I really like Charles and I hope we see him from time to time in the videos. The question for me would be things like, how did he meet his wife? I'm sure I have other questions, just don't have'em locked and loaded at the moment. Charles has got himself a nice place there I wish him many years of the good life.

As an expat living in Siem Reap/Cambodia, I can say this historical city next to Angkor Wat is very safe and relax to live . I have been to Phnom Penh several times. What I can say is that these two cities are the total opposite. Siem Reap feels more like a laid-back town in the countryside once you get out of the touristic areas. Unlike in Phnom Penh, there are no tall buildings here due to the existing construction restrictions (to preserve the historical sight around Angkor Wat). Phnom Pehn, on the other hand, has the vibe of a big city with dynamism and chaos coexisting side by side. The Chinese investment is a lot more visible in Phnom Penh than in Siem Reap with all those tall buildings under construction. However if you don't like the hustle and bustle of a big city, Cambodia has a lot of relax and safe cities/towns to offer such as Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampot, and many others with their cost of living significantly cheaper than in Phnom Pehn. Anyway, Vientiane/Laos seems a nice place to live as well.

Great video. Charles seems like an interesting guy. I have been living in northern Cambodia for 3 years now, rent a 4 bedroom - 2 bathroom villa for US$130 a month with a long time girlfriend and her mother and her 10 year old nephew. Great lifestyle. Going to Phnom Penh to buy a Chinese made 300 cc moto with a trailer and travel around the places in Cambodia I have not been too yet. bit of work to make the trailer into a "mobile home" but looking forward to travelling further afield (Thailand, Laos and Vietnam) for further adventures.

I am trying to make up my mind between Vietnam , Cambodia and Laos , leaning more towards Cambodia because of ease of their visa systems, but I love Vietnam more, been there 3 times already before the lockdown, been to Laos once, never visited Cambodia. A vlogger once said go where you're treated best , these south east Asians really treat the tourist well. I feel Thailand is becoming picky , wanting only rich tourists. Good job Todd as always.

Never been to Lao but have lived in Thailand and Cambodia. Thailand and Cambodia are very different. Cambodia is the wild west of Asia and I love that about it. If mod-cons and infrastructure are your priority,, then you're better off Thailand.. No SEA country beats the ease of the Cambodian visa system though.

Interesting guy, no doubt he would have a lot of great stories to tell. So what are the differences in the cost of living between Lao, Thailand and Cambodia? I've seen a few of your videos where you mention somethings but it would good to get actual comparisons. I've lived and worked in Thailand for 15 years and the cost of living has increased significantly here. Not least of which is the exchange rate, however many things are not cheap anymore in Thailand.

Definitely need a plan if retiring in Asia, an investment strategy or other means of well structured, continued financial income. Meeting a local life partner who can help create and structure your life path together makes all the difference. Luckily for us westerners our money certainly does go a long way in Laos, which allows a broad scope in which to create and thrive here. 👍

Thailand has attracted a lot 'for free & affordable foreigners' from 2010 - 2019. The hospitals and medication was cheap or affordable whenever I had the need. Thailand came up with taxes, rules and regulation for all kinds initially. That is for good reasons, when foreigners don't work and contribute, but become business savy fulltime stayer. Some one needs to pay for good public service. If your retirement funds don't cut it, you are basically a medical tourist for many years. This is why Europe is in such a mess. Its the same anywhere eventually. The local cash economy is healthy throughout SEA for the locals, but this changes when too many look for cheap and affordable in SEA.
@BangTaoBeach
@BangTaoBeach Год назад
You don't know what you are talking about in regards to Thailand. To get a retirement visa in Thailand you need to initially put 800,000 baht in a Thai bank and jump through many additional hoops hoops to get that visa. Even with a one year retirement visa you are still required to report to immigration every 90 days. Visas for long term stay in Thailand are very hard to come by. I have over 25 years of Thailand experience and 15 years of living in the country. You don't.

It's a shame really, it never had to be like this. Biting the hand that feeds you never works out in the end. The whole world is hurting, not just Thailand, and many would've returned once things eased down, but not now, not with the greedy direction they've taken.

@@NowinLao The Thai government is now run by stupid senile soldiers who have no clue how to conduct an economy or foreign policy, they really are clueless, they were always joke soldiers, now they are sad foolish politicians. They are scared to make decisions because they fear embarrassment, you see them decide and then do the opposite, trying to have it both ways and failing at both, and the Thai absolutely abhor weak leaders. They will follow a confident man, whether politician or king, who can bring results. As long as Thais have been Thais, their leaders are expected to make life incrementally better every day for their people, if not they are shit canned. The present military regime is a joke and all Thais know it. The pandemic has revealed the incompetent governments all over the world to indeed be incompetent, even to those most skeptical. Thais never have control over their governments but they don't have to like them. And in their panic over a destroyed economy and dying people, they really don't give two shits for foreigners who want to live in Thailand. They don't even want the tourists back, the whole tourist industry that was the cream of the Thai economy has left a bad taste in their mouth because they have had their nose rubbing in it, they know many of the tourists come to screw the NE girls who flood Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, making them them nothing more than pimps. They now claim they just want Chinese, fooling themselves with the Chinese instead of the big nose whites, that they have some love for Thai culture and will bring somehow more money than the Westerners when they are all pig farmers on a cheap vacation who are unruly, stingy, shit in the streets and climb on the Buddhas.

At the mire touristy destinations you will find bars, but in the less traveled village areas, no. You can buy beer at just about any shop and drink anywhere so I guess the locals don't bother. It's mainly restaurants if they're going out to drink.
