I bought the base model M3 Pro MacBook Pro as I just want to video edit 4k videos without struggle, is that so much to ask? This thing IS awesome but you know what? My 3 year old Windows laptop just surprised me.
If you want to edit videos in 4k while doing a little gaming on the side check this video out as I start to push the M3 Pro MacBook Pro to see if it's really worth the high price tag.
Want to see how the M3 Max does? Check out that video here: • M3 Pro vs M3 Max MacBo...

I had to know if the Max was as good as it seems so I bought it and will return one of them! I dropped my m3 pro vs m3 max video here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eaNBAqprWKE.html Also, not sure why at 0:48 the layer doesn't have the color grade on it... How frustrating! I definitely had it on as you can see it later in the Windows version. Ah well.

If you need to be plugged in for max performance, why even use a laptop? Just get a desktop for the best performance. The whole point of the Macs is performance unplugged for a truly mobile workstation.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. I don't get it either. I mean, with my older Windows PC... before I got the Mac I would still take it with me all over the house which is cool. I just had to always bring the power brick and sit near an outlet which is not!

I've really been enjoying your videos. I found your channel doing research on the new M3 pros. Its time for me to upgrade my 2014 Macbook Pro with 8 gigs of ram and 128gb SSD. Its been a solid machine for the last 8 years but drastically slowed down after the last software update, making it difficult to edit even basic videos in iMovie after previously having no issues. At any rate the new Macs and amount of choices with incremental pricing between choices makes it difficult to pick, as the next better one is always just a few hundred dollars more. Apple also made it more difficult by changing up the amount of performance cores and e-cores as well as memory bandwidth vs the last models of the m1 and m2 pro. I too am canadian living in BC following along on your roller coaster ride. Your videos are much more helpful and relatable then the big tech channels testing the fully speced out Max models that are unrealistic for most people. I enjoyed the video editing samples with effects that you tried pushing the machines with. (nice dance moves btw LOL) My editing has all been basic 1080p mostly because of my old macbooks limitations. That being said just like you, I want to be able to do anything I throw at it in the future, and up my video editing. Especially for that amount of money. I was rooting that you would keep the m3 pro because that was the model I was hoping to get. I saw the difference the Max makes in your videos so then I started looking at those but dang the price. Especially here in Canada. So I decided to try out the Apple refurbished and saw that I could get the 16" M2 max with 12 core cpu / 38 core gpu / 32gig memory /1Tb SSd for $3800 cdn. or $4200 after tax, still alot of money but about the same as the 16" m3 pro chip with 36gig upgrade. Although a substantial savings over the m3 max and probably more computer then I would ever need, its still tough to dish out that much for a technically not new product. You mentioned in your video that you like to usually buy used items. Maybe look at the apple certified refurbished then. Apparently only the best items are sold as apple certified refurbished. Even items that are returned and appear unopened are then unboxed and sold refurbished to make sure the item being returned is the item in the box. So we will see what happens after it arrives.. Thanks for the videos, and best of luck in your decision.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Glad you found the channel and I love chatting about this stuff! Yes I found those refurbished deals on Apple and have been tempted by them myself. The ONLY thing the Max doesn't shred is the VFX in Resolve so I'm wondering if the ram is limiting that or what. 48gb should be enough... right? Right?!?! lol. I wish I knew the answer. I am also considering a M1 Max w/32gb of ram for 3 g's used... so, you know, HALF of what I spend on the M3 Max. Though after watching a lot of videos I am tempted to keep the M3 max. It really is awesome. I have done a lot more testing and will release those videos soon. We'll have to chat about your new pc once it shows up. That's really exciting! What an upgrade it's going to be for you by the sounds of it. Don't be a stranger!

@@thesahdstudioWell my new refurbished M2 Max arrived. Overall it was a pleasant unboxing. Just like a new unit. No scratches or signs of any wear. Battery had only 7 cycles. Love the 16” size. Ironically I did find a spot where it struggled. I was turning a regular 1080p video into a vertical short, and was messing with some of the inspector tools. I had auto captions and was using the setting for stabilizing as well as resolution. Using the super scale 2x is fine but on 2x enhanced the playback crawls to only 8 FPS. The activity monitor showed only using 20gb of memory. So 12 to spare. May be it’s my inexperience with resolve. But I was a bit shocked and disappointed. Woke up this morning to that same nausea feeling you had. 😂
@thesahdstudio

@LawnCareBusinessSuccess lol! What codec are you shooting / editing in? You may be like me in that initially you don't understand what the choke point is so when these insane computers struggle it makes them feel weak... For example I've realized that graphics cards will absolutely shred when it comes to things like magic masks or adding effects. But they don't necessarily do that well during the editing process and that's the most important part for me. This M3 Max isn't that great with effects like I imagine a huge video card would be but overall it's fantastic. I have another video I'll get out in the next day or so hopefully so stay tuned for that. Maybe it'll help you feel better

However, I do miss gaming even though I'm not a huge gamer.

