@@Nicofilms Hey! I'm from Manchester but I've moved around a bit for studying so now I have some weird northern + brummy accent. I binge watched all of your videos and they've been fantastic! @Nicofilms 4 года назад
@@lordashbob Haha I know what you mean! I love Manchester it's a great city! I'm so pleased you have liked them and hopefully found them useful! haha tough question I mean there are a lot of cultural differences but there is nothing that would be really embarrassing more things that you might find a little odd or quirky. There are a few things at the dinner table when you go out for meals but I have never really come across it as my colleagues are quite young and not as big on traditions. My last film was about some things so you don't get caught out like leaving your card in the ATM - which I've done, maybe that will help haha
@lordashbob
@lordashbob 4 года назад
@@Nicofilms I have definitely found them useful! Especially the basic chinese video :D Ahh I guess we have a lot of initial lenience being foreigners when it comes to those social taboos. I've been given a guide to China by the company im working for and there's stuff in here like "Don't gift people green hats" because of an ancient story of cuckoldry or gift anyone white flowers outside of a funeral. Strange stuff! I look forward to your next videos to just sponge as much information up as I can before I move. :D
@Nicofilms
@Nicofilms 4 года назад
@@lordashbob haha yeah there are a few ones but you kind of don't know until you do it. I think yellow flowers is another one. That is great your company gave you that, it's probably more helpful than me. Maybe this is something I need to do a video on haha There is a RU-vid comedy group called Mamahuhu and they often touch on subjects like that and what it's like being a foreigner in a funny way so you might find that helpful. Well, I release videos every 2 weeks so hopefully, you will get some more in before you come!

Wow you were teaching in Kazakhstan thats amazing, I really want to go it looks beautiful. Which do you prefer?
@wackyruss
@wackyruss 4 года назад
Nico -Kazakhstan was a total open book since it's a relatively obscure country. Everyone speaks Russian there as well as a Turkic language (Kazakh). Ethnic Kazakhs look similar to Mongolians and there are also many Russians still living there since Kazakhstan was a part of the USSR. Most of Kazakhstan is a vast plain or steppe with wild horses and camels. The Kazakhs used to live in yurts and were nomads until the Russians conquered them and built cities and towns. There are beautiful Tian Shan mountains in the southeast near Almaty, the largest city. Across the border in China is Xinjiang where many Chinese-Kazakhs and Uyghur people live. The Uyghurs are closely related to Kazakhs and speak a mutually intelligible language. China by contrast is like living in a movie- there are temples and ancient villages to explore plus massive cities to get lost in. Both Kazakhstan & China have their pros and cons but both are nothing short of an adventure!!

Ah, teaching! I came from a family of educators: teachers, ministry of education, universities, office of educational research, etc. .. China has immense respect for her teachers, and it really is a noble profession. In Chinese, the word for career is “事业”。But this word didn’t mean career in the modern sense in Classical Chinese, it’s more of a moral pursuit: from I Ching: “举而措之为天下之民,谓之事业”。“To establish and act upon for all People, this is career”. In a sense, teaching is one of the truest professions there is!

Hello Nika, thank you for this content!~!] I am studying for my TEFL with Saint Mary's University's Confucius Institute and when C-19 is over and done with, hope to make use of my newfoundknowledge and perhaps teach them things that they may not learn otherwise outside China, so when the DO decide to travel/immigrate, then they can better deal with positive as well as negative and sometimes downright terrifying things in our culture not-so-much experienced in Chinese culture.. (The "Red Dot" for example - What would a China person do if the red dot was on THEM?!) They should be taught to adhere to their roots stay true to their self, but that North/South America, Africa, Middle East, Down Under, and anywhere in the world that our countries are different from theirs and how they should react to certain situations in other countries according to cultural customs

I'm not going to lie it can be hard being away from family and friends but if you are with a school that has a lot of foreigners or in a city with a big expat community everyone is in the same boat and you will make lots of friends. The time goes by super fast here as it's so enjoyable to be here I'm sure you will love it. If you have all the requirements then I'm sure you will get lots of offers my advice would be to do some research on the company before signing anything. Social media is a great tool and you can reach out to teachers to get advice. Go with your gut and if something doesn't seem right then it might not be. If you need any help or you want some good companies to apply to, get in touch I'd be happy to help!

