It doesn't matter if the camera is Netflix approved. That's just their criteria for thier original films. If you make a film and they want it, they're going to buy it and show it, no matter what camera you used.
As a daily user of both the A7Siii and the FX30 in a professional agency environment, this is a great breakdown of the pros and cons. I love both of these cameras!
Bro I really dig this style of content. You're experience in the industry shows and your passion shines through. Straight to the point. Lovin it. Im transitioning into film from being an audio engineer for 20 years and this kind of content is extremely valuable for someone like me. Notification bell is on! Salute.
I didn't hear you mention the rolling shutter. The readout on the FX30 is 16ms (like a Pocket 6K) whereas on the A7SIII it's 8ms -- best in the game for the price. I sold my Pocket 6K because there was too much jello, especially when shooting anamorphic. Speaking of, when shooting anamorphic, I wouldn't do it without a monitor that can de-squeeze and use LUTs, so having those features in-camera for me is a non-issue.
@@shueibdahir Sorry, how would the rolling shutter improve if I were to shoot more? And gyro data post-effects is great for stabilization, but doesn't help much with smeared images as it's baked in to the captured data.
@@shueibdahir Let's say you're shooting from a side window of a car going 60mph with a 16+ms rolling shutter camera. Each frame is going to be skewed to a harsh degree (ie. slant). If the camera itself is perfectly stable inside of the car, how does gyro data fix that?
A lot of valid points: Just some notes, the EVF has a lot of glass on the A7Siii, I suspect the EVF adds so much weight. Also, while the most of the grey bits are metal, almost everything black is plastic. However, if you look a t a teardown video, this thing is built like a tank. The Magnalium chassis is very thin and all the screws are reinforced. Edit: typos.
The 28-135 is an absolutely fabulous lens. Used it on my FX6 before I sold it. Now have an FX30 because I wanted a lighter kit and will be getting the 18-110 as with the crop on the 30 the 28-135 is not wide enough. That said those Sony PZ lenses are really great, super sharp and just great for video work.
I study film and I'm about to graduate soon, so I'm looking for a camera to buy for my own independent projects and business shoots. These two camera's were my options but the FX30 falls better into my price range and this video convinced me into not pushing into the a7Siii because of how you broke down the benefits of FX30. Thanks for the feedback
If you have to choose between a A7Siii or FX3 Full Frame and a Arri Alexa Mini or Arri Alexa 35 which are S35, which one will you pick? The Full frame or the S35?
Incorrect, they did not replace the BG with CGI on the Creator. They laid the effects over the backgrounds for most shots. That’s why they travelled to so many countries and shot at many different locations. They saved a lot of money by using the actual locations filmed in the shot!
I have 2 fx30 cameras for in my office/studio and i really enjoy them. I can only imagine how awesome the fx3 would be. I hope to save up for a fx3 ii in the future. Should i keep buying apsc lenses or look into full frame lenses at this point? Thanks and i subbed. Looking forward to your next video 👍
*I love My FX30 because it's My First Cinema Camera. I'm also more of a Video Guy then Photo and the FX30 suits me fine as It's an APS-C Camera and I had the a6400 so My Lens worked fine. Don't really care about what others say cause this is for my RU-vid Channel and it works for me. No Camera is Perfect, only Perfect for that Person*
@@JustinPhillip Thank you very much! Any suggestions of using XLR mic setup with the fax-30 instead of the hot shoe adapter and lastly….thoughts if anything on the a6700as hybrid?
Hi Justin, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your practical and useful reviews! Please keep up the good work we need people that have ACTUAL PRACTICAL experience on the field and can provide an insight on what matters the more ... logistics, workflow, image quality balance and not just the hype of the tech specs of a camera. I get your frustration with a younger generation of creators that want to use the term "film" so they can feel better and of course ... for marketing and selling points. Expanding on the latter, the change of terminology - for no particular reason by people (youngsters) that desperately trying to get attention by any means feasible - have caused some communication issues with my work as an audio engineer too. Specifically using wrong the term "mastering" when they actually mean "auto normalize" and so forth. So, I get your point of view. Please keep unbiased reviews coming :) Many thanks!
You can get a waveform and false colour on the Sony creator app (and on most professional monitors) but I've always used zebras on the camera itself. It's a decent exposure tool if you know how to use it.
