Flintknapping Trash - 1920's Glass Purex Bottle

In the 1920's and 1930's, due to the Great Depression, a large number of Americans moved to the American Southwest in the hopes of starting a new life. On my property in New Mexico I discovered one small, run down, broken up cabin. This is an old depression era settlement. Since coming into its ownership, I have found square nails, old medicine bottles, rusted tools, shared of ceramics, old metal chunks and one Glass Purex Bleach Bottom. In an effort to turn "trash" into something new I decided to take this approximate 100 year old bottle and turn it into a knife.
Thanks a million for watching, liking and sharing my videos. I appreciate the support you all have given this channel! Your time, interests and feedback are important to me. I really want to say thanks to each and every person who likes, subscribes and shares my videos. Much respect!

one of the coolest things about knapping is being able to practice and use old glass bottles etc. or even in a pinch, theres always some glass around somewhere. but most of all, like i said, practing on glass to save a ton of money on stone is where its at!! thanks for the vid

glass flakes very well but you gotta support it right and hit it with softer tools cause shock waves travel through it WAY quicker than grittier materials. glass usually isn't isn't too much softer than quartz based rocks though it does range a bit. 3-5 on the Mohs harness scale. that said brown glass is definitely one of the easiest ones to break. You'll definitely want to grind a lot with it.

@danielmiller2886 Год назад
Where is the cutoff between older and modern? I mean, when did the manufacturing properties change so that older works better for knapping? I'd like to learn this skill and glass seems easy to come by, but I want to get the right glass
@kelvinsparks4651
@kelvinsparks4651 Год назад
@@danielmiller2886 well that's a good question, I'm sure the quality varies from country to country . Here in the UK after the Victorian era the glass gets thinner, probably due to manufacturing improvements and cost cutting. Modern glass still knapps ok but due to the thickness is a bit more delicate. Ive learned all my knapping abilities from RU-vid to be honest. Chanel's like will lord , danny dust , primitive pathways and shaun woods are excellent examples for learning.

I made myself glass knife using small beer bottle shard. It turned out like something similar to double-edged safety razor, but out of glass, serrated and with only one sharp edge. I tried to cut grass, thin branches, leather, ropes, even food (tbh i was expecting that it will leave sharp flakes in food and I probably dead man) and it did quite well in all tasks, even food. One con of my knife is that it's too short. I probably gonna make something bigger, so i can use it more comfortable, like normal sized knife.

Best to practice on glass before touching obsidian(tends to be a bit harder to source)
@aussieflintknapping
@aussieflintknapping Год назад
As Moisted potato said, glass and obsidian are super easy to learn on as they're consistent in their density all over. If Donny worked the centreline back to one face more and really abraded his platforms to be a lot more stout he could've knocked much deeper thinning flakes off but given the piece of glass he was working with isn't super thick to begin with it wasn't necessary. The side with the writing was harder to clear and flake through as the depressions in the glass cause the flakes to want to stop early
