My sister loves the wildlife in her area also. Instead of putting food out, she plants native plants that are natural food sources for the deer. She thinks of herself as the Bambi Buffet. 🥰

As someone currently staying at a shelter, winter gear, pajamas, washable thick blankets, food + kids toys would be a godsend. I also wish shelters had new moving boxes + packing tape, for transitions, instead of large garbage bags. With the higher risks that come with shared belongings, a clean new box to put your things in, is such a big deal.

As someone who has worked in non-profits and received a lot of donations, please always ask if the place actually needs it right now. We often ended up with good stuff (and a lot of junky stuff) that was just a burden for us to declutter afterward, because well-meaning people donated stuff, assuming we needed it when we didn't.

You are a blessing from God. I don’t know any other way to explain how much help you have been lately. I don’t know what I would do without you.

Great video with suggestions I wouldn’t have thought of - thank you! Re feeding deer - rather than food, put out a salt lick well away from your house (should be available from that animal feed store - probably not cheap, but will likely last all winter. This will also help keep them away from roads, because they will have a safer source of salt). A water source is also a good idea, if you can manage it. Corn and molasses are not good for them, and, as you’ve been told, can attract rats (also probably bears, if they’re in your area). Next spring, contact your local conservation area and ask what to plant to feed and shelter the wildlife you want. Avoid using pesticides/herbicides, and even some kinds of fertilizer on your property. And as others have said, it’s dangerous for the deer to teach them to come right up to humans - it may get them killed. As darling as they are, they’re wild animals - ask local experts how to encourage them with natural, safe food sources.

My local animal rescues also run auctions to raise money to pay for vets etc. Craft supplies seem to do really great in the auctions. Decluttering does double duty - money for the cat rescue, and then the recipient gets the joy of crafting. And often they use it to create things for shelters and homes. Its the gift that keeps on giving !

I love that you highlight the need for the items that it might be hard to let go of. That switches the focus from clinginess to empathy to those in greater need than ouselves.

I take craft supplies to our local children’s hospital. They love receiving them. Just another idea! It’s a way I payback for the care they’ve given my child and grandchild!

Craft supplies for nursing homes: I know residents, who enjoy using donated yarn to knit and crochet items, which is then given to homelessness organisations and charities that sell it to benefit their cause. It makes these elderly people feel that they are still contributing, that they have value to society. And they become part of a community of fellow crafters and volunteers. (Note: I am not saying that they *should* do this. The ball of yarn has just as much value as a fidget and memory tool for a person with dementia. What I am saying is that many elderly people find great purpose in this charity work).

Nursing homes, public schools, shelters, & other nonprofits are great places to donate to. Absolutely beautiful Cass, thank you!! ❤

We just adopted a shelter dog a couple of weeks ago. She walks around with her stuffy that she brought home from the shelter! She sleeps with the stuffy, too. Please donate soft toys if you have them!!

Sending this to my mom - she and I were decluttering blankets and such today (pillows were yesterday's task), and I made it clear to her that just because a blanket/towel/sheet isn't in "gently used" condition doesn't necessarily mean it can't be donated, because animal shelters will take it even if it has a few small holes, just so long as it's good and clean. Apparently she wasn't aware of that option. Another thing to add to the list would be donating musical instruments to schools - we have some instruments that we inherited from my dad's side of the family that none of us are ever going to play (everyone in our family plays at least one instrument, but these are ones that we don't and never will play), like a tenor sax that needs some repair (it needed it before it ever came into our possession) and a good tune up, so the plan is to get it repaired and tuned up, then donate it to a local school that is in need of them for their band program (almost every public school - and a lot of the private schools as well - near us has some sort of band program, so there's no shortage of need), since a lot of band kids/their families can't afford to buy their own instruments, and thus rent them from the school instead.

I just helped my adult children sort through the family games that we have collected for 20 years. We kept our favorites and took them to Goodwill. My daughter had a subscription to Bark Box which created a large collection of dog toys that her small dog was never going to be able to use. She sent a whole grocery bag full of toys to the local pet shelter. It was a nice Black Friday work day! Thanks for Cass we did not buy a thing for ourselves.

Rats are precious animals, too! They are very social and cute animals.

Love all your donation suggestions! I always watch your videos to the end. Do not place food outside, because unwanted rodents will set up a tent and camp overnight! If there's one, there's 100 more. 😊

Thank you for bringing up retirement homes as i believe people forget about the elderly and what they need as i do see a lot of people who just lay around with no purpose or even family's to help inspire them.

