Hands-up if you've got a 16-inch M1 MacBook Pro! And, if so, what are your favourite and least favourite things about it?
@TechnoLadz
@TechnoLadz Год назад
I've got one, yeah. Came from a Windows laptop beforehand. My favourite thing about it is the responsiveness and speed in general. For a computer, it's very responsive - a lot faster than any windows device I've ever used. My least favourite thing though is macOS' incompatibility with many apps, especially emulators, I can't seem to find a good android emulator for macOS on ARM. Another example of macOS incompatibility is that the school subscription of Microsoft Office was exclusive to Windows, so I had to fork out £90 for a year of office.

I have a similar model to yours, but I left the SSD at 1TB. My absolute favourite thing about it is I never hear the fans or worry about heat. Coming from my 2018 Dell XPS 15 where the slightest task caused the fans to go into overdrive, and the poor thermal management would cause the keyboard and bottom to get very hot, this was a revelation. As a software developer there were a few adjustments moving from Windows / Linux to Mac, but nothing insurmountable. The battery life is very freeing as well, although the machine is heavy not needing to drag the charger around makes it much lighter than my load out for the XPS.

I came from windows , bought the intel 16” MacBook Pro and one year later the M1 Pro basic version and I love it. I need 16” to work with, more comfort for reading and spreadsheets etc, it is a bit heavy but such a nice screen! Thanks for your videos always good to have your opinion👍

Me, M1pro 16 inch. Biggest issue has been crackling from the left speaker. Sent it in and they replaced battery and top case; improved a lot but not entirely. Haven’t sent back yet. Disappointing because of this.

I always wonder if the weight and size are worth it but then i have to admit to myself that it works so well and lasts so long that its definielty worth the trade off. Im used to lugging it around. I could not go back to a smaller screen now.

When I go to a coffee shop with my 16" M1 PRO, I select a 4 seater table...plenty of room. Coffee shops in my country are never really busy so I don't feel bad :). Oh, I make about four international flights a year (I'm an expat), and dozens of regional trips a year. I always take my 16" along with me. Is it it big and heavy ? sort of...but there is always a price to pay for having the best with you at all times. It's like buying a Ferrari, loving it but complaining about the small boot/trunk that you cannot fit your groceries in. Gorgeous screen, mind blowing audio and a marathon battery - I'm happy to indulge in its size for those features

I've had my 16" M1Pro for about 6 months, and it is hands down my favorite computer I've ever owned. I went for the M1 Pro because of its better battery life over the Max. As you say in the review, I just don't think about the battery anymore. The display is downright amazing. The keybaord is fantastic.

@@g1984AF Yeah I'm switching to MacOS from my older Windows laptop. I still use a Windows laptop for work but the MBP would be my personal daily driver. I say go for it! MacOS is awesome once you learn how to use it properly and the whole Apple ecosystem imo is a lot more immersive (due to features like AirDrop, notes, etc.) and I honestly find myself wanting to learn how to use the iPhone, Macbook, etc. all in conjunction with one another. Unlike android or windows which just aren't as connected and immersive. Just my 2 cents.

I’ve owned the 16 M1 Pro since release and it’s hands down the best laptop I’ve owned. I previously owned a 2017 13 inch MPB and there is absolutely no way I would go back to the smaller size now. The biggest commute mine makes is from my desk to the living room (and maybe the kitchen) so portability isn’t an issue. When it does leave the house I don’t notice the extra size or weight at all.
@gavinwhatrup6774

I agree about the [lack of] portability. It's a beast to carry around. And if you have to carry the charger around, that too adds another 1/3 kg. Using it in transit is impractical. In coffee shops and other '3rd places' it's OK, but it does scream 'LOOK AT ME' when this behemoth emerges from your backpack. Everything else about it is fantastic; battery life, screen quality, performance, typing experience and audio (input & output).

My 16" M1 MBP 💻 is a dream! ....It's totally portable, fits in the foot print of a 15" (my last PC 15" laptop was twice as thick and much heavier - yet I took it everywhere), and I can't imagine using anything less than a 16" screen, ever again (I had a 13", because I thought I wanted portability, but regretted the tiny screen). Don't be fooled everyone; a laptop this powerful and this light / compact is impressive! 🤯🥳 Let's face it, 98% of us are not flying all over the place, and even if we were, we wouldn't be opening up our laptop (It's actually annoying to the person sitting next to you ....that's what pads are for). Can't find a table big enough? WTF are you talking about? I've not been in a Starbucks or other coffee shop, opened up the MBP, set my coffee down, and not had LOT's more space on the table! .....Especially because I don't need my charger, with the incredible battery-life of these M1 MBPs! 😉 ....Do you live in tiny-table-land Mark? ....Anyways, Mark is right though; only a fraction of high-end users need the Max Chip - Save the money! ....I edit video in minutes (where it took more like an hour on my old PC laptops), no heat (Yes, it's actually ON my lap! ...LOL 😃), no fan noise, all on full-power, unplugged (for HOURS!) ....Get the 16" verses the 14" - you won't be disappointed ...The battery-life is better on the 16" (Pro chip version), the thermals, and it has better speakers, gorgeous big screen, bigger trackpad ...PLUS, there are great deals right now! ........The M4 or M5 Chips will be out before I need a new laptop - hahaha 😆

I have exactly the same model - 16" MBP M1 Max 32GB. It is quite a chunky unit but use it mainly around the home so not a problem and amazing performance, battery life and screen as you say. On the move and when travelling I use an M1 MacBook Air (mid spec) which is far more portable on the move for visiting clients, coffee shops etc.

