I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that A) A 16th seeded team beat a #1 seed, B) The 1 Seed was not just a 1 Seed, but THE TOP seed in the entire tournament and C) The 1 seed was beaten, by TWENTY POINTS, by the 16 Seed! I must be having an out-of-body experience.

Umbc is a commuter school that is looked down upon from towson and UMD.I can't believe we won , we're not known to be a sports school but rather a stem and research university. We're on spring break but I can't wait to return to my classes and show my pride.

I wonder what will happen first.. A 16-seed winning the whole tournament.. Or somebody filling out a perfect bracket..

The main difference was that UMBC shot 50% from three compared to virginia's 20%! The long shot killed the signature packline defense, forcing the cavs to gaurd the three point line and allowing for UMBC to drive into the paint with ease. Virginia's suffocating defensive strategy was ironically their greatest downfall.

Before becoming the first #1 seed to lose to a #16, Virginia was the first team to be unranked in the preseason and become the overall #1 seed. Duke was the preseason pick to win the ACC and finished second. Also, West Virginia did score 73 when they held off Virginia in nonconference play.

Haha. The 1st video I saw when I got on RU-vid was a school, that I live 10 minutes away from, pulls off a huge upset against Virginia. I didn’t even know they were in the tournament.

And no one remembers nor cares that UVA won it all the following season; they will forever be the first 1 seed to fall to a 16 seed and it was in bloodbath fashion.

No it's not. Those were college kids playing against Soviet pros (equivalent to NH L superstars). And that was for the Olympic gold medal. However, this is certainly the biggest upset in college basketball history.

Yo I'm a UMBC student (proud DAWG) we don't even have a football team, the only thing we are known for is chess and occasionally soccer..our b-ball team has always been ass til last year...our school is small as shit full of introverted brainiacs..until last night the majority of Maryland would tell you that UMBC stood for (U Must Be Chinese ) because of the school's multi-cultural background ....like yo this shit is literally unbelievable...I feel very fortunate that I was able to witness this greatness and to be able to proudly say IM A DAWG!!!

I don't even know what UMBC stands for much less heard of them before today. Credit to them for the upset

I loved every second of it. I had no particular interest in the outcome. I’ve just always rooted for a 16 to beat a 1... unless it’s my team happens to be the 1 seed lol. But anyways, I knew it was gonna happen eventually, especially now days with all the mid-major schools getting better and better every year. With all of this one and done stuff that has taken over college basketball, yes all of the big schools are still getting the best players, but a lot of, if not most of, those big time players are leaving for the nba after one year of college.m meaning the next year said big name college is starting over again with all new freshman and very few to no upper classmen. While on the other hand, these mid major schools are not getting the top 100 high school players... BUT they do still get some good basketball players and most importantly the players they get are staying for four years. So it’s like a choice. You can have 5 highly touted and highly talented freshman but they have 0 experience in college basketball, or you can have 5 seniors who were maybe not touted very high coming outta high school but have developed over the four years and become good players and most importantly have gained 4 years of experience playing division 1 college basketball. That’s why I have felt like it was just a matter of time before a 1 fell to a 16. The chances were much more now than they were 20 years ago before all the one and done stuff started and most kids were staying at least 2 or 3 years even at the big power 5 schools.

UVA did not respect these guys. UMBC is hitting all their shots, they look and realize the game is getting away from them. By that point they clammed up and panicked. On the other side UMBC was having FUN. That dude Lyles was amazing though! And he was getting injured. Moral of the story: Throw away the stats, throw away the records...Always respect your opponent
