WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

I continue to appreciate that you are the epitome of the "spaghetti western knapper." You fearlessly knap the good, the bad, and the ugly, and make beauty out of all. Keep up the good work!

If you know your spaghetti westerns. You'll know he's the Left Hand and Right Hand Of The Devil. As seen in the series They Call Me Trinity and Trinity Is Still My Name. My all time favorite westerns.

We had the Grandbaby all night last night for the first time. Shes never been away from her mother for longer than 2hrs. She sleeps just like her mother did. Head on the wife and foot in my back 🤣 Only woke up once about 3am and was back out in no time. I just wish my father was here to enjoy her. So very thankful my mom is still here though. Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms.

11 mins on; I saw that video of a bison being butchered, very good exercise/experiment, they did use an axe for separating the ribs from the spine, that would be good use of biface. The guy made a very rough hand axe.

Jack, my wife is starting to lighten up on me. A little. Now, she says Man spends 3 weeks making 10 arrowheads, breaks 5 of them in half, sells the other 5 for $20.00 each.

I heard somewhere each tribe had it's own napping techniques. Or families of tribes. Idk
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
It seems so, yes. If you look at Clovis, for example, they are made differently in different areas. (Clovis was probably a technology that spread from tribe to tribe, like a meme. The people were already here.)
@scottgoldsberry2730
@scottgoldsberry2730 Год назад
@@KnapperJackCrafty during Clovis time there was not lots and lots of people so they didn't fight over territory and intermingled. As time went on there became more and more people and they were less tolerant of each other👍

What's up big man, 😎 I'm up late I can't sleep because of the pain in my leg. Had a small accident on my mini bike last week. All is good except for constant dull pain and having too much rest, thus difficult time getting any rest until I exhaust myself. Anyways just saying hey from Colorado 😊 Keep up the good practice. I enjoy listening and watching. Be well Jack.

Jack how did you come across your metal rod you have and what size is it
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 2 месяца назад
I experimented with different rods. This is an old video and I don't remember what I used but a 3/8" diameter steel weldable rod from the hardware store is the most common one I use.

QUESTION: Does the material of the striker have an effect on the amount of force needed to remove flakes? Are you using the same amount of force when you use the black mallet as when you use the aluminum? I hope those make sense.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
Yes, there is a difference in the amount of force when using different materials. The harder the materials, the less energy is lost. This means you don't need to swing as fast when using a harder mallet, for example. But if you do swing fast, much more energy is transfered and applied to the workpiece.
@marycomeau9364
@marycomeau9364 Год назад
@@KnapperJackCrafty so would it be more advantageous to use the more dense mallet for prefinish so you don't need to strike hard for the final thinning?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
@Mary Comeau Yes, it might be better. But there may be an issue with changing the weight of the mallet if you can't adapt quickly. The flake removals might suffer at first. There's a learning curve with every change.
@marycomeau9364
@marycomeau9364 Год назад
@@KnapperJackCrafty when I was in school my fellow students didn't like me much because my grades always skewed the curve higher. On those occasions when a certain amount of people bombed a test it would be graded on a curve.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
@Mary Comeau There were times in some of my college classes where half the class bombed the test. But a few aced it. I joined a study group with some of the "aces" and was completely blown away. The speed at which they could solve complex physics problems was unnatural and freakish. It was then and there that I learned about the 1% of the 1%.