My 16 inch m1 max (64gb, 2tb) arrived today. This thing is a dream machine. A work of art. A powerhouse. 16 inch is definitely definitely not too big. I’m really happy with mine. I went for the M1 Max, 64GB RAM, 4TB ROM. It was expensive but it is an absolute workhorse of a laptop! I would personally never go for a laptop display smaller than 16”. I’m a software developer and I do lots of photo and video editing for personal projects. I value screen real estate a lot (storage size too) and sometimes I even carry a slim portable external display when I know I won’t have an external display available. Carrying it doesn’t bother me at all. I always bring the MBP’s charger and a Chord DAC and Focal over-ear headphones everywhere too. That being said, I’m the one who didn’t mind carrying a massive gaming 17” Alienware + giant power brick anyway.

I'm currently typing on my 16" M1 MBP.... and it's amazing at this size. I was back and forth on the 14 inch one and this, but really haven't seen anything that makes me wish I had the smaller one. In fact, my laptop fits in every backpack I own, and if I can't find a table for it, my lap works great. The screen real estate is wonderful for video editing and CAD / 3D printer work. And the battery life is simply incredible. On the other hand, I previously had a 14 inch Lenovo Thinkpad laptop, and saw a 14 inch M1 MPB in person and thought "Yikes, this thing is small!" I don't know if I would be comfortable doing any serious work on the go if I had that smaller computer. HOWEVER - small computer + external monitor = perfect. But if I am taking 1 computer with me and need to do some CAD modeling on the go - I'd prefer the extra portable screen real estate.

Got both - like the MBP16 much more. Of cource it is more heavy than the 14" - but the 14" feels like a brick and it's heavy too! The 14" has one big problem.... As it's quite thick it's hard to type on, as the sharp edge is much closer to my hands as with the 16". So I went with the 16" and got a much better display, better sound, better battery and so on. If the 14/16 series is loosing height and if it's getting lighter, I would probably go with the 14" - let's wait and see. So long I'm happy with my 16"

I just got the base model 14" MacBook Pro. The performance is astonishing for a 14-inch laptop and the battery life is miles ahead of other powerful 14-inch laptops like the Razer 14. Apple's unified memory is so efficient. I haven't run into any issues with the 16GB of memory. The 512GB SSD is unbelievably fast for the capacity. I am very happy with my purchase. I live in Canada and got this during Black Friday. It was $300 off so I got it for C$2199 instead of the C$2499 price on Apple's website. This thing looks chunkier than my previous MacBook Air that it replaced, but it isn't too heavy. The footprint is actually smaller than my Intel MacBook Air 2017, despite having the larger screen. The trackpad is amazing. It is more responsive and takes less effort to click. The display is astronomically better compared to the 144ppi non-retina LCD display of the old MacBook Air.

Apple Silicon is absolutely game changing for laptops. You get truly desktop class performance in a portable form factor tat gets extremely good battery life. I just replaced my 14" MacBook pro with a 16" version having finally grown tired of the smaller display when I am away from my desk. I don't mind the larger form factor while walking about the college campus where I work because the larger display is so nice and the longer battery life is amazing. IMHO, the 14" MacBook is still the more technically impressive computer because it has the same performance, the battery life is almost as good, and it is so much more portable.

I do love my MacBook M1 Pro 16 - got it 6 months ago and I use it at home mostly yes - too big to carry around easily but great to watch movies in bed and get lots of screen estate for my data analysis projects. However I find the keyboard really stiff compared to my old MacBook 15 inches from 2015 - maybe because I keep bashing the keys! But not as “bouncy” as my 2015 Mac. I’m considering buying a MacBook Air for travelling etc, but not sure how to adjust a workflow between 2 MacBooks… maybe the pro 14 inches is the sweet spot… very indecisive as well…

While I don't own a macbook I have and do use a 16" work laptop. I've also had 13" and 14" work laptops. One thing I found is that for video and image editing the 13" screen was a little too small, and the 14" was borderline, especially for any high res media. If you're contemplating replacing the 16" with a 14" I'd strongly recommend trying one out first before buying just in case.

