In 1968 my dad sent me up to Tennant, Ca. on a bus that stopped in Yreka where my grandmother picked me up. I was to stay with my grandmother for 2 weeks before summer was to end. I was 12. My grandmother ran a small country store & kitchen bar for the loggers on Tennant Road. They would show up for breakfast and lunch. Our sleeping quarters were above it, in a loft. Coming from the San Fernando Valley, I was mesmerized by the wonderful views and scents. I felt like I was in Heaven. I would lay in the creek looking up at all the monstrous evergreens. It made me think about God and I talked to Him a lot. I made friends with Chipmunks and walked up the road to peek in the windows of a row of old houses, along with an old schoolhouse that looked very different from my school in southern California. My grandmother Josephine Krogh was very kind and gentle-spirited. I had never really known her very well; having only seen her a few times before, when I was younger. Those two weeks were a turning point for me in the sense that it was a big world out there to explore, and I realized I hated my home life. I didn't want to go home. I wanted to stay there with my grandmother, but it was just a limited job for her. I didn't mention my grandfather because he wasn't my real grandfather and he was a hopeless drunk. He would get smashed in the store and fall on the floor. Sometimes right in front of the loggers. It embarrassed me. It was good to get away from my abusive mother and 3 sisters who were antagonistic to me. My father didn't know my mom was abusive because he worked 6 days a week for 12-16 hours as a ceramic tile setter. He and I were very close and I could've told him what was going on at home, but I knew he was always tired and didn't deserve to bear anymore. I know this was long. But the impact this trip to Tennant had on me (as a child becoming a young lady) had had a huge impact; naturally and spiritually. I always wanted to go back there to live in the area and raise my kids there, but it just never happened. That area of Tennant and its surrounding glory had an impact on me almost the same as meeting Jesus when I was 21.
THAT, my dear, is a wonderful testimony. I was from Long Beach and moved to SoOregon in '93. I've been to Tennant 3 times on the job doing computer repair. Tiny little hamlet, and I'd be surprised if a store was still there...doesn't look like too many homes are left. It really is a mystical, magical place...a great way to see God in the trees and mountains. From your words, you missed the winter in Tennant. Really heavy snow. Way back in '68? Had to be a great experience.
Susie, thanks for sharing your experience! I was born and raised in the NW end of the SFV, and now live in Tennant! Small world, eh? Your grandmother's store is still here, at least a majority of the structure, and the school is still standing, too. Neither is safe to enter, as both are in serious disrepair. We live very close to the school. We've seen two black bears in our side yard in the past couple of years, and there are still lots of local animals of various types. One night, many years ago, a beautiful, calm red fox came to our deck and sat right near the window. We stared at one another for about 5-10 minutes before it finally turned to walk slowly away. It was mystical, staring so curiously and respectfully at one another! Tennant Road is completely paved now, through the town and all the way out to Hwy 97, and Long Prairie Rd. has a short span paved, with the rest being dirt. The rest of Tennant remains unpaved. There are metal mailboxes across the road from your grandma's store, just to the left of the 'fire truck' garage. Summers, as you experienced, are beautiful up here, though winters still have enough snow to stop some of us from getting out for several days. January 20-22, 2010, we had back-to-back blizzards that dumped a total of five feet of very heavy snow on our tiny town. It was gorgeous, but a massive job to try to shovel ourselves out. Sadly, we lost two elderly residents to death last year, which decreased the town's population by almost ten percent. There are still many of the original cottages intact (80+), but most are empty or used only occasionally as vacation homes. Perhaps you can stop in again, someday! I'm so sorry to hear of the painful aspects of your childhood, yet very glad that Tennant was a blessing for you - and also that you met Jesus at age 21. Blessings upon you!
I am 68 years old. We moved to the Yreka area from Montana when I was eight in 1964. I love the mountains, mountain lakes, rivers, and other natural wonders of Siskiyou County. We spent a lot of time in the Eddy Mountains, Scott Valley, Klamath River, Mt. Shasta, and Dead Fall Lakes.
Castle Lake is one of my favorites. You can only get in after the snow melts. The road goes directly to the lake. Bring a blow up raft. You can see the bottom of the lake even in the center. It is so high in elevation moss doesn't grow. Lake Shastina is North of Weed along the 5 freeway. It's a good size lake, you can kayak or use the blow up raft. Camping is also available, pack in pack out. Water on the spigot. Normally pretty quiet. Pike's Peak is a Cindercone, you can hike it. It sits alongside the 5 freeway. Wait till the snow is gone, it's pretty and has some amazing views. Dunsmuir is a cute little town with a train station, it looks so sweet decked out for Christmas. The Mountain (Shasta) has a road that climbs about halfway up. Great place to picnic.
I know Siskiyou County intimately, at least I thought. You guys really showed me places I didn't know about. Have you ever been inside Wyntoon a few miles east of McCloud? I did a few jobs there and it is an amazing place. Patty Hearst never showed up though. McCloud in the winter is a blizzard magnet, amazing snow. Don't forget the winter logging truck drivers on Hwy 89...they have death wishes and care nothing of other drivers. I really think the summit of Mt. Scott on Hwy 3 above Callahan is spectacular. What a drive! Don't forget Scott Valley from Ft. Jones to Etna....in winter it's the most picturesque view I've ever seen. And you just can't beat driving along Big Springs Rd. and A12 during Spring thaw...the pastures are beautiful. And one can't but be amazed at the geology of Shasta Valley, from Weed to Anderson Grade. It's like travelling back a million years. Wow, thanks for your tour. And p.s.......travelling the region for 25 years, I've never seen a bigger bear in my life than one lumbering across Hwy 89 about 10 miles east of McCloud. Huge.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have been driving through this area a lot the past few years and discovering more about it. One thing you missed mentioning is that tule lake has this pretty extensive bird sanctuary that is found on the drive between lava beds national park and the town of tule lake. It’s cool even if you aren’t a bird enthusiast because during certain times of the year there are just soooooo many birds there! Thanks for posting
Just booked my stay in Dunsmuir. Going up in May to explore Burney Falls, Hedge creek falls, Mossbrae falls, farey & McCloud falls. This is going to be epic & I'm beyond excited.
Excellent overview of a gorgeous area of CA! Lots I didn’t know about - been to two of the three falls on the McCloud River, but you just gave us another long list of amazing places to visit!
Surprised you didn't mention Castle/Heart Lakes just above Lake Siskiyou. Such great views of Shasta from up there. Mt Eddy is a great hike as well. Also, you don't need to be an advanced mountaineer to climb Shasta and I believe you are allowed to explore almost all the caves at Lava Beds as long as you know what you're doing.
After 50+ years of taking vacations around Mt. Shasta I finally have a little place of my own in town. This video is excellent. I will share it with my eldest daughter, Shasta Rayne, who also lives in the area. Thank you for making and sharing.
Nice video but as a life long Siskiyou county resident, you missed SO much!! First I have to say, it's not Highway 5, it's Interstate 5 or I-5!! So, when you went to Etna, you should have taken a VERY scenic drive down the Scott River. It is about an hour and half drive from Fl. Jones to where it comes out on the Klamath River. A lot of gold came out of that river, there is fantastic views, swimming pools and a very pleasant drive. The Klamath River area goes from outside of Yreka to the coast, if you have the time, it is a fantastic drive!! You will go through some very old towns, Seiad, Happy Camp, etc, the Hoopa Indian Reservation and some of the best salmon and steelhead fishing anywhere. You can also access the Marble Mtn. Wilderness on that route. Not many live in Siskiyou, but it is one of the most interesting and beautiful areas around.
Thank you for this beautiful video! Several places the two of you mentioned I have yet to visit. An additional good stop is Castle Crags State Park. You’ll have a choice of several trails of various difficulties, including the PCT. I took a very short easy trail, I think it’s called overlook trail. You can view Mt. Shasta and Castle Crags from there. As far as photography goes, I got better photos of the Crags from Railtown ( the train hotel). In fall, the entire area is awash in colors!