I've tried maxed out M2 max last year coming from a PC. And surprisingly it was performing worse than my 1400$ pc. I was working with like 30 min 4k footage ( with proxies ) and lots of motion graphics. It took ages to load the motion graphics compared to 4x cheaper pc. I gave up on it. Although I still have that urge to come back to mac... They are very appealing, and it's addicting. I would probably still pick mac over any other laptop if my workstation had to be mobile. Otherwise PC is always the best choice.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 6 месяцев назад
I think what I've learned going through all of this is that a Windows machine with a decent graphics card WILL still win when it comes to effects / transitions and adding things like magic masks etc... however, for the rest of the time, doing the actual edits etc, the Max is just blowing my ol' pc out of the water... and the fact that it's way faster than my old 11th gen i7 with a 3080 for that normal editing. I have another deep dive video coming out soon so you'll see a bit more of what I'm talking about. The m3 max doesn't magic mask super quick but it's good enough, and it handles everything else like a boss. So depending on how you edit depends on what you should buy. I do wish it was a little better with the vfx, not gonna lie.

Have you adjusted the power settings on your windows laptop for "unplugged/on battery" if you haven't it'll automatically throttle things to try to conserve a mix of battery life and performance. You have to change it to performance or something of the sort and it won't be that huge of a jump in things until the battery get to the last 30% or so.

Oh yeah, I've tried to make the Windows one run at the highest power setting... I even took the laptop apart and removed the fan covers to make it run cooler. It seems to run well when it's cool but heats up so quick the performance tanks. I sure would love to test out some of the newer Windows laptops vs the Mac in tests like this. And the Windows one performs well enough with proxies... I made videos for years with that thing!

From what I understand it will deliver similar performance on battery ads it would plugged in... And if it is better plugged in it's not a lot. I learned a lot about what kind of computing power you need for video editing during this in the following videos. The M3 Pro is totally fine for most video editing as long as you're not using graphic intensive effects. My takeaway from going through all of this is that you need to figure out what video codec you want to shoot before you get the computer because you can't just brute force it with the latest computer.

@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 2 месяца назад
Unfortunately I offer you an answer about using Premiere, but I can honestly say that yes it edits 4k 10bit files without proxies smooth like BUTTER. I found the Max chips are better at video editing than the Pro chips due to the extra video encoders which is why I ultimately ended up getting the M1 Max MacBook Pro. The Apple Silicon chips are incredible for smooth video editing even on battery. However, the graphics are still the weakest link. I am able to do 3d things in Fusion (maybe it's similar to after effect) but it's not incredibly smooth. There are ways to use dynamic cache and to render the effects on the spot that make it smooth though. I think the newer Silicon chips will be a MASSIVE upgrade and you will be very happy with using them.

Something that is missing from these performance comparisons is always the fact that working on a PC with windows absolutely sucks in comparison. The user experience on a Mac, and the whole Apple ecosystem with other Apple products, and collaborating with other users who are also on Macs is 10x better. Even if it’s technically less powerful for the money.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 2 месяца назад
Well I think that's a bit of a matter of opinion. Windows offers good value and to be honest, there are a lot of things I miss about using Windows (file management is one quick example). But yes, the compatibility with other Apple products seems to be a huge part of what makes the ecosystem so great. Though I have yet to experience the benefits of that since nobody else in my life or none of my other products are Apple. The Windows laptop was much worse of an experience though overall, and I think that becomes clearer if you keep watching the other videos I make.

