[16] Painting Holiday Ornaments with Alcohol Ink

Painting holiday ornaments (aka Christmas baubles) with alcohol ink is a lot of fun and fairly simple to do.
In this video I show you how I cut a hole in a Solo cup so I can insert the white glass Christmas ornament and use the cup as a spinner. That way I don't get alcohol inks all over my hands (even though I wear gloves, you'll see it still gets messy). Using the cup to paint with alcohol inks makes it easy to manipulate the ornament as I paint and spread the isopropyl alcohol.

Thanks Jerilyn. It will be a fun activity to do with friends. Be sure to work in a very well ventilated area (if not, you'll need to wear respirator masks) and wear gloves or you'll get messy.

Does it need to be white on the inside ? Is that paint? Or?

@@sareng2005 this ornament was white (I didn't paint it on the inside, but if you have a clear ornament you can pour white alcohol ink or white acrylic paint on the inside). It doesn't have to be white at all - I have painted many clear ornaments as well.

Thanks Sherry. I actually buy white glass ornaments. But I have also painted on clear ones. Sometimes, with clear ones, I will paint the inside white first. And yes, I have also done this with plastic ornaments.

Beautiful ornament. Nice to see one done on the outside of a white ornament. Do you need to varnish and if so, how many coats, to keep from damaging ornament? Thanks

Thanks Elaine. When the ink is dry I spray with Kamar Varnish. When that's dry, I dip it in Liquitex high gloss varnish. Some of the ornaments I paint are on glass (so the only damage that's happened it when I've dropped one by accident) and others I paint are plastic. The white ornaments are glass ones.

@@scarfitupnc I'm guessing that you're asking about how I dip the ornament in the Liquitex varnish. I fill a small plastic storage container (like Tupperware) with the liquid varnish. Once the ink on the ornament is dry, I dip the ornament into the liquid and spin it around to make sure it gets fully covered. Then, I hang it up to dry. It will drip so I put a paper towel belong where it's hanging to catch the drips.

Cathy, I use Liquitex High Gloss Varnish (recommended to me by a fellow artist). I pour the varnish in a container and dip the ornament in there and swirl it around. Then, hang it up to dry (need paper towels under it as the varnish drips). Other times, I might spray it with Kamar Varnish (a couple of coats).

This is so gorgeous! I’ve never used alcohol ink before. So a question- you said you’re wearing a respiratory? Can I ask why? Is this bad on lungs?

Thank you. The fumes from isopropyl alcohol and alcohol inks contain what is known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It is recommended that you paint in a well ventilated area (open windows and/or doors) and/or wear a respirator mask to protect yourself from the fumes.
