Joey, to make life easier on yourself, put plant substrate in mesh bags and hide it under the sand. And you'll need a lot of it as you have Geophagus and a stinging ray your tank. Make "plant islands" here and there along the bottom with mesh bags under the sand. It'll keep the substrate under the sand and there'll be no mixing. Some big swords and some jungle val would look good to in a tank that size.

Big cryptocoryne as well. They have strong roots and will be able to take a beating once anchord in the mesh bags

I did this in my planted 125 gallon geophagus sveni tank. But I only have crypts, swords, lots of anubias and bucephalandra. The cryptocoryne is hanging on but the geophagus are hard on them. There's no way a carpeting plants would survive with them. But the mesh bags worked alright to keep the substrate separated. They just like to show through the sand due to the geophagus moving the sand around

@mbutler106
@mbutler106 3 месяца назад
@@shawn1819 ahh that's a shame. It was definitely slow growing but saw changes quicker than that. Not sure what conditions you have but I had an RGB light, it was in a decent space with plenty of light, planted in aquasoil plus I dosed the tank with a basic fertiliser. If any of those things are missing from your setup it might be worth a tweak. I think the main thing is decent light levels and nutrients.

So I built a 14 ft tank on my own, I could lift one end enough to add pipes under to push it in front of the stand, then used a car jack and a combination of blocks and off cuts of plywood to raise it up, then I pushed it onto the stand.

I could recommend you easy plants as I only have like 1 inch white quartz sand bottom on my tanks and mediocre light and I use no fetilizers or anything and have tried many plants. Ones that grow really well are Limohpila Sessiliflora(stem), Crytocoryne Beckettii Petchii - its quite a big leafed red stem, green and red leaf one, for me it grows quite big and bushy just in pure sand. Echinodorus Belheri(Amazon sword) grows really tall and dense, in like 5 months its almost 15 inches tall and about 40 leafs all growing out from the middle of the tank and Vallisneria I think I have Gigantea but it grows small for me, when I bought it it was like 1 inch wide but it only grows in like 1cm wide now and is thinner but grows really well. Should add I have soft water also, from Glasgow Scotland, really soft water, so really soft water and no nothing but sand these plants grow well.

That type of aquascape/soil/plants seems horrible with the fish you have in mind. The geos will sift and dig. The ray would like to do the same I imagine. Why use soil and carpet plants with these kinds of bottom dwelling fish that like to dig? The fish you have in mind for the tank are epic, but would be so much better off with a nature style setup with thinner wood like manzanita and a sand substrate. You could just do a load of floating and rhyzome plants and that would work great