I believe the Max versions have a higher performance mode. Not sure the Pro does. What you "get" with the M chips is a trade off between really good performance on battery. Verses really high(er) performance on power brick and with loud fans on a PC. And they can't compete on battery with the M chips. They are designed to work best only on high power. I used to have an intel MacBook Pro i7 (2019) model. It worked and works fine. Except the heat and the fans OMG.... While at roughly the same price point (maybe a few hundred more for inflation). The M2 Max I have now is FAR and AWAY better. At this point I think it will be how you adjust to MacOS and the applications on it. Hopefully, it is going well! 😁

Well the M3 Max will crush the 2080 laptop for sure... But a 2023 i9 with 4080 for around $2500USD will perfom as the $5000 mac, even better if you use a lot of plugins and Noise reduction. Open FX and many other plugins take advantage of Cuda cores and heavy threading so the intel CPU with 24cores will be a bit better than the M3 Max. I still think Macs are better all round laptops if you need portability keep the M3 Pro, even if you dont get the best performance in the world, it´s still good enough for the work you do and it has a great screen, speakers and battery life. If you require better performance get a desktop PC with a 4080 or 7900xtx with liquid cooling they are quiet too and very powerful or the Mac Studio it is much cheaper than the laptops and you get much better thermal headroom.

It sounds like you could benefit from the Max chip? - it's substantially faster and I think ironically represents better value. The e-cores are about 10% of the performance/size of a p-core, they don't count, the entire 6 e-cores on the Pro take up less space on the SOC than a single real p-core, there's also no technical advantage to have 6 of them, the Max chip only has 4. On the max chip you get double the p-cores and more than double the GPU cores, it's a dramatic improvement over the pro chip, more than double the speed in just about anything and matching something like a 4080 in terms of GPU, and CPU is something like a 24 core AMD threadripper - but also having neural engines, hardware decode/encoders, 2 media engines (cuts export in half), etc. The pro chip this year I feel is a bit of a con, it's Apple lying to your face, look at this 11 or 12 core machine - no, it's a 5 or 6 core machine, you built it to increase your margins Apple! - If last year, the M2 Pro was an M2 Max with less GPU cores, this year, it's a crippled chip with cut corners to reduce the die size and manufacturing cost. If you are within the return window, I would stretch to a Max, or just get last year's Max or even Pro.

Also be mindful that the 14” throttles performance when not plugged in, unless you go into manual settings and change it, the 16” by default is always at peak performance even when unplugged

As an M3 Pro and Windows Workstation owner, I believe that the slowdown of the Windows system on battery power isn't a fair reflection of its capabilities. In fact, both tests were somewhat flawed. Firstly, Windows will typically limit the performance of both the GPU and CPU when running on battery to extend battery life. However, there is a workaround for this. In Windows, you simply go into Settings > Power & Sleep Settings > Power Plans, and from there, you can instruct the laptop to operate at full power. This should yield results similar to when it's plugged in, assuming the Nvidia driver for your laptop isn't also limiting performance, as Nvidia often does this too. On the other hand, the MacBook might also have some performance limitations, even if Apple claims otherwise. For a fair comparison, it's best to plug in both devices. Additionally, the comparison is somewhat unfair because the two laptops are built completely differently. The Windows laptop does not use ARM architecture, which is designed for systems such as phones, iPads, and now Apple's M series chips. The technology is incredible, and I have no doubts about its future, but I was initially confused by the surprise expressed over the performance advantage of the Windows laptop, as it is built using two completely separate chips. These are physical chips located in different parts of the laptop, each dedicated to their own tasks and with their own memory (the CPU accesses RAM, while the GPU accesses Video RAM). The MacBook M3 Pro, on the other hand, has a single chip with unified memory. While the efficiency advantages are unprecedented, the performance advantages are, in a sense, expected. I've noticed a lack of understanding within the Apple community about how and why these machines differ, but these are the technological realities. Different demographics indeed. I built my Windows PC workstation complete with colour grading screens and such, and now I love my M3 Pro, but it's important to be mindful of these technological differences. Nonetheless, the video results are fair based on the factors described. Again, the efficiency of the M series is remarkable. I still lean towards the MacBook in this situation, especially if I'm in a cafe!

Oh yeah it's not a fair or technically even test at all. I'm just an amateur learning as I go. I understand the difference of the soc chip and the x86 howrver there weren't options to choose from... So I think comparing them is fair. The Windows laptop is in full-blown power mode... And I believe the m3s are either in automatic mode or high power mode I can't quite remember... The videos are out there just to give normal users an idea right? There's a lot of other videos out there explaining benchmark scores in power management etc but I was just doing my best to showcase real world test so I could buy the right machine for me. I think the arm stuff is the way to go for most people and apple is just crushing it! I think Windows stuff is great... they're like the monster truck of computers. Loud noisy and they suck back the power but they can get the job done brute force!

