Very interesting documentary, I love snakes & reptiles. You should post more full length nature documentaries, I really enjoy them. Viper queens was one of my favorites. I must go to Arizona and see some of the excellent rattlesnake species they have, since they have the most of any state. Thanks Smithsonian channel.

Velvet was NOT adjusting her fangs. She was realigning her jaw that came unhinged when she struck her prey. Snakes don't yawn to "adjust" a FIXED set of fangs, it's their jaws they are yawning to set. Wow

Some snake species look after and protect their young until their first shed. Timber & other rattlesnakes and some other snakes. Females may even stay at the den site for life along with female aunts & cousins. They exhibit much more social bonds than previously thought. It's interesting because they were always portrayed as uncaring mothers who would just as soon eat their young. Which just isn't true. I suspect like with many things, they lied, in part because if they could make animals out to be beings without care or feelings, it was easier to justify killing them or experimenting on them, in the name of science of course. We all know about "trusting the science". I trust what I see with my own eyes more than what they try to force feed us. I've kept reptiles for decades and they're much smarter than most people know. They have unique personalities and quirks. They're fascinating pets. Even if you aren't a fan, knowledge is way better than fearing them. Watch where you step in snake country and don't reach where you can't clearly see. Snakes will flee if they have the chance because they want nothing to do with us. Why would they when they usually lose encounters with humans ? Venom takes energy to produce and is better utilized to secure a meal, not wasted on humans except as a last resort if they feel threatened. So please, simply walk away and leave them be. No one ever got bitten by leaving them alone. 🐍💚

I have gotten to work with or around almost every snake in these clips, and the one that impressed me the most with the speed of their strike is the Puff Adders. They will tag you or their pray in the blink of an eye and I mean that literally. If you blink right before they begin to strike by the time you open your eyes they are back to their defensive coil position.

Are they poisonous
@lifesajoke6965
@lifesajoke6965 2 года назад
@@vivianlunsford4052 Highly venomous, yes. Their venom is cytotoxic, which means it breaks down the tissue of the animal or person they inject it into. Luckily for us humans its slow acting so as long as you get the right antivenin in you as soon as possible your chances of dying are pretty small. But the necrosis around the bite can be terrible, and you then have to worry about secondary infections, and you might even lose fingers/toes depending on where you are bitten. So yeah you really dont wanna take a hit from those guys.

They don't really "unhinge" their jaw - it's sperated on the bottom jaw in the front, with a sort of split. This allows them far more mobility. It's commonly referred to as unhinging but that's a bit misleading.

@@rodolfohilliard1656 Way off the venomous snake talk, but I once witnessed a Great Dane absolutely destroy a Pit Bull in 2001. I was blown away. The Pit Bull was pinned down by the Great Dane. The Great Dane was amazing. It used one paw on the area where the Pitt Bulls jaw would 'lock. The jaws of the Pitt Bull were pried apart. Yes, I know the jaw doesn't truly 'lock'. The Great Dane used its height, size and weight and its other paw began ripping open the Pitt Bulls throat. It was a bloody mess. By the time I got there someone had called the Police and a Vet. As I was walking away the dog owners were both arrested. A few days later I found out the Pitt Bull was destroyed. The only reason the Great Dane wasnt was because the Pitt Bull began the fight. I found a new admiration for the humble Great Dane AND our Aussie Eastern Brown Snake 👍

Most animals don't have the capacity to feel complex emotions like love, many animals are so simple to the point that they only react off of instinct. Hate how some people see animal actions as "evil" or "good", sad or happy, when they're nothing like that. They're just animals and only exist because they have a role in nature.

I had some rescued mongese in India, growing up. Best animal ever! However, its a killer of small things. When that mongoose got mad, even the German Shepherd dog would jump on the couch, and leave him alone till he cooled off. Don't mess with a mongoose. Cute, but deadly. Very loyal to people and gets along well with other animals, except babies, birds, kittens, etc. They meet a swift death. Not a household pet. Snakes are very vulnerable animals. I love snakes. The Mamba here was very scared of the mongoose. It is normally an aggressive and nervous snake, but it looked frozen with fear here. Poor snakey, so sad.

Several animals have evolved some degree of resistance to snake venom. It's an evolutionary arms race. And many humans, including myself, adore snakes. If you understand snakes and their behavior, you don't fear them. They're not mindless biting machines. They will only defend themselves if they feel threatened and cannot flee. They're really fascinating and many people love them. Including venomous snakes that are often some of the most beautiful. I have friends who keep venomous snakes. They also have different personalities.

I have these wild snakes in my garden, they chirp like birds, eat all my plant roots, and climb on to my foot when I'm not paying attention, they also burrow huge huge burrows through my yard. There's probably like hundreds of them. I always here them when I get close, they sound like high - pitched frogs. Sometimes my plants will just randomly wilt, it's the snakes. Not moles, snakes. With no hesitations i ran fast as i can, throw the woods and even my bolo(big knife) no looking back. And my dog ran with me soo fast. It seems the word Shocking is used a lot. In all my 68 years, 35 of those travelling, and working on the front line, nothing has ever shocked me. There have been some surprises, but shocked not once.

That urgent rescue dude was cringe. You can tell the rescue team was annoyed at him. It also looked like he was literally squeezing the head of the snake really hard.

At 31:50 actually she is wrong when she says that their own venom does not work on each other, king cobras are cannibals, sometimes they eat each other, how can a king cobra eat its own kind if the king cobra's venom does not work on other king cobras, and if i'm not mistaken, king cobras are immune to all venomous snakes, other than their own.

No way titanoboa is ever winning against a trex. Modern day anacondas are the largest* snakes we know of, only because water can suppor the majority of their weight. Titanoboa wouldn't be able to raise them selves more than 4 foot off the ground, at max. A T-rex would just see something biting at it's ankle and and just chomp down.

King cobras are my absolute favorite snakes. They are gorgeous, regal, huge & intelligent. They can be tamed & live with ppl though caution is always necessary. Female King cobras actually build nests for their eggs & watches over them. In spite of the fact king cobras prey on other snakes it's difficult not to admire them, their strength & hunting skills. King Cobras can swim very well & are beautifully designed for the world in which they live. King Cobras are unfairly maligned but, they don't deserve the terrible reputation as vicious snakes that chase down ppl. Cobras do not seek out humans they just end up where humans are due to loss of habitat. If ppl are bitten by King Cobras found living near them it's the fault of humans.
