Hello Ken, I too am glad you have joined up. I hope all the videos will help out, that is the idea behind the channel. I was looking for something like this prior to building and couldn’t find something like this. Fortunately there are more and more channels coming online like this and KitFox has also started a build series which will help future builders. Have a good day, Matt

Hello Rowdy Flyer1903, I know that I got a KitFox after watching some RU-vid videos. So I would like to think that with the nascent of the RU-vid flying channels it will get some more momentum going. I wanted to start something that would show how easy or hard it is to build, give real world costs & show my mistakes along the way. Thank you for commenting. Are you a KitFox owner or any other airplane owner/flyer/pilot/enthusiast? Have a super day, Matt

@@KingFox76 This guys is building his dream airplane with the best avionics and engine he could cram in it. If someone wants to get into this kind of flying I would (and did) by a used Zenith, Kitfox etc with a Rotax 912 ULS for about 1/3 of what this will cost. If I was building myself , I would probably go all out also. He is basically building the Trent Palmer plane with better avionics.

I fly a CJ3+ with G3000 avionics and they’re great. However when I take pilots for rides on trips, I’m kinda hard pressed to show what the G3000 does that an iPad running ForeFlight and a Stratus doesn’t do. Building a panel for hard IFR with an autopilot and putting it in a plane like this is way overkill imho. A quote from a wise pilot, Bob Buck, in a book called “Weather Flying” said IFR flying is weather flying. Too simplistic? No, it means that if you able to be in clouds you are subject to embedded storms you can’t see and icing. Neither is Kitfox weather. An autopilot is great for long IFR trips where a small deviation in altitude will get you a violation. Do you really want to fly a Kitfox like that?

I second the Viking engine. I have the Kitfox 7 and I'm going to go with the Viking 130 on mine. I've been in aviation for almost 40 yrs and with the Rotax I can't see trying to make old technology work forever with an opposed engine when the inlines especially a Honda is a lot more reliable at a cheaper price.
@gotchagoing8843
@gotchagoing8843 Год назад
And replacement parts are dirt cheap in comparison, and readily available at your local parts store or dealers. All of the advancements that have come along for not only GA factory built AC, but for the homebuilt experimental AC really haven't shown up much in the dept of engines dept ;}> The exception is the non-traditional power plants that have long proven track records of dependability and reliability, imho. Myself, were I able to, I wouldn't hesitate going with an inline 4 cyl fuel injected 'car' engine, jmho. And then there is the expense to reman a lycoming or any other standard GA aircraft engine as opposed to rebuilding a car engine. GA, imho has become a non-affordable luxury for a lot of folks.By going the experimental route, more people can afford to build their own AC, and power it as well as equip it much more affordably. And being about to do one's own maint and insp's, also adds into the savings. I wish everyone who is building their own AC, the absolute best of luck with all the choices you have in every aspect of your endeavor, God Bless !

Hello Sir, thanks for chiming in. I like the idea of dual magnetos in the event of an electrical system failure. From experience I have never had an electrical failure in any of my vehicles. That is not to say I could not have one from my own improper wiring on the plane. I too think the engine is solid & I like all the R&D that Honda has put into them over the years. So if there is going to be a failure it will more than likely come from me not dotting an “i” or crossing a “t” so-to-speak. Thanks & have a great day. How far out from ordering your engine are you? Will the 130 have or can it have a turbo on it?
@KingFox76
@KingFox76 Год назад
Thanks again gotcha going! I like what you brought up about GA affordability. Kits are supposed to be affordable, yet when you sit back & look at some of the numbers I’m putting up on the screen along with some of the comments related to them you’d think I was buying a certified airframe. I paid 80k for my Maule M4v that only had 400 hours on it, sometimes I wish I wouldn’t have sold it. I’m committed now to the build though & will see it through God willing. In the beginning of 2020 I spoke to Pilot Bank about financing, then my kit was delayed & we all know what else happened. So later in the year when it came time to actually see the kit arrive, I called them back only to find out that they were now “unable” to offer financing because of some rule change by the FAA where they can no longer write “TBD” in the location of engine serial #. So since that day I have not been able to secure any financing & I’ve called a lot of places that say they finance avionics, or other experimental parts like the EAA. They too will not offer any financing. So affordability is like you said pretty much now a non-affordable luxury. So yes, the idea of being able to source parts, the great tech that has gone into these engines makes me think that I am getting off the beaten path & will hope help lead the charge into bringing new technology into the GA sector. For each successful engine we have that isn’t the “standard a/c engine” the better. God Bless you.

After reading the comments, let me throw in a few of my own.. People who believe that you build an airplane to save money, should not build an airplane. The bush plane market has gone crazy (thanks to a lot of great videos..) and demand pricing rules. Add supply chain issues to the formula, and your "buy what you can now" advice is solid. Viking has a long list of supporters, but also a bunch of critics. Research both sides. I do not have personal experience with them, but have read interesting opinions. And finally, a general rule of thumb... 1/3, 1/3, and 1/3.. Kit cost. Avionics cost. Engine cost. Hard to stay under $120k for basic kit.. Your $150 is typical for nice engine and nice avionics.. and you have chosen very nicely on both.. Enjoy your build.