Hi Cass, Love this video, it reminded me I have plenty of craft stuff everything from brushes,paints Wooden cut outs,large and all sizes, yarn,I can’t stand the thought of my kids throwing my stuff out, I have a bunch of coats,looks like I have a bunch of leopards in the closet,capes short or long I do definitely believe in helping our animals in the shelters. I always collect blankets and toys even Beds to donate,I did last year too. After my furbaby died I lost my mind, I felt like it anyway,,I had just lost my husband and I felt like I’d go crazy,but my little daisy saved me, she loved him as well,, We needed. Each other,then she passed as I was in the hospital ,she stayed with my daughter, Then a couple of days after surgery, I called to find how my baby was, I kept asking how’s my baby My daughter kept ignoring me, then I knew something was wrong, then she told me. Well the nurses brought me meds to calm me down,but no matter what they did ,I couldn’t stop crying I still miss her so much, and Lady my next baby, I adopted her. I was so lonely, didn’t think I needed Another dog but I wanted one. Well my daughter came by one night, I knew something was up. She never comes over, then my door bell rung, no one visits, it was late at night,dark. She said well see who’s at the door. I’m kind of scared at night,to answer the door, it was a young couple,with A dog on lease, she came on in, run through the house looking around, then she jumped in my chair, like she was home and she knew this was it. We fell in love right away. She was perfect, Best behaved,best trained ,best everything. she was ten years old, her human parents were both Past,this girl was fostering her until they could find her a home. This lady has two Chihuahuas, but They didn’t like Lady, so they decided they couldn’t keep her. It was just meant for me to have Her. I had her three wonderful years, she loved car rides, playing in the water,sitting in my lap,then She got sick,several times,the ER Vets wanted to keep her a couple of days to check her over,see What was going on with her, He showed me the sonogram, she had something hanging from her Pancreas, he said he really wanted to keep her a couple of days, I live on SS, not much money. I knew if she stayed it would be a fortune, so I told him I’d take her to her own Vet,so a friend Took me, I had no idea how to find this place, he agreed with the other dr after seeing her X-rays And paperwork, she stared feeling,or rather acting a lot better for a couple of days then, she want Here no more. I miss her and Daisy so much, but I try to help out at Christmas time, I’m gonna Get some dog food to take along, with the blankets.it been really cold lately,and I think they would enjoy having a new toy or anything to stay warm, they don’t care if its Christmas or not. So don’t forget the lonely shelters. You just made me think about what else I can share,,I know some one Else would really enjoy it as I did. I am a magazine junkie and I get many beautiful magazines each month Those are good to donate to nursing homes, both for reading and for Arts and Crafts Also., I get tons of pretty calendars in the mail. I only use one calendar. I imagine that nursing home residents would like a pretty calendar for their room. I had never thought of that before. Thanks Cass, for the inspiration

Just a caveat for donating, if what you want to donate is in bad shape from low quality, usage, or age, please do not donate. Throw it in the trash where it belongs. I had a job of sorting through donations. People donate things to get rid of them instead of considering the actual need of the people who may receive them. 60% of the stuff that was donated needed to actually be trashed. At that point people are creating a burden instead of helping as they intended. I love your recommendations for donating. There is so much need and it’s awesome when you see a gently used item go to someone who has nothing else. Great video!

I had two winter coats that I was not wearing anymore and I donated the 2 winter coats to Burlington Coat Drive. I felt so happy that I donated those coats and I made space in my closet. I felt so good knowing that someone who can't buy a coat will be warm for the winter.

Thank you for the suggestions of how to help others during the holidays. I can't scrapbook anymore due to arthritis in my hands. It's hard to let go of the supplies because it's something my mom (who has passed on), and I used to do. This message is what I needed to hear, I'm going to gather some up today to donate.

I recently learned of something in my state. We now have craft reuse stores. The goal is to get craft supplies out of landfills. The stores take donations and then artists and teachers and crafters can shop at discounted prices, like a thrift store just for craft supplies. YIPPY!!!

The last 2 years, as I've gotten out Christmas decor AND when packing it up, I put in a marked bag for the local animal shelter's thrift store anything I no longer want. I keep the bag in my closet and add nice items to it all year as I declutter. Then around Nov. 1 I donate it. This is the time when people are looking for Christmas items for their own homes.

