How does it cope? 1500 km (~1000 miles) on the Evolve e-skateboard! This 5th episode of my detailed e-board test & review series examines the board over the course of this impressive distance and talks about when to replace which parts. Furthermore, we take a look at known issues and possible solutions. Again, I hope this compilation and the work behind it is useful to you. Please leave me a THUMBS UP - happy riding! :)

This is a great video for people, like myself, curious about electric longboards and the EVOLVE line in particular. Thank you for taking the trouble to document your experience after 1500 km. So many videos are "first impression" or "out of the box" and, while done with good intention, are of limited usefulness. Not so with yours. Lots of good user experience, performance and maintenance feed-back. Thanks again. Happy trails!

My recommendation regarding bearings on my Evolve (Pintail Gen1): After a few tests with bearings including expensive ceramics I switched to "Zealous" bearings - they are really phantastic, maintenance free, water proof and near zero resistance. My non-electric longboards roll away with them on even flat surfaces ! Zealous have integrated speed rings and spacers so you can tighten the screws to the max- wheels still spinning freely - but I had to modify the drive gear a bit so the spacer extension does not touch inside - spacer does not spinn but drive gear and wheel. BTW Zealous were voted as best bearing by some skater forums - just my 2cents.

Nice one dude. Thanks for your excellent reviews. I am still using my AT with my dial a driver biz. The board is still in great condition and has done over 500km. 55 jobs done since Aug 2015 the board has helped me generate over $2,500, which may not be substantial however, its more about testing the feasibility factor of using the board to make money. I'm looking forward to your next video re - extending range.

@arthurcurry1910
@arthurcurry1910 8 лет назад
can you tell me exactly, what brand you use to clean/lubricate your bearings please?
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Arthur Curry There are 3 options to lubricate your bearings: Wax, special lube (more liquid), and "oil" (very liquid). While the first lasts longest, you need to run in the bearings for around 100 km or so. Special lube is best of both worlds (lasts long and lubes right from the start), and oil is easiest. The thing is: You lube with oil once, then you more or less need to continue. Also, if you don't clean the outside of your bearings properly before lubing, the oil may wash dirt inside, thus killing the bearing. Personally, I like the oil: very good lube, no run-in time, usually no disassembly of the bearing. I clean them regularly anyway (when dirty), so that's fine for me. I use a brand called "Ballistol" - quite common for many things. Could recommend it, but there's many similar such lubes out there. Dry Fluid will likely also work.

My board was badly (and wrong) assembled (bought in the USA), it also got the first part that broke due to fatigue cracks after less than 3 month!! Badly engineered when it come to worst case scenarios imo! The air wheels are probably pretty helpful to keep the parts alive, the street version wears up VERY fast!

Outstanding, thoroughly informative video. I just discovered your videos as I've been considering buying one of these boards. May I ask where you purchased those replacement tires/wheels? I was worried they would be odd, hard to find and would have to pay high price for original Evolve replacement ones (since they get the most wear and tear). Again, great vid's. The heli's lifting the woman blew my mind. LOL
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Francisco Borrego Thanks for the great comment Francisco. The tyres/wheels aren't produced by Evolve, they just buy them from 3rd party; in this case MBS Mountainboards. This means you'll get them anywhere, although the price is pretty much the same across vendors. The tubes as such are even more standard stuff, they're the ones used e.g. in wheel chairs. I bought most stuff from Evolve, but for testing purposes a bunch of wheel chair tubes (all my many flat tyres were with "Evolve" tubes); so far zero difference, exact same thing. Bottom line: the replacement parts aren't hard to find, but the price is indeed high and - except for the tubes - not really different across vendors of a certain region/country. Hope this info helps.

