I'm usually good at packing things down but the the dripping diesel broke me. When we were finalizing this video Kalyn laughed when I named that particular section in the youtube chapters "The Truck Wins (Joseph loses)" -J

I know I am late to watch this episode, but I had such a lump in my throat for Joe after all he went through trying to fix the truck...that defeat really tugged at my heart. You two make a great team. I love that you give each other just the right amount of razzing but also know when to dial it down. Glad everything got fixed in the end, and you were able to get a good night's sleep, a break away from the rv, and a good meal together, and be able to enjoy the incredibly overwhelming relief of having a working truck again.

The beauty of youtube is there is no "Late!" 🙂 Thanks so much for this. Kalyn got a little flack from people in this episode and some following because they didn't understand our collective sense of humor. (Not a lot of flack mind you, we've genuinely been blessed with the awesomest people in the comment sections) While it wasn't a lot it was to the point where I was questioning if I was editing in a way that made our relationship look bad. So...this comment was so uplifting to know that you see it. You see that we know each other well enough to know when is the right time where it will break through the frustration and lend perspective, and when it's just time for a hug. Thank you so much. -J

Hey Joe, I grew up working on things as a mechanic. My Mother stated one time after I had screwed up, Learning is expensive son, and your education is going to be costing you the rest of your life. lol She was right now I am 65 and still learning. New project is replacing the reclining love seat in out 30 ft fifth wheel camper.

So glad you were able to connect with it. This was one of the toughest videos because in our first 2 tries I was adamant about not showing hard times. And even in this one I needed a moment to just process (When I told Kalyn I couldn't do video at that moment) but the amount of people who have reached out to say "I get that" or "I felt that" has been truly overwhelming. I just hope we don't get too many more opportunities to "showcase" this down the road. I get a lot more enjoyment out of silly bets and fun adventures. 😂 -J

A condition for someone that doesn't know their limitation is Dementia. I must suffer from it, because I try many things that I shouldn't and should get an expert. But, I also will surprise myself, occasionally on what I can do that I had never tried before. I like that you maintain a positive attitude through all this when many would have thrown in the towel. Having a good partner is worth "her' weight in gold. I've subscribed and have been clicking thumbs up.

Joe, it was tough but you got it running. I would suggest reviewing some videos on RU-vid first to help you understand how the job is done first before you start. No shame in the game of doing it yourself. It may have cost you more time but last money. Now you can share your experience on how to get it done with the next Joe. Thank you so much for the encouragement and feedback. The hilarious thing is I did give myself a youtube education on this 😂😂😂😂. The problem was I was looking at videos for F250s that were one model cycle OLDER and thus...they had the in tank filter that mine did not. I did have to do a LOT of searching though to find a good video on how to unclip the fuel lines though and that one I REALLLLLY should have fount prior. haha. Live and learn...live and learn. -J

I know this video happened a while ago but I have send you two a LOT of love and respect!! It takes one h£[[ of a strong relationship to get through something like that, without totally loosing your cool. Re: the term for a DIYer doing mechanical work that is way over your head… That would be called a “Shade Tree Mechanic. Of course, SOME people can get away with it… SOMETIMES. I actually made a living at it for a while. I even wound up with 3 ASE certifications. Been following you two for a short while and have a LOT of respect for you.

I’m 68 and have been shooting photos since 2010. I went from a Motorola phone with a simple camera to a Nikon D700. The learning curve was very steep and I made a lot of mistakes. I’m still learning and probably will be for the rest of my life… If you think you know it all, you’re only fooling yourself. Education is a lifelong experience.

Hey Joe, as a former mechanic on bowling equipment, one thing I learned over the years (28), it doesn't matter how many times you put something back together. If it doesn't work... then have to do it over again. But sometimes you just gotta take it to an expert. I love the fact that you did all that you could and then took it to someone. Glad you got it fixed. ❤

I was about to cry when I realized I had to drop the tank a 3 (or was it 4th?) time. 😂 I really needed more sleep. But yeah, this taught me (I hope) to be quicker at realizing when a job is too far over my skis to try to do without someone more knowledgable looking over my shoulder. -J

I grew up around this and i may have picked some up. There wasnt a thing my dad didnt know how to do, or LEARNED how to do. My Dad and Brother have passed and RU-vid is the go to place. What i have learned is RU-vid is a great place to learn or get showed how to do something. My husband and i had to put a section of subfloor in by the backdoor. We had to watch this guy on RU-vid, Man did he give us confidence. That guy made it look so easy.

I love youtube university! It's only taken me down the wrong path a couple of times and usually even then it was my own fault. I actually did our solar install after what felt like a 3 credit course worth of RU-vid videos 😂. 5 years in and the off grid system is still workin! But I'm NEVER dropping my fuel tank EVER again. 😂😂😂😂 -J

13:19 the best part is that you're very familiar with your fuel system! Since this is so old, you may have figured it out - there's a great little battery jump starter available! It works great on my big diesel and very compact!

