rewatching this show to prepare for this video was excruciatingly painful, things have changed an awful lot in 2 decades. while MANY of the outfits in sex and the city are an eyesore, it'd be a lie if i said they weren't influential at the time. here's a breakdown of some of the fashion trends that sex and the city had a hand in popularizing in the 2000s.
here are the articles about nameplate necklaces and black cultures influence on 2000s fashion in general:

I have a younger sister like this. She fell in love with shoes when she was about 2 years old. She would shriek from her pushchair as we walked past a shoe shop, demanding we stop. She had a lot of shoes starting pretty early. As a kid, her dream was to own a shoe shop. She took it all very seriously. As a teen, she worked in a shoe store and freaking loved it! Not kidding. She sent herself bankrupt in her early 20's over-shopping shoes but has been following a strict budget for ten years now. She has a massive shoe collection but for record, it's well organized, she doesn't have any doubles and they're well cared for. When she falls out of love with a pair of shoes, she sells it and because she takes excellent care of her shoes and has so many, a lot of them look like she never wore them. I did worry about her when she got a part-time job at a shoe shop while she was on mat-leave. Her husband gave up and built a room in the basement for her collection years ago. I love flying and have probably thrown away similar money traveling, so I'll keep my mouth firmly shut on my opinion about her shoe habits.

For me it's about style, confidence & self expression..."style never goes out of fashion,confidence never go out of style & the art of self-expression is all relative". Thrive in what you like to wear, what you can afford, what buisnesses you want to support & what products you won't support; for lack of diversity in campaigns or exploit cultural heritage without informing & giving back to these communities, factories that underpay workers & put their health at serious risk, products that abuse/test on animals or kill them for consumerism... While it's true it's unrealistic, SATC is a love letter to complicated female friendship, relationships and New York City itself. It's a fairy tale for adults, not realism for realism's sake. Notice how we never/rarely hear about the girls' parents or home lives pre-adult hood? In my headcanon I believe Carrie had parents that were well to do, and set her up with a nice apartment. She mentions buying vogue over food because it "fed me more" so money has *been* an issue for her. Perhaps she makes only enuff to cover her apartment realistically but then again she has like zero savings in the middle seasons. Like I said fairytale lol. How can buy all those shoes and have zero savings *and* live in that apartment, buy all those clothes AND afford to eat out 89% of the time?

Side note: Gold jewelry wasn't really "in fashion" in the late 90s/2000. It was all about minimalism, Y2K, silver, stainless steel, etc. which further emphasizes Carrie's (and probably the writers') classist distain for it as fine jewelry.
@anamarte7547
@anamarte7547 3 года назад
Uhm...Gold jewelry was in style in the working classes and Latin America for this very reason. Latinos associate frivolous or showy wealth as status symbols, it’s why nails, plastic surgery, hair color and flashy fashion is also hugely popular in the group as opposed to the more quiet American market that prefers to demonstrate their wealth through practical accessories like bags, shoes and jackets. Shoes, bags and jackets are the most expensive practical stuff in the fashion market but Latinos hate them they can’t change them often since they associate the ability to embrace trendy looks as a luxury and style instead of praising individual style.

That’s VERY different from the way it was work back in the 2000’s 🤣 it was a plain ol underwire bra, similar to the one we all have hidden away and never get rid of because it’s so comfy. And they’d show off the straps, or let it peak out in front or through the arm holes of your shirt. It’s exactly what you’d imagine you’d look like after a bar fight on a night out clubbing 😂

I remember why that was - bras were shit and clothing cuts were equally as shit - it was like a curse and often not intentional - whatever you wore, stuff peaked out. It got normalized as it was unavoidable but I remember so many times I wished my stupid bra wasn't showing through my stupid tank top :(

I feel like every decade was iconic except the 2010s. Like... the only things that characterized it were adidas shoes, cold shoulders, and colored skinny jeans. Can you do a video on how un-iconic the 2010s were? Like... the 2020s are already 5 times as iconic and they do have a real vibe... just me?

My mother (gen x) introduced me to this show while saying "Listen, my dear, this show taught me several lessons and helped me cope with a lot of things when I was a young adult. So now it's time for you and I to watch it together!". To this day, when we want to relax together we just watch "Sex and the City" and discuss how some things are still relevant or complain about Carrie's character development. P.s.: this show definitely needs more attention from young adults of this generation

I normally never comment on RU-vid videos. However, this video is so amazing and so detailed and well researched. SATC is my favorite show and I watch it twice a year and I watch it for the characters, but mostly for this fashion. Only recently have I tied together the trends that you've mentioned here, but you go above and beyond to linking it to its contemporary runway shows (Galliano, Calvin Klein, Helmut Lang). I've always been impressed with your videos, but this IS chefs kiss. The Ratatouille of fashion on RU-vid. Yay!!