Np. If you are there, can you please tell me does that carbon deck bends? How electronics and li-on cells handle it?
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
There is a slight bend in the deck, but nothing compared to the bamboo/bustin or any good longboard you'd know. Consequently, no problem for the cells inside. On the bamboo/bustin, all the electronics/battery is inside a tray, which is fixed to the deck with screws, but there's sort of a rubber mat inbetween. Meaning it allows for more flex than on the Carbon. Carving with it feels better then with the Carbon, also the agility is higher (but less stability at higher end speeds and offroad).
@Arek_R.
@Arek_R. 8 лет назад
Thanks again! I'm asking because I want to build my very own esk8 where deck will be made out of fiberglass(perhaps some carbon tubes inside). And all electronics/cells will be inside that deck(3cm thick).

cool project! Im about 2000 in and though Id share my experience with my carbon street.I found my phone was causing radio drop outs the most (I still take my phone with me on airplane mode), also the connectors on the radio circuit board in the tail vibrate loose, more so on the carbon street a dap of hot glue on the plug and conector fixed mine , I also use the range extender(power on, wait till the remote binds, press power button 4 times fast , light flashes fast ,4 meter range) . I'm quite convinced the drop outs are interference .I have had drop out in exactly the same spot .Dont get me wrong I love this board the most out of the handful i have tried but the fail safe full brake at 40 km per hour isn't nice and is not for a beginner . As for the battery Its well know that lipo battery's don't do well in low temperatures, its best to store the board out of the cold (room temp) before use . Also if you flaten the battery dont store it flat ,charge then store . Only charge lipos at room temp were possible , on cold mornings I would lightly warm my battery's in for rc planes for much better performance all round.

will you share a video of how to balance the wheels with the weights. I have some wobble issues when i go over 12 mph the rear and front get shakes. I thought it might be the dampers being too soft but now i am seeing this guys board do the same thing. I can ride through the wobbles but it makes things sketchy at full throttle. It would be epic if i could go full throttle without the wobbles. I can go full throttle all day long with the skate wheels with no wobbles. The big wheels have a mind of there own when you go over 12 mph.

Storing it fully charged as Evolve advises is a sure way to diminish your battery performance. // @Joni: as mentioned earlier, plse. check your G+ privacy settings, it is not possible to answer to your comments directly!

@shaneshannon434

+Blake Garvey i wouldn't call these details all problems... its just wear & tare maintenance that will be more common with AT kit... the street kit will probably have different results overtime. a BWM 5 series will probably take less of a beating than a Chevy Silverado... you have to have the right expectations with each board :) its soooooo worth it to deal with when it comes to these factors!

I'm sure the wearing down of the drive wheel teeth is from the friction when hitting the brake. i loosened my drive belt so I'm sure this is something i will also encounter eventually. i agree with the air deflation you brought up, kinda baffling....I'm still the only guy/person in Houston riding one of these things, or so it looks like... and I'm ok with that B) Great review btw!
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Shane Shannon Thanks for the comment and for sharing your experience Shane. That's always cool and interesting for everybody around here. Re. the wearing down of the drive wheel, I also thought it might be due to braking but when taking a second look, this seems unlikely. Because in that case the teeth would be worn on their other side. We fly lots of R/C helicopters and there you find similar wear patterns, caused by one gear pushing the other, and also by belts running over pulleys (basically same as on the Evolve). Normally you'd expect the belt to wear much faster than a metal gear/pulley. But at least on the helis we were surprised to find it's oftentimes the other way round. Against this background the wear mode on the Evolve seems to be the same, i.e. caused by forward acceleration. Eventually everybody will run into this problem after a certain mileage. Curious to learn when mine will reach a state where the belt drive doesn't work reliably any more, despite a tight belt tension.

Great videos! Do you experience any issues with the motorization only being on one side? For example if you lean to the right, will the wheel lose friction to the ground? Thanks!
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Florian Fietz Thanks Flo! Re. your question: no, in 95% of all situations that's fine. Problems may only show up on loose ground (where the friction of 1-wheel-drive is generally not enough) and when doing very tight right-truns where you're low on the board, grabbing the deck with your hand and heavily leaning out. Then the drive wheel sometimes "takes off".

@heligraphix how much Sugru do i need to seal the whole bottom of the Carbon? i know they come in packs of 8, is 8 enough or should i order more? Thanks in advance and great video!
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Josh Ex Hi Josh, it's enough to order 1 package with 8 mini packs (5g content each). You don't need much as a seal, except where all the cables come out of the battery tray and at the motor and that flat plastic part housing the receiver. Use your fingernail to achieve nice fugues all around the board; they'll be nearly invisible. Re-use the excess Sugru for further sealing; you got about 15 - 20 min. for re-using. The more practise, the less you'll need. About 5 - 6 mini packs should be enough (but no problem if you use 8).