I know two things about the beet harvest from listening and watching folks talk about it. First, I'm too old to do that twelve hours of work on my feet and with a bad back and in cold weather. Second, I'd rather get beat up than do beets. 😮 I also know two things about working on trucks. I don't have the desire or will, that's why I prefer someone else does it who can. Second, I'd lose my patience with the attempt fast and probably break something else, thus the best reason to let a professional do it. 😅 I know two more things about your show. I totally felt Joe's frustration. Second, you lady are his reason to persist. 😊

@@OpenRoading As Clint Eastwood once said in a movie, "A man has to know his limitations". If I can ever achieve road life I'll prefer work as a campground host. I can do that, especially if I'm using a golf cart to haul garbage bags to a dumpster or answer common questions. I'm really loving your channel too.

For 40 years my short days at work were 12 hours. The long days were 20 hours . One year during a maintenance turnaround we worked 29 days in a row and a minimum of 16 hours . Now I’m retired and sure don’t miss it at all.

just found your site today. on the truck repair topic- people that don't try things, never make mistakes. or learn new things. i once replaced the engine starter on one of our cars. it wouldn't work afterward. hmmm. was able to get it to a local mechanic, there was a loose wire inside the starter housing that wasn't making contact. who knew? he probably had had this happen in his many years of experience i don't remember the details. i worked on this in my house garage, we had another car etc. so the level of inconvenience was very minor. just my ego was damaged! Joseph DID NOT lose.

Joe, I felt your pain through the entire video. Been there too many times. I was worrying about the battery the first time you tried to prime and start it (been there too...). You definitely learned a lot through this process, and hopefully experienced God's grace and mercy too.

All this trouble builds Character. A membership to AAA with RV is a BIG plus having. Doc’s Diesel for filters Archoil diesel treatment will be your best friend. They make other good things to. Cleans important components. I have the same truck. Just did transmission flush, U-joint replace, differentials clean outs, makes it reliable. Pulling is hard work for truck.

If you ever have to temove the fuel pump again its amazing how much easier to do by removing the truck bed. There are only six torx bolts to remove, a few for the fuel neck and a few wire plugs in the back. No draining and filling the tank and you can see if it works right away. It only takes two medium strength people to lift it off. Of course its only this easy if you don't have a fifth wheel hitch. Also in a rust prone area the bolts are stuck but my first time on my old ford it was only 30 minutes.

@@OpenRoading At least you don’t have the recalled Ram pickups with Cummins engines! Cummins agreed to pay fines of $2 billion. Hope things are better now. BTW. My opinion, Fords are way harder to work on.

i really feel for you.... my big fear is fuel contamination.. that causes problems with the fuel system... we used to run lots of ford diesels at work.. now strictly gas, a bad high pressure pump is just way too expensive to tolerate.. watching you gave me the hebejebies.

11:34 Never run a vehicle out of gas when it has an internal fuel pump. The fuel is a lubricant so the pump was ran dry.

I hope to get a "newer" truck in a year or two This beast needs an overhaul and I'm not sure I want to sink the money into that as opposed to upgrading. Time will tell but hopefully we don't lose you then! We'll still be the same people! -J

I don't think we've ever left the RV together with the awning out...(Maybe I'm forgetting a time?), but I' watched someone else's awning get blown up over their rig one time and that taught me that lesson real well! Our awning is in need of replacement though...so maybe I should let the weather do it's thing someday. LOL (I kid of course - It could also damage the roof and solar panels) -J

I have to say Kudos to you both. None of this has been easy for either of you. The best harvest sounds like just very grueling work and then to have to work on the truck without any sleep you two are amazing. I would have lost it along time ago. You two have nothing but respect from me. I lived in AK for 20 years and I sincerely hope it will be worth everything you have gone through to get there. We do a LOT of boondocking so I've considered something like this. The primary thing that keeps me from doing anything more than considering it is the fact that our gray tanks build up their own odor very quickly and I don't have any desire to leave open gray water sitting anywhere in the RV or have the hassle of extra containers of gray water floating around simply for this purpose. In this particular situation we had full hookups so there were no water & sewer issues. -J

That was something. As they say you have earned your stripes, both of you are to be congratulated sticking it through that challenge. Stay away from the Red River, it has a strong current. Did you know it flows north not south? I grew up in Fargo North Dakota and as a kid recall many individuals trying to swim and boat in it, losing their lives. Really like your videos.

hahaha! One of the few smart things I've done was asked Ford people what Ford to buy before buying my truck. It was unanimous "AVOID THE 6.0 LIKE THE PLAGUE THAT IT IS!" I'm not sure I'd go with a Ford next time, but this girl has over 200,000 miles and is still taking us where we need to go. -J

I had a 2005 6.0 liter that I drive for 125,000 miles and it ran flawlessly . I did have the main computer go out on me under warranty but other than that it was great. I just did regular maintenance religiously. I did have to replace the front wheel bearings one time .

