In this video I install an interlock kit to my home electrical panel for my generator feed. The interlock requires the main breaker to be turned off prior to being able to close the generator breaker for back feeding the panel. It is a simple but safe solution for back up power during outages.

Thanks for showing the installation of the inside bracket, which another video never even mentioned. Here's my contribution for others who may be doing this to a Homeline box. I relocated my critical 120V loads to the RH 120V leg, because I will be using a 120V generator. The RH leg is NOT the breakers on the RH side, but every other row, specifically positions 3-4, 7-8, 11-12, etc. (Of course the LH leg works just as well. You may have to swap the red and black wires if the wrong side is energized using your combination of generator cord, adapter and inlet box.) Sadly I discovered that my older model Homeline box would not accept tandem breakers, which allow you to cram 2 circuits into one space. Before you make my mistake, try to confirm that your Homeline box is tandem-capable, or that you at least have some tandem-capable positions. Schneider Electric has a RU-vid video entitled "Determining if Homeline Load Centers Accept Tandem Breakers". Don't even think about searching the web for the answer because of the boneheaded answers you will find. And don't use the model number or the packing materials to make this determination - just the video.

Remember kids. Always make sure the power is off and you wear gloves and the proper PPE. If you are unsure of anything hire a professional electrician! This was a very thorough video. I'm a master electrician and this method is a lot easier than having to put a manual transfer switch in. You are also not limited on how many circuits you can have available which is always a plus!

Thanks for your comment. The trickiest part of the job was rerouting the garage and generator breakers to opposite sides. Luckily there was enough cable there to make it work. Thanks for watching.

I noticed you have the generator connected to a 50 amp breaker, not a 30 amp. Reason? My generator is rated at 8500 running watts and has a 30 amp, L14-30R receptacle. I installed a Reliance 10 circuit manual transfer switch a year ago but with limited circuits am considering the interlock kit. BTW well done !

Hi Tom. My generator is operated from my tractors PTO and is rated for 15,000 running watts. The genny itself has a 60-amp breaker/capability. I used all 50-amp rated equipment (wire, breaker, and twist lock generator receptacle and plug) because that’s what was more readily available than 60-amp. In my case, using a 30-amp setup would only utilize a fraction of the power the generator can produce. Thanks for your feedback.

Go for the interlock instead. I have a 10,000 watt generator that operates at 8,000 watts and I still installed a 50 amp breaker. My generator has a 50 amp outlet and a 30 amp outlet. We never know what might happen in the future or how our needs may change so I went with the 50 amp. I may decide to get a bigger generator at some point. The big advantage of the interlock over the transfer switch is that with the interlock you can change which breakers are important to you at any given time. With a transfer switch, once you decide which breakers to power up, those are the only ones you can use unless you rewire everything. We only have electric in our home, no gas at all. If I wanted to run something that draws a lot of power all I have to do is turn certain breakers off and turn on the high amperage item and switch everything back once I'm done with the heavy amperage item. Interlocks are easier to install, cheaper and allow more choice and flexibility in the long run. Best of luck.

@@notsosilentmajority1 Thanks for your comments. I bought the interlock switch a few weeks ago but haven't disconnected the 10 circuit transfer switch from the main and will need to to relocated the 50 amp stove breaker and replace with a 30 amp for the genny. Cheers....

@@utubetjc I got lucky with locating my interlock, there was an a 30 amp breaker marked Well Pump that had no wires to it at all because we have a shared well with a separate main. I was able to move my stove breaker down one and install the new 50 amp breaker. You will love the ability to control what you run on your generator as the need arises. Best of luck.

I didn’t get exactly the use of the metal bracket retaining the generator breaker. Can you explain further? Why other important breakers don’t need such a retainer. I’m about to install such a device with a new Yamaha 30 amp 7200 watt generator. BTW, very well-made video! Thanks!
@LivingOurAmericanDream
@LivingOurAmericanDream 2 года назад
Great question. The metal support bracket is to make sure the breaker does not flex in its position which would allow you to potentially be able to have both the main and generator breakers on at the same time. With the support bracket, no flexing is allowed and therefore allows the mechanism to work properly. Thanks for watching.

If I understood it right, the generator + interlock will only energize/power up the "right side", so only breakers on "right side" will really be able to use/turn on. Is it right ? If so, is there a way where we can have both sides working ?
@LivingOurAmericanDream
@LivingOurAmericanDream 3 года назад
No, that’s not quite right. When the main panel switch is in the open (off) position, that’s when the metal slide “interlock” will move, allowing the generator breaker to be closed (turned on). The purpose of the interlock is so that the generator and the main switch can never be on at the same time. Since my setup uses a double pole 50 amp breaker, when the generator is operating, it will energize both sides (all circuits) of the panel.

So.... the interlock is for a lack of common sense!?!?
@LivingOurAmericanDream
@LivingOurAmericanDream 3 года назад
Basically yes. My original video of my pto generator received lots of negative feedback because of no interlock. The reality is a simple oversight of not disconnecting the main could mean energizing utility lines if the crews do not properly ground them for their work. Additionally, I believe most jurisdictions have a law in the books for generator feeds to panels to have a disconnect from main. Either way, makes sense and is fairly inexpensive insurance. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

Under the stress and confusion that might be occurring during a storm and power outage, and dark, and howling rain or snow, and everything potentially chaotic with wife hollering and kids crying, etc. . . it's probably easier than you suggest to forget one simple step in your haste to get the house back up and running. These things exist for good reason. Ask the widow of a dead lineman.

Why don't you show the process of actually installing the breaker retainer? Showing it already in place seems to have skipped a lot of important steps....
@paulcarbone4054
@paulcarbone4054 9 месяцев назад
so for this setup, you don’t pick and choose which circuits you are going to power, rather, it backfeeds the entire panel, is that correct? what would happen your appliances, say a car charger, ac, range, etc drew more amperage than the generator could supply?
@LivingOurAmericanDream
@LivingOurAmericanDream 9 месяцев назад
Yes, this arrangement backfeeds the entire panel. You have to do a little math to know what you can and can’t run, and just turn off the breakers to the stuff that’s too much to run with your generator. For me, the entire house runs, but let’s say the AC was too much. Just turn off the AC breaker and let everything else run. Other option is to turn them all off and only turn ON what you need. Great question thanks for watching.

@@LivingOurAmericanDreamok, but what would happen if i have my 48 amp tesla charger on full , my 12kw range on full, the ac on full, and i’m only generating 80% of what is required… like, what is the worst case scenario? could i damage my ac compressor in this scenario?

Hi. I have a 200 amp main panel and another 200 amp sub panel next to it. Do I need 2 interlock kits and 2 double breakers or just 1 set in the main panel.
@LivingOurAmericanDream
@LivingOurAmericanDream 3 года назад
Hi. It depends on how your sub panel is fed. If it is stand alone with its own feed from the utility and you plan to energize it with your generator, it will need an interlock also. If it is fed from the main panel then one interlock should do it. In other words, if shitting off the main power in the main panel also de-energizes the sub panel, then one interlock on the main panel will work. If you’re still unsure please consult an electrician for further clarity. Thanks for watching and good luck.
