A series of clips through downtown (including the I-5 Express lanes) and the surrounding area as night falls, All music and equipment FAQ's are in the closing credits,
Everytime I wanna go back to Seattle I come and watch this video. It almost puts me back there. The sky/weather is perfect he chose the perfect music, etc.
It's amazing how much the designers of the interstate system can easily slip in roadway in such a way that space is used to the best ability possible. Kudos to the people who worked on I-5 in Seattle.
I was living in Oak Harbor and I would go to Seattle all the time. I fell in love... Washington State is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen... Beautiful beautiful video!!!
Seattle sure is one of the crown jewels of your 2016 trip to the Pacific Northwest. Washington state is my favorite state of the Pacific Northwest and I love the nature and even the Cascades in that state.
I know this is old but man this....this is why Jim is the best. He doesn't just show you the city he transports you there. I often find myself coming back and watching this one (among others). The vibe is just perfect, I can put on some headphones and it feels like I'm right there on interstate 5 rolling though downtown
You literally couldn’t have picked a better day or time of day to film this.... I don’t know if you specifically planned to do this on a gloomy evening BUT whatever it played out in your favor man, the hues in the sky & the clouds are simply AMAZING....this is one of my favorite videos from you.....SUPERB JOB 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🏆🏆🏆🏆🥇🥇🥇🥇
That city has grown so much since I was there in '74. It was pretty sleepy and The Space Needle stood above everything then. It is even a lot different then during the grunge era 25 years ago.
Why is it that the cities with the most beautiful freeways, scenery, and skylines are known for earthquakes and fires? Beautiful. i hope to drive there someday! Thanks for sharing Jim.
I really like when you got into downtown you went under a highway in the tunnel type of stretch the lush green bushes that line it as the moody Pacific northwest light bleeds through. Seattle's got such a unique beauty to it
Jim, your videos are addictive. Love the editing, the music, the story lines, and most of all, seeing some of these amazing interstate highways. So much has been written and reported on the disruptive nature of interstate highways. Not suggesting this isn't true (my own hometown included) But watching your videos shows the amazing engineering and work that went into construction. In my city (Syracuse) there has been much hand wringing over what to do about I81 through downtown. Your vids have given me a whole new look at this impressive system of high speed roads, along with introducing me to a new guitarist who's music will be ringing in my ears whenever I'm on a road trip. Keep up the great work!
Hi Keith, thank you for watching and for the kind and thoughtful comment, I'm glad you enjoy the videos. yeah I've heard about I-81 in Syracuse, tearing down these stretches of Interstate through cities big and small is a short-sighted idea IMO while improving them from an efficiency and aesthetic standpoint would be the way to go, then again I'm biased :).
The skyline at night in Seattle up close is one of the most beautiful scenes ever! The skyline in Bellevue is also awesome! I really miss living there! Can't wait til the next video as I'm trying to sit and guess which streets you will conquer next and hopefully while you was there you really got to take in the sights like the Space Needle, go the Westlake Mall, etc.
That's some serious eye candy driving south through downtown, and I didn't even know about those express lanes going north. Nice work putting this together. Very cool!
My 2 favorite videos you did with freeway night skylines are the Miami one and this one. I recently got to go to miami and experience that myself and it was amazing. Sitting here watching this video and the seattle skyline looks amazing at night not to mention the freeways there are super cool. I hope to make a trip there soon. Its wild when I think this is completely across the country from Miami lol Something about driving through a large city at night that gets me
Nice route, I think you hit all of the (currently open) tunnels in the area! I'm a big fan of the engineering for that entire Mercer Street interchange. The left entrances and exits aren't ideal, but the designers really took advantage of the grade separation to squeeze a whole maze of ramps and connections to the express lanes in there.
Thou goest by the speedies highway on U.S. western and I really enjoy to watch each and every single second in motion. Thou needest plus film like this one.
This video was awesome, awesome, awesome!!! That's quite an engineering feat how they built I-5 through downtown. It tops any other downtown stretch of freeway in any city, IMO.
That's funny, your "SB I-5 to EB I-90" part of this was basically my commute into work every night! I go from Lake City Way & I-5 until I-90 Exit 15 in Issaquah. Was watching this and suddenly thought I was going to work.... LOL!
Wow! I think this is your best ever. Loved those express lanes, especially how wide they are. But I loved how you took your time. it's like you left no stone unturned.
Thank you very much for that, yes we spent most of our short time in Seattle on the road filming and enjoyed every minute of it. With someplace that far away you can't take for granted when and if you'll ever get back.
Freeways in Seattle looks fun to drive. So many overpass, elevated roads, bridges, tunnels, different elevations. I live in LA and our freeways are boring.
Excellent looking video and a great ride through Seattle and surrounding areas. Seattle looks like a great place, very clean. The music also helped too. Never really listened to any of the Seattle grunge, but it sounded fine to me. Thanx for posting this.
Very nice ride- very nice- especially with Seattle all lit up- I like that skyline- it has a lot of unique charms. Sorry it took me a few days to see the video but a medical issue had kept me down and out- but this video is well worth the wait! Very awesome ride- cannot wait to see the next one from Seattle!
Man, The soundtracks that you come up with fit these videos so perfectly, and the videos themselves are some of the most unique videos that I've ever seen on RU-vid. very well done, new subscriber here, keep them coming, great stuff. Kudos my friend!
both the 1-5 and i-90 look totally different now!! the 90 now no longer has express lanes because they have been repurposed as LINK (metro) tracks and bus exclusive lanes.!! i-5 has gotten repaired, the i-99 that cuts through seattle got torn down and is now a tunnel that goes under downtown!! so cool!!!
Thank you Jim for sharing this awesome video of the drive throughout the Seattle area and I'm hoping one day I will be heading there although I don't drive !