In many places it is illegal to feed deer. One reason is that their populations have exploded, and they are destroying native vegetation, including trees. Check with your local game commission for information. It is also not a good idea to try to "make friends" with wild animals, because they need to have a healthy fear of humans, who are often their predators. The best way to enjoy the deer is to sit in silence and view them through binoculars.

Yes you are making a rat paradise in your yard. And once they are in your yard they will be in your house😖. I learned the hard way with my chicken feed. Planting shrubs that deer like to browse is a great way to attract them and that also invites birds and rabbits.

Buy Nothing is also a place to share extra with your neighbors - several people in my group have mentioned how tight money is right now, so offering nice stuff they can gift their family members would help a lot. My local YWCA takes unused journals and notebooks which many of us have in abundance - very good for people escaping domestic violence to process their feelings or just to make notes. I always check the websites or call to see what’s needed and what they can’t take, especially with opened or used things.

I donate most of my items to the local homeless shelter (one drop-off for both men's and women/children's shelters). They take household items, too. I've donated a lot of soap, cleaners, kitchen items, etc. They not only serve the homeless community, but these donated items are made available to anyone in the community that may need them, for free! I believe our food bank also takes clothing, as well (when you pick up food, you can also pick out some clothing if needed). Anything that can't be donated to the shelter, I donate to Goodwill.

We have 2 bird baths that I keep fresh water in sometimes several times a day. In the winter we have a bird bath heater as well so they can easily get a drink even if it’s super cold and everything is frozen. We enjoy feeding the birds too. An ornithologist in my state actually recommended spreading suet or peanut butter on tree bark to feed the birds. I’d never heard of that before! I found that interesting. I worked in a nursing home many years ago, and all I can say is those residents loved to party! We were constantly having big parties with different themes like western, Mardi Gras, roaring 20s etc with live music, appetizers, drinks etc. We had bingo, movie night, dance parties. We regularly took them out for live music. The number of crafts, cooking or baking projects happening all the time. I could go on and on! I worked a lot with Alzheimer’s residents and they were some of my favorites. They loved having fun and socializing.

I have an environmental science degree, I think taming wild animals is unusual... You are on the right track with food but I'd start small- the rats will find it first if you spread loads of the stuff and don't clean it away when it gets to a point the deer won't eat it. You need to provide hiding places and habits for things if you want them to come so bird/bat boxes, areas of shrubs and native plants (weedy patches) leave fallen leaves and log piles, insect homes. You need all the wildlife to get the good stuff. ❤ This was a great post inspiring video... I've been hesitant to watch since temu and some other ad intensive ones, but (even though you did have an ad) this fet like Cas was back and on form ❤

Thank you for the inspiration. It is so easy to fill up your trunk with stuff and take it to Goodwill. And there's nothing wrong with that. But putting together care packages for women in shelters is much more meaningful. It fosters gratitude for what we have... and it requires some thought too. Yes, they need warm clothes and hygiene products. But a bottle of nail polish, a book and some candy wouldn't hurt either. We aren't rolling in money, but I have a man who treats me like gold, a fridge full of food, and more clothes than I need. It's good to spread the love a bit. (I believe charity should be anonymous. But you don't know me :-) and I just wanted to say great job on getting people like me off our butts and into action.)

Love the donation suggestions! I’d be careful about encouraging the deer population in your yard! We live in a suburban (or sub-suburban) area, and I recently got my first tick bite, probably from hanging laundry on the clothesline. Deer ticks are becoming a huge concern in our area of Atlantic Canada, and I’m on the watch for a bullseye rash for another week, fingers crossed I can avoid Lyme disease. My local pharmacy provided prophylactic antibiotics, but they are only about 40% effective.

We have lived in the Texas hill country since 2019, my husband started naming his favorite wild deer, we have sika, white tail and axis, they are now grandmas…we know which deer are the siblings, aunts, uncles it is so funny when guest come as we call all of them by name! One of the fawns was “Emily” until the little antlers started sprouting….so now we have an Emilio!! If you get to Texas we would love to host you!! Also, I never throw food in the garbage….just throw it to the deer…..you haven’t lived until you have seen them eating spaghetti noodles!! Hysterical the only thing they do not eat is red onions. My grandsons made “lap blankets” and we have an appt at the local nursing home Wednesday to hand deliver them to the residents!! Love you Cass!