It’s crazy really. I own the 16” M1 Pro MBP, and it’s literally the perfect experience… when I’m at home. As soon as I pack it away and begin to travel I’m like “I may alsooo pick up an M2 Air!”. It isnt that it’s the biggest, the heaviest or the thickest, but it is quite a chore. It’s just on the side of noticeable but I do think that whilst that travelling thing is present whilst you (obviously) travel, the larger screen is present in 100% of the use time. And I think that advantage outweighs the annoyance of extra heft during a commute

I knew I couldn’t utilise the extra power of the max chip but I also knew I would like as big a screen as possible and that the monitor I wanted to buy if ever released most likely would cost more. In July, I bought a 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max, 32 GB RAM and a 2TB SSD. I had considered the M1 and M2 MacBook Airs and the Mac Studio, very different computers. I don't really need a workhorse, but expect to mess around with video editing and a lot of photo editing. An Air might have been sufficient, but I always tend to plump for more than I need; better to have more and not need it in the end than to have less and run out. I intended that whatever I bought was to last about ten years, a couple of years less than the 27-inch 2010 iMac it was to replace, and I had the idea, right or wrong, that a Mac Studio or MacBook Pro would have more longevity than an Air. (And I do realise the battery is a factor in the life of a laptop.) I also felt that, despite the greater price of the Mac Studio and MacBook Pro, they offered better value in terms of internal storage. Also, the Air seems to be the kind of computer to consider when deciding whether to get a laptop or a tablet. I don't need a portable computer, because I never need to take it out of the house, but I decided it would be handy to have something that could be used anywhere in the house that I felt like using it. I knew I would want an external monitor, which I would have to get anyway if I got the Mac Studio, so I settled for the MacBook Pro, a Mac Studio but with some portability. I favour a large screen, and that's the reason I chose the 16-inch over the 14-inch. I saw them side-by-side in an iStore and the 14-inch seemed small (it's only less than an inch bigger than the Air, which is tiny). Deciding I still hadn't spent nearly enough money, I then bought the Studio Display because all the alternatives seem to have much poorer sound, and I don't want external speakers. I got the one with the VESA-mount option for maximum adjustability, rather than fork out hundreds more for a stand that offers less adjustability. You're right: I'm not disappointed with the 16-inch MacBook Pro. However, I've used the laptop more in clamshell mode with the Studio Display than on its own without the Studio Display, so, had I the time over again, I might go for the 14-inch... or not... maybe. If I had to lug it about with me when I go out, I'd pick the 14-inch. I don't, though, so it's the 16-inch for me, and that's solely because I like having the maximum screen real-estate.

I have a 16" M1 Max 32GPU 64GB RAM, 1 TB SSD for 9 months now and I am more than satisfied with it. At first I aimed a 14" M1 Pro 32GB RAM version and most likely it would have been as good for me as this one, but it was nearly impossible to find any M1 Mac other than base specs at that time and I've got a very good second-hand offer: nearly unused, under warranty, for a lower price than a 14" M1 Pro base model, so I went for it obviously. Yes, it is considered heavy if portability is a top priority for you (although it is llighter than the 2012 non-retina macbook pro it has replaced), but I enjoy the bigger screen and the extra GPU power so I won't change it for the next 5-6 years.

AS a photographer and Digitech, the 16" M1 Max is a required part of the kit. I have the 32GB version with only 1TB of storage, which in retrospect, was a mistake (i'll go at least 2 TB next time around). It's probably one of the best laptops Apple has ever made with a couple of caveats: the keyboard is so-so and it's WAY too heavy. Additionally, I wish we'd go back to matte screens. The current glossy ones, catch dirt way too quickly and I am not in love with their overall look, TBH.

In a mobile setting, for me it was about screen real estate over weight. At home I plug it into my display and it doesn’t matter. But out and about, the 16 just gives me more comfort for utilizing it. I also am not thinking the M2 is worth waiting for. The next gen maybe. But the M1, especially the Max, is just that good. I have both a MBP14 personally and a MBP16 professionally. I prefer the size of the MBP14. That notch does not ever disappear to me. If you could set the menu bar to be just black, maybe but you cant. Also since macOS out of the box does not let you control menu bar items, it is very easy to lose menu bar items behind the notch. If you use an external display as your main display with separate display spaces, the top part of the screen cant be used at all. You put a window up there and it will slide back down. Apple still has a lot of work to do for the notch to be able to “vanish”. Beyond that notch the MBP16 has been an amazing device. I have the base model and as a software developer it has handled anything I have tossed at it.

Loving my 16" M1 Pro MBP especially for battery life and how quiet it runs after the Intel 'aircraft carrier'. However, 2 concerns for me... i) wish I'd specced up the RAM from 16 to 32 as I do get notifications when multiple browser tabs are open that RAM is running out and ii) I think 14" would suffice because I plug into a 4k Benq monitor via CalDigit TS4 so with the world opening up again, I'd rather have the portability. That said, seems 14" owners simply do not enjoy decent battery life comparable to the 16" model. Thanks for the videos Mark.

The 16” M1 Mac Book Pro isn’t heavy or cumbersome to carry, it never has been for me, and the 17” Mac Book Pro wasn’t, either. Other than the need for Screen Real Estate to work on, I get the Best Macs that I can afford, and keep them for a long time, unless I decide to sell for want and not need, and I future-proof my Mac until I don’t want it anymore.