Just bought a M18 Alienware with a 4070 and Ryzen 9 7845hx, got rid of my m3 pro when my $1200 4060 laptop rendered my timeline nearly 8 times faster…. Pretty shocked.

Yeah a decent video card can REALLY help out with certain parts of the video editing process. I still found for me that faster more efficient CPU's ultimately made a bigger difference while editing than the GPU with how I edit, but I haven't compared newer Windows machines to the Mac's so I can't say for sure. I will say the M3 Max laptop was fantastic when working with the footage, but I WAS underwhelmed adding video effects in Resolve. And yeah, the M3 Pro isn't really built for video editing. It can do it but... that's wild the one you used got spanked so hard! How does the battery do? Can you video edit on the go at all or does the video card just eat the battery?
@SharrodVisuals
@SharrodVisuals 3 месяца назад
@@thesahdstudio Yeah the video card definitely eats up the battery, definitely a work station rather then being on the go. I had the m3 pro 11/14core aswell. I use a lot of optical flow, speed ramping and 3d tracking. I didn’t realise how much the m3 would struggle under gpu intensive loads. The cpu was blazing fast though I’m yet to test out my Alienware as waiting for delivery.

@@thesahdstudio honestly it looks and sounds like a mixture of the power settings on you windows laptop not being configured for performance when unplugged. The other issue you're running into is likely ram, you 2080 has it's own ram instead of "unified memory". Most windows laptops aren't made to be powerful for video editing with their onboard opus, they're mostly in case your discrete graphics goes bad. Apple specifically built its cup/gpu to work together. It's going to be apples vs orange when it comes to onboard graphics with apple vs intel or amd. Side note; I own the same M3 Pro MBP model you're using and also and Asus Rog Zephyrus 14 with a 4060. I'm not a fanboy on either side.

Do you mean the functionality with things like color grading in Resolve? For me for example, I just want my RU-vid videos to be entertaining. I'm not sure if FCP has better or cheaper plugins/addons etc... Resolve has some decent stuff baked in but I think I need to start adding some openfx stuff. I'm going to see what I can get for Resolve, hopefully it's decent!@@sergiosanchez2012
@sergiosanchez2012
@sergiosanchez2012 6 месяцев назад
@@thesahdstudio I mean FCP is much limited for more complex projects, for personal, small things you´ll be fine, but even then the media management is horrible, it duplicate files ingested. If you need things done outside of resolve like sound design or work with composers for music, you cant output OMF or AAF. Or doing color grading in other app requires the use of unreliable plugins for conforming meaning apple wont give you support if something doesnt work. Resolve is much more robust, scalable to bigger productions, amazing media and color management and you have a fully fledged free version that you can incorporate if the project gets big and you need multiple editors working on the same thing. For me it´s a better investment to become proficient in resolve.

Thank you for this video! Much appreciated 👌 as for the comparison itself don’t people buy laptops so they can work while not being tied up to a power supply socket? 😁 so the windows without power supply has basically 0 fps while Mac has 10 right? 🤔

Noisy fans and running warm? Not sure where you are getting that. They don't do that at all! I think they are pretty ground-breaking as someone who switched from a Windows laptop and never used the M1/M2... the battery on these and the power they offer while on battery is insane!! I think pretty much any model will absolutely rip for most people. Sure you need a beefier one if you're doing hardcore stuff, but as I've realized, it's not worth spending the big bucks on the Max when you can work smarter with your software. But I hear you. It's all anyones talking about. I was so curious and couldn't find what I was looking for so I had to make my own content.

I've been converting everything to proxies and it works great so finding it hard to pull the trigger on anything better. I'm eyeing up the M2 studio but I'm thinking, if I wait long enough there will be a laptop with that power at the current m2 studio price point, then I can just have one machine that I can use at home and out and about, which would be perfect.

@@andytrace Any of the Max MacBooks are pretty insane for video editing I gotta say. I'm on the M1 Max and can work on all my codecs without proxies. The M3 was even better but was only really noticeable with the better battery power. The speed was faster when they were side by side but honestly, when just using the M1 Max it's just so good I don't really care about programs opening a couple seconds faster kind of thing. Yeah if your workflow is fine then why bother spending the extra cash when you don't need to?
