15y old Steve Winwood - Nobody knows you when you're down and out

Incredible how Steve Winwood sounded at the age of 15....like Ray Charles.
"Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" is a blues standard written by Jimmy Cox in 1923. It's lyric, told from the point of view of a one-time millionaire during the Prohibition era, reflects on the fleeting nature of material wealth and the friendships that come and go with it.
As a vaudeville-style blues, it was popularized by Bessie Smith, the preeminent female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. Since her 1929 recording, it has been interpreted by numerous musicians in a variety of styles like Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, John Lennon, Count Basie, Van Morrison and Otis Redding....to name a few.
When "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" was composed in 1923 by Jimmy Cox, the "Roaring Twenties" were coming into full swing. After the post-World War I recession, a new era of prosperity was experienced in the U.S. and elsewhere. However, in the face of all the optimism, Cox wrote a cautionary tale about the fickle nature of fortune and its attendant relationships:
"Once I lived the life of a millionaire, spendin' my money I didn't care
I carried my friends out for a good time, buying bootleg liquor, champagne and wine
When I begin to fall so low, I didn't have a friend and no place to go
So if I ever get my hand on a dollar again, I'm gonna hold on to it 'til them eagles grin
Nobody knows you, when you down and out
In my pocket not one penny, and my friends I haven't any"
The song is a moderate-tempo blues with ragtime-influences, which follows an eight-bar progression.
Although "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" was published in 1923, the first known recording did not appear until 1927. Piedmont blues musician Bobby Leecan, who recorded with various ensembles, such as the South Street Trio, Dixie Jazzers Washboard Band, and Fats Waller's Six Hot Babies, recorded an early rendition of the song as Blind Bobby Baker, with his vocal and fingerpicking-style guitar. His version, recorded in New York around June 1927, was titled "Nobody Needs You When You're Down and Out" and used some different lyrics with emphasis on the hard times (Perfect 133, Pathé Actuelle 7533).
On January 15, 1929, influential boogie-woogie pianist Pinetop Smith recorded "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" in Chicago (Vocalion 1256). In it the lyrics are spoken rather than sung to Smith's piano accompaniment. The song is one of eleven-known recordings by Smith, who died two months after he recorded it.
Bessie Smith recorded the song on May 15, 1929, in New York. Unlike the earlier versions, Bessie Smith recorded the song with instrumental accompaniment, including a small trumpet section. When Smith's record was released on September 13, 1929 (a Friday), the lyrics turned out to be oddly prophetic. The New York stock market had reached an all-time high less than two weeks earlier, only to go into its biggest decline two weeks later in the Wall Street Crash of 1929, which signaled the beginning of the ten-year Great Depression.
Bessie Smith's "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" became one of her biggest hits, but was released before "race records" were tracked by record industry publications, such as Billboard magazine. Today, it "more than any other, is the song that most people associate with Bessie Smith".

I care. I think it was a worthwhile point of interest, in the sense that many artists, no matter how talented, required years of their early lives to achieve that kind of mastery, vocally & instrumentally. If he was forty at this point? He'd still be great, but it would also be somewhat less amazing, given that he'd have had that much more time to deliver at THIS level. Just sayin'.. Thanks for your time!

TONY BARBER Jonny Lang's Still Rainin. was stunning, watching the video, and listening to the song found it to command my 100% attention. He's another Great musician that started early. so was Micheal Shrieve playing with Santana, and especially in the song "Soul Sacrifice" What a Masterful performance, his drum solo, at age 20. That's another vid that commands my 100% attention. Being a drummer myself and at 63 I still play. But I digress, I absolutely loved Traffic, and Blind Faith. Spencer Davis was a good band but I loved the other two. Here is a link to Steve Winwood's Wikipedia profile page. Lot's of facts concerning the life and times of Steve Winwood.

@Benji Martin I'm from MA and back in the great days of music, in Boston a very popular music venue, "The Boston Tea Party" well, first I will say, I was in a band, "The Cloud" that played there during the times of up and coming local bands, like "The J. Geils Band" played there almost every weekend. The cherry on top was having up and coming or already established musicians come and play there too, and it must have been the Spencer Davis Group and this kid fronting the band, his vocals were stunning and yes his looks were too, ; ) If your on facebook there is a group page, "who remembers the Boston Tea party- 67 - 70" guess like the Fillmore.Well, it might not mean anything to you though some great info and stories 💖🌺👍🏾 He turned 73 beginning of the yr. ☮

I remember Spencer Davis Group coming to the Club Agogo at Newcastle on Tyne at that time. I was just getting into jazz arising out of an interest in R&B and Blues. There was this young musician Steve Winwood singing songs like this and 'Georgia on my Mind' (Hoagy Carmichael) in a Ray Charles style plus fine bluesy/jazzy piano, great R&B guitar and harmonica. I think at the time he was around 17/18. He was just amazing. Great memories of those days and this great artist.. I liked Traffic too - still have the vinyl albums. Steve Winwood is a national treasure.

Great story. I'm reading this new book Utopia Avenue by David Mitchell and it's all set in the small clubs music at that time. You were there!

I remember sneaking into a club in York and seeing him for the first time with Spencer Davis. I remember the "wow, a rocker who's my age" reaction. Retired and Still have the same reaction;

Really has a command of the lyrics. Tremendous song which keeps being redone over the decades and is now working its way into the next century. It has that universal appeal which everyone can relate too.