This was a really entertaining and great inspiring overview. Now I'm curious what you think about the Lumix S5 2X compared to both the FX30 and the FX3. I'm having such a hard time making a decision... I love my Sony's but I want to upgrade to full frame from my three a6600s I've been shooting with for the last 3 years. And I can get to Lumix with two lens for the price of one FX3 with one lens. I just don't know if the Sony is twice as good... The stabilization on the Lumix seems awesome and the color tone. It may have some moire and rolling shutter though but I might be able to live with that since it seems minimal and only and extreme circumstances. I did buy the FX30 and I still can return it. I do like it but the stabilization is not very good. I just feel like the Lumix might be more fun and inspiring to shoot differently and do more handheld with a nice full frame. I plan on continuing to do interviews but would really like to the more handheld coverage of for example someone cooking in a kitchen or just showing a product
Best way to get good performance out of Sony’s IBIS is to pair it with a lens that also has OIS. But lumix has always had really good ibis. The biggest advantage of the Sonys vs Lumix is the AF. But you may not be concerned wiith that. It sounds like you already have E mount glass but guess it wouldnt help if its APS-C glass. The next big advantage of Sony is the lowlight performance, i dont think anyone can beat what Sony does in that Dept.
Great video! Thank you for making and posting it, I found it very helpful. Do you have a video or a recommendation for a video to watch - that discusses why Sony hasn't provided significant and frequent updates to the a1 and a7s iii firmwares? You hint at it in this video but you don't go into it and I'm wondering if anyone is openly discussing it. Question two, do you think that 240fps (in 1080p) is the limit we'll ever see on these cameras and if you think it's a technical issue or if it is just providing too much value for lower price points and people wouldn't buy the more expensive cameras? But if it's the latter, why wouldn't the higher end models have 480 fps? Along with that do you think we'll see 240 fps in 4K in the next models that are released? Thank you very much for your help.
How do you feel it against fx3? Just curious. I got the fx3. I have a crop sensor and found it less than ideal. Wanted full frame. Thoughts. Just seriously interested
Oh yes i would much prefer the FX3! 😅 but i’ve been getting by still with the FX30, the servo for doc, and my Leica Rs with metabones for lowlight and more dynamic shots
Hey bro! 👋🏻 I use sony a7 r5 for photography and I have sony 135,34,50 gm series as lenses. I want to buy a video camera, which one would you buy? Fx30 or a7 4?
I have a Sony a6500, Sony FS5, Sony a7RV & Sony FX30. Very pleased with all of them in their use. I am not a branded guy and so curious about your Sigma FP. Wondering why you used the Sony a7sIII over the Sigma? Was there a tech spec given to you for the second unit shots or was there another reason?
Are you referring to the Hulu doc that I was the 2nd Unit DP on? In that case, the show was shot on Sony FX6 & FX9. So they wanted to keep it all on the similar color pipeline & sensor.
@@JustinPhillip ah I get it. Ecosystem. Really most cameras can be matched with the use of logs and talented color people but that could be enough to go over budget these days. Seems if I put together enough coin and my interest continues I may pick up a Sigma at some point anyway. Another black hole I guess. I have been traveling with the FX30 because well you know it’s tiny! Easy to hop planes making a doc with a back pack.
Muchas gracias! Hope you can traslade it properly
I need a b cam to my 6kpro. I really need something with autofocus that i can put on a slider since I'm a one man band. I'm looking at s5IIX, fx30 or a7cII. Which would you choose or is there a better option?
I dont know of any camera that can match the blackmagic colors. Its tricky mixing different camera companies. Maybe the Lumix will come the closest and you can export BRAW
Hello. I agreed. My climate conditions for my workflow is pretty damm hot! I don't think I can make a7s3 work more than 15 mins. However fx30 have cooling fan. No matter what are specifications for both camera I have to choose one with active cooling!
I'm a totally newbie... But do you think shooting on the Fx30 is a good way to get used to crop sensor field of view especially if one ever bumbs up to a Komodo or other high end super 35??
I totally agree with you on the lack of proper exposure features like false colour or waveform and no shutter angle. Although they will finally be getting shutter angle update in September 2024. That's said, why on earth are you complaining about the weight being lighter? That's so irrelevant to the actual function of the camera. While the fx3/30 have added a fan they both have removed the shutter mechanism, EVF and the tree mode dials. Plus they have reduced the body size because they no longer had to accommodate those parts internally so there's less material in the body's construction as well. So that's why it's lighter. I can understand if the build quality felt cheap but I don't see how a lighter body can be a "problem" at all in this type of camera. Which is design to be compact and used as a B or C cam. When you rig it out it's going to be a few pounds heavier anyways so starting from a lighter camera body is a plus for me. Now if you're just going to bare bones it in a run n gun situation then having a lil extra weight may help steady your shots sometime but still in that case it's an easy fix to add weight than to take it off.