@@OpenRoadingif your not using a good fuel additive I would start. It will help your fuel pump live A LOT longer . If that fuel pump ( cp4) breaks it’s an insane amount of money to get fixed.

@@robertburns5145 That's a good question. For the beet harvest there are a few weigh station operators, but those positions are VERY hard to get. I'm not even sure if that position would be good with a back injury though because the windows are at standing level so you're still on your feet for most of the day. Many campgrounds have workcamping positions where people work the registration booth where they are sitting for a good chunk, if not all of their shift. I know the campground I worked at in Michigan had several positions like that. -J

A DIWhoops is what I call them. My dad is a whiz with auto mechanics and as much as I try, I don't think I inherited the gene. I'm always one over-torque or the tiniest bit of patience away from disaster and usually find myself there. I hate those crimp clamps! Glad everything worked out in the end!

Shoot when I lived in a RV Resort that line stayed open you crap flush it goes down the in the ground. Close it off grid, if stay 2 days etc in a campground Hook it up let it flow

It may have to do with the size of the tank and the proximity of the toilet pipe to the tank outlet. Our toilet is a good bit of distance from the outlet valve and the bottom of the tank is barely inclined...so the waste can build up. But as long as there's a good bit of liquid in there anytime we dump - no problems! -J

@@OpenRoading then I can't remember if mine tilted but I know was allot of liquid gone down. Hose I used about the same size, used a plumbing piece glued it inside of factory tube worked a cap to close it but a hose was same size as factory mounted tube.

Build a platform in your storage area so you can store stuff on two levels and everything will be more accessible. We have a truck camper and we have to store a lot of stuff in the truck so we took out one back seat and built a platform and it works really well. You can even add retractable ratchet straps to secure everything for moving around. Happy trails.

You just gotta let the beard get past the baby stage. My wife also doesn't like my beard so for me it's an uphill battle as I usually rock a full beard, but the stubbly scruff stage is rough😅 like two months it'll look solid. I also greatly appreciate the struggle you two went through for this I've been in similar types of situations many times and understand thoroughly the weight of defeat. Kudos to you for the effort, you made it further than I would've.

Man this was an unforeseen issue and looks like it was a pain to deal with. You should be VERY glad that this happened now instead of on your planned trip to Alaska. I commented to you guys in a previous video about just such an unforeseen things like the fuel issue you might need to deal with way far away from help, mechanic, auto store or even a campground. It was fortunate that you had planned to be in a fixed location for a few weeks and had access to a camp site, water and HELP. If you are still planning the Alaska trip soon please try to have as many contingency plans in place before embarking on that journey. Working on a diesel truck is not really a DIY option unless it is a minor maintenance issue like oil change, filter, tires. The fuel systems are very complicated with high and low pressures and return lines to the tank and they have a lot of monitoring systems that can get knocked out of wack very easily that can lead to catastrophic engine issues and even failures. I will commend you for your attempts at doing repairs just be careful and check and double check to make sure that stuff is returned to how it was taken apart. Something to consider is a second battery for the truck with isolator and switch to separate charging to each battery. Not sure what year your Ford is but some have second battery tray in engine compartment where second battery can be mounted. Good luck and hope you guys have a safe journey to your next adventure.

Thanks for the advice. Diesels are always so much fun aren't they? 😂 Our EGR/DPF failed in 2021 in West Virginia and we ended up sitting for 2 weeks while it got repaired. I agree whole heartedly with you on contingency plans but I also know that we cannot plan for absolutely everything. There's a higher than zero percent chance that something will go wrong that we aren't prepared for - at which point we'll do what full time RV travel requires, be flexible and embrace the journey. -J

That's what I've been told. I gotta be honest though, for 250,000 miles I've only had 2 major repairs, 1 of which was the EGR which pretty much any diesel post 2011 is gonna have eventually. Not loyal to a company, but not a hater either. -J

Hey again. Was looking at your tool box. I switched from those none organized containers to ammo boxes and mark them with contents. Just a idea. I do this in my semi. I did the beet harvest as a truck driver. Easy money ! Just switched from a class A to a 5th wheel and hopefully in 2024 i can go back to traveling and workcamping. And use my hobbies such as Horse's and Photography to do as a side gig. Probably alot of those people you were with worked at Digikey. Northern Mn is gorgeous in the winter. Hi James, I'm blown away by the super thanks. I still don't know how to react anytime someone hits that button, especially for more than a couple of bucks. Wow, just...wow. Any and all supers we just pump straight into our Alaska fund 2024 fund so THANK YOU again! I like the ammo box idea. I have 3 cheap small tool boxes that I use right now, but I need something better for my sockets and wrenches. It's always tough finding space saving but organized.