I love the idea of donating and regifting. I have a friend who has a porch pick up things for families in her community… people can drop off gently used (if not new) toys, books, games…and even unused wrapping supplies. And then anyone in the area that is in need of gifts for their family or know of a family that doesn’t have a lot…. It’s there for the taking…no charge. She’s a teacher and does this for her community that she loves and cares about. I love to support her and this great cause. If I can’t get things to her…I take it to my local Goodwill. Merry Christmas Cas! I don’t know what to tell you about the deer and nature outside. I could totally use that Epson label maker. The ones you showed in this video are so pretty! Love all of these! Our home is pretty clutter free at this point...however I really keep an eye on our local buy nothing site to see what people are requesting. I use that as a guide to go through the house looking to see if we can fill a need.

As someone who lives in northern WI for the summers, we get deer in our yard all the time. They absolutely LOVE Hosta plants! They will eat those down to the ground. Bear will come and eat your corn, so I wouldn't put that out. I think deer and bear are creatures of habit so if you have the plants or the salt licks they will keep coming back. I've never been able to get close to our deer, but if I walk slowly they don't turn and run, but will just walk away. I 'talk' very gently and quietly to them as well. Wait until spring when you see the fawns! OMG they are so cute! Love your videos!!

I grew up on a 138 acer farm and we had raccoons that would come up and eat cat food on the porch when we would feed the cats. They were so adorable with their tiny hands and then they ended up having babies so we had baby raccoons and cats all over the porch and I loved it! We would also get wild turkey, deer, coyotes, and every once in a while, when it was really foggy, we would get Elk and I LOVE the sounds they make!

Omg more than 5 deer?! Hahaha! I think planting specific things in your gardens will really help! There are deer friendly plants, and also some to attract hummingbirds or butterflies or specific birds. Could be a fun project!

You can actually teach birds to feed from your hands. It's a truly amazing experience!! Here's what you do: find an area in your back yard that's a little unkempt....a large bush or shrub is perfect. Every day at the same time, go outside with some bird seed and sit very still close to the bush with seed in your outstretched hand for 15-20 minutes. After doing this consistently for a few days, you will start noticing the birds approaching. At first they will perch in the branches nearby but before long, they will land on your hand and eat. It's remarkable to be so close to a wild animal.

I can't love this enough. Thank you for reminding us about the importance of donating, any time of year, but especially now.

I've been involved in animal welfare/rescue for many years, while we love getting blankets and towels, we really have no need for sheets so might be worth checking with the organization you're donating to if they can use them. We also partner with Meals on Wheels to provide dog and cat food as well as cat litter.

So really happy you have so many supporters. I personally approve of decluttering. BUT I am a maximalist and I doubt that that will ever change.

Aww you're so kind donating your stuff to people in need. Your video made me cry! I donate most of my stuff to Red Cross UK and my Mum collects it for me as I don't drive. I've actually got a box of craft supplies that I don't use which I will donate to a Mental Health Drop In Centre. I used to work in Mental Health and I know they will make good use of it.

We have a Senior Center in our town that could benefit from craft and yarn supplies. Great video Cas. I once had a bird feeder by our front porch until our neighbor said he saw a big rat! Now i have a bird bath and put out suet. We also have bushes the birds like.

RE: Feeding wild animals... It takes patience and a bit of consistency. Put a feeder out first and watch ... when the deer come, maybe they have a routine? When you see them coming consistently, (daily-ish) sit quietly in a chair some distance away. They'll get used to you there. Gradually move the chair closer to the feeder. When you get closer, put a tray of feed on your lap, or maybe a bucket of feed near your chair. Sooner or later one brave one will take feed from your lap and the others will see it's ok after a while. I did this very successfully with birds and eventually had them eating from my hand, perching on my arms, etc. So fun!!!! Patience!

This reminds me of the conversation I tried to have with my 90 year old mom a couple of weeks ago. She’s had a stroke, some dementia and some health issues and now needs more and more of my help with her crafts that I am not good at as well as needing to manage a lot. She likes to keep a lot of Someday stuff and I was trying to explain to her that if it was stuff she needed me to manage, it has to be paired down to what I can handle like I do the other stuff in the house.

Besides nursing homes also keep in mind public schools for donations of arts/crafts supplies. We all know public school teachers aren't paid enough but the supply budget for art teachers to try to stretch a whole school year is usually woefully inadequate. Many art teachers dig into their own income to supply their classes. The more low income the school or district, the more the supplies will be appreciated.