Yeah i can see your logic on that, but i like to keep most my cameras as bare bones as possible. I literally just use the servo zoom, a small top handle, and a shotgun mic. Thats it. But ive recently picked up a Tiny cine saddle which helps with extra stabilization
1. Love your content. Positive vibes. 2. You worded your statement on the Viltrox speed booster as you not having used it. Yes the electronics are fully garbage. And no I don’t have your experience. But until you’ve actually used and inspected it, I’m here to tell people the glass element inside works great.
Man, you really nailed this! Wow! Fantastic. I have been considering adding an FX3/FX30 and this really has me wanting to add this to my A7SIII. Call my gear old, but I also still run a few FS5MII's. Such a dope video! Great job!
really like FX30, especially with 11mm 1.8 , 24mm 2.8 G, 40mm 2.5 G cheapest good quality, light, compact lenses. set of them cost 1500$+1700$ body. its ultimate camera setup not even for working, amazing travel setup, you can rig it to drone, cars, grip on clamp... imho perfect camera for creative shots and any type of content)
There is a rumer going around that in late Sep. 2024 that the fx3 and fx30 are getting firmware updates that allow you to use shutter speed or shutter angle. Anyone else have any info on this. just ordered my fx30 last night and hearing about the update today has me excited that sony still cares about the fx30.
Already released! I installed the update on my FX30 with no issues. Shutter angle selection is not totally straightforward. Watch a video on how to set it.
Thanks man, really appreciate your non-bs, non-youtubey, non nonsense and knowledgeable output that comes from real world experience... got tired of the purple guy long ago. Followed you for a long while having pretty much the same kit... Pocket 4K, A7S III, FX6, Komodo, Leica-R, CY Zeiss. Love you dude, keep on keeping on and keeping it real... to reel (yeah I fully intended that pun and ain't gonna apologise!)
One of the rare “camera as a production tool” insights. Very pragmatic 😊. Do you think the ZV E-1 is worth it for nano budget short movies for RU-vid (100s of Euros) or is more a fancy toy, vlogging only? Thanks a lot!
Why does everyone shit on Netflix? Their movie requirement is 4K if they are going to put their name on it. Someone has to tell me why this is scandalous. I pay $20/month for Netflix and I think their owned content can be very bad to pretty good to outstanding. I'm paying $250/month for internet and a basic TV package from my local provider. I don't watch it anymore, but my wife does, hence, I can't cut the cord. I can get everything else online other than the overdone cable procedurals. You're caustic Justin. I'll continue watching because I agree with some of what you are saying and you remind me of a dear friend that would piss everyone off until you challenged him. A fan of your content? TBD
I just started professionally as a photographer and videographer. I need to get some corporate clients because I am not getting much action in the civilian sector.
It will be harder to get corporate clients right now if you have not built a solid corporate clientele. The market just simply does not allow it right now with companies cutting on budgets from small to big ones.
I don't normally laugh out loud but this made me laugh when you said "oh i didn't realize you work for Netflix and you have a bunch of producers knocking at your door" hahahahahahahaaha!!!!!!! Subscribed!
This is an amazing review. Interesting enough the cons, are mostly positive to me. I prefer lightweight due to wrist and joint pain. Only the crop sensor, low light and auto focus make me more inclined to FX3. Will probably end up getting rid of my Sony A7III to go full film on the FX3. Thanks for the review!
I've literally just done the same as you, gone from an A7siii to an FX30 and love the build and button placement, everything is just gearted to filming with it being a 'cine' (video) camera. Ive bought a cage as wont be rigging it much due to using it for weddings so need to keep it minimal but wanted to give it a bit of protection. False color and waveforms etc would be great although I use a small 5" monitor with these features so its not a big deal. I think the weight will probably be due to the A7siii having a viewfinder?
Great video Justin. I think you'd dig the Lumix S5II and Lumix S5IIX. Full frame and packed full of features including a 24hz cinema mode for true 48p, 24p etc It also has active cooling, anamorphic de-squeez and a bunch of other cinema-centric features 😀
Shiiit man you are awesome 👌 Great video! Finally someone who can stand behind every word spoken. 🙌 You got me subscribed immediately. So honest, so true, without need to tell the stories everyone else is telling. You don't give a shit, because you know you're right. Whoa man... You are just so fucking great 💪💪👌👌 All the best!!! Just keep doing it!
