It's fall planting 2018 and we are planting GRASS! After finally getting the weather to cooperate, we hit the fields ready to plant . . . only to make a shocking discovery!
Here is the New Holland T5 115 pulling a 7ft Landpride Drop Seeder. This fall we decided to try a NEW variety of orchard Grass . . . it's so new, we can't even buy it anywhere in the state of Michigan.
This is our trial run of the new variety Persist orchard Grass!
Join Farm Girl on her many CRAZY adventures on their NEWLY BUILT family farm on 87 acres in Western Michigan. Born and raised a city-girl, she's finding out everyday what's she's made of as she struggles to make sense of the farming life!
With plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor and lots of mischief, you never know what you'll watch next!
While dairy farming runs thick though the veins of both her grandparents and her boyfriend Erik's grandparents, this is their FIRST real experience running a farm!
With the ever-present threat of agricultural and small farming practices dying-off, Farm Girl shows that anyone can keep old traditions alive with a bit of grit and determination (and maybe some crying).

The first time I was seeding oats & alfalfa/red clover/timothy mix, I read the manual wrong and used the backside of the lever instead of the frontside of the lever on the metering grid. So I seeded the grass seed at twice the rate it should have been. Very expensive mistake. But we had a FANTASTIC field of hay for 10 years!!!

Suzanne you said something about the PH Level what did they say you needed ? Plus if you have a cultipacker around somewhere I would do my best to get that seed about a half inch below the ground. Birds will eat your seed if it lays on top of the ground. Was kinda hoping you would plant something else first to put Nitrogen into the ground. Even snow adds Nitrogen. I hope it comes up with it being so late in the year.

Check what position the seed cup is set at. Their is an adjustment on each seat cup for larger or smaller seed. If you have them in the wrong position the seed rates will be off.

The original OG field did not plant out well because it was VERY chunky and we didn't have the equipment ti smooth it :( Some areas went down really well, but others didn't, so I had to overseed last fall and a general overseed this fall just to keep it plush. It's already looking great, but I want some Persist mixed in too :)

@wadehopkins3866
@wadehopkins3866 5 лет назад
Don't worry about it your fuel condition is a little rough so you won't get a perfect stand some of them won't come up so it's better than the other way where you don't get enough on I sowd 48 acres if rye grass and only put on Half of a rate had to turn around and run across it again really profitable we've all been there and the ones that say they haven't are lying
@This1LifeWeLive

At that rate you'll be tending that field in your slippers!! Don't you have a Steering assist (ball, knob) ? I couldn't opperate a tractor, heavy plant without one, IMO. Drought! You should have got OLF to do a rain dance. (He's had quite a lot of success this year). All the best. 🛤️🚜😀😀

Yikes...A few things... grass seed (depending on variety) should be planted at 15-20#/acre.... it will spread via runners usually. 50# will need plenty of fertilizer to get a good pasture/hay stand. although... depending on wintering conditions.... it may all be for naught. Is the seed you are using grown in a harsher winter environment?. From the sounds of it..... you planted orchard grass.... good choice, I hope it survives the winter .a better choice may be a fescue/orchard blend Time will tell what results.

@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive 5 лет назад
So here's the cost breakdown: seed + fertilizer on the HEAVILY seeded field was $250 per acre. Everything else was $150 per acre. Payout per acre will be approx. $581 per acre selling a 60lb bale at $7 and getting roughly 83 bales per year off each acre :)
