WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

Abo..shmabo! Im modern for life. Learning your system literally changed my knapping life. All I ever new before was direct and pressure. Game changer when you use inderect.

Amen to that. In college I was taught by a master knapper but he only knew 1 method of indirect, balance an antler on 1 leg and try to hit the thing and the Danish punch method. Patrick changed the whole game for me. Now I'm making tater chips.

Great video series Patrick. I remember the first time I did a heat treat I didn’t realize it would smell as bad as it did. I had the turkey roaster in a cinderblock room off of the basement. I did 200° for 24 hours then straight up to 350°-375°. My wife and daughter though something died in the basement. Fortunately I was heating good quality Georgetown, Pedernales and black Owl Creek. As far your accent…I’m from Southern WV where we sound like our Southeastern KY neighbors. Kinda like the Clampets. To me you definitely have a northern accent. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge, successes and failures with us.

Just wanted to thank you for your videos. After watching lots of your videos and practicing quite some time I think I am getting the hang of this. I was able to make a point out of blue glass and it is fairly thin and looks pretty good, I thank you. 👍

I guess I was just disappointed because nowhere in the description did it say, " If you're not an expert knapper, you should probably heat treat this "primo" knapping material. Now I not only know that, but I know how to heat treat it. I didn't get any rock over 3". Maybe one or two 4"but it's the blue stuff and the nodules are. Crazy odd shapes and don't think I have the skill to biface them down. I will finish heat treating it and see what I can do. Meanwhile I will work on snapping this high grade Georgetown that got delivered today. Thanks again for the videos

You have an 18 quart roaster. The number 18 towards the end of the model number demotes the size.

I have a suspicion that a lot of artifacts with crazing are from the piece being used to hold things in a fire for cooking if it wasn't potlidded from the heat treat.

I grew up down in that area, small town called Ballinger. Loved hunting for arrowheads and chasing armadillos. Never forget the sound of those insects along the river at night.

It's not very difficult to spot superposition in the lab. It's self evident for the most part. Great video as always. A topic of interest might be discernment of pressure flakes vs simple trimming by percussion. That's extremely tough to spot even under magnification. People see small chips on the edge and it's automatically pressure. What do you think about that? Is it really pressure? What unique characteristics say pressure to you?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 10 месяцев назад
Pressure has no distinct characteristics except for unusually long and narrow thinning flake lengths due to a prolonged platform contact technique that is not possible with percussion alone.

@@KnapperJackCrafty very good observation. It's a common debate among my peers and I lean towards your perspective. I also require the presence of the tiny bulb scars being cupped more deeply.

I'm a new viewer and watched you videos on phragmites reed arrow shafts . I'm not sure about which direction to set the knock.and at what diameter shaft at nock and tip.thanks for any help.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 10 месяцев назад
It doesn't matter which way to orient the nock on cane or phragmites reed. As far as the measurements at the ends, reed will be around 7/16" diameter at the fat end and 5/16" at the skinny end. Cane (or bamboo) is stronger than reed, so it will be 3/8" at the fat end and 1/4" at the skinny end. Of course, these are natural materials, so the diameters will vary depending on the strength of the material and the arrow spine you want.
@jonahlevi3178
@jonahlevi3178 10 месяцев назад

You can also flintknap basalts, but why? When two feet away you can pick up obsidian? No native american would ever bother with this unless they had a good reason, a very. very good reason. Yes, this is more durable material, but it's way to difficult to work with. Save your wrists and work more knappable, prettier material. This Texas stone is way to hard and frustrating to work with. It's also ugly and will break your bones trying to knap it. Just my humble opinion.

some basalt is easy to work , i had some from a crafty auction and it was so light and workable it was amazing , compare that to the basalt from scotland , it looks the same , with the same texture and colour but it knapps like a block of gorilla glue and it is much denser than the american stuff. why work the basalt over obsidian ? well if its the easy basalt i had a sample of then it knapps almost as easy as obsidian , holds a better edge for longer than a weak pretty glass and has more durability in bending break situations and for penetration. ever seen an obsidian adze artefact ? nope , seen a basalt one yip .