Hahahaha, love staying around to the end! I’ve been putting bird seed out for about two years now. The crows come by and call all their bird friends. We also have a chonky squirrel visitor 😂 😂😂

For the deer, consider planting an apple tree. We have three in our back yard and the deer hop over two fences with dogs in the yards just to get to the apples that fall on the ground. They also LOVE rose bushes and berry bushes.

When we lived in a more rural area, the deer always came running when our crepe myrtles were in bloom. They love to eat those plants, so I made sure we had a bunch of them planted.

Generally, friends don't happen overnight. Continue- rattle the bag, walk out around your area, talk in a normal voice as you spread the food (inviting them in), do anything you can to 'build their trust.' Yes, we see these people (as you mentioned) who have all different animal groups that respond to them, BUT we don't know how long it took them to get there. Have patience- keep going-

Thank you for these decluttering tips. I'm getting ready to tackle my sewing studio again. Great reminder of the craft supplies going to nursing homes. Recently broke my wrist so now I need to "get real" on the craft supplies and let things go. Don't feed the wildlife. The vermin you do not want will take over. And if you have any flowers or outdoor plants, those will be eaten, not just the corn. And getting RID of those critters it much harder to do when they've been riding the GRAVY TRAIN! It is so important to donate to our local nursing homes and shelters... our unwanted items but also our time. ❤ Please, please, please do not encourage wildlife into your home. They can be dangerous as well as destructive. For every cute video someone posts of befriending a wild deer, you can find another of attacks by them. They are truly beutiful and majestic creatures but are better viewed from afar. If you really want to encourage them to come to your yard, consider planting something they can forage. A word of warning, they will eat that and everything else that you plant that you don't want eaten. 😢

Love, love love you! I would suggest asking about feeding your wildlife. Once you start, they can starve if you stop. And be sure the dog is flea/tick protected, and don't let her eat the deer poop!

Well... not one where some people are poor and homeless but a world where everyone share and help eachother, where everyone is seen and thought of. A crabapple tree takes a few years to grow and bear fruit but deer love it.

Goodwill is a for profit business like Value village. It is good to donate because people can find low cost items but they dont do much for the community.

We just use feed corn, deer apples, salt/mineral blocks also put a screw threw a lid of peanut butter, then attach the lid to a tree, then screw the jar back on the lid lastly cut the bottom out of the jar of peanut butter and they love it.

I did not know i could donate used cleaning supplies to animal shelters! That is super helpful i have too many i dont like but didn't want to throw away or down the drain wastefully! Thank you!

Plants! flowers to attract butterflies and bees, find out what deer eat in your area, and only add the corn to supplement. Plants also provide cover. Wild animals feel exposed when there isn't immediate cover to duck into when they get scared. A salt lick is also good for deer. And a clean water source. There's a local church I like donating to. They have a pantry and allow people to come in and get what they may need. The thrift stores in my area, especially Goodwill, are extremely expensive.

My aunt is an elderly. Last week we were talking about stuff to do. She lives with her sister's family and has low mobility now. Her eyes sparked when she asked me about romance novels. Since I know nothing of the subject, she mentioned an author and I have found a bundle of ebooks. How she likes it and I assume she can hear it with her phone because she sends me videos and stuff like that.

Always ask a charity what they will accept or need 1st. Space is usually the biggest constraint. Or some items are just not safe to use for their clients etc. I worked at an elderly care facility and people tried to bring candy. They meant well, but most residents were diabetic, on specialty diets and couldnt chew the candy without it being a choking hazard. So please, ALWAYS CALL 1ST.

You do not want deer in your house. If you want to have nice flowers and other greenery in your yard, if they become too friendly, they will be up on your porches eating everything in sight - our first year here I lost two huge pots of mums overnight! Perhaps plant some stuff a bit farther out in the yard that deer like to browse (they love lilacs, BTW). The only reason I can have a garden is because part of our property is totally surrounded by a 6 foot fence with barbed wire on top (we also have bears and lions). But we do have lots of deer and wild turkeys in the unfenced areas all around us and they are very fun to watch - had a mama deer and two babies take up rather permanent residence this year, although they have joined up with our local herd for the winter. We also have elk, which you definitely don't want in your yard, but are magnificent. We live in the foothills of northern Colorado.
