WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

THANK YOU for doing this video. This video along with you doing the unboxing of my materials from site 1 and site 2 have helped me in packaging and presenting these materials for sale. It has been a challenge to get the flat rate boxes to hold these rocks and survive the USPS. I will be selling on Ebay so this video was particularly helpful. I have decided to only offer Small and medium as I think the weight of the large box wouldn't be worth it. I will get you that box of "Cinnamon" soon and feel free to evaluate me with this same criteria.

You tend to call any grainy rock "quartzite." Note that actual quartzite is metamorphosed sandstone--former dunes and beaches. Also, many of the grainy cherts (especially the agaty ones) heat treat to nice gloss. Given the finer grain the chert, the greater the probability of severe freeze-cracking, I've often picked up grainier material in chalcedony deposits with good color to get larger spalls for heat treating. (And every time lament finding beautiful material freeze-cracked down to dice-sized junk!)

I did a heat treat in my kitchen oven a couple weeks ago. Kinda similar. I did 400 degrees for 4 hours and helped a lot. I regret running the oven when it’s 110 outside but oh well.

I looked up the eBay listing... 897 of these boxes have been sold and 94.5% positive feedback. This seller has made over thirty thousand dollars selling landscaping cobbles dredged up from the Brazos and Colorado rivers. Is anyone interested in getting this type of material? I could go into business this week and undercut this guy by 50% but I would label it low to mid grade practice stone and the odds of better stone would go through the roof because a lot of this box would never make it past my personal inspection. Reply to this comment if any of you are interested, I have a landscaper right across the road from me and already ship on eBay all the time.

The problems with shipping rock is in the packaging and the shipping between Post Offices. All those heavy dense items loosely packed bouncing and jouncing just tears up boxes.

this is why i get a little suspicous when someone is selling texas rock because theres a chance they will just send you bull rock. I can just buy 10-15 at my nearest stone supply for less than $10.

Lol. I’ve bought one of these boxes as well. I knew 99% it wouldn’t be primo due to the price, but it was my first experience with truly bad-yet knappable-rock Some very cool colors though in a few pieces

I'm kind of a beginner at knapping, so I go to a local landscaper and buy rocks, so much per pound. I pick out things that look like they might work, most of the time, they dont spall and they dont flake too good, (get the 3 pound sledge out) I must say these "Primo" rocks remind me of this stuff I get locally. Not so Primo.

I got a 20 lb box from him and id say they got about a 1/7 😅 less than half was knappable stuff and of that half maybe one rock was big enough to make a decent point. Most of them were 3 or 4 inches wide and round lol. Dont think they care at all. Just resale landscape gravel sadly

@KnapperJackCrafty good to know. Might have to wait until it gets colder so it warms up the house. My oven heats up the house so much. What's the shortest period of time that you can do an effective heat treat?

@micahmann6967 The shortest time is dry at 200°F for 6 hours then raise temperature directly to the heat you want, wait until it reaches that heat, then hold for 1 hour. Then turn off the heat and wait 6 hours to take it out. It will still be pretty hot but not enough to cause a serious burn if you touch it. About 14 hours total.

What happens if you heat treat that rock to 1000°? Melt? Or does it get super soft

It usually cracks apart or crumbles at that temperature.

Yeah, I got my order delivered in one box. I thought I was getting two boxes. It's not a bad deal, actually. The cost for gas to go collect my own is about the same.

I recall someone posted in one of the flint knapping groups on Facebook about this eBay seller. Not positive reviews. I guess I’m spoiled with primo Georgetown from Curtis S.