This remote control looks different to the one I am getting is it the first version ?I asked a lot of people about the disconnect cut off from the controller ,many people wrote back to me Saying that was not an issue with there carbon gt ,maybe again this is because they have the newer led remote controller Please advise
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 7 лет назад
Hi Loopie, there seem to be several versions of the remote control. We opened up some and they oftentimes look a bit different. It seems Evolve has them made in batches and keeps working/improving on them. The GT has a different remote - it's got the large LED display. It works great. Uses a lot more power thant the simpler one, but you still don't need to charge it too often, so that's fine. The Carbon GT does have occasional cut-outs, too. However they're rare and I perceive it less of a problem (if at all) compared to the other boards.

I've been keeping up to date of your review of this board. Thank you so much for the testing of the board. I have a question, how does it do when it rains? Would you ride if it was raining? I have been looking at all the electric boards on the market before I buy.
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Evan Pham Hi Evan, welcome. Evolve clearly states you should not ride the boards in rain or on wet surfaces/through puddles. We've tested it and opened the board and found it gets a bit wet inside. Ever since we've used Sugru (as briefly discussed in this review) to make it more water resistant. This works nicely and we do ride the board also under rainy conditions now (only if we have to, it's not much fun and you look like someone sprayed dirt all over you). In fact we even experimented with mud guards lately. So bottom line is: it's possible but preferable to not do it. Should I do a video on how to make it water resistant?
@ImaYouOwn

+HeliGraphix.com yes please. I'm thinking of buying one of the boards. which do you recommend? bamboo or carbon? street or AT or both?
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
BlueSlime Unless you're one of the guys who're into the Carbon look, the more budget Bamboo will do nicely, plus it's more agile (but less stable at high end speeds). I always recommend the A/T because it is so universal; you'll find yourself going "offroad" soon. Should you be a true skateboard guy having ridden longboards previously, then the street version may be your thing.
@ImaYouOwn
@ImaYouOwn 8 лет назад
+HeliGraphix.com if i buy the AT from the site and maybe buy wheels and others on some othersites will it be less expensive? and also. when will you be making the water resist video?
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
I doubt it's going to be significantly less expensive, but you run the risk of incompatability of some parts and it's simply a hassle. I'd buy the compete board ready to roll and later then - once you need them - consider 3rd party spare parts. We've had a question/discussion on this in an earlier comment. // Water resist: So far not many requests for this one ...

@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 6 лет назад
Wow ok that's pretty unusual. I guess you were riding in hot temperatures? Over here nobody ever went back to street. But the answer to your question a simple one nonetheless: Do you need A/T capabilities, i.e. do you go offroad? If no then test the street wheels (and let us know how it worked out). If yes then stick with the A/T and buy a bunch of tire casings.

Can you please let me know what kind of oil you put on the bearings? thanks
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 7 лет назад
Hi Michael, I'm using a (multi-function) lubricant called Ballistol. It works great (we also use it on high-wear gear of the helicopters) and is hazard-free (in fact they also use it for weapons, leatherwear, cleaning and many other purposes). Important is to clean the outside of the bearings thoroughly before applying any kind of lubricant, otherwise dirt may creep in and the bearings will run worse than before.

@HeliGraphix 7 лет назад
Wheels (outer part) and belt were around 70 EUR (USD prices probably quite similar). An extra set of bearings is from 40 - 70 EUR.

Great video Do you mind if I ask what are and where I can get the lights you have on your trucks. I’ve searched for them but can only find them in white and red. Would like the color shifting version but not sure what they are called to narrow my search. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 6 лет назад
The lights are great and finding them in black silicone is difficult. You'd need to search for "LED silicone bike lights". There are different types available. I'm not sure there is a version with different *light* colors though. If so, please let me know as others might be interested, too. I'll try and post a link to an ebay version of the black lights I'm using on the GT board.