Yeh the northbound Express Lanes is a very cool piece of road. Back in the day I would drive them just for fun even though they took me the wrong direction.
Oh man, the 12-12-5 tour has GOT to include Seattle! A flyover, leading to a tunnel! ya don't see that every day. No one does dusk-to-dark videos better than you do, Jim! (I'm commenting from one of my other channels as I'm rendering out a video to upload to it).
Sure does look it! btw Lville's east end tunnel/bridge is FINALLY open! Sure you already knew that but, yeah lol I know "TheLittleL" isn't near impressive as other big cities here but still i pleasant drive i believe. Anywho looking forward to seeing "i hope" at least one more of the Kentucky city! :) take care and safe driving man!
The Alaskan Way Viaduct in part 2 is (of the time of this viewing) nearly completely demolished. You'll have to take some trips through the (newish) 99 Tunnel, but do it before November of '19 because that's when they'll start charging you to drive through it.
@@Freewayjim Thought you might find this interesting. www.king5.com/mobile/article/news/local/seattle/seattle-viaduct-demolition-double-decker-section/281-682e766d-47ab-4ead-8ef2-191848a541ad
Columbia Center isn't as high as it looks. Willis (Sears) Tower is 1,450 feet high. Columbia Center is only 930 feet. It looks higher because it's on a hill, several blocks away from the waterfront.
Some video's are not available on cell phone, and only last saturday I discovered I could use the desktop version on my phone as well.. So I've been doing a huge catch-up for several channels. For fwj2016 that means 21-30, and the new ones I didnt watch yet. After this video, I guess I need to take a break. Jim, "Emerald City Nightfall" is something Iconic! These tracks absolutely made the rush for me, and Seattle seems to be a city that never gets boring, indeed.
My ex wife and I honeymooned in Seattle because we didn't want to go to a stereotypical honeymoon place. Man, did we ever pick the right city. As soon as the DC-10 landed (it was mid-90's), we knew we'd made the right choice. We stayed downtown so we wouldn't need to rent a car for the entire time and did a ton of walking around the area. As I noted earlier, we both loved the city. So much, in fact, we decided we wanted to live there after three days and began to look for housing and jobs! Unfortunately, with our limited time in town and her difficulty in finding a job (I had a job that I could find most anywhere) it didn't materialize. We did, however, keep looking when we returned home to Iowa but it just didn't pan out, unfortunately. I still to this day long to go back and I'd love to take my kids to see the city I fell in love with. One sorta funny note: We talked to some locals about neighborhoods, etc and mentioned that we really wanted to move out to SEA. More than one person asked, "are you from California?". Of course, being from Iowa our answer was "no, we're visiting from Iowa" and the response was always "Oh, ok. You're .ore than welcome to come to Seattle." Apparently, Californians were fleeing to Seattle in droves at the time and, being provincial as we all are sometimes, the locals were not happy. Thanks for posting these. Brings back a ton of memories.
Cool story, never heard of anyone honeymooning in Seattle but it is a nice city with lots to do. Definitely take your kids. You can even see how much the city's changed from the 90s. I lived in Washington in the 90s and remember driving past the Kingdome on the freeway. Well needless to say the skyline has changed significantly with all the new buildings. I guess the only constant is change. See Seattle again before it changes too much.
+jmurphy1973 This reminded me of Oregonians getting fed up with Californian transplant. A famous governor of Oregon, Tom McCall I believe, said famously, "Come visit Oregon anytime, but for god's sake, don't move here." Being a Californian native, I find it funny that Oregonians and Seattle residents would prefer people from elsewhere than California even though we're similar; I guess people just want more diversity among newcomers.
It's less the Northern Californians we dislike, more the ones from SoCal. Impatient, driving up property taxes/house prices, razing entire areas and destroying favorite places (some even historical) to make high-rises that no one in their right mind can afford, and pretty damn unsafe driving. Not to mention Californian companies investing and only paying minimum wage. By all means, please visit. However, if you're going to live here, contribute and help out instead of being part of the problem.
Interestingly, it turns out that having some more high-rises around actually helps to lower housing prices in the region: seattletransitblog.com/2017/09/11/but-luxury-housing-is-good/
great rockin' video, gonna put it up there with your Colorado i70 Canyon video. I absolutely got "virtually" lost in this one - and as a layperson it gives me a sense of the complexity the engineers must face with all that terrain, weaving tunnels and bridges around mountains and water. Only so many places to build, and apparently with the ongoing tech boom Seattle recently super ceded Boston as the most expensive place to buy real estate not in California.
Kinda cool because just last month they closed (permanently) the express lanes on the I-90 bridge (Don't worry, the ones on I-5 aren't going anywhere!) so they can turn the former express bridge into a light rail line. Weird to watch this video and see cars on the "middle" bridge now. Haha!
Seattle is magnificent at night. during my time there I only used Alaskan Way once at night. I hope you got to use Hwy 16 on the west shore and took a ferry across from Bremerton. +freewayjim Oh another cool thing is... did you notice that the sun stays out until 10pm during the Summer in Seattle?
Great video! Found this one very interesting - we don't have separate "express lanes" in the UK at all AFAIK, so it was interesting to see them in action. It's an interesting idea - am I right in thinking they are essentially toll lanes on highways that are otherwise free to drive on? I'm assuming they have some kind of transponder system and an occupancy restriction?
Thank you, these express lanes are free (some other cities have them from the 1960's), most built before the 1990's are. Express lanes being built now are essentially toll lanes, we have some under construction where I live in Atlanta. In most cases you have to have a transponder to use them.
Ah - watched this again and I get it now - noticed that they're reversible. It's an ingenious idea and seems very cool, though I imagine it presents its fair share of challenges in construction and maintenance.
