Join Joshua Andersen at the Johnny Appleseed Organic Village as he tours our densest, most biodiverse planting to date. In less than an acre of garden space, we are growing 23 unique species, with as many as 15 coplanted in each tree row! Learn how each species complements and supports its neighbors, how we expect the planting to evolve as the season continues and what we intend to do with the biomass produced by the system.
Included in the planting: pecans, citrus trees, eucalyptus, bananas, yautia, blueberries, jackbean, corn, turmeric, ginger, provider bush beans, Sunn hemp, eddoe, eggplant, tomatoes, cabbage, pigeon pea, bittermelon, watermelon, parkinsonia and three varities of sesbania!

How did the Sunn hemp/bitter melon work out? A self-growing legume trellis sound like a wonderful combination!

It worked out fairly well, although next time we probably won't plant two rows of sunhemp so close together, as it did make harvesting difficult. As the sunn hemp got bigger it formed a dense, narrow tunnel that complicated navigation. We're going to try planting a lower lying crop next it to ensure access.

I thought cabbage was a cool weather plant - I am curious to see how yours grows - my turmeric is coming up now!

We’re definitely taking some risks with this planting, but one of the goals is to push the boundaries of what we think is possible! 😀 Congrats on your turmeric!

Its already hit 90’s here a time or two so turmeric and ginger are both coming up among other things but I am trying more and more myself but not to the scale - thank you for sharing!