Hi Nico! Thank you for sharing, I have been researching programs and schools and am a bit overwhelmed. Can you recommend your favorite one please. Thank you!
@Nicofilms
@Nicofilms 3 года назад
Yes it can certainly be overwhelming. It really depends on what type of teaching you want to do as there are many types of schools here and it also depends on what city you want to live in. If it's your first time teaching a lot of people usually go for a training center or a kindergarten but if you have experience you might want to go for an international or public school. I would also recommend checking out people who work there or their social media to see what the schools and people's experiences are like. I work for a training center called First Leap and they have schools all over China. I came with a recruiting company called ESL Suite and they were really great and have lots of different jobs. So I can recommend these on personal experience.

Alas, you cannot legally work in China as an English teacher. To get the working visa you need to be from one of the Western English speaking countries. (America, Canada, UK, Ireland, NZ, Australia, or SA) You could go there on a tourist visa and work illegally.. but this is dangerous and would be VERY unpleasant if you are caught. As far as salaries go, idk now. I taught English in China, South Korea, and Vietnam years ago.

Hi Nico, I'm planning on going to teach English there and i wanted to ask you how are tattoos seen in China in the work environment since i have my my hands tattooed. Thanks :)
@Nicofilms
@Nicofilms 3 года назад
Some schools will have a problem with it and may ask you to cover them up but generally it is more accepted here than it used to be. Especially if you work in a larger first or second tier city there are many foreigners and so lots of people have tattoos. I also have some on my hands but they are quite small. I work on camera and only when I do close up crafts where you can see my hands clearly I need to cover them up but the rest of the time even though you can see them it's fine.
@kwchew3302
@kwchew3302 3 года назад
Having Tattoos are seen as being rebellion and often being associated with gangsters or certain types of people. Many youngsters in the west often thought of having them was *cool*.and became fashionable with more tattoos shops pooping up to capture such business opportunity. Being a teacher is a nobel and respected profession in China. They serve as a role model for the young students. Many parents certainly wouldn't like their children to be educated in schools where teachers are having tattoos on them. But nowadays many who have tattoos done as a teenagers due to ignorance often have them removed as they're into adulthood. Tattoos can be removed by laser surgery.

I lived in China for 15 years so here is my opinion. If you are a non-white non-native English speaker, you will find it very difficult to get a well paying job in a Tier 1 city. Why? Most Chinese parents expect that their English/subject teacher be in the following order (i) a white native-English speaking person, followed by (ii) a white non-native English speaker, then (iii) a black/Obama lite native English speaker then (iv) all others. Unfortunately, racism is rife in China. That is not to say all Chinese are racist - far from it, but schools prefer "whites" due to what the parents want - a white teacher - because they believe (incorrectly) that they are "better" teachers for their children. You may have more success in Tier 2-4 cities, but the pay and social/cultural life are a lot less. However, it's a great way to learn Chinese!

I have spent a lot of time in Beijing, Chengdu, and Hangzhou and to be honest I don’t see it. It would be very rare for me to run into someone in any of those cities who had a grasp on spoken English. I really would have expected better since foreigners have been going there to teach English for at least the last nineteen years. My wife works for a Chinese company here in the states and they send managers here for two or more years to work. The level of English for most of them is very low. These people have taken many English classes back in China so what’s the deal?
@Nicofilms
@Nicofilms 4 года назад
@@KS-oz1zw Interesting, I live in Beijing and I have found a lot more people speak English here than in Nanjing where I used to live. Maybe as I am British I always find people wanting to practice with me. I also think you never can really be an expert in a foreign language unless you have immersed yourself in it and lived in a native speaking country as its hard to practice every day to get good. I imagine the quality 19 years ago to today would be very different. Even since I moved to China a few years ago the standard in my company is always moving forward and improving for each generation.
@KS-oz1zw
@KS-oz1zw 4 года назад
I completely agree with the immersion. For example I have been learning Cantonese from my wife (she is originally from HK). In order to improve my listening, speaking, reading, and writing I watch movies without English subtitles I read articles to recognize characters, learn new ones, and improve my grammar. I try to make up sentences to use with my wife. The other aspect of immersion is the understanding the culture and how that effects the language in describing concepts, things, emotions, etc.. I do have to admit that maybe I don’t run into many people that speak English partially because my wife says I appear very intimidating. However, I do not behave in an aggressive manner. But I guess my appearance says, “serial killer”. Will see. We are going to China next month so hopefully this time somebody can tell where the nearest restroom is instead of running away. Haha.

@Nicofilms 4 года назад
@@KS-oz1zw hahaha I do know what you mean though. Some people are really not confident and get very shy. I even feel they can be like this when I (try to) speak in Chinese to them. I do find though whenever I am out, especially kids always come to talk to me to practice. Learning a language can be really hard and practice is such an important part. If you have lessons but don't practice then you will never improve. Where will you be traveling to next month? I hope you have a great time!
