These are great tips! I think it’s really important for new homeschoolers especially to realize that it takes time, like years, to really feel like you know what you’re doing. Don’t compare yourself to seasoned homeschoolers and feel like you have to have it all together right away. Be consistent with what you’re doing and you’ll learn yourself and your children and develop a rhythm that works best for your family.

Totally agree with "Work on independence as soon as possible" @4:02. Why? One answer is because when they are interested in a topic they can continue to dive deep on that topic on their own.

In addition to audiobooks, keep an eye out for graphic novels for your more reluctant readers. There’s a trend recently of middle-grade novels being adapted into graphic novels (Wings of Fire, Animorphs, Percy Jackson, etc.), and that can encourage your kids to transition over to the original novels. My middle schooler read through all the Wings of Fire graphic novels and then moved to the originals to finish out the series.

Could you do a video on middle and high school age homeschooling? I currently looking into homeschooling, but none of the videos I have seen focus on middle and high school age kids. Please help!

Probably because those moms are too busy teaching and driving their kids places. Try finding moms irl in local homeschool groups. This will be way more valuable than a video online.

FYI, I am able to do 4 days a week with the Good and Beautiful curriculum and complete the curriculum within the same schedule the public school system has. We take 2 months in the summer and I plan the next school year. We do 4 lessons in math and language arts each week. 1 science lesson family co-op for my younger kids and 2 history lessons. This leaves either Monday for a cleaning day or Friday for an errand day. I homeschool 4 kids, 2 are in highschool and are mostly independent.

We do this too! Fridays are for outside, music lessons and the library or something like that. Sometimes we go on nature walks and sometimes we do art cooking projects. My kids enjoy earning lego building days as well.

Same! I have 4 kids. One reason I love The Good amd the beautiful is because there's only 120 lessons. So much flexibility! We do lessons mon-thurs. In the mornings we do group subjects. I rotate science and histor, or whatever unit we're working on. Throw in 5 mins of a Bible story and a chapter of read aloud if we have time. We usually spend an hour together, then they move on to language arts and math. We break to go play outside (while I do housework) and for lunch. Normally all they have left to do after lunch is one subject (so 30-45 mins of work) Fridays are my town day. I need that day! They do things that don't require me. They can practice their music, play outside, read, whatever. As long as they don't bug me all day 😂 We also don't do lessons on co-op or field trip days. We still manage to finish our curriculum. We still technically count Fridays as a school day, because my state requires 180 days. When we do 4 actual lesson days a week... we follow the "year round homeschooling" schedule of school for 6 weeks, get a week off. Repeat to get 6 "6 week increments in" leaving a nice summer break and 2 or 3 weeks for Christmas. I also just discovered this year, outsourcing their science and history. They do Power Homeschool for science and History. It's tailored to their ages, it doesn't require me, and I know they're getting what they need in those subjects, if our day derails and we don't get to it in group subjects. It gives us more liberty to do fun unit studies and take our time without feeling like we're not covering enough ground. That was meant to be a short comment... sorry 😂

Yes! The Good and the Beautiful was my favorite curriculum that was new when I started to use it. I wish it were out much earlier in my homeschooling years! I shuffled through various ones. I did a mix of unschooling in everything. I like what you said about individual goals. That's great! My older sons loved when I would include audio and documentaries into their day too. I read to my children even in their older teen years still! It is important.

You could make your own butter easily, so the rations were probably used more for meat and rarely for butter! My understanding is it was for either or, not both.

I personally HATE homeschooling worksheets and such that I have to print out. Because instead of just having a workbook, I have to make sure there's paper and ink and all times. And there's already ENOUGH for my ADHD self to try and remember on a daily basis xD

How do you report to the state that your children are learning? I’m seriously considering homeschooling but all these details make me nervous. I have an 8-5 from home and I don’t see how I’d do this throughout the day and what my child will be doing during non school time while I work. My husband works out of the house and comes home just in time for me to finish up work while he takes over. Also, in your state, how do students meet university requirements while homeschooled? I’m in CA and other than signing up for an online school that offers the college prep courses I don’t see how my child will be eligible otherwise. This is such an overwhelming idea, which is why I’m still exploring. 😅 thanks for all the tips and answering my questions.

You need to find out the requirements for the state of California. She doesn't live in California, so her answer will do that no good. I used to live in Delaware where you only have to take attendance and you turn nothing into the state except your attendance data. Now I live in Maryland which is much more regulated. Instead of directly reporting to the state, I report to an homeschool umbrella that reviews a portfolio. As you can see, the standards are very different depending on the state. Just Google homeschooling in California.

How do you know if your children are meeting the grade level benchmarks for reading, writing, and math? I imagine that the curriculum comes with assessments, but how do you know that those assessments align with the grade level benchmarks?
@GaserBeam-hi4ez

You need to ask yourself if and why you want your child to meet public school standards, and which standards.
@MistyWarden
@MistyWarden 3 месяца назад
You can look up the standards on your state board of education website but most states don’t require homeschoolers to follow the public school scope and sequence. Tons of kids in public schools are ahead of or behind grade level and teachers scaffold to meet them where they are (or they get left behind when the class moves on).

"Pre-school" is entirely unnecessary. If you look into early child development, all that a child requires is to be able to play and BE. Curiosity and learning go hand in hand with a young child's natural playful inclinations. Even just being outside in the natural world involves so much learning and play for little ones.