+DREAM ENGINES Welcome! There's also a dealer in Spain, plus a 2nd one who is about to open business in Spain (I've seen insider pictures by chance). I however doubt that postage will be less. I'd recommend to contact Evolve via their Australian main website and ask them. It'll be in their interest to offer a good solution. Please let us know what was their answer.

so if you sum up the prices of all replacement parts how much do you spend per kilometer to keep it going ?
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Christian Wetzel That's indeed a very smart question. Factoring in pretty much everything including electricity cost, it's 12 Euro-cent (13 US-cent) per km and 1.80 Euros (1.95 USD) per ride (in my case per average ride of 15 km). That's more than I expected.
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Christian Wetzel Assuming 5 years lifetime and (for the Carbon AT) a purchase price of roughly 1500 Euros, then the cost go up to a whopping 32 Euro-cent per km or 4.80 Euros per ride, based on my (relatively high) riding frequency.
@christianwetzel2199
@christianwetzel2199 8 лет назад
+HeliGraphix.com That's more than i expected and in the range of a car. But you won't travel that much on a skateboard. Anyway: thanks for doing the math
@shaneshannon434
@shaneshannon434 8 лет назад
+Christian Wentzel i don't recommend pushing the boundaries just because it has tires on it... its not a Hummer, nor did the military make it. long range rides on gravel or grass or rocks or whatever won't increase the life of the board, should be common sense. i keep mine on concrete as much as i can, and only go on other terrains when its called for, which isn't often because I'm inner city. spending the extra money on AT kit means you don't have to pick it up every time theres a taller lip or a patch of grass or something ahead... as you would with almost EVERY other eBoard on the market :) needless to say, you get what you give, and iv got no issues with mine.

I'd like "report" something, whenever it's raining or significant amount of moisture in the air, the crevice at the powerbutton easily collects enough to wet the PCB making it short itself. Sugru seems (which i never heard of before) to make the electronics waterproof, making it best of both worlds. I HAVE to try Sugru, i already had water damage and while it's fixable each time the corrosion does takes its toll on the PCB. While I'm waiting for the belts I've ordered, i'll be cleaning my Carbon so the dirt doesn't get stuck underneath.
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Ohem1 That's interesting, thanks for the heads up. Never heard of the problem before BUT we've found that there are quite a number of different versions of remotes, even though they look pretty much the same from the outside. So yours may be especially prone to moisture. Sugru is a good fix for many things. There's also liquids to make electronics waterproof; just google it, they use it on multicopters, too.
@Ohem1
@Ohem1 8 лет назад
+HeliGraphix.com Oh i wasn't talking about the remote, i meant the powerbutton on the longboard, sorry if i misled you. To be precise, the circular crevice where the powerbutton is seated is what's collecting the moist and so corrodes the PCB. This is what I meant: i.imgur.com/TIVlUQ7.jpg and i.imgur.com/zeLFi4M.jpg
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
Ah, thanks for the clarification. Yes, this is indeed a problem. We used Sugru on the inside to seal off that button. I've seen that on newer boards Evolve uses hotmelt glue on those buttons. But not sure if it's meant for sealing because not done properly. Anyway, Sugru's a good option.
@Ohem1
@Ohem1 8 лет назад
I agree, Sugru seems to be the better option. I was thinking of making Sugru being the cover for the button on the outside as it's waterproof as well as elastic.
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
Didn't think of this before ... but it seems like a real good idea. Yes, could work. Please report back after trying! / Alternatively, you could use Sugru to "glue" a piece of thicker plastic foil over the button (ring of surgru to fix the foil to the board).

Hi, I see some of footage is taken in Egypt, some in Europe. How do fly with the board? Do airlines allow them as registered luggage?
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Łukasz eN Yes correct, I flew with the board to Egypt. Check out my ride video (2nd one coming up, this time front door Egypt). Airlines will transport it as sports goods (just like a snowboard), but then you'll need to pay extra. Same may happen if you avoid the term "sports equipment" (which I did) - because then it's regular baggage, but likely oversized. It then depends on the person at the check-in counter and your persuasive skills. I was lucky and could transport it as regular baggage without paying oversized.
@TheSuperszplin
@TheSuperszplin 8 лет назад
+HeliGraphix.com Great thanks for the lightning answer. What about batteries, are they not considered as possibly dangerous by the airlines? As I heard, only Virgin consciously allows them onboard. Buy I could be wrong. regards

Regulations keep changing at fast pace, so chances are that in a few months things will be different. As of now, when the battery's part of the device, then it's fine.

