyllis debating ERA on firing line to see why they can’t stand her. The fact that the show didn’t even give the real arguments against era when cate blanchet said she studied Phyllis is proof they wanted to mischaracterize this fabulous woman. She’s literally a hero.

Casual sexism? Depends when the film was set. It might just be classical historical accuracy. Something we see increasingly little of as people try to wallpaper over the past. Boy I'm glad I saw it all with my own eyes and know how things really were in the days before manufactured/non existent 'history's.

The solution might be to have a lot more men born gay. Genetic biologists are studying all that. Another approach to consider is allowing women to carry concealed weapons, while reducing the penalty for homicide by a female defending herself from male sexism to a simple citation-level misdemeanor. In the interim, we should drop the Mr, Miss, Mrs and Ms, and replace it with Mx. Lass and Lad similarly replaced with Lax. So many ideas, so little time (to fix all this in time for the next PC outrage, still in gestation, as yet unborn)!

Nothing in the world is more threatening to the fragile male ego, then an intelligent, articulate, competent woman with a strong will and a sense of purpose.