Having lived in both Etna, Mount Shasta and McCloud y’all sure left off some special places. To name a few: Salmon River, Cattle Camp in McCloud, McCloud River Mercantile, Castle Lake Mt. Shasta, The Buddha Hole Mt. Shasta, Callahan, CA. McCloud River McCloud, CA. Kangaroo Lake on the way to Callahan, CA. Sacred Mountain Hot Springs, Ah-Di-Na campground McCloud CA (frequently visited by Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Hearst Family) Mt Shasta Ski Resort, Shasta Abbey Zen Center, Madrone Artisan Boutique Hospice one of the greatest thrift shops ever.
The one most spectacular sites the public is forbidden access to is Wyntoon. Located 3 miles east of McCloud, Ca., it is the massive, tall-timber acreage of the north Hearst Estate. A massive complex hidden some miles off Hwy 89, the Bavarian village-style buildings border the McCloud River. With no visible entrance from the highway, its non-descript frontage is the forest...and only family, workers, and contractors are allowed entrance. It was my great thrill to work in the estate a few times.
Excellent video. I lived in N. Cal for 3 years and the only one of these I saw was Mt Shasta. Now I live in S. Cal. Guess I need to do a road trip this summer.
I suggest people should go up Mt. Shasta rather than just view it from afar. There is a huge difference in atmosphere(i.e. you feel good) between the two. Above about 3,000 feet is where it generally starts. You can drive it. I found Castle Lake to be a good place to visit, and Castle Crags is great, if you can still hike. I'm drinking headwater right now.

