Great series Todd! Loved hearing Chris's perspective. He was spot on about taking your life in your own hands in Laos. Here in the US folks want to speak on personal responsibility, freedom, and "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps", but I've never seen a culture of personal responsibility so strong as when I went to Laos. You can do whatever you want, but if you mess up or get hurt that's on YOU, so just don't be an idiot and you'll be fine. I felt a much greater sense of freedom in Laos than I ever have in America. Especially the freedom to live slowly and simply, without being consumed by the rat race.

I was in Laos during the war. I worked for the US Government (enough said). I left in 1975. I came back in 1982 but could only stay 30 days. I returned in 1994 and stayed 50 days. I want to return to Laos now since I really loved the country.

Todd, A wonderful and insightful look at Lao Life with Chris . Thank You so much Todd for having our questions answered. It seems to Harriet and i that the adjustments that the Lao people will have to make are going to be a lot less stressful post-covid than what's happening in the west, I think the west is not good at making adjustments in their lifestyles post covid. It's not going to be the same prior to covid. I guess what we're trying to say and what we got out of the interview is. Lao Life is making adjustments . Quoting Chris " it's Human Doing vs. Human Living" Hope you and Neenee will visit Chris and his family again. They are wonderful human beings. Sending you both lots of love💖💖 Jim and Harriet. Wow enjoyed those 3 episodes, what an insightful and honest chat with Chris. Contentment is the first word that comes to mind with Chris. The simply life makes me envious. We in the west bust our hump everyday....just to be more stressed about life. And yet fulfilment comes from something so much more raw and simple. Keep up the great work. Many thanks to Chris as well.

'LAOS is just like North Korea' had been my view after a week backpacking in Luang Prabang a decade ago, so i took the bus right back to Yun nan. This channel educated me on this aspect that i know i was naive. Many of us know Thailand a lot ,even Cambodia(very negative recently over chinese medias due to some horrifying criminal activities involved chinese citizens). But The LAOS you showed on internet is a free ,relaxing and interesting country worth exploring. Keep up the good work which is serving as a window i think .

That's a great story about Vang Vien. Tragic but informative. Before my trip there about 5 years ago, all I heard about and saw were all the party stories of Vang Vien. I was so excited to see the hype but unfortunately, there wasn't much of it. I would have been too old to really join in on the craziness but nonetheless, was a very beautiful and scenic place to be.

Just brilliant, I have traveled a lot over the years. I am very dependent and have a great personality. I have mixed with people from all walks of life during my travels. Australia was a great country once, but not anymore. I was wondering how much it would cost to live at Chris's home stay? Would I have to build my own home or is there accommodation there? also how would I get a visa to stay in Laos. I'm sorry to bother you with all these questions Todd, but I have complete trust in you......Have a great day...Jeff
@chrisperkins7331

Questions are never a bother. I don't have a home stay at the moment as I have to be a registered company to do that. It is illegal to have anyone who is not family stay at your house. I am hoping in the future to have that done but to be honest I would prefer to have someone else create one on our land.

When I was in Laos some 20 years ago if you wanted to marry a Laos women you had to get special permission from the Laos government. At that time there wasn’t much chance of meeting one , there wasn’t many bars that I can recall most of women’s were tribal . They used to sell opium in the street markets quite openly . I hope Laos does not sell its soul to the dollar, that remains to be seen .

Howdy Todd,,after listening to Chris for an hour 40,I have to say I agree with most,,not all,,but most of what he says. In a lot of ways, the man is chock full of luck,,but he has also worked his ass off. I liked him because he's intelligent,,he thinks. Very similar to you, mate! There has to be an intelligent (or at the least,,,should be) REaction to every action. It's the dumbass reactions that fuck things up ( polifuckinticians) I think his land lease idea is brilliant.,now,,,where to find a beautiful pig raising woman to take care of things while I write and dabble in minimalist art,,( minimalist part is the talent) lol ! In my visits to asia i found that there is a difference.... rights and freedom between asia and australia.... where i live in mackay qld, if i want to build a small shed in my back yard i must get local govt to give me permission , inspections etc and i must ask the people living around me if they object..... in thailand or laos you just build it, my brother in law built two new homes on his property... a new home for himself and a small home for the daughter of the family living next door.... rights / freedom....... if the govt wants to knock over my home and build a new road, then i have the right to say no and go to court.... remember the movie THE CASTLE... in thailand .... if the govt wants to knock over your home, you must leave before the bulldozers arrive... rights / freedom

What you say is true. However it is easy to make sure you don't build where they are going to need a new road. I can also tell you that as long as you have a "gold Paper" on the land (in Lao) you have to be compensated. In Australia the restriction are for everybody no exceptions.

A guy after my own heart! I have met many like him in Kenya, Tanzania, Cambodia, Laos, and in the countryside of Thailand. Unfortunately, his are a dying breed. England now only produces genderless cretins obsessed with pronouns and who think two weeks a year in Benidorm is adventurous. I fail to understand why anyone would ever *choose* to stay anywhere in the grotty, cold, wet, windy, dark, expensive, and dangerous West/northern hemisphere. Life is *NOT* a rehearsal! Life is for living, for pursuing dreams, for living in the sun, for making your own destiny! Life is for sitting on the floor eating great food with nice people! Most Westerners will wake up one day, look at themselves in the mirror, realise they are 60, 65, or 70, and it will then - and only then - dawn on them that it is too late to do anything with their life! Who wants to wake up every morning for 25 or 30 years knowing you owe the bank a king's ransom (a 'mortgage')? Pursue your dreams - mortgage free - in a hot, sunny, friendly, cheap, and safe country!

I think the people who stay put are trained to think that life outside is dangerous, so they surround themselves with stuff for protection. I have emigrated 3 times, with no regrets. Life is a journey not a destination.