I loved this video. Really appreciate your honesty and even healthy expression of frustration with all these jokers out there. Only thing I disagree with is that no one shoots photos on the a7s3. Maybe I’m the only one but damn I love the easy/lite workflow of 12mp . Do a LOT of paid photo gigs with it and always happy clients. But definitely love video on it way more I gotta say.
yea, you know i used to use the a7Siii for street photography as well. But it was really out of necessity, because at the time i didn't have another camera for photos. But i personally wasn't satisfied with the 12MP. For online, it's great, but for anything else, idk, i just always found myself being unimpressed with the detail in post. But certainly still capable, that's for sure! Then again, i love my old Leica M8, and it's only 10MP! But with that particular camera, i think it adds to the "filmic" quality. 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you for sharing the wonderful info regarding the FX30 - I almost got one myself this year, but I went for the A7IV instead, because i wanted the photo features as well as the video stuff, I have to admit though the FX30 is a beautiful kit. I don't know if it is wishful thinking, but do you think SONY will ever give us a firmware update with shutter-angle option, as opposed to the current shutter-speed they putting out there? Your channel is great by the way and I always enjoy seeing what you do with various kits. 😎
@@JustinPhillip you should also check out the LUMIX S5IIX and GH6 - would love to see your opinion on those - Ive been using them for a few months so far and have been really impressed.
Can you give me your opinion on whether I should get the Sony FX3 or a7SIII? My primary focus is RU-vid videos including run and gun. I want full frame and 4k
Cool to see Sony adopting some of the settings that Panasonic released back with the GH5. The things they still lack, and the thing that "influencers" like you could actually "make a big fuss over" (aka forces Sony to bring it to their gear) is these "menu / software" things. - things like WFM, shutter angle, micro-sync shutter adjust.
would you mind recommend a camera between new full frame balckmagic camera, sigma pf and fx3? Regardless of the price which one would you pick for run and gun documentary style (handheld/ tripod)
14:29 this isn’t me trying to say that you’re wrong, in any way, shape, or form. But funnily enough, one of my favorite photos that I’ve ever taken was taken on my FX3. Not even a camera with an EVF.
This is just a specs list. Yes, you can create amazing videos with the FX30, but if you want the best image quality, the A7Siii is just better. Period. The list of specs in the FX30 may provide you more flexibility, but it will not provide you the image quality of the A7Siii sensor and the 120fps aren’t nearly comparable. In any case, the FX30 is also an amazing camera.
Thank you for the great breakdown of the pros and cons, and also found your previous video very informative about how it's not really a cinema camera. I'm currently debating getting a BM 6K G2 or the FX30, leaning towards the FX30 because I do, do some sports videography for a friend, but also aiming to shoot a short film next year. Could I get away with the BM 6K G2 shooting sports videos? Thank you again for making the video, it was very informative, and love the channel.
What about noise in low light, or for example in low key staged scenes where one bright object contrasts with dark areas? One blogger in the review said that he had to abandon the fx30 due to noise, because it uses a dim lighting design. And RU-vid, when compressed, according to him, turned this noise into square artifacts)))
I have 2 A7s3 and 1 a7IV, bought the fx30 and I went to a party to filming. Conclussion: Fx30 in low light, with a sony 15mm, f1.4 even at low iso, ugly chromatic grain, it can't be compared to sony in any way, and it's also apsc, an entry level camera, the next day I sent it back. That's how good the FX30 is. It cannot even be compared with the a7IV, which is much better, It can only be compared with the apsc a6700 cameras.
That's what I like about you: your realness and your clear way of explaining things!!! I completely lost it when you made that remark about peoples nose into some a** 😁🤣😂🤣😂🤣😁🤣😂🤣
power zoom baby. if you use sony. you should take advantage of its video features and zoom rocker. I shoot canon though. mainly photos but this could sway me..
By the way, I saw that you use mini dolls in your work. Tell me, have you noticed the “jelly effect” while driving around dolly cameras with matrix stabilization? When I first got on a shift where they used dolly, I was surprised why the operator only used a camera on the dolly without stabilization. But they explained to me that it is impossible to use cameras with stabilization on a dolly cart.