If you kayak down mccloud river you can spot the 2nd Hearst Castle that is still owned by the family, it's non accessible and not open to the public. It's quite a hidden piece of history in the north state nobody even knows about.
I'm thinking of moving to Yreka, got a friend that lives on a farm there, so it's interesting to see the area. Certainly is beautiful...not sure what I would do for a job but we will see...right now it's just a thing that is possible but not set in stone. I really want to get away from Phoenix and the damn heat here! i HATE IT! lol
Are used to live right next to the mountain of Mount Shasta are used to live in weed. When I was younger I even went drinking and went in the caves I also found a pair of socks in Dunsmuir next to the waterfall 😅
Cal 20 Sailor, I keep wondering about the impact of people. I believe people who aren't sensitive to nature have a negative effect on it. Mt. Shasta is an exception, but the chemtrails have suppressing effect on its energy. Believe it or not, you can enhance nature. It's just people don't have the proper tools to do it. Don't believe most environmentalists, because they don't even know the effect on nature that just building a road or something has. They aren't sensitive enough. They need to actually experience the effects, rather than read things from books.@Cal 20 Sailor
As a NorCal guy as soon as you said "the 5" I laughed... they're not from here hahaha!!! Whenever I'm coming back to CA from OR and I pass the big barn that says "State of Jefferson" and the dragon I know I'm close to home

I moved from San Jose, where I was raised, to Redding, where I've lived for the last 20 years. I call this place "home". You made a wonderful video of great places to visit. All this beauty in my own "backyard". Have you ever had the chance to visit Mt. Lassen? I notice a lot of people making these videos leave Lassen out, in favor of highlighting Mt. Shasta. Love these recommendations. I was just up there and wanted to explore but the fires and record heat made it impossible this trip. But I did find a fun restaurant in dunsmuir called the wheelhouse. Right now it’s only open for walk up diners but when it’s open again to the public has shelves upon shelves of board games. And of course ones you’ve never seen before. In this old historic building. I totally want to go back and spend more time up there. Love Nor Cal
Please if you visit any of these areas be Kind to the locals, PICK UP YOUR TRASH, and please dont park your car in the middle of the roads if your car cant fit then it just cant fit come back later. Im so tired of our areas being polluted of over exposure i cant count how many times my friends and i have had to pick up tourists dirty diapers and beer cans etc.. from these areas and i know after a long time of travel to get here you might be cranky but to be rude to us when you arrive while we work, and then when we finally get a day of to go visit these spots to then have to stock my car with gloves and garbage bags just to pick up your trash is the most rude and annoying thing ever. So please if you visit these areas thank you for contributing to our county’s income however just be kind to the nature your in and the locals who serve you to try and make your stay happier.
Great recommendations but you guys forgot to show some love to the great famous BURMY FALLS, highly recommend for the area as it is knowned to be the 8th wonder of the world by former president Theodore Roosevelt.

Regarding #14, you DON'T recommend drinking from the headwaters? Are you crazy? Why would you not? It is one of the purest natural sources of water in North America. You CAN and SHOULD drink from it. In fact, people come from all around to fill up their water bottles here, because the locals know it is sacred and incredibly pure water.

The creators of this video are not familiar with the area. Thers so many more places in this area to explore. Theres alot of important info that should of been said. Mt Shasta is known for being one of the chakras of mother earth. Almost everyone that visits the head waters drink this blessed water and takes some water home.