Hello Tree Top Flight, thanks for the vote of confidence. As you mentioned, I think getting into this line of hobby and expecting to save money is not reality. Videos is how I found the KitFox. With what happened in 2020 the supply chain is definitely messed up and one can see how important it is to have some manufacturing here at home and not have to rely on a one sided supplier that is located overseas. I agree with your ⅓ (x3) costs. That is pretty much what I’ve encountered thus far. Happy Easter, so far I’m enjoying myself immensely. I hope the same for you. Are you finished or still building? Matt

The 179k factory build is with a 912is not 915is. That means a factory built with the 915 is over 200k or maybe 210k. You are saving 60k to 70k. Doing it yourself.

Before you get too committed, check out Viking Aircraft Engines. I believe you get a more RELIABLE, and smoother powerplant then any horizontally opposed, very dated engine technology, imho. Also check out the DUC adjustable props should you take a look at what Viking offers...

Hello gotcha going, yet another item on the market I didn’t know existed. I just spent some time over at their website, some impressive numbers when looking at the power plants and I do like their price points on both engines and the propellers. I appreciate you bringing that to my attention, I’m going to give it some more thought, that could significantly reduce my upfront costs. Thanks again, Matt

gotcha going, I’ve been doing a lot of looking over there on Vikings’ webpage. Do you have some experience with one of their motors, if so which one and… looking at your picture I assume you might have a rotor instead of a prop? Thanks, Matt
@gotchagoing8843
@gotchagoing8843 Год назад
@@KingFox76 HAD a rotor...lol. I don't fly anymore. No, I have no personal experience with Viking, but I have been watching their videos for quite a while now and listening to their customers who have switched from other 'normal' powerplants to more modern and reliable tech. On another note, IF I would be able to fly again, for my choices, it would be a powered by a modern fuel injected inline engine. Runs on car gas, parts are readily available and no where near the cost of 'certified' flat 4, or 6 traditional engines.JMHO. Good luck in your search and fly safe.

Hello gotcha going. Well I sure do appreciate you bringing them to my attention. I was about to transfer a lot of money to KitFox tomorrow. Right now all I’ll be doing is ordering my avionics since they are so far backordered. I got a response back yesterday from Alissa over at Viking after asking a lot of questions. I think this is going to be my power plant of choice. I thought I had done a lot of looking at motors but never once had I heard of them. This is going to allow me to keep my money in my pocket a little longer, then when I’m ready for my engine and prop, order them with little lead time. Have a great day. Matt

@@KingFox76 Hi Matt, I'm so glad you went to their website. I don't know them personally, but have been watching their videos for years now. If I were ever able to fly again, I would build from a kit, and power it with a Viking engine/prop from them. I had to stop riding Harleys,(that was the last rodeo for me, so to say) back in '99 because I lose my balance. I can't imagine how I would be back up in the air again. I can afford a nice ultralight, but I would be a danger to others as well as myself, so that part of my life is well over. But I am looking forward to watching your build, and you flying what you build. God Bless,George

The factory built price of $179k includes the 912is engine, not your choice of the 915is. The upgrade cost jump from the 912is to the 915is is huge and not only with the engine, but the prop and FWF kit. I finished my S7 STi a year ago and went with the 912is. I am now thinking of doing that upgrade in a few years-- which may or may not happen. At today's prices, that is like to be about $30k, including trade-in for my engine. It is a capable plane as is, but fully loaded at 1550 lbs and a hot summer day, it could use a good turbo boost. Regarding other engine choices, the Kitfox factory best supports the Rotax 912, 914 and 915 engines in their FWF kits--very complete with good documentation. This is not a minor consideration. Also, the VPX is a good choice, highly recommended.
@KingFox76
@KingFox76 Год назад
Hello Tom, thanks for the response to the video. You are correct about the price difference. That should make me feel better as like you say It is probably closer to the 190k mark which would put me even further ahead. That gap will probably continue to grow as prices continue to increase, nothing seems to be getting any cheaper. I do think the 912 is an excellent motor, in fact I like Rotax line very much, I just don’t see why things need to be so darned expensive and that is why I will be going with an alternative engine. I’m already building an experimental plane so I might as well use an experimental motor. Like you, if I don’t like it after a year or two I can always think about changing it. Are you enjoying flying your STi? I’m looking forward to completing mine. Did you do all your own Avionics? Thanks for writing and have a great day. Matt

Thank you! That video was very useful and answered several questions I’ve had. My kit is still 2 years out, so all of this helps me plan. Quick question if you don’t mind….what are you getting for a total cost of avionics if you exclude the IFR stuff?
@KingFox76
@KingFox76 Год назад
Hello Greg, I think the two items that I’ve selected for the IFR stuff are the TSO’d GPS in this case the Garmin 650 & the other Garmin GNC 255A which is an additional TSO’d Nav/Comm that runs $4,399 so I think overall if you cut those out you’d be looking at the $21,000.00 range give or take a few items.
