if you've been watching the channel for a while then you know that i have a HUGE love for film and fashion (it's basically the entire reason i started making these youtube videos). i wanted to try a different kind of video that was a little more opinionated, and i wound up with this! considering how many films have been released in the last hundred years (and will be released in the future), i wouldn't be surprised if some of my choices change, but for now these are my favorites (when it comes to clothes, not in general). obviously it's just my opinion, so if you disagree that's fine (just don't be mean about it ok). what movie has your favorite costume design?

here's a lovely piece of trivia for you. When Madonna performed Vogue in her Marie Antoinette look in 1990, one of those costumes came from Close's portrayal of Madame de Merteuil in Dangerous Liasions. If you have never rented this film, it's a gem from 1988, and you can find the scene where it came from! Close gave it to her, they went into rehearsals, and boom! A piece of VMA history was made just 2 years after the film debuted. It's a wondrous movie and Madonna killed it back when MTV still played (and had a lot of fun with) music.

it'd just be movies set in the 2010s tbh, i find most of the outfits so boring 😅 i miss the days when the lead characters had clothes actually made for them, not just something off the rack. even if it's a "normal girl" you could just stick a sewing machine in her room (and never actually show her using it) and the audience would make the connection that she probably makes her own stuff/alterations. i at least wish that costume designers used more vintage/thrifted pieces, considering even in modern times that's such a popular way of shopping it could make for really interesting looks.

I actually liked the choices of outfits in that movie, as someone who has lived in both North America and Asia I feel they really depicted the difference in fashion really well. In the beginning Rachel was dressed in a way that literally screams "American-born Chinese". And gaudy outfits of her friend's family clearly tells audiences who are familiar with Asian fashion that their family was dressed like the typical "new-rich", which gives so much untold information about their status and class in society.

The author of Memoirs of a Geisha Arthur Golden interviewed Mineko Iwasaki and used her life story for the novel. Iwasaki later sued golden having cited a breach of confidentiality and later sued and settled out of court. Iwasaki later wrote Geisha A Life which I strongly recommend reading.

He didn't really use "her" story. The action of the book is set much earlier that Mineko's lifetime. She was mad and embarrassed that he published their secrets (like young maiko's virginity being bid on and sold to the highest bidder). She said this was untrue but since then it was confirmed by independent interviews of other elderly geisha

If anyone who have read mineko's book know that mineko personality is hatsumomo. She is despicable, she tried to break off married man and told him to divorce her wife and child. This woman is vicious as shown from the way she treated arthur golden. Arthur golden book is more accurate than mineko biased filtered book. So yeah please do research. Mineko dismissed the mizuage when it is actually practiced, and how did she even cheated with a married man without having sekx . Mineko the faker. I truly hate people like her who take advantage of people's view Mineko literally feel like Amber heard, yeah at first people believe johnny deep abused amber, and then the truth comes out.

I read the book too after the movie. The most difficult part was the main roles are played by a Chinese and a Taiwanese actress'. I own it. It is beautiful and tragic. Understanding though the history of these two countries? I wish it was cast differently. Maybe for this reason, Curse of the Golden Flower might deserve a higher ranking? I was impressed that you mentioned, House of the Flying Daggers. Another beautifully dressed and written movie. I would add the most recent movie version of, Sweeney Todd. Helena had amazing costumes, so did the supporting cast. Another wardrobe that tells the story to me. I own most of the movies on your list. The Shirley McLaine one I never heard of but will try to check it out. It does look amazing.

This is probably my favorite channel now. Warning: Emotions. I'm a trans woman who transitioned pretty early, like 12-13. I'm 28 now, and these videos are helping me remember something about why I loved movies (specifically movies that centered costume design) as a kid. Something about clothes helps us visualize identity, put it into material terms. Thinking about fashion and dress helped me understand the kind of woman I wanted to be, and try to come up with a vision for myself that I could be at home in. So many of these movies-- the period pieces, the wacky comedies, the fantasies-- helped me "try on" different sides to myself while I was still figuring out my gender. Flash forward, I'm 28 now, depressed, overworked, underpaid. A lot of the time I dress just for pragmatism. But this channel has helped remind me of the magic of "dress up" and really, the magic of femininity, as they first appeared to me so many years ago. Thank you so much for all your work, I promise it's worth it. This channel is a true gem

I love the inclusion of Frida since the wardrobe is an ode to traditional and indigenous clothing here in México But I Just have to mention that the clothing both in the movie and in real life did not reflect the time period. It was actually a Statement to wear such clothes as the society of Her time period just wore what was fashionable in the US and Europe at the time (1920's to 1950's). She wore them to simbolize her connection to her origins and to distinguish herself from other painters and important figures from all over the world that befriended and surrounded her. Even at the time when she was born in 1907 the Fashion for the upper classes (the one she came from and lived in) was of French inspiration as popularized by the President/dictator Porfirio Díaz. Frida was actually of German descent(by her father) but her choice of clothing was to reflect the love for her country. Actually she alongside her husband Diego where the ones who inspided their contemporaries to look at popular or common mexican art of indigenous roots for inspiration instead of following yet again foreign trends

I feel Baby Driver could maybe get an honourable mention in how subtle it shows the characters traits. Bats always wears red as he is always angry, and acts as a red heron to the main villain, buddy who always wears black. Deborah often wears yellow, which was Baby’s mother’s favourite colour, representing familiarity etc. Baby’s jacket is black and white, showing how he’s stuck inbetween a good life (his foster father, in which I will add that when he’s with him, he wears white, showing no mixed feelings, and his life with Deb) and his life of crime. Also at the end, Baby is wearing all black (and grey) to show he has gone further down the life of crime. This is probably completely ott but I thinks it’s cool