Hi, I am 38, 195 cm, 90 kg. Never road an electric longboard. What would you recommend evolve carbon AT or evolve bamboo GT? Can get both for the same price.
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 7 лет назад
I own both Carbon A/T and Carbon GT A/T, and in your case I'd go for the Bamboo GT. More power, more fun to ride. Only downside might be the looks; this said, the Bamboo is a great-looking board, too! And prioritizing performance seems like the better strategy. Is that Bamboo GT an All-Terrain version? If not then you'll want to get the conversion kit. I've seen many people convert to A/T, and not a single one convert back. Especially with the extra power of the GT, riding on non-asphalt is just too nice :) Seal it with Sugru and you've got a "water-proof" board that will eat just anything.

Where did you buy sugru? How can I use sugru on bamboo gt?
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 7 лет назад
Just google the product. You'll either buy directly from Sugru or one of the many resellers; it's also on ebay. I'd buy the 8 mini packs in black, it's best value for money. You may store them in the fridge for around 2 years and I've found it useful for many things around the workshop and house. How to use: See 2:30 in this video. On the bamboo, simply use it around the battery tray and where the cable come out, also where they run into the motor, etc. Don't forget to also seal around the heat sink on the underside (and ideally from the inside around the charging plug and on/off switch).

How does it handle the rain? It rains a lot where I live. Thanks.
@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
+Hans Zarkov Question has already been answered below Hans (plus more interesting stuff). But here again, hope it helps: If the board is sealed properly with Sugru, it'll withstand wet roads. We've ridden in the rain more than once and also drive through puddles (not intentionally but it happens). Also through mud/dirt. Never experienced any problems. But again: you need to do the sealing procedure properly. You'll typically need about 6-8 Sugru mini packs (the small 5g packs) for one board. One distribution package contains 8 mini packs; maybe order two to be on the safe side. Cheapest often is ebay, otherwise from Sugru directly.

ok there is at least one vid out there that talks about skateboard bearings, alignment, and the adition of washers to protect the bearing s life... this may also protect the axle.... by the way be carefull of the loads... as if you are jumping on it and the force is biger that the axle can properly handle it will bend the axle wakening the molecular structure of the metal... so it can only get worse from there on... also if you are forcing the metals by going off road... you may want to consider getting some parts custom made with stronger metals like titanium and other metal alloys

Battery's gone down meanwhile (i.e. after some 2+ years), meaning less "push" and less capacity. Since we're riding a lot on external batteries with lots of power and range it luckily doesn't bother us so much.

It'll enable you to do such a Range Extension Mod yourself. We're currently riding 4 such boards, all without notable problems and up to 50 km per ride (more is possible). We've meanwhile several 100 km experience with them. Note that nonetheless the project is still in BETA phase and recommended for experienced guys only. Cheers, Tobi

It's nice to see some known "faces" around :) so thanks for asking. You know, it's a simple truth. Doing all of these videos and things is a lot of work. And there's only so and so much we get back from it. To name one thing, that a good deal of our equipment got stolen last year (you'll know if you followed our channels), with no insurance paying. So for the time being we simply had to refocus our attention to what matters, which is our daytime work. We however use our boards (including extension!) almost every day. It was the best mod we've ever done.

The "falling asleep" thing especially with toes is quite common. Just hop off every now and then and walk for a minute. But I know what you mean. The lost connection with no brake is really bad! Wow. +TheGhostrider999 Richtige Frage Nick!

@HeliGraphix
@HeliGraphix 8 лет назад
Personally I never regretted the purchase; and although everyone's got different expectations the overall feedback I hear is good. My own experience is well-documented in the videos. Re. performance up hills, I'd say it's decent up to rider weights of 90 kg (200 lbs) and at ambient temperature. Keep in mind the experience with the two Pintails, though, as mentioned in this 1500 km review. Re. range, it's as advertised as long as you don't go max. speed, difficult terrain and/or low temperatures. Fair enough, although Evolve should clearly mention this in their advertising. Coming up soon in this channel: how to hack your board and do a Range Extension Mod.