I actually have never used a sony camera on the dana dolly. Thats just for my RED. But yea, much like the gimbal, you should always turn off image stabilization if using an outside stabilizer. I even turn it off when i go on tripod. Just start panning or tilting and you’ll notice the Ibis counteracts it.
@@JustinPhillip Yes, of course the stabilizer will conflict. And about dolli, they told me that this is due to the fact that the matrix is not rigidly fixed and jelly occurs when stabilization is turned off when wiring on the cart
Hey Justin, I use the sigma 18-35 1.8 on my fx30 because to regain some depth of field. Don’t you loose a lot by using the 28-135 because of the F4. Grtz Arthur
i personally have not used the x-h2s. I like what i've seen from the camera tho. I do think fuji have something good going on with their "film simulations". I like the option of internal ProRes that's pretty nice. As far as actual video features, i'm not sure if it offers what the FX30 does. One thing I am sure of tho, is the AF will not be as good on the Fuji. Almost everybody that switches to Fuji from Sony, the first thing they complain about is the AF not being as good. And the way I use Sony cameras (Doc/Corporate) I need AF, and fast/reliable AF. But if you're just looking to make little movies, then obviously AF shouldn't be a concern.
Have no desire to watch that movie. Mainly because its not my kind of movie. You do know they replaced the majority of the backgrounds in that film with CGI yea? 🤷🏼♂️ Nothing amazing about that to me, but im a purist i suppose. I mean have you ever seen Tangerine? That was shot on iPhone 5.
@@JustinPhillip I have watched "Tangerine" & fully aware before watching it was totally shot on a iPhone. For me I figure I can not speak about something I have not seen, how I choose to go about it. My buddy has an FX30, I have used it, the footage coming out of it is really sweet!
Hey, I genuinely enjoy your content and appreciate everything you share. However, the passive-aggressive tone in your delivery sometimes makes it difficult for me to fully embrace the content. If you could adopt a more engaging communication style, similar to other filmmaking RU-vidrs, I would definitely recommend your channel. Despite agreeing with your points, the way you express them comes across as arrogant and prideful to me. And the thing about people using your videos for debate. Its fair use, your video is used on fair use, and people have other opinions haha but I really like the informative and technical part of it all
People make a big song and dance about cameras being Netflix-approved because they think if they shoot something on an approved camera then Netflix is going to buy their shitty film. Sorry if that's harsh but we all know it's true. 🤷♂
I'm always amused by questions like, is your camera Netflix approved? - even from people living in countries where Netflix is prohibited, and moreover, Netflix itself does not cooperate with these countries. While their regional video streaming services bring almost any material and pay in advance.
Just moving to Sony from BM and I hadn’t thought of that 24-135mm lens - I’ve always been a two lens guy for videography, but have one that does everything and is parfocal would be…clutch (never heard that word used to mean “good” before)
TBH, the 28-135 is not a great lens on a crop sensor camera unless you never shoot wide. The 18-110 makes much more sense for APSC especially considering you can make up for the shorter reach it has by using the clear image zoom.
if you are HERE to find out if you NEED this camera...well then you DO NOT need this camera. THATS JUST A FACT. (this is not a slam against this channel its a slam against people who worry too much about specs instead of how to make content)
I don't understand why, talking about a supposed-to-be cinema camera, you complain about the weight (which i find nonsensical since it doesn't impact performance) and right after that talk about the AF, which shouldn't be a feature to begin with on a "cinema" camera. I understand it might come in handy sometimes, but then all the rant about the 24p and the DCI 4K falls apart.
This video is seperate from the other one. But yes, weight does matter. Just think about overall build quality and micro jitters. One of the reasons why people build frankenstein rigs is to try to beef the camera up (on any mirrorless camera being used for video). Weight and build quality are a priority for me. 100%.
Hey Justin! Since u tend to slam the Super 35mm sensor in the Sony FX30, why don't u keep on going and top it off with tech data & lots of tap-toe dance moves with the Arri Alexa 35 new super 35 format with a 4.6K sensor? Let's hear the Hollywood rant & rave! Go for it boy, let's get the inside scoop from a Hollywood union gaffer! 😎😎
this DOES NOT feel like a toy justin.... your used to 6000 cameras and up that are big, this is a nice 1.4 pounds so its great for light weight CHEAP GIMBAL like the rs3 mini, or you can HANDHOLD IT TO VLOF OR IF YOU WANT WANDHELD FOOTAGE FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. quit talking all that smack WHEN THE SONY A7SIII WEIGHES THE SAME....get the good facts
