Greetings from Utah. It is great how you highlight individual homebuilt aircraft builders as well as companies that build or supply aircraft engines and components. Keep up the good work. Thanks also for being so gracious and receiving my wife and I on a visit a few days ago to your home and to see your Zenith project, as we were travelling to Florida on business, and happened to pass near your home. You might know this question (answer). Long ago, there was a motor which was at one of those air shows, maybe Sun & Fun or Oshkosh. It was a 2-cylinder, opposed, 4-cycle motor that was being developed. It was unique in the way they were obsessed with making the motor as simple as possible. The rockers were not directly oiled, instead they ran (was it felt?) something which you'd have to relube every few hours (or perhaps each flight). They had some good ideas, does this ring any bells? Remember any motor like I described? Thanks, I love your channel!

Everyone loves to hate anything old. You'd replace engines that are dea simple and extremely robust and have logged millions of hours safely....in a heartbeat. Why exactly. To add a gearbox and a liquid cooling system. Electronic Ignition sure. Fuel injection sure. Scrap the whole design. No. The reason they cost so much is our dear dear government regulations and the fact that nobody is into general aviation anymore. Best I can tell these guys are direct descendants of snale oil salesman. Many people have bought in and never heard back.

Bryan: You May be too young to have been around when Jan ran a Subaru auto engines conversions and sales business. After overpromising and underdelivering, he took the bankruptcy route. There are many of us who remember this vividly. I am amazed that Honda has not obtained an injunction to keep him from using their name. And then there is Jan’s toss-off remark explaining the use Honda engines as coming from a “little fender bender.” Most auto accidents where the insurance companies “total loss” a vehicle are Front End collisions.

The stronger bottom end will be an asset. I would really like to hear torque specifications and horsepower specifications that given rpm. I've been around engines since the 60s, and torque and consistent torque is what drives an aircraft. Horsepower has or less to do with it than torque numbers. Your stating that you can get by with the port injection rather than the gdi. GDI is not the best for an aircraft. The reversion alone, even if you don't use a PCV with at least an attendant catch can, which I would put on every aircraft especially the ones are turbocharged. GDI can eventually cause the engine to start to fail. It does not offer enough more power and fuel economy to justify the problems that come on down the road. The port injection is more than fuel efficient enough and enough power without the attendant fouling of the intake valves to more than justify having the port injection. The increase torque that comes with this 1.8 will make more difference than the little bit of extra horsepower. A number of videos I've heard people talk about how much better they liked the 130 horsepower compared to the 110 horsepower engine in their aircraft. It isn't the horsepower difference it's making far more comfortable. It is probably the extra 20 or 30 lb of torque that the engine is providing. This is precisely why the most sold brand new twin engine aircraft in the United States today is running diesel Automotive engines with a cast iron engine block no less. Because it puts gobs of torque and it does it consistently. Maybe I'm missing something here but I do however like the idea of the 1.8 being added to your line. I like the concept of these engines I think they are going to be ultimately more reliable. I also believe that the TBO time is probably going to be better even with the higher RPM. This looks like an excellent engine to be used in a twin. And that would be a twin in a couple of different configurations. And with a turbo added to it it could be superb. The next one I want to see is that Ford Barrel engine built up as an aircraft engine for a larger aircraft. I am seeing reliable engines in the 500 horsepower with that inline six naturally aspirated all aluminum engine.

I wish alternative engine builders would talk about torsional vibration and harmonics in the gearbox more. Without knowing where the prop resonance frequency is, and the torsional vibration of system, you are a test pilot. In the certified world, the engine is tested with each prop it's approved for, and even so much as changing the ignition *COULD* cause vibration issues. Testing is the only way to know, and I'm not talking about we have 100 hours on the engine and nobody has died testing, I'm talking about stain gauges and scopes.
@AnonyMous-jf4lc

This is why these are experimental... To that end, overbuilding is the common solution. We will leave trimming all the fat to the certified world that wants to pay for it.
@eggenfellner
@eggenfellner 3 года назад
I understand what you are saying, but yes it is experimental to an extent, BUT we test our engines with a multitude of propellers, types of propellers, amounts of blades. Then we have kept our damper the same, cut different way etc all have different effects. You would be AMAZED how little vibration you find in these engines it is not one of our concerns. We get very caught up in the moment and do a lot of stuff behind the scenes, we are working more towards displaying that to the public, we just assume it would be incredibly boring....When this all first started there was a ton of flight testing, this is many years down the line and over 1000 engines on the market flying all over the world. Every little thing was thought about, and the minute we can make something better (even if it doesn't have to be) we do, because it is experimental, and some people lack the needed real work needed to make it work, but for us it doesn't limit perfection. -Alissa

It was requested at the time of the visit to weigh in especially since there were so many of the 150hp options there. We would love to travel to all of the manufacturers/engine builders at some point with scales and get real life numbers to share with everyone. Might be a project for NEXT year and IF we can convince these companies to actually do it. Thank you for watching and engaging here today!

How do you get brand new engines out of cars with no miles?
@alissaeggenfellner4613
@alissaeggenfellner4613 3 года назад
We have contracts and sourcing, it was a train derailment that bumped up the vehicles, they file an insurance claim and we get engines :) A VIN number along with tracking and background in the vehicle are all matched to the engine. We have video in our RU-vid that explain the how and the reasoning of this.

every time I hear Viking prices I just think about how Rotax is twice that and still not as reliable. I feel like car engines have developed and matured more than purpose built aircraft engines and are just a logical choice. Viking has always been at the top of my list by a lot. Sure, they may not have some 250-300hp monsters, but how many people really need that. the efficiency and reliability of these will always outsell anything else to me.

Is Honda fully on-board? I would think the basic design and product support from Honda would be superior to what was offered by an "other" (no specific name offered) light aircraft engine company, and the reconfiguration by this company would make it a good product to consider for rag and tube backcountry builds. Noted the crank truss plate- to prevent crank journal flex under loads negating the need for a heavier block....?

Honda rates this engine at 141hp in the HRV. Where's the 150hp figure coming from?
@eggenfellner
@eggenfellner 3 года назад
Every time we have tuned an engine, we have always been able to get more power out of it than stated for use in the vehicle, usually 5-10 percent. We tune for power, most cars tune for efficiency.
@RumblestripDotNet
@RumblestripDotNet 3 года назад
Automotive OEM ratings are as the engine sits in the vehicle. Full intake system, full exhaust system, all drive accessories, and an ECU tune to pass emissions for 125-150,000 miles. When Viking rates an engine, it has far fewer systems to drive, no intake restrictions, a freer-flowing exhaust, and an ECU tune that does not have to comply with emissions. If you would like confirmation on that just watch some videos from Richard Holdener, he talks about this frequently in his videos where people ask him why his 5.3 liter LS engines make more power stock than what GM rates them at.
